quid pro quo

("on the period"の投稿を参照。)

Fox News Channel accused Donald Trump of asking the network for a $5 million donation as a “quid pro quo” in return for Trump’s promise to appear in Thursday night’s Republican debate, as an extraordinary feud between the right’s best-known media platform and the Republican party’s presidential front-runner overshadowed the last debate before the Iowa caucuses.
(Without Trump onstage, Republican debate turns to policies. The Washington Post. January 28, 2016.)

quid pro quo

something for something

ヤバい ― go figure

Go figure! Game victory seen as artificial intelligence milestone

In what they called a milestone achievement for artificial intelligence, scientists said on Wednesday they have created a computer program that beat a professional human player at the complex board game called Go, which originated in ancient China.

The feat recalled IBM supercomputer Deep Blue's 1997 match victory over chess world champion Garry Kasparov. But Go, a strategy board game most popular in places like China, South Korea and Japan, is vastly more complicated than chess.
(Will Dunham. Go figure! Game victory seen as artificial intelligence milestone. Reuters. January 27, 2016.)

Go figure!

used when you tell someone a fact and you then want to say that the fact is surprising, strange or stupid
(Cambridge Advanced Learner’s Dictionary & Thesaurus)

(go) try to (figure) it out

― bop

Uber is using the classic tactic of misdirection to keep drunken passengers from abusing drivers.

The ride-hailing service is providing the tipsy in the North Carolina city of Charlotte with the children's toy Bop It to keep them occupied so that their sober drivers don't have to put up with any high jinks, nonsense or abuse.

"Folks there have found it's a great way to keep drunk riders entertained so they don't distract their driver," Joe Sullivan, Uber's chief security officer, said in a blog post.
(Katie Collins. Uber's trick for taming drunks? A children's toy. CNET. January 27, 2016.)

Bop the toy, not the Uber driver.

― a shoulder to cry on

Having lots of friends online doesn't mean you'll have more people to pick you up when you're down. Research published last week in The Royal Society Open Science journal shows that we tend to keep our friend groups small -- on the internet and in real life.

Study author and Oxford psychologist Robin Dunbar analyzed a survey of 3,375 Facebook users in the United Kingdom. He found that, despite having about 150 Facebook friends on average, the participants would only turn to about four of those friends in an “emotional crisis.” They relied on about 14 for “sympathy.”
(Casey Williams. Only 4 Of Your Facebook Friends Really Matter, New Study Finds. Huffington Post. January 25, 2016.)

Time currently spent on Facebook keeping dying friendships on life support could be spent developing new, more meaningful friendships. And making new friends, Dunbar concludes, is probably a better use of one's time.

“When you need that shoulder to cry on, you need a real shoulder -- a virtual shoulder simply doesn't do the job.”

If you don't work at it, a Facebook friend will inevitably become "an acquaintance you once knew," Dunbar wrote.
(ibid.)

"shoulder to cry on"というのが今日の表現です。

The Washington, D.C. area's Metro trains will begin providing a limited service starting at 7 a.m. on Monday, the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority said on Sunday, adding that fares will not be charged.

Also, the bus system will only run on 22 routes, and avoid hilly terrain, narrow side streets and other areas that could experience problems from the major blizzard that hit the U.S. capital over the weekend. The buses will run every 30 minutes, WMATA said in a news release.
(Washington's Metro system to run limited service on Monday: WMATA. Reuters. January 24, 2015.)

Metro will run bare-bones service Monday; local officials urge people to stay off the roads

Metro will run extremely, extremely limited (and free) service Monday. Meanwhile, local jurisdictions are working to plow roads, and DC is recruiting people to help shovel sidewalks. What do you think of the region's snow recovery efforts?
(David Alpert. Metro will run bare-bones service Monday; local officials urge people to stay off the roads. Greater Greater Washington. January 24, 2016.)

Astronomers have spent decades scouring the heavens for signals from aliens on other planets, but to no avail.

Rather than being too far away, or too technologically advanced for us to spot, however, researchers now believe there is a much simpler reason our efforts have been met with deafening silence - ET is already extinct.

