Cigarettes may contain pig's blood
(Big Pond News. March 30, 2010.)

Cigarettes may contain traces of pig's blood, an Australian academic says with a warning that religious groups could find its undisclosed presence 'very offensive'.

University of Sydney Professor Simon Chapman points to recent Dutch research which identified 185 different industrial uses of a pig - including the use of its haemoglobin in cigarette filters.

The Dutch research found pig haemoglobin - a blood protein - was being used to make cigarette filters more effective at trapping harmful chemicals before they could enter a smoker's lungs.

Religious texts at the core of both of these faiths specifically ban the consumption of pork.

'I think that there would be some particularly devout groups who would find the idea that there were pig products in cigarettes to be very offensive,' Prof Chapman told AAP on Tuesday.

'The Jewish community certainly takes these matters extremely seriously and the Islamic community certainly do as well, as would many vegetarians.

'It just puts into hard relief the problem that the tobacco industry is not required to declare the ingredients of cigarettes ... they say that's our business and a trade secret.'

put (the problem) into hard relief

(put) into bold relief
(bring) in full relief
(throw) into starkest relief

Perth man facing Bali jail over marijuana bust

A Perth man could be jailed for 15 years after allegedly importing less than two grams of marijuana into Bali.

Robert McJannett, 48, was arrested at Denpasar airport in December after Customs officers allegedly found the substance in his luggage.

He has appeared in the local district court charged with two offences, including importing drugs.
(ABC News. March 30, 2010.)

Bingeing on junk food is as addictive as smoking or taking drugs and could cause compulsive eating and obesity, a study has found.

American researchers found burgers, chips and sausages programmed a human brain into craving even more sugar, salt and fat laden food.

Scientists at the Scripps Research Institute in Florida found laboratory rats became addicted on a bad diet just like people who became dependent on cocaine and heroin.

While the findings cannot be directly transferred to human obesity, it found that overconsumption of high-calorie food triggered addiction-like responses in the brain.
(Andrew Hough. Junk food 'as addictive as heroin and smoking'. The Daily Telegraph. March 29, 2010.)

In the study, the research team divided the animals into three groups.

One got normal amounts of healthy food to eat, another was given restricted amounts of junk food and the third had unlimited amounts of cheesecake, fatty meat products, cheap sponge cakes and chocolate snacks.

There were no adverse effects on the first two groups. But the rats which ate as much junk food as they wanted quickly became very fat and started bingeing.
(ibid.)

(5) ― cute

WORD HISTORY: Cute is a good example of how a shortened form of a word can take on a life of its own, developing a sense that dissociates it from the longer word from which it was derived. Cute was originally a shortened form of acute in the sense "keenly perceptive or discerning, shrewd." In this sense cute is first recorded in a dictionary published in 1731. Probably cute came to be used as a term of approbation for things demonstrating acuteness, and so it went on to develop its own sense of 'attractive, fetching," first recorded with reference to "gals" in 1838.

(4) ― check

"shah"

The current Greek issues checkmate the European community because they expose the additional unexpected problems that are being faced by the common markets when undergoing a world crisis. "In crisis time, it is impossible to demand Central Bank's independence from the Executive branch", Nielsen stated. The former Finance Secretary added that the Argentine government and the Central Bank worked side by side to face the dramatic situation back in 2001.

(3) ― peach

"What puzzles me," he finished, "is that Mr. Vorpe, who according to you has amazing powers of recollection, could remember nothing at all about the person who pawned the jewelry box." "He probably thought it was pinched, sir, and he didn't want to peach on the thief. We're his livelihood, ain't we, sir? He'd have nothing to fence, if he was to get a name for splitting on his pals."
(Kate Boss. Cut to the Quick. New York: Viking. 1993.)

disport

The American film actor and producer was active 1914-47 in both silents and talkies. He was the highest paid movie star of the 1920s, appearing in more than 500 films and made at least 200 himself.

The final landscaping included a dozen formal gardens, an equal number of fountains, and an 800-foot-long canoe pond fed by a 120-foot waterfall pouring down the hillside. The owner of this ebullience, his family and guests could disport themselves in a 250,000 gallon Olympic-size swimming pool 85-feet by 40-feet; a tunnel ran around it with underwater windows for photography.

