ー get-up

It's that time of year when celebrities apologize for their offensive Halloween costumes.

So, who's immediately regretting her choice of holiday wear this year? That would be Hilary Duff, who attended the Casamigos Halloween Party Friday in Beverly Hills. The Younger and Lizzie Maguire star went out with her boyfriend, trainer Jason Walsh, dressed as a pilgrim and a Native American. She had on a short black outfit, and he wore a feather headdress and face paint.
(Hilary Duff is 'SO sorry' about her offensive Halloween costume. USA Today. October 31, 2016.)

And so, Duff tweeted that she was "SO sorry" for offending people with her get-up. "It was not properly thought through," she said.
(ibid.)

Merriam-Webster

an unusual outfit or costume

eat one's words

A North Carolina grandma was just trying to teach her husband a lesson on wasteful spending on Saturday when she forked over $10 for a scratch-off lottery ticket.

But the lesson backfired and Glenda Blackwell, 57, won a cool $1M after purchasing a winning Carolina Millions ticket from her local Leicester Suttles Quik Mart.

"I was going to be ugly and buy a scratch off to show him they didn't hit," Blackwell told WLOS.

Blackwell bought the ticket in an effort to get her husband Buddy to save his money after he asked her to buy him two Powerball tickets.

"I had to eat my words, but they were worth eating," Blackwell quipped.
(Alexandra Klausner. Grandma wins $1M lottery while teaching husband not to play. New York Post. October 26, 2016.)

had to eat my words

pull up

Of course Bob Dylan ignored the Nobel Prize, he’s the the antithesis of a pop icon

Bob Dylan is being taken to task for his silence after he was announced the winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature, but as Alan Franks writes, the impact of his work cannot be denied – and his aplomb here is just part of the package。

It had to happen. Someone in the Swedish Academy just had to pull Bob Dylan up on his manners.
(Alan Franks. Of course Bob Dylan ignored the Nobel Prize, he’s the the antithesis of a pop icon. The Independent. October 26, 2016.)

To check the action of: The remark pulled him up short.

― lights-out

The heyday of Apple's lights-out iPhone growth has passed.

Since introducing the hugely popular iPhone 6 two years ago, the tech giant has labored to spark the intense consumer passion it has counted on to make the iPhone an even-better seller year after year.

Apple is still struggling to reignite interest. The iPhone 7, which went on sale last month, has an improved camera and is water resistant. But it looks an awful lot like the iPhone 6, and that may not give consumers enough enticement to upgrade.
(Ben Fox Rubin. iPhone sales slump. Apple still raking in billions. CNET. October 25, 2016.)

lights-out

if a machine or manufacturing process runs lights-out, it is controlled by a computer and does not need a human to be present in order to operate or supervise it

A little dishonesty goes a long way. Scientists who studied the brain activity of people who told small lies to benefit themselves found that these fibs appeared to pave the way to telling whoppers later.

The findings, published in the journal Nature Neuroscience, demonstrate how self-serving lies can escalate and offer a window into the processes in the brain at work.

It’s commonly held wisdom that small transgressions often lead to bigger and bigger ones, study coauthor Tali Sharot of University College London said in a news briefing.
(Amina Khan. Neuroscientists show how tiny fibs snowball into big lies. Los Angeles Times. October 24, 2016.)

whopper

Hillary Clinton has vaulted to a double-digit advantage in the inaugural ABC News 2016 election tracking poll, boosted by broad disapproval of Donald Trump on two controversial issues: His treatment of women and his reluctance to endorse the election’s legitimacy.

Likely voters by a vast 69-24 percent disapprove of Trump’s response to questions about his treatment of women. After a series of allegations of past sexual misconduct, the poll finds that some women who’d initially given him the benefit of the doubt have since moved away.
(Clinton Vaults to a Double-Digit Lead. ABC News. October 23, 2016.)

...some women who’d initially given him the benefit of the doubt have since moved away.

benefit of the doubt

doubt(疑い、嫌疑)というbenefit(ベネフィット、利益)とは日本語としてはやや腑に落ちないものがあります。

bad hombre

It was expected that Donald Trump would double down on his determined plan to build a wall while addressing the topic of immigration Wednesday night. But what wasn’t expected, was his comment that followed.

“We have some bad hombres here, and we’re going to get them out,” Trump promised.

Hillary Clinton grinned as Trump finished his statement.

Thousands of people took to Twitter to discuss Trump’s bilingual moment, and people began to ask: Who are the “bad hombres”?

Merriam-Webster was quick to jump in to define the new term Trump introduced on the debate stage.
(Jennifer Earl. Donald Trump's "bad hombres" comment causes confusion. CBS News. October 19, 2016.)

