― teal

Households across the U.S. this Halloween are displaying hand-painted teal-colored pumpkins on their porches and lawns, a signal that children with food allergies can safely trick-or-treat there.

The Teal Pumpkin Project, being promoted as a new tradition by Virginia-based nonprofit Food Allergy Research & Education (FARE), aims to help raise awareness about food allergies by providing non-food treats for trick-or-treaters.

Teal, a dark blue-green, is the long-established color of food allergy awareness. Parents can visit the FARE website to download and print fliers and learn about common allergens (www.foodallergy.org).
(Daniel Gaitan. Painted pumpkins raising awareness about food allergies. Reuters. October 28, 2014.)

"Trick or treat"

食品偽装 ― bait and switch

The next time you sit down for some shrimp scampi, beware of a bait-and-switch.

Much of the shrimp sold in grocery stores and restaurants across the U.S. isn't exactly what it says on the package or the menu, a new survey claims. Using DNA testing, the marine conservation group Oceana sampled 143 shrimp products from U.S. stores and restaurants and found that as many as 30 percent misrepresented the crustaceans they contained.

For example, the researchers found that some shrimp labeled as being caught from the Gulf of Mexico were actually whiteleg shrimp raised in farms.

In other cases, one species was substituted for another. Samples sold as royal red shrimp or rock shrimp, two delicacies known for their lobster-like flavor, frequently turned out to be more common species.
(Dino Grandoni. The Shrimp You Buy May Not Be What You Think It Is. The Huffington Post. October 30, 2014.)

mislabel、あるいはmisrepresent(つまり表示上の間違い)

fraud(つまり詐欺)

bait and switch

Merriam Webster

a sales tactic in which a customer is attracted by the advertisement of a low-priced item but is then encouraged to buy a higher-priced one

As many as 50 senior members of the North Korean government and military have been publicly executed so far this year, according to South Korea's intelligence agency.

The victims of the purges - which the National Intelligence Service believes are continuing - include 10 members of the ruling Workers' Party who were executed by firing squad for watching South Korean soap operas, bribery or womanising.

Many of the officials singled out by Kim Jong-un, the North Korean leader, were reportedly close to Jang Song-thaek, Mr Kim's uncle, who was arrested in December 2013 and executed for a series of crimes against the state.
(Julian Ryall. North Korea executes members of Workers' Party for watching South Korean soap operas. The Telegraph. October 29, 2014.)

purge

hazmat

A 5-year-old boy who just returned from West Africa was transported to Bellevue Hospital Sunday with possible Ebola symptoms, according to law-enforcement sources.

The child was vomiting and had a 103-degree fever when he was carried from his Bronx home by EMS workers wearing hazmat suits, neighbors said. “He looked weak,” said a neighbor.
(5-year-old boy tested for Ebola in NYC after return from Africa. New York Post. October 27, 2014.)

hazardous materials

powwow

Following his recent trip to China, Apple Chief Executive Tim Cook described his powwow with China Vice Premier Ma Kai as "very open," as both men discussed matters regarding online security issues.

The security of users' online information has been a "white elephant" sort of topic, especially on the heels of the late August/early September "Fappening" involving leaked, often racy photos of several female celebrities.
(Lorenzo Tanos. Tim Cook Goes to China – Apple CEO’s Talks with China Official "Very Open." Modern Readers. October 26, 2014.)

powwow

Michelle Obama made yet another flub on the campaign trail Thursday when she apparently confused Colorado Democratic Sen. Mark Udall with his Republican rival.

Obama spoke in Denver Thursday as part of a campaign event for Udall, who is engaged in a heated battle with his Republican opponent, Rep. Cory Gardner.

She touted Udall's Senate record in her speech, and called him a "fifth-generation Coloradan."

"Mark understands what makes this state special," she said.

The only problem? Udall is not a fifth-generation Coloradan. In fact, he was born in Arizona and his father, former Rep. Mo Udall, served as a congressman from that state for decades.
(Michelle Obama apparently mixes up Colorado Senate candidates at campaign event. Fox News. October 23, 2014.)

The incident followed another gaffe earlier this month by the first lady and the White House as they campaigned for Democratic Senate candidates.

While campaigning for Iowa Democratic Rep. Bruce Braley, who is in a tight Senate race against Republican Joni Ernst, the first lady repeatedly botched the candidate’s name, calling him “Bruce Bailey.”
(ibid.)

