WASHINGTON — Apple set up a global security team three years ago to combat rampant counterfeiting of the iPod and iPhone in China, according to a US diplomatic cable released by WikiLeaks.

The California-based gadget-maker hired away employees from the drug company Pfizer who led a crackdown on pirate Viagra to head its anti-counterfeiting efforts, the September 2008 cable from the US embassy in Beijing said.
(China piracy spurred Apple to action: WikiLeaks. AFP. August 31, 2011.)

counterfeit(ing)

"Early evidence suggests nearly 100 percent of Apple products in unauthorized mainland markets are knock-offs, while factories in Guangdong province are exporting enough counterfeits to single-handedly supply the world with fake Apple products," it said.

Fake products include "what appear to be real iPods with 80 gigabytes of storage, but that in fact have only a very inexpensive 1GB hard drive inside," it said.

China is home to the biggest counterfeit market in the world, despite repeated government pledges to root out fake goods.
(ibid.)

Peruggia, who had worked at the Louvre, was put up to the job by an Argentine con man named Eduardo de Valfierno, who had a skilled art forger knock off six copies. Valfterno then sold the copies for the equivalent today of $67 million.
(Joseph A. Harris. Here's Looking at You, Kid. The American Spectator. 2010.)

Four years ago, Pfizer Inc. was on the verge of abandoning a cancer therapy that had shown little promise. Then scientists discovered it did work, but only in people with a particular genetic anomaly—as few as 6,000 patients a year in the U.S.

In recent years, Pfizer probably wouldn't have considered such a small market worth further investment, company employees say. Yet today, that experimental therapy is Xalkori, newly approved for a rare form of lung cancer, for which Pfizer plans to charge $115,200 a year per patient.

Meet the new blockbuster: drugs like Xalkori that treat intractable diseases afflicting small numbers of patients shown by testing to likely benefit from the drug. Such targeted therapies can be brought to market faster and at less cost, and health plans will pay high prices even for long courses of treatment.

TOKYO—As the clock ticks on Japanese Prime Minister Naoto Kan's administration, candidates jockeying to succeed him have turned to making deals and courting allies.

Mr. Kan has pledged to resign after the passage of two bills that should get through Parliament on Friday, and the ruling Democratic Party of Japan's lawmakers are expected to choose their new leader Monday.

The leadership race is on, dominated by old-fashioned politicking aimed at winning over large party factions, many of which vote in unison. Gone for now is any real debate over how to deal with major national challenges—ranging from restraining a too-strong yen, to recovering from an earthquake and tsunami that claimed more than 20,000 lives, to dealing with a post-meltdown nuclear plant.
(Toko Sekiguchi. Factions Jostle for Power in Japan Premier Race. The Wall Street Journal. August 26, 2011.)

old-fashioned politicking aimed at winning over large party factions, many of which vote in unison

'Gustnado' Eyed in Deadly Indiana Stage Collapse

After studying footage of the weekend’s Indiana State Fair stage collapse, some experts suspect a “gustnado” caused the deadly accident.

Gustnadoes are defined as ground-based wind vortexes that sometimes form along the front of thunderstorms, MyFoxChicago.com reported Tuesday. While similar to twisters, gustnadoes are much weaker, with winds between 60 to 90 mph.
(Fox News. August 16, 2011.)

Radical overhaul of military retirement eyed
By Sharyl Attkisson

(CBS News) WASHINGTON - The military retirement system has long been considered untouchable - along with Social Security and Medicare. But in these days of soaring deficits, it seems everything is a potential target for budget cutters. A Pentagon-sponsored study says military pensions are no longer untouchable - they're unaffordable.
(CBS News. August 15, 2011.)

Three teens eyed in attack surrender
August 11, 2011|BY MORGAN ZALOT

THREE TEENS wanted in the July 29 beating of a 36-year-old man on 4th Street near Walnut surrendered to police yesterday, after officials from Mastery Charter School aided in their identification.
(The Philadelphia Inquirer. August 11, 2011.)

Damascus, Aleppo eyed as possible repatriation areas for Pinoys in Syria

The Philippine government is considering Damascus and Aleppo in Syria as relatively secure areas where Filipinos seeking repatriation can be picked up and brought to Manila.
(GMA News. August 17, 2011.)