2016年のWord of the Yearになるかもしれません!?

A defiant Donald Trump used the high-profile setting of the final presidential debate here Wednesday night to amplify one of the most explosive charges of his candidacy: that if he loses the election, he might consider the outcome illegitimate because the process is rigged.

Questioned directly as to whether he would accept the outcome should Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton prevail on Nov. 8, Trump demurred. "I will keep you in suspense," the Republican nominee said. Clinton called Trump's answer "horrifying," saying he was "talking down our democracy."
(Trump refuses to say he will accept election results; Clinton calls it 'horrifying.' Chicago Tribune. October 19, 2016.)

the process is rigged

run in the family

Do Running Injuries Run in the Family?

If you give an identical training program to 10 different runners, you’ll get 10 different results—even if they all start from the same baseline and follow the training program faithfully. This idea of genetic variation in the response to training has been discussed a lot over the past few years, thanks in part to books like David Epstein’s The Sports Gene.
(Alex Hutchinson. Do Running Injuries Run in the Family? Runner's World. November 11, 2015.)

― cozy

Emails obtained by Motherboard show that Pittsburgh Mayor Bill Peduto has an extremely cosy relationship with Uber’s CEO Travis Kalanick. The mayor has actively attempted to influence government proceedings on behalf of the ride-sharing giant.

The most eyebrow-raising revelation is that Mayor Peduto was actively in contact with Kalanick when he wrote a letter to the state of Pennsylvania’s Public Utility Commission which had fined Uber for operating without permission. The letter begged for leniency in the case because Uber “is investing hundreds of millions of dollars in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and is poised to invest millions more.”
(Rhett Jones. Emails Reveal Shady Relationship Between Uber CEO And Pittsburgh's Mayor. Gizmodo Australia. October 17, 2016.)

But the AP investigation found that with billions of dollars and 19 percent of America's electricity supply at stake, a cozy relationship prevails between the industry and its regulator, the NRC.

molotov cocktail

Local GOP office struck by molotov cocktail in North Carolina

A local Republican Party office in North Carolina was damaged by fire and someone spray-painted an anti-GOP slogan referring to “Nazi Republicans” on a nearby wall, authorities said Sunday.

A news release from the town of Hillsborough said someone threw a bottle filled with flammable liquid through the window of the Orange County Republican Party headquarters overnight. The substance ignited and damaged furniture and the interior before burning out.
(Local GOP office struck by molotov cocktail in North Carolina. The Washington Post. October 16, 2016.)

果たして、"molotov cocktail"とは、"a bottle filled with flammable liquid"のことであろうと推測がついたのでした。

Donald Trump cast himself in almost messianic terms Thursday in Florida, describing the presidential race as "a struggle for the survival of our nation" and vowing to win the White House despite all the "slings and arrows" being hurled in his direction.
(Maeve Reston. Donald Trump is running out of ways to win. CNN. October 14, 2016.)

slings and arrows

Wells Fargo CEO John Stumpf is retiring with a nest egg that would make any retiree envious.

At $134 million, the 63-year-old's retirement fund will pull in $3.6 million a year if he bases his planning on living to age 100 before investment income or inflation are taken into account.

Having spent 34 years at Wells Fargo, Stumpf is retiring immediately from the CEO position, which he assumed in June 2007.

He leaves under a cloud, a scandal in which employees opened as many as 2 million accounts in the names of customers without their authorization. More than 5,000 Wells Fargo workers were fired, but not Stumpf or other senior management. Stumpf's attempt to explain the debacle before a Senate committee didn't help matters.
(Well Fargo's Stumpf may envy exit pay of other CEOs. USA Today. October 12, 2016.)

nest egg

Merriam-Webster Dictionary

a natural or artificial egg left in a nest especially to induce a hen to continue to lay there

gamification

Have you heard of gamification? It’s not a new trend, and it has been sweeping creative marketing professionals all over the world for several years now. If you’re new to the world of gamification, it’s basically the use of video games and the elements of playing a game with scoring points, competition and rules in an online marketing technique. It’s designed to put more fun into marketing, and it has the ability to develop strong and loyal followers to your product or brand.
(Gamification: Can Video Games Help Market Your Small Business? CBS News. October 7, 2016.)

Merriam-Webster Dictionary

the process of adding games or gamelike elements to something (as a task) so as to encourage participation

Perhaps the biggest example of the use of gamification in marketing now is through the mega-hit app Pokémon Go. It was quickly released as the most popular mobile application of all time, slaughtering all previous records and finding its way onto the cell phones of users ages eight to 80. You can go outside at nearly any time of the day, head to any cultural landmark in your city and find people there, eagerly seeking out the augmented reality Pocket Monsters as they whip the Pokémon balls and try to catch them all.
(ibid.)

ship-jumping

Donald Trump’s campaign manager Kellyanne Conway has blasted ship-jumping GOP lawmakers — strongly hinting some of those turncoats are sexual harassers themselves who have even targeted her for unwanted advances.