Spot

Spot Will Cost You: Pet Rents Become Apartment Fad

Los Angeles (AP) -- Man's best friend is taking a bite out of renters' wallets.

Pet security deposits register in the hundreds of dollars and are getting steeper. Now, a monthly rental payment ranging from $10 to $50 is quickly becoming the norm, adding to the cost. Apartment managers nationwide say they require some safety net against pet damage, while others won't allow animals at all.

The rents and deposits pay for dog-poop picker-uppers, cleaning services and more, but some managers say they charge because they can. Many residents decry the move, arguing they are being bilked to keep their cats and canines.
(Spot Will Cost You: Pet Rents Become Apartment Fad. CBS Local. October 22, 2014.)

Spot Will Cost You: Pet Rents Become Apartment Fad

つまり、"Spot Will Cost You"とは、"Dog Will Cost Your"(犬を飼えばお金がかかる)と言っているのと同じことです。

Spot the Dog

hazing scandal
locker-room hazing scandal

New Jersey school board suspends five coaches in hazing scandal

Sayreville N.J. - New Jersey school officials voted on Tuesday to suspend five high school coaches in a locker-room hazing scandal that has led to criminal sex abuse charges against teen football players.

Head coach George Najjar and four coaching assistants at Sayreville War Memorial High School were officially suspended by the Sayreville Board of Education during a raucous meeting in which dozens of parents, students and alumni voice their strong support for the coaching staff.
(Sascha Brodsky. New Jersey school board suspends five coaches in hazing scandal. Reuters. October 21, 2014.)

to harass by exacting unnecessary or disagreeable work
(Merriam-Webster Dictionary)

To initiate, as into a college fraternity, by exacting humiliating performances from or playing rough practical jokes upon.

New England raking in millions from leaf peepers

AFFREY, N.H. (AP) — On Mount Monadnock, hikers file up the 3,165-foot peak in lockstep, protected from drizzling rain by a luminous golden canopy of leaves. They're not just gazing at foliage — they're looking at cold, hard cash.

Money really does grow on trees in autumn in New England, and all six states are raking it in. Officials say tourists will spend upward of $3 billion to catch a glimpse of the red, yellow and orange hues — and the windfall is steadily rising as the economy regains strength.
(Associated Press. October 19, 2014.)

leaf peepers

The term "Leaf Peeper" is used both with appreciation (for those businesses that benefit from the millions that pour into New England each fall) and with disdain (from those who have to use the roads that are popular with leaf peepers).

Amazon is getting into the online grocery business. The brownstone Brooklyn neighborhood is the first in New York City for AmazonFresh, the new web retailer's point-and-click home for food shopping.

AmazonFresh has launched its Grocery Delivery service in Brooklyn and there are plans to expand it into new areas. Online retail Giant Amazon has chosen Brooklyn brownstone neighborhood as its first spot to launch its online grocery business. AmazonFresh, is going to offer more than 500,000 items for home delivery.
(Justin Chase. AmazonFresh online grocery service Debuts in Brooklyn. Capital OTC. October 19, 2014.)

さて、

the brownstone Brooklyn neighborhood
Brooklyn brownstone neighborhood

hand over fist

SAN FRANCISCO — Google is still pulling in money hand over fist, but Wall Street is hungry for the company’s next act.

On a conference call with analysts on Thursday, after Google reported its third-quarter earnings, the questions came fast and furious: How will Google match Apple’s new payment system? Can YouTube topple television? Is Google serious about trying to challenge Amazon on same-day delivery?

The problem was that in the earnings report, the Internet giant showed signs that its ultraprofitable business in search advertising was starting to slow.
(Conor Dougherty. Analysts Ask What’s Next for Google. New York Times. October 16, 2014.)

Google is still pulling in money hand over fist

money hand"ではありません。"(Google) is pulling in money"を修飾しているのが、"hand over fist"という成句です。

"but..." Google is still pulling in money..."

The mad bomber who targeted Bar Pitti on Sixth Avenue near Bleecker Street last Friday emerged from a subway grate, tossed a smoking road flare at the eatery’s outdoor area and then made a clean getaway back underground.
(Jamie Schram. Restaurant smoke-bomb probers eye bad Yelp reviews. New York Post. October 15, 2014.)

made a clean getaway

clean hit(野球でのクリーンヒット、文句なしのヒット)
clean shot(見事なショット)
clean trick(まんまとひっかかったトリック)

fudge

It's no surprise that some folks fudge their ages to get on Facebook. Anna Stoehr did. But she's no preteen trying to sign up before the network's minimum age of 13.