A group of astrobiologists has claimed that life on other planets, if it managed to get going at all, would likely be brief and would die out quickly.
(Richard Gray. Have aliens become EXTINCT? Experts claim that even if extraterrestrial life formed on other planets, it would have already died. Daily Mail. January 21, 2016.)

Hobson's choice

Largely unnoticed by their targets, the human resources departments of large corporations are beginning to gather spy-agency-quality intelligence on their current and future employees. The hottest topic in human resources is “predictive analytics,” synthesizing a worker’s traits and behaviors to estimate how he or she will perform in the future.

Predictive analytics will fundamentally alter the relationship between employee and enterprise. It will redraw the boundaries of worker privacy and managerial discretion. Either by court case or legislation, it will change the law. “Today’s workers are left with a Hobson’s choice of giving up their privacy or giving up their job, if the predictive analytics even allow them to have the job,” wrote University of Wyoming associate professor Robert Sprague in a law journal.
(Rodd Wagner. Your boss may be spying on you (and you might welcome it): Column. USA Today. January 20, 2016.)

today's workers are left with a Hobson's choice of giving up their privacy or giving up their job

Hobson's choice

weight off one's shoulders

If students want weight off their shoulders, they should look no further than the water dispenser in the cafeteria.

A study by NYU Langone Medical Center released Tuesday found a statistically significant reduction in the obesity levels of New York City students who attend 1,127 public schools with free water available in lunch rooms.

The study of over 1 million kindergarten through 8th grade students found that schools with so-called water jets — which resemble Slushee machines — saw a reduction in obesity among boys of nearly 1% and .6% in girls after the dispensers were installed.
(Stephen Rex Brown. Water machines available in schools can help kids lose weight. New York Daily News. January 19, 2016.)

weight off their shoulders

Though prior research warns that sleep deprivation may increase the risk of type 2 diabetes, a new study suggests that "catch-up" sleep might reverse that risk -- at least in the short-term.

Short-changing sleep during the week only to sleep in for long periods on the weekend is a common pattern in the United States, according to the study authors. And, previous research has suggested that getting just four or five hours of sleep a night can boost type 2 diabetes risk by nearly 20 percent.

But the new study hints that that risk might be reversed with just two days of extra sleep.
(Alan Mozes. Catch-Up Sleep May Reverse Type 2 Diabetes Risk Tied to Sleep Loss: Study. Philly.com. January 18, 2016.)

catch-up sleep

"catch-up"とは、

hatchet job

A meta-study claiming those who use e-cigarettes are less likely to quit smoking than those who don't has been blasted as an "unscientific hatchet job."

The controversial research published in the Lancet Respiratory Medicine and co-authored by Professor Stanton Glantz reviewed 38 studies from across the globe and came to the conclusion that those who used e-cigarettes were 28 percent less likely to quit regular cigarettes than those who didn’t vape at all.

"The irony is that quitting smoking is one of the main reasons both adults and kids use e-cigarettes, but the overall effect is less, not more, quitting," Glantz claimed.

The study suffers from critical flaws, scientists and tobacco control experts conclude, which make its conclusions deeply suspect.
(Guy Bentley. Study Claiming E-Cigarettes Make Quitting Harder Exposed As 'Unscientific Hatchet Job.'The Daily Caller. January 17, 2016.)

hatchet job

No good deed goes unpunished.

"No good deed goes unpunished."

As the saying goes, "no good deed goes unpunished," which a West Yorkshire, UK woman learned the hard way when she recently tried to buy a homeless man a meal. Mother of two Claire Varin stopped in a Halifax town centre McDonald’s for breakfast one morning when she spied a disheveled, unshaven man with a backpack sitting at a table by himself eating ketchup right out of the container.

After watching the man eat ketchup for about 10 minutes, Varin assumed the worst, and figured that the man was homeless and starving and had just come in to the restaurant to get out of the cold. Good Samaritan that she is, Varin decided to take action and went up to the counter and purchased a meal for the man. She says that she then took the food over to the man and placed it in front of him, saying, "This is for you."
(Stacey Ritzen. A Woman Ended Up With Egg On Her Face After Buying McDonald’s For A ‘Homeless’ Man. Uproxx. January 14, 2016.)