US financial woe hits UAE markets hard
Neil Parmar

News about US economic troubles hit the UAE's markets hard in early-morning trading today.

The Dubai Financial Market (DFM) General Index fell more than 5 per cent this morning, which was its biggest drop since January. It is down 14 per cent from it's high in April.
(The National. August 7, 2011.)

sorrow
grief
regret

Obama to face economic woes on bus tour
By Stephen Collinson (AFP)

WASHINGTON — US President Barack Obama sets out to shore up his fragile political standing Monday, launching a bus tour through key Midwestern states which will resonate with voter anxiety over the economy.

Obama will spend three days trekking through Minnesota, Iowa and his adopted home state of Illinois, all of which he carried in the 2008 election, and which he can ill afford to lose when he seeks a second term next year.
(AFP. August 15, 2011.)

Tweet jams L.A. emergency lines
By NOAKI SCHWARTZ

LOS ANGELES — A rapper could face criminal charges after a tweet from his account incited a telephone flash mob that overwhelmed the emergency phone system at one of the busiest stations of the Los Angeles County sheriff’s department, the agency said Saturday.

The sheriff’s department alleges the Game tweeted the phone number of the Compton station Friday and told his 580,000 followers to call the number if they wanted an internship.

The southeast L.A. County station’s phones started ringing Friday evening, and the lines were jammed for more than two hours. During that time people with legitimate issues that included a missing person, spousal abuse and two robberies were also trying to call in, department spokesman Steve Whitmore said.
(Chicago Sun Times. August 14, 2011.)

Illinois House leaders mum on pension reform talks
By Doug Finke

Illinois House leaders say they still are working on legislation that would ease the state’s crushing pension burden, although they are closed-mouthed about what those changes will be and when the General Assembly will be asked to consider them.
(Rockford Register Star. August 14, 2011.)

Mum's the word.

Plan to lift roo exports prompts legal threat
Malcolm Brown
August 8, 2011

MOVES to vastly increase the export of kangaroo meat to China and Russia have provoked strong opposition from conservationists and sections of the indigenous community.

A new indigenous animal liberation organisation is threatening to take the government to the Federal Court to stop the proposed new exports, expected to greatly expand the $200 million industry.

The federal government had been working for some time to resume the export of kangaroo meat to Russia, a spokesperson for the Minister for Trade, Craig Emerson, said.
(The Sydney Morning Herald. August 8, 2011.)

mind-boggling

An historical first was recently completed, a GAO (Government Accountability Office) audit of the Federal Reserve after nearly 100 years in operation, and the results weren’t pretty.

The audit uncovered a mindboggling $16,000,000,000,000.00 that’s been secretly given to US banks and corporations and foreign banks around the world. Beginning in December 2007 through June 2010, the Federal Reserve gave secret bailouts to numerous world banks, corporations, and foreign governments. Of course, in today’s politically correct terminology the Federal Reserve doesn’t refer to them as bailouts; they’re labeled under the guise of an all-inclusive loan program.
(James Sandefer. Where do I get in line? Tucson Citizen. August 4, 2011.)

A little boy has made a mind-boggling recovery after being sucked into the frigid Pacific Ocean – and enduring more than 15 minutes underwater.

After spending the weekend in the ICU of OHSU Doernbecher Children's Hospital in Portalnd, Ore., Charles "Dale" Ostrander's parents were thrilled to see their little angel's miraculous recovery.
(Joyce Chen. Miracle on the Pacific Coast: Boy revives after nearly drowning, being underwater 15 minutes. New York Daily News. August 20, 2011.)

mind-boggling puzzle(非常に難解なパズル)

The official Windows Phone blog has announced the availability of two popular official Xbox Live games in the U.S. Marketplace for the Windows Phone. The two classic puzzle games are Minesweeper and the mind-boggling Sudoku.

These games will give fans of the Xbox a reason to cheer as they are the official versions and come with unique powerups and achievements.
(Two official Xbox Live games arrive on Windows Phone. Mobiletor.com. August 13, 2011.)

Parents Gunned Down Walking With Child
Wife killed, husband shot while walking with son.
By Brian Thompson and Shiba Russell

Authorities say a young Pakistani woman was killed and her husband was wounded when they were gunned down as they walked along a quiet neighborhood street with their 3-year-old son in northern New Jersey.