She cleared that mark more than a century ago.

Now 113 and reportedly Minnesota's oldest resident, Stoehr is a lifelong fan of learning new things. With the help of a friend, she went to sign up for Facebook this month.

According to CNN affiliate KARE-TV in Minneapolis-St. Paul, when she found the earliest birth year Facebook's sign-up page provides is 1905, she claimed to be a spry 99 years old.
(Doug Gross. 113-year-old woman had to fake her age to get on Facebook. CNN. October 14, 2014.)

webisode

McDonald's (MCD) is suddenly talking about what's in its burgers. And what's in its nuggets. And, yes, even about the icky topic of pink slime.

In an unusual, perhaps risky, social media campaign that's clearly targeting Millennials, the fast-food chain on Monday rolled out the first stage of a promotional effort dotted with "behind-the-scenes" webisodes that it's dubbed: "Our Food. Your Questions."
McDonald's is asking folks -- including skeptics -- to submit questions via Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and other social media. McDonald's will respond to some of those questions with webisodes and other social content about how the food is produced and prepared.
(Bruce Horovitz. McDonald's to customers: Ask about food quality. USA Today. October 14, 2014.)

For all of the obesity-related grief that the major restaurant chains have been taking from nutritional critics, a surprising pat on the back came out of the blue on Wednesday from the world of public health.

Major restaurant chains are seriously slicing away at calories in the new items they roll out compared with their traditional items, according to the exhaustive study by Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. These new items — mostly sandwiches and salads — contain 60 fewer calories, on average, than their conventional menu items, the study finds. For perspective, a single Oreo cookie is about 53 calories.
(Bruce Horovitz. Restaurant chains trimming the fat, study shows. USA Today. October 8, 2014.)

for perspective

When the only way to get an often fatal disease is through contact with body fluids, it makes good sense to be very careful about sexual partners and practices. But since Ebola victims can infect others only when they are showing symptoms -- high fever, vomiting, diarrhea, weakness and aches -- physical intimacy probably isn't a common way of transmitting the disease.

However, the Ebola virus can survive in semen for months after a man recovers from the infection, posing an ongoing threat to sexual partners long after he is well. At a time when a man's bloodstream is swimming with antibodies, and he is immune to the disease, he still may be able to infect others.

As a result, Ebola survivors in West Africa and elsewhere are being advised to remain celibate or use condoms for three months after their release from treatment centers. In Lofa County, Liberia, where the epidemic began six months ago, UNICEF workers doing outreach work were told the story of one local man who recovered and infected his girlfriend through sex, according to a UNICEF official. The woman later died.
(Sex in a time of Ebola. Washington Post. October 8, 2014.)

catfish

Can the federal government steal your identity in order to trick your social circle into incriminating themselves? That question will hit the court system next week when a woman suing the federal government for "catfishing" her friends has her case heard in New York.

The Drug Enforcement Administration set up a fake Facebook account for Sonia Arquiett, who was arrested in a cocaine case, in order to lure her friends to reveal "incriminating drug secrets." The feds claim that Arquiett consented to the ruse because she "implicitly consented by granting access to the information stored in her cellphone and by consenting to the use of that information to aid in … ongoing criminal investigations."
(Feds Catfish Friends, Associates of Woman to Obtain Incriminating Info. PJ Media. October 8, 2014.)

A catfish is no longer just "a type of fish that has a large head and long thin parts that look like a cat's whiskers around its mouth." According to Merriam-Webster, there's another definition for the word, one that "refers to a person who sets up a false social networking profile for deceptive purposes."
(Samantha Highfill. Merriam-Webster officially gives 'catfish' a new definition. Entertainment Weekly. May 20, 2014.)

In the area of more intimate relationships, catfish, a technology-related term, refers to a person who sets up a false social networking profile for deceptive purposes. Catfish was popularized by the documentary and television series of the same name and by last year's strange story of football player Manti Te'o's nonexistent girlfriend.
(A Sample of New Dictionary Words for 2014. )

"Agents of the government should not should not (sic) be doing this," Kinsella said. "The 'capital-G government' did this."
(DEA sued for impersonating woman on Facebook. New York Post. October 7, 2014.)