(1) ― raiment

One after another, the models came out in what could probably best be called raiment (gold-leaf cock feathers covered one tunic) and moved with exaggerated steps that called to mind dressage, although these high-strung ponies looked hypnotized.
(The New York Times. March 12, 2010.)

To express disapproval of; deplore

"The first and fully accepted meaning of deprecate is 'to express disapproval of.' But the word has steadily encroached on the meaning of depreciate."

She denied his " emotional disturbance " theory, and " she deprecated sharply 'the Freudian school' of criticism, " Greene notes.
(Christopher Andreae. From the Pen of Beatrix Potter. Christian Science Monitor. 1990.)

Okanoggan Falls's Fourth of July always climaxed with the parade, a homegrown affair for which people prepared at least three hours in advance. There was always a chainsaw drill team, a convertible for the Butter Princess, a Dixieland jazz band on a flatbed truck, and decorated backhoes and front-end loaders in lieu of floats. Deprecating self-mockery was a finely honed sport in Wisconsin. Tom was going to be obliged to ride in a Model T with a stovepipe hat on, so Susan phoned the Wattesoon commander and asked him to accompany her.
(Carolyn Ives Gilman. Okanoggan Falls. Fantasy & Science Fiction. 2006.)

Deprecate is a strange word; the only context I have seen for this term is when a new computer system removes previous features. Also note that the verb deprecate should not be confused with its cousin depreciate, which is what seems to be happening to my house price!

This week I have selected some of the items in Vista that you won't find in Windows 7. What I find is that deprecating features confuses us old-timers because we keep looking for them! Deprecating utilities or applets also irritates those who can remember Microsoft boasting that you could do everything on a new Windows operating system that you could do on its ancestors.

(2) ― kaput

kaput

Apple will replace your iPad only if the battery has lost its charge through normal use. So if you make your battery kaput by spilling hot coffee on your iPad or accidentally dropping the device out the window, you're out of luck.

And beware that the replacement iPad won't have any of your personal data on it. You'll need to make sure you have a fresh backup of your contacts, calendars, e-mail account, and other information.
(Lance Whitney. When your iPad battery dies, dig out $99-plus. CNET News. March 16, 2010.)

― conk out

Once your iPad's battery conks out, Apple will give you a new device, but it'll cost you.
As with the iPhone, the rechargeable lithium-polymer battery in the soon-to-be-released Apple iPad is not user-replaceable, meaning you have to send the gadgets to Apple for servicing. And under the iPad Battery Replacement Service you'll get a new iPad to go with that new battery.
But the service won't come cheap. It'll cost you $99 plus $6.95 shipping for a grand total of $105.95 per unit. You may also have to pay local taxes on the deal.
(Lance Whitney. When your iPad battery dies, dig out $99-plus. CNET News. March 16, 2010.)

terrine de canard(鴨のテリーヌ)

vendre des canards a moitie

to half-sell ducks
(Merriam-Webster English Dictionary)

The U.S. Soccer Federation was founded in 1913. And soccer was here long before that. Indeed, soccer is one of the best things the immigrants brought to this country. Soccer is as American as apple pie. The canard that soccer is un-American is wielded by those involved in so-called traditional American sports, who feel threatened by the growth of soccer. In terms of the number of participants, soccer has blown past baseball and football, and only a shortage of fields prevent soccer from overtaking basketball.

More than 120 million U.S. census forms begin arriving Monday in mailboxes around the country, in the government's once-a-decade population count that will be used to divvy up congressional seats and more than $400 billion in federal aid. Fast-growing states in the South and the West could stand to lose the most because of lower-than-average mail participation rates in 2000 and higher shares of Hispanics and young adults, who are among the least likely to mail in their forms.
(The Associated Press. March 15, 2010.)

Autistic children put in cage

A SCHOOL that pens children with autism in a fenced area may be breaching human rights.

Parents with children at Seven Hills West Public School are angry that pupils with special needs are placed inside a fenced enclosure that has one tree, a bench and a dirt floor.

But the NSW Department of Education has defended the enclosure, saying it is used for new students with disabilities if they require more intense supervision while they adjust to school.

The school has 52 students with special needs.
(News.com.au. March 11, 2010.)