The Morris County prosecutor's office has said a preliminary investigation suggests the shooting was not random. A law enforcement source tells NBC New York that it is not being considered a hate crime.

"From what we have already determined ... it should be noted that this shooting clearly appears to be target specific and that there is not a continuing danger to the general public at large," said Morris County Prosecutor Robert Bianchi.
(NBC New York. August 17, 2011.)

Report: California hate crime rate remains steady
The Associated Press
Posted: 08/12/2011 10:20:01 AM PDT
Updated: 08/12/2011 03:04:09 PM PDT

SAN FRANCISCO—The overall number of hate crimes in California remained steady last year, but the number targeting Hispanics jumped significantly.

A state Department of Justice report released Thursday said there were 1,107 reported crimes motivated by race, religion, sexual orientation and other forms of bias in 2010. That's just seven more cases than in 2009.

While hate crimes against Jews, blacks and the LGBT community decreased, the state said hate crimes against Hispanics increased by 47 percent. Officials recorded 119 anti-Hispanic crimes in 2010, compared with 81 in the previous year.
(Mercury News. August 12, 2011.)

ballpark estimate

Give me a ballpark figure of next year's sales.

Watching too much television could shorten your life, a study suggests. Research carried out in Australia, and published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine, showed that every hour of TV watched after the age of 25 may shorten lifespan by 22 minutes.

According to one of the report's authors, Dr Lennert Veerman, from the School of Population Health at the University of Queensland, it puts long hours spent in front of the box "in the same ballpark as smoking and obesity". "While smoking rates are declining, watching TV is not, which has implications at a population level," he said.
(Alison Rourke. Too much television may shorten your life. The Guardian. August 16, 2011.)

in the right ballpark"というエントリもありこれは、(予想や概算が)大体あたっている、いい線いっている、というような意味だということも分かりました。

Some scientists note that a change of only a few degrees -- 6 or 8 degrees Fahrenheit -- in average global temperature can swing a moderate climate into an ice age, or warm it up considerably. Such swings have, in fact, been occurring throughout the planet's history, with accompanying changes in sea level of as much as 400 feet. The new IPCC report projects a total global sea-level rise of from six inches to three feet over the next century. " I think we're in the same ballpark using different methodologies, " said a co-author of the EPA report, Vijay K. Narayanan of Technical Resources International.
(The Washington Post. 1995.)

ここでも、"in the same ballpark"となっています。

in the same ballpark
If you say that one person or thing is in the same ballpark as another, you mean that the first person or thing is comparable to the second, or is as good or important as the second. This expression is used in American English.

SINGAPORE: The number of cases of the public making tough demands on frontline staff in government departments has been on the rise in the past few months.

Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong spoke of this trend in his National Day Rally on Sunday.

Channel NewsAsia finds out how North West Community Council deals with such problems.

"The new generation is very well-versed with all the media and everything, so they know all the assistance that's available. They want immediate assistance, like on the same day," said Jeyanthi Jayabala, senior manager of North West CDC.

To protect officers from abusive members of the public, cameras have been installed in meetings rooms. A "panic button" can also activate security officers when there's violence.
(Wayne Chan. Govt frontline staff face more demanding customers. Channel New Asia. August 16, 2011.)

well-versed in
well-versed on
well-versed with

be well-versed in American history

be well-versed on the technical issue

Can you lend me a hand with this package?
lend an ear to the teachings of one's parents

“This is the device educators have been eagerly awaiting for generations. This is the stuff of ‘Star Trek’ made real, and not just in terms of cosmetics, but in terms of functionality,” said Thomas White, the school’s iPad integration coordinator. “Tablets are the future of mobile computing, especially in an educational environment. The iPad is the right amount of machine for the pre-college classroom. The laptop is too much machine and does not lend itself to the mobile environment of a high school or a middle school. The smart phone, though powerful, is not enough. The tablet is just right.”
(Julia Clerk. Next Generation Learning. Los Angels Times. August 12, 2011.)

Basically, I had to put my children away for two years. "I had to put my wife away. I had to put my God away," Howard says of that time. "I had to lend myself to a movie for two years."
(Chicago Sun Times. 2005.)