Conway’s stunning allegations went largely unnoticed in the media storm following Sunday night’s second presidential debate between her boss and Hillary Clinton.

When MSNBC’s Chris Matthews asked Conway about Trump’s loss of support among congressional Republicans following disclosure of crass comments he made about women in 2005, she said those critics are hypocrites.
(David K. Li. Trump campaign manager accuses turncoat GOPers of sexual harassment. New York Post. October 10, 2016.)

ship-jumping GOP lawmakers

to desert a cause or party especially abruptly

bravado

As growing fury over the graphic tape threatened the future of Mr. Trump’s campaign, interviews with women around the country on Saturday turned up indignation and disgust. Many said it came as no surprise that a wealthy, powerful man — especially one with the bravado that Mr. Trump has consistently shown — would judge women by their looks and describe them as easy sexual targets.
(Women React With Fury to Donald Trump’s Remarks, but Some Offer Support. The Washington Post. October 8, 2016.)

hairy eyeball

hairy eyeball

Cabbies Give Uber the Hairy Eyeball

The popularity of “ride-sharing” companies like Uber and Lyft has grown substantially across the nation in recent years. Users of the services request rides from independently contracted drivers, using smartphone apps that charge their credit card.
(Josh Brokaw. Cabbies Give Uber the Hairy Eyeball. Ithaca. May 4, 2016.)

Everybody yawns. I mean, really, everybody: The reflexive deep, jaw-stretching inhale followed by a pause and a forced exhalation is pretty much ubiquitous in the animal kingdom, at least among creatures with the right anatomy for it.

It's not clear why we yawn (or when our ancestors started the refreshing routine) but many scientists believe the action serves to cool down the brain. Brains use a lot of energy, and they run hot. Inhaling a rush of cool, ambient air chills the blood, and the widening of the jaw sends a nice blast of that breezy blood into the brain.

A new study in Biology Letters could add further support to this popular theory. If bigger yawns produce a greater cooling effect, the study authors hypothesized, then animals with bigger brains — and therefore more brain tissue to cool down — would produce more sustained yawns. Their data suggests that this is indeed the case. Forget the dream of having big brains and brawn; big brains and yawn is much cooler.
(Rachel Feltman. Bigger brains mean longer yawns. The Washington Post. October 5, 2016.)

to open your mouth wide while taking in breath usually because you are tired or bored

Trump not walking the walk on his tax claims

Donald Trump, under fire over his taxes, is casting himself as a champion of the little guy when it comes to rewriting the tax code, but there’s little in his plan that matches his rhetoric.
His promises to stick it to the rich notwithstanding, independent analyses agree the top 1 percent would be the biggest beneficiaries of his plans to cut individual, business and capital gains rates.
(Brian Faler. Trump not walking the walk on his tax claims. Politico. October 4, 2016.)

Trump not walking the walk on his tax claims

plain Jane

LONDON: The secret of seduction could be as simple as standing next to an ugly friend. Researchers have discovered that our judgments of people vary according to the company they keep.

If their companion is a plain Jane or a dull Dave, they seem far more appealing.
(Scientists find the secret of seduction. Independent. October 2, 2016.)

Scientists at Royal Holloway, University of London, asked volunteers to rate pictures of different faces for attractiveness.

They were then asked to assess the same faces placed alongside ones perceived to be on the ugly side. The addition of these "distractor" images led to the original faces seeming more fanciable.

Study author Nicholas Furl said: "We live in a society obsessed with beauty and attractiveness. It’s been understood that a person’s level of attractiveness is generally steady. However, this work demonstrates that the company we keep has an effect on how attractive we appear to others.
(ibid.)

smack

Officials in Kentucky are monitoring a day-care center after an investigation found that staff members forced children to line up for a swat with a ruler before they could have a yogurt — a “game” the workers called “smack for a snack.”

The state Office of Inspector General found that on Aug. 4 two male employees at New Creation Child Care in Lexington required the children, who were school-age, to get a “smack” on their hands or their legs to have their snack.

“The teacher said if you want a yogurt, you have to stand up to get hit on the hand or the leg,” a 10-year-old girl, who said she was hit once on her hand and her leg, told investigators about the incident, according to the state report. “Everyone lined up to get a hit. Some kids were crying about it.”
(Lindsey Bever. ‘Smack for a snack’: A day-care center’s game for hungry children. The Washington Post. October 1, 2016.)