Autistic children placed in 'pen' during school playtime

The New South Wales (NSW) education department confirmed that students with special needs at Seven Hills West Public School were put into a fenced off area while other students spent their breaks in a larger playground.

The pen was reported to have just one tree, one bench and no grass.
The NSW opposition Liberal Party said separating autistic children was inhumane and "outrageous".
(The Daily Telegraph. March 11, 2010.)

Woods' orchestrated image as a clean-living, all-America family man was blown apart last November when a bizarre accident with his SUV outside his home escalated into revelations of sexual liaisons with a string of mistresses of dubious reputation.

Woods became a pariah. Endorsement deals worth an estimated $1 billion are splintered. Gillette, Pepsi-Co Gatorade, Accenture and AT&T dropped him. He became the punch line to a hundred late-night TV talk show jokes.

While his wife has halted divorce proceedings and returned home, Woods' fans appear less forgiving.

A survey of 1,800 consumers by Q Scores revealed Woods’ negative ratings have leaped 160% since last summer making him the most negatively viewed athlete since Kobe Bryant faced rape accusations.

a mercenary soldier

"The people in Villa Coronado have to travel 20 miles" if they have to go to University Medical Center, Bexar County's public hospital, said Garcia, the Wesley Center director. But some critics infer mercenary motives even in such clinics. Guerra, the health district director, suggested the doctors in the new Methodist Healthcare Ministries-funded clinics will refer patients to the Methodist-Columbia/HCA venture when they give birth or require other hospitalizations for which the hospitals receive Medicaid reimbursement.

List areas of business process that forces you work ineffectively and inefficiently...

What makes you think so?

force [somebody] into doing
force [somebody] to do

Tell the customer rep you need time to think it over or to discuss the options with your spouse. Here are more ways to trim your cable bill: Consider a bundle. By using TV, phone, and Internet service from one provider, you'll get a discounted rate and be in a good position to renegotiate when the promotional rate expires. However, bundles limit your ability to change one service if you don't like it. Strip down. A little-known law prevents cable companies from forcing you into buying a package beyond the most basic. Find out how much the company charges for the lowest, bare-bones digital service, generally about $15 to $20 a month, then add the supplemental HD package or a premium channel. That might be cheaper than an extended package that contains programs you may never watch.

autorickshaw

MUMBAI: Today will be just another day at work for Anita Kudtarkar. But the 50-year-old auto driver from Vasai is aware that she has stormed a male bastion—she is probably the first and only woman autorickshaw driver in the entire Mumbai metropolitan region.

“After I took up driving autos eight years ago, the municipal council trained around 50 women to drive autos. But till today none has got onto the driver’s seat," says Anita, a resident of Dosti Paradise in Manikpur, Vasai (west).

The need to tide over financial hurdles combined with her love for driving steered the SSC-educated Anita to approach local driving schools for lessons in 2002. “I was turned down by many; finally, a local driver took up the challenge," she says with a smile.
(The Times of India. March 8, 2010.)

While The Baby Einstein Company does not explicitly make educational claims, it notes on its web page that the Baby Wordsworth DVD is a "playful introduction to words and sign language."

The new study, published in the Archives of Pediatrics & Adolescent Medicine, put the DVD to the test in a group of one- and two-year-olds.

For six weeks, 88 children were randomly assigned to either watch it a few times a week or not at all. Researchers then tested the language skills in each group based on how many words the kids knew according to their parents and how well they did in a lab test.

At the end of the period, toddlers who had watched the DVD fared no better than those who hadn't.

Children in both groups understood about 20 of the 30 words highlighted in the DVD, on average, and spoke 10. Their general language development showed no difference, either.

The researcher also asked parents about their kids' television viewing before entering the study. The earlier a child started watching Baby Einstein DVDs, it turned out, the smaller his or her vocabulary was.

The finding is in line with earlier research, said Rebekah Richert, a psychologist at the University of California, Riverside, who led the study. But it is unclear if the DVDs themselves are responsible. Parents who place their kids in front of the screen could be trying to remedy slow language development, or they could be using the DVDs as baby sitters, cutting back on social stimulation.

"A lot of children, particularly when they're young, seem to have these kinds of (DVDs)," Richert told Reuters Health. "My take-home message would be to encourage live interaction between parent and child."