(5) ― catcall

A chorus of boos rained down each time they announced his name, and with every catcall, every insult, he kept his head up and bit his tongue.
(Bob Macmanaman. Diamondbacks’ Justin Upton on a path to stardom? Tucson Citizen. July 21, 2011.)

Inside, student union leaders accused the Sarkozy government of trying to "privatize" universities and exploit worries over final exams to split the protest movement. Boos and catcalls greeted the speakers who wanted to end the strike as well as those who wanted to continue.
(Christian Science Monitor. 2009.)

whistles and catcalls
shouts and catcalls
hoots and catcalls

(4) ― cat's-paw

When Lobsang Sangay is sworn in as Tibet’s first elected prime minister he will face one of the most daunting challenges in international politics – to replace the Dalai Lama as the face of the Tibetan movement, confront China over its abuses in Tibet, while reassuring the restless younger generation of exiles that he can make progress towards an accommodation with Beijing.

“He has big shoes to fill and his challenge is to lead without the Dalai Lama. He must prevent the Tibetan movement sliding, establish good connections with the Indian government, which will be looking at him with suspicion that he will follow an American agenda,” said Mohan Guruswamy, director of India’s Centre for Policy Alternatives and a leading commentator on China.

He said he will have to inspire his own people at a time of transition and that he will have to be more ‘pro-active’ than the Dalai Lama has been to achieve this. “He will have to actively drum up support all over the world at a time when the Tibetan movement is becoming not militant, but more pro-active and he will have to establish his credibility. But the more he does that the more he will face charges that he is an American cat’s paw,” he added.
(Tibet's first prime minister: the challenges ahead. The Telegraph. August 10, 2011.)

An old fable, sometimes inaccurately attributed to Aesop, is so rich in parallels to human behavior that it has provided us with a legal theory and some lessons in business management.

The fable tells this story: A cat and a monkey are always hungry and always getting into mischief around the house. In the kitchen, some chestnuts have been roasting and are now ready to eat but are still in the hot embers of the fire. Using flattery — “I could do it, but you are SO much better at it” — the monkey talks the cat into retrieving the chestnuts, saying that they would share them. The cat pulls them out of the embers, burning her paw in the process, but the monkey runs off with them all.

The fable gave rise to the expression “cat’s paw,” to describe someone who is unwittingly manipulated into doing something. It’s a polite way of referring to a dupe or a stooge.
(James McCusker. ‘Cat’s paw’ fable offers employment law lesson. Snohomish County Business Journal. July 28, 2011.)

(3) ― fat cat

Fat-cat public officials are to be hit with higher pension contributions than previously thought, ministers announced yesterday. They will have to pay an extra 6 per cent of their salaries towards their gold-plated pensions, on top of what they already contribute. It had been expected that top civil servants and other senior figures such as chief constables, judges and hospital consultants would face a 5 per cent increase.

The move, which will also affect the highly-paid heads of large schools and the chief executives and department heads of local councils, will cost senior staff hundreds of pounds a year.
(Daniel Martin. Fat cats to pay 6% more for gold-plated pensions costing civil servants hundreds per year. The Daily Mail. July 19, 2011.)

OUR animal welfare friends are this week hoping one of our readers can provide a loving home for a clever lad called Cody.

The four-year-old Labrador cross is a very a sweet, affectionate and playful dog with a cheeky character and a fun spirit.

“Cody is house-trained and travels well in the car. He is a bit of a scaredy cat and suffers from anxiety. He is afraid of loud noises and being on his own. He would love for an area of his own to go and hide in to chill out when feeling scared.
(Graham Miller. Cody looking for a new home. Wishaw Press. August 8, 2011.)

London riots: Looting and violence continues

Police have condemned a wave of "copycat criminal activity" across London in a second night of looting and disorder following riots in Tottenham.

Officers had been attacked and a number of police vehicles had been damaged, the Metropolitan Police said.

A Footlocker shop in Brixton, south London, was set on fire while other nearby stores were looted.
(BBC News. August 8, 2011.)

copycat killing
copycat murder
copycat crime

When Prozac and copycat drugs were up for approval from 1986 through the early 1990s, the drug companies appeared aware of the need to keep the suicide issue from mushrooming.