"No good deed goes unpunished."

jackpot

なんと、1.6 billion USD(日本円で1,680億円)ということです。

The Powerball lightning bolt has finally struck. Lucky ticket holders in three states — California, Florida and Tennessee — will split a record $1.6 billion Powerball jackpot that had lured of millions of lottery hopefuls into a frenzied buying spree until the last moments.

The winners beat the 1-in-292.2 million odds by picking the magic combination: 4, 8, 19, 27, 34 and Powerball 10.
(Winners in 3 states to split record $1.6B Powerball jackpot. USA Today. January 14, 2016.)

pontoon

A dozen children who plunged into a dam when a concrete pontoon overturned and landed on them at a scout camp on Tuesday evening are lucky to be alive, a paramedic who treated them said.

Seven children aged between 11 and 15 were hospitalised, mainly with neck, shoulder and spinal injuries, after the pontoon flipped at Baden-Powell Park in Samford, north of Brisbane, about 6.15pm.
(Kim Stephens. Seven children injured when pontoon flips at Samford scout camp. Brisbane Times. January 13, 2016.)

a three metre by three metre concrete pontoon

written in stone

The doctor told me I have taken down every medical report on the life expectancy of the kind of cancer I have. The usual expectancy is two to three years, I'm on 13 years now, and they don't know why, and they don't know what I'm doing different.

They are one of the main reasons, I'm still here to help others realize it's not written in stone. Things can be changed, but you have to do your share too and you have to give up some things but you can fight this or anything life throws at you, don't just sit and take it. Do something about it.
(Kathy Golemiec. Realize things aren’t written in stone. NG News. January 7, 2016.)

it's not written in stone.

Things can be changed...

If you say that something such as an agreement, policy, or rule is not set in stone, you are pointing out that it is not permanent and that it can be changed.

HOW TALL WILL YOUR CHILD BE? THIS FORMULA ISN'T CARVED IN STONE, BUT IT DOES seem to be relatively successful at predicting adult height. For girls: Subtract 5 in. from dad's height and keep mom's height constant - your daughter should fall somewhere between the two. So, a girl born to a father who is 5 ft. 10 in. (178 cm) and a mother who's 5 ft. 7 in. (170 cm) should grow to somewhere between 5 ft. 5 in. (165 cm) and 5 ft. 7 in. (170 cm).
(Today's Parent. 2005.)

She was fired, she says, for being pregnant. One week before she was due to give birth and go on an eight-week pre-approved maternity leave, her boss announced she was being permanently replaced " because of the length of time the position would be vacant." "You can't believe how angry I am," says Soreo-Yasher, whose family has been struggling to make it without her $ 35,000 salary. "If you're going to have a family, you better make sure it's written in stone somewhere that you will get your job back. Because they can do this to you."
(USA Today. 1991.)

rapefugee

German protesters seething over a series of sexual assaults of women by migrants on New Year's Eve brought tensions to a flashpoint in Cologne, where police unleashed water cannons and tear gas to control crowds.

Fallout from the holiday attacks — in which dozens of women in the western German city endured a horrifying “gauntlet” of groping and violence by mobs of men — has heightened anger over the country’s welcoming attitude toward migrants and refugees.

Dueling groups took over the streets Saturday, including 1,700 anti-Muslim demonstrators who threw bottles and firecrackers at cops and carried signs reading, "Rapefugees Not Welcome," and shouting, "Merkel out," denouncing the open-door policy of Chancellor Angela Merkel, who welcomed 1.1 million refugees and migrants to Germany in 2015.
(Mary Kay Linge. Germans slam 'rapefugees' in wake of mass sexual attack. New York Post. January 10, 2016.)

rapefugee

dorky

Gizmodo reports from the Consumer Electronics Show, where the company just introduced the First Response Pregnancy Pro test, which they proudly tout as “the first pregnancy test that syncs with your smartphone.”
(Kelly Faircloth. This Connected Pregnancy Test Is Dorky, But It's the Future of Fertility Products. Jezebel. January 8, 2016.)

dorky

― peanuts

Jan 6 South Korea should pay the United States "very substantially" for maintaining 28,000 troops there to help defend it from the North, Republican presidential contender Donald Trump told CNN on Wednesday, a day after Pyongyang detonated a nuclear device.