Although it is not well understood how watching television affects language, Richert and colleagues write in their report, the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that children younger than 2 stay away from the screen.

maiden name

Kokumin Shinto, a rather reactionary, more right-wing party, has other beefs. While supporting the government on Futenma, they oppose two proposals of the Hatoyama Administration. One is granting voting rights to permanent residents and naturalized citizens of Japan.

They also oppose a proposal to allow married couples to keep their own family names. In current Japanese law, married couples must choose one family name, legally speaking, which normally means the husband`s name. More and more working women use their maiden names at work while being forced to sign official documents with their "legal" one. Or many couples choose to "marry" but not register it officially. The DPJ`s proposal is widely supported among Japanese voters but Kokumin Shinto has called it a frontal attack on the institution of marriage and threatened to leave the coalition over passage of either plan. The Social Democrats, by the way, strongly support both proposals.

The Hatoyama Administration response to Kokumin Shinto has been to say that "negotiations are underway" and nothing has been "finalized". And probably never will be.
(Geoff Dean. Japan's Fractious Ruling Coalition. The Student Operated Press. March 3, 2010.)

Unveiled at a Friday policy meeting, the bill would enable married couples to choose whether to have the same family name or keep their birth name.

"All marriages are happy," Canadian playwright Raymond Hull once said. "It's the living together afterward that causes all the trouble."

In recent decades, more people have tried to avoid wedded trouble by living together before tying the knot. People say they want to see if things work out before committing to a ring.

But a new government study suggests that cohabitation can actually hurt the chances of having a long marriage.
(ABC News. March 2, 2010.)

1. To live together as spouses.
2. To live together in a sexual relationship when not legally married.

Kim Yuna, Kim Yu-Na, Kim Yun-A, Kim Yeon-A???

I had a nice email from a Korean reader who suggested that the phonetic -- or transliterated -- spelling being used in English for his country's great figure skating star, Kim Yu-Na, was incorrect.

He said it should be Kim Yun-A or Kim Yeon-A, because it is as much a pronunciation issue as a spelling issue, and there should not be a break after the ``u'' sound.

I replied to the emailer that the English-language media has taken the Yu-Na spelling from the way her name is listed by the International Skating Union.

同記事中では、韓国文化を尊重して("First of all, I have chosen to write it with the family name (Kim) first because that is the Korean manner: family name, then given name.")、姓-名の順で金メダリストの名前を記事中に示すことにしたとあるのですが、銀メダル獲得の浅田真央選手については、名-姓であり・・・、日本文化は??

With the crowd roaring for a stunning performance by Japan's Mao Asada, that included a rock solid triple axel-double toe loop combination, South Korea's Kim Yuna went one better.

The two had just skated the two greatest short programs in Olympic history.
(Philip Hersh. Brilliant Kim tops a stunning Asada in short. Chicago Tribune. February 23, 2010.)

― frenetic

frantic

I have received many emails about Tribune newspapers' decision to spell the name of Olympic women's figure skating champion Kim Yuna (no hyphen) instead of Kim Yu-na (hyphen), as is common usage when one transliterates South Korean names into English.

With the frenetic work schedule at the Olympics, I have not had time to respond to all of them.

So I will do it here by linking you to my response to this question when a reader first posed it after Kim won the 2009 world title last March.
(Philip Hersh. Spelling test: why we spelled skate champ's name "Kim Yuna." Chicago Tribune. February 10, 2010.)

In frenetic morning trading, sterling at one stage dropped by more than four cents against the dollar to a nine-month low of below $1.48, but rallied slightly to end the day 2.5 cents down.
(The Guardian. March 2, 2010.)

American Heritage Dictionary

"See synonyms at predicament"

"The biggest part of our program isn't what sort of diet you should be on or what sort of exercise program you should be on. It's parenting." But, for now, no one can claim to have a good and reproducible method for preventing obesity in children or for curing it. Treatment programs are expensive and, especially since there is no evidence that they work, they are seldom paid for by health insurance. That leaves parents and pediatricians in a quandary over whether to treat a fat child or leave the child alone. Some obesity experts would agree, saying they are so concerned about the future lives and health of fat children that they advocate treatment even when the treatment's success has not been documented.