― suds

Beer popsicle alert as ice beer hits Japan
Real ale buffs likely up in arms at Kirin's crazy Ice Plus Beer

We have some good news and some weird news for beer purists.

The good news is, Kirin has announced a new addition to its suds lineup, and for once it’s actual beer, not that “happoshu” blend of liquor and goodness-knows-what that Japanese breweries cook up to benefit from tax breaks.

The weird news is, Kirin’s Ice Plus Beer is designed to be consumed on ice. Yes -- in a glass, over a stack of fresh cubes of frozen water.
(Matt Alt. Beer popsicle alert as ice beer hits Japan. CNN. August 3, 2011.)

Kirin has announced a new addition to its suds lineup...

― chow

With the debt-limit bill finally signed into law, President Obama on Wednesday rewarded his staff with some burgers at Good Stuff Eatery.

The burger joint, created by “Top Chef” alum Spike Mendelsohn, is popular among the Capitol Hill lunch crowd.

Good Stuff’s menu even includes odes to the commander in chief and first lady — it features a “Prez Obama Burger” (which includes bacon, onion marmalade, Roquefort cheese and horseradish mayo) and a “Michelle Melt Free Range Turkey Burger” (topped with caramelized onions, Swiss cheese, tomato, lettuce and herb garden mayo).

Obama chowed down with staffers who were involved with the debt-ceiling discussions, including Jack Lew, Rob Nabors, Nancy Ann DeParle, Bruce Reed and Gene Sperling.
(Judy Kurtz. Obama rewards staff with burgers. The Hill. August 3, 2011.)

slake

SAN FRANCISCO — Data centers’ unquenchable thirst for electricity has been slaked by the global recession and by a combination of new power-saving technologies, according to an independent report on data center power use from 2005 to 2010.

The report, by Jonathan G. Koomey, a consulting professor in the civil and environmental engineering department at Stanford University, found that the actual number of computer servers declined significantly compared to 2010 forecasts because of this lowered demand for computing and because of the financial crisis of 2008 and the emergence of technologies like more efficient computer chips and computer server virtualization, which allows fewer servers to run more programs.

The slowing of growth in consumption contradicts a 2007 forecast by the Environmental Protection Agency that the explosive expansion of the Internet and the computerization of society would lead to a doubling of power consumed by data centers from 2005 to 2010.
(John Markoff. Data Centers’ Power Use Less Than Was Expected. The New York Times. July 31, 2011.)

thirst... has been slaked by the global recession and...

a whole lot

It turns out that the electricity used by data centers around the world increased a whole lot less from 2005 to 2010 than was originally predicted, according to new research by Stanford's Jonathan Koomey.

A big reason the power sucked up by the world's data centers only increased by about 56 percent over that five-year period rather than doubling as it did from 2000 to 2005? The global economic slowdown following the 2008 financial crisis resulted in a significant drop-off in new server installations, according to the Stanford professor.
(Damon Poeter. Study: Data Centers Sucking Up Less Power Than Predicted. PC Magazine. August 1, 2011.)

the electricity used by data centers... increased a whole lot less...

the electricity used by data centers... increased less...

Off-road racing is a whole lot different from more traditional racing. The course is rough. The drivers have to navigate hills and quick turns. And the spectators aren't behind massive steel fences. Our Josh Levs giving us a look here at the track as well as the rules.
(CNN. 2010.)

Al Pacino's daughter arrested on DWI charge

Al Pacino’s 21-year-old daughter was busted in lower Manhattan this morning for DWI after admitting she threw back a few beers and smoke pot, police sources told The Post.

Julie Marie Pacino, an aspiring film director, was nailed around 1:30 a.m. at a West Houston Street checkpoint near Washington Street, the sources said.

She had a male passenger in the car, a 2009 Mercedes with California plates that had an expired registration.
(New York Post. July 30, 2011.)

driving while intoxicated

Al Pacino’s 21-year-old daughter was busted in lower Manhattan...

...after admitting she threw back a few beers and smoke pot

Julie Marie Pacino, an aspiring film director, was nailed around 1:30 a.m.

Daddy’s little girl was hauled into the 7th Precinct...