Superman and Batman each have a new movie coming out in the next year. They battled thugs in the' 30s, crime syndicates in the' 40s, communism in the' 50s, corrupt politicians and inner demons in the intervening decades. They may be ready to fight capital-E evil post-9/11.
(Denver Post. 2005.)

For 700 years he's spent his days forming and stacking cubes of debris as high as skyscrapers, with only his pet cockroach as a companion - the little guy is capital-L lonely.
(Houston Chronicle. 2008.)

Collins Cobuild Dictionary of Idioms

You say, for example, 'Life with a capital L' or 'Art with a capital A' to draw attention to the word 'life' or 'art' and emphasize its significance. You often do this to suggest that someone is taking something too seriously.

You also use this expression to suggest that someone or something is a very good example of the kind of thing mentioned, or has a particular quality to a great extent.

While it may seem to be the last thing the social media giant should be dabbling in, new reports have emerged that Facebook will be making forays into the field of healthcare.

A recent Reuters article reveals that Facebook, which is already been subjected to withring fire in the form of criticism over its privacy standards, is planning to develop support communities in order to place its users into contact with others that suffer from similar ailments and afflictions. Another Facebook initiative is looking into preventative care app development, similar to work being done with Apple's HealthKit app and other monitoring devices such as FitBit.
(Facebook taking first steps into healthcare field. Beta Wired. October 5, 2014.)

The furore over Bendgate -- the supposed desire for the frame of the iPhone six to bend -- appears to have died down, but now Apple might have another "discussion" on their hands -- and this time clients are literally pulling their hair out over the issue.

The most recent difficulty with the iPhone six handset is that some clients are reporting their hair becoming caught while making calls.
(With Bendgate behind it, Apple may now have to handle another issue. Beta Wired. October 5, 2014.)

If you say that someone is tearing their hair out or pulling their hair out, you mean that they are very angry, upset, or anxious about something

― fuel

Climate change could be fueling more boy than girl births, researchers say

New research by Japanese scientists published in the journal Fertility and Sterility suggests that climate change could be linked to a changing male-female birth ratio. According to the research, more male fetuses have been dying in the country, corresponding with regular climate fluctuations. As well as this, fewer boys are being born than girls.

During both the unusually hot summer of 2010 and the unusually cold winter of 2011, more fetuses were miscarried, and 9 months after both occurrences, there were fewer males being born than females.
(Joe Chivers. Climate change could be fueling ore boy than girl births, researchers say. Science Recorder. October 3, 2014.)

Climate change could be fueling more boy than girl births, researchers say

問題は"fuel(ing)"の解釈です。

This year, the boom in smart-phone usage is fueling new experiments that reward customers for actually visiting stores.
(San Francisco Chronicle. 2010.)

support; stimulate

"fuel(ing) more boys than girl births"

internet of things

British computer chip designer ARM is creating an operating system to power new kinds of internet-connected devices.

The company is designing the mbed OS software to require as little battery power and memory as possible, and will not charge for its use.

It said the code would allow developers to create products more quickly.

However, it will work only with kit fitted with chips based on ARM's Cortex-M designs.

That mean that despite the Cambridge-based firm's stated aim of addressing "fragmentation" in the so-called "internet of things" (IoT) market, the code will not work on devices that use Intel's Quark and Atom chips or Imagination's Mips processors.
(Leo Kelion. ARM creates operating system for 'internet of things.' BBC News. October 1, 2014.)

Microsoft on Tuesday lifted the veil on the next version of Windows: Windows 10.

At an event in San Francisco focused on corporate users, Microsoft previewed early elements of the next generation of its iconic computer operating system.

It represents the first step in a whole new generation of Windows, said Microsoft executive Terry Myerson.

Yes, the company is skipping the "Windows 9" moniker. Why skip 9?

"When you see the product in its fullness, I think you will agree with us that it is a more appropriate name," Myerson said.
(Nancy Blair. Microsoft unveils first look at Windows 10. USA Today. September 30, 2014.)

Microsoft is expected to reveal a new moniker for its Windows operating system at an invite-only event next Tuesday.

In recent years, under the stewardship of Steve Ballmer, we've seen Windows 7 and Windows 8 names appear on Redond's flagship product, after the launch of the disastrous Vista brand.
(Kelly Fiveash. Microsoft on the Threshold of a new name for Windows next week. The Register. September 27, 2014.)

(1)"monk"

(4)"monarch"