Trump told the cable television network: "We get paid nothing, we get paid peanuts" for deploying the troops to South Korea. But Seoul, still technically at war with North Korea, has shouldered part of Washington's cost for stationing its troops in the country since 1991.
(Trump says South Korea pays 'peanuts' for U.S. troop presence. Reuters. January 7, 2016.)

we get paid peanuts

Second Amendment

An emotional Obama flexes his executive muscle on gun control

While formally announcing executive orders on gun control, President Obama said Tuesday that "Second Amendment rights are important, but so are other rights" such as freedom of religion and freedom of assembly.
(An emotional Obama flexes his executive muscle on gun control. The Washington Post. January 5, 2016.)

Second Amendment

schnoz

A man who had his penis ripped off in a horror accident in childhood is to lose his virginity to an "award winning" dominatrix.

Mohammed Abad from Edinburgh is to rendezvous with Charlotte Rose in London after a dinner date this week.

Rose, a sexual freedom campaigner, offered to have sex with Mohammed after learning he had surgery to fit an 8-inch bionic penis which has only just begun working.
(Man fitted with bionic penis will finally lose his virginity aged 43 to £200-an-hour dominatrix. Mirror. January 4, 2016.)

A man too embarrassed to take a selfie — because he was born without a schnoz — can finally do so, thanks to a plastic surgeon with a nose for news.

Li Ming, 23, was born with the rare deformity and given up for adoption by his parents in the southwest province of Chengdu, China, according to the People’s Daily of China.

A plastic surgeon learned of Li’s plight last year — and offered to do the nose-crafting work free of charge.
(David K. Li. Man born without nose takes first selfie after getting free schnoz. New York Post. January 4, 2016.)

schnoz

bitten by the bug

The smart-home bug has bitten Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg. In a Sunday evening Facebook post, the billionaire entrepreneur announced his intention to build a connected-home system akin to the fictional character Tony Stark’s J.A.R.V.I.S. system, from the Iron Man comic and movie series

Zuckerberg says his design will start out with the basics that most pre-fab systems offer today: lighting controls, a programmable thermostat, and streaming music on demand. While it's unlikely to ever be as powerful as Tony Stark's fantasy system, Zuckberg says his will eventually be controlled by voice commands, that it will learn to recognize visitors at the door, and that it will monitor his newborn daughter’s room and alert him and his wife when there’s a problem.
(Ed Oswald. Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg to build his own AI-infused smart home system. Techhive. January 3, 2016.)

The smart-home bug has bitten Facebook founder

be bitten by the bug

Collins Cobuild Dictionary of Idioms

If you are bitten by the gardening bug, for example, or are bitten by the ating bug, you become very enthusiastic about gardening or acting, and you start doing it a lot.

Lose weight: Year after year, it's America's No. 1 resolution. Maybe it's yours.

But, as you probably know all too well, most weight-loss resolutions end up broken. Research from the University of Scranton suggests that one-third of people who ring in the New Year with resolutions throw in the towel by February. Meanwhile, a quarter of resolvers don't even make it a full week. But experts say that perhaps willpower isn't the problem. Making a resolution to lose weight in the first place is.

"A lot of people in the health and wellness industry have known this for a long time – that diets and resolutions to lose weight don't work for the vast majority of people," says Michelle May, physician and author of "Eat What You Love, Love What You Eat." "Rather, dieting or focusing on weight loss leads to weight cycling and long-term weight gain."
(K. Aleisha Fetters. Why You Shouldn't Resolve to Lose Weight This Year. US News & World Report. December 31, 2015.)

weight cycling
