San Francisco may become the next U.S. city to ban plastic straws. The city's board of supervisors approved the ban on a preliminary basis last week and the final decision is on its agenda Tuesday. That has shops that sell boba, or bubble tea – a drink that has to be sucked through a straw – concerned.

Bubble tea is typically served in a big plastic cup over ice. It has balls of tapioca at the bottom the size of small marbles. You use a wide straw to suck up the tapioca — or boba — from the bottom of the cup.
(Michele Wiley. San Francisco Is Poised To Ban Plastic Straws. That's Got Bubble Tea Shops Worried. NPR. July 30, 2018.)

It has balls of tapioca at the bottom the size of small marbles. You use a wide straw to suck up the tapioca...

pennies from heaven

It's not exactly pennies from heaven, but McDonald’s is planning to make it rain coins to celebrate the Big Mac’s 50th anniversary.

Starting at the lunch rush on Thursday, customers can receive a MacCoin with the purchase of a Big Mac at 14,000 participating restaurants across the United States, McDonald's announced Sunday.

And what's the coin good for? Another Big Mac.
(Ben Tobin. McDonald's unveils MacCoin to celebrate Big Mac's 50th anniversary. USA Today. July 30, 2018.)

jack-of-all-trades

Longtime Trump Organization CFO Allen Weisselberg has been subpoenaed, the Wall Street Journal reports. That should come as little surprise; he was invoked twice in Michael Cohen's taped conversation with President Trump about buying the rights to former Playboy model Karen McDougal's story.

Bloomberg's Timothy O'Brien spotlighted the potential significance of Weisselberg's implication in the whole thing shortly after the Cohen-Trump tape came out Tuesday evening.

In other words, Weisselberg has served as something of a jack-of-all-trades for Trump.
(Aaron Blake. This may be the biggest shoe to drop from the Trump-Michael Cohen tape. The Washington Post. July 26, 2018.)

a jack-of-all-trades

Jack-of-all-trades, (and) masters of none.

vendetta

The Trump administration’s corrosive, norm-busting treatment of the press continued Wednesday as the latest twist in President Trump’s ongoing vendetta with CNN. After serving as the pool reporter—rotating designated reporters that represent all outlets at certain events—for an afternoon meeting between Trump and president of the European Commission Jean-Claude Juncker, the White House informed Collins that should [sic] would not be able to attend an open press availability between the two leaders later that day.
(Elliot Hannon. White House Bars CNN Reporter for “Shouting Questions” During Oval Office Press Event. Slate Magazine. July 25, 2018.)

President Trump’s ongoing vendetta with CNN

After years of being banned, Facebook will now be allowed in China — sort of. The company has obtained a license to open an office in China, which is a major breakthrough considering the social media network is still censored for most residents.

The office will be a $30 million subsidiary called Facebook Technology (Hangzhou), located in the city Hangzhou, which is also the headquarters of Alibaba. Facebook will be running a startup incubator that will make small investments and give advice to local businesses, an anonymous source told Reuters.

The subsidiary is listed as wholly owned by Facebook Hong Kong Limited, according to Reuters, which read the business filing that has since been removed. Facebook does have a sales office in Hong Kong, which isn’t subject to the rules and censorship of the mainland.
(Shannon Liao. Facebook opens a subsidiary in China, a breakthrough for the banned social media platform. The Verge. July 24, 2018.)

The subsidiary is listed as wholly owned by Facebook Hong Kong Limited, according to Reuters, which read the business filing that has since been removed.

Facebook Hong Kong Limited, which read the business filing

suplex

Masanori “Masa” Saito, known as Mr. Saito to a generation of American wrestling fans, passed away at the age of 76 last weekend following a long struggle with Parkinson’s disease. An Olympic freestyle wrestler in 1964, Saito was a legendarily hard man and among the most universally respected people in the wrestling business; his toughness, his skills as a performer even well into middle age, and his long-term success in America made him a legend.

Saito could and gladly would grind opponents into the mat or suplex them out of their boots, and his particularly gnarly back suplex variation eventually being nicknamed “the Saito suplex” within the business.
(David Bixe span. Masa Saito Was A Great Wrestler And Half Of Pro Wrestling's Most Famous Arrest. Deadspin. July 24, 2018.)

suplex

polemicist

We all seem to be worried about the robots taking over these days — and they don’t need to take all the jobs to be horrendously disruptive. A situation where 30 to 40 per cent of the working age population was economically useless would be tough enough. They might be taxi drivers replaced by a self-driving car, hedge fund managers replaced by an algorithm, or financial journalists replaced by a chatbot on Instagram.

Should everyone be given free money? Or should everyone receive the guarantee of a decently-paid job? Various non-profits, polemicists and even Silicon Valley types have thrown their weight behind the “free money” idea in the form of a universal basic income, while US senators including Bernie Sanders, Elizabeth Warren, Cory Booker and Kirsten Gillibrand have been pushing for trials of a jobs guarantee.
(Tim Harford. Would basic incomes or basic jobs be better when robots take over? Financial Times. June 29, 2018.)

polemicist

sarcophagous

When Egyptian archaeologists opened an ancient sarcophagus dating back 2,000 years, they found three skeletons and a lot of red, liquid sewage, the country's antiquities ministry said Thursday.

Discovered earlier this month, the mysterious tomb — believed to be the largest uncovered in Alexandria, according to the antiquities ministry — has sparked international speculation about its contents.
(Ryan W Miller. Archaeologists opened a mysterious Egyptian sarcophagus. Here's what they found. USA Today. July 19, 2018.)

the mysterious tomb

G-string

Police in Columbus, Ohio, released body-camera video showing Stephanie Clifford, the adult film star known as Stormy Daniels who claims to have had an affair with President Donald Trump, being handcuffed and arrested outside a strip club where she performed.

Clifford, 39, was arrested July 11 on suspicion of sexually touching a patron while on stage at the Sirens Gentlemen's Club in Columbus, but the charges were quickly dismissed after City Attorney Zach Klein reviewed the case.

Undercover detectives at the club alleged that while "topless and wearing a G-string," Clifford touched a patron, a female undercover detective, in a "specified anatomical area."
(Bill Hutchinson. Police release body-camera video of Stormy Daniels arrest. ABC News. July 18, 2018.)

G-string

Thai cave rescue: push to give 'VC' to Aussie divers

There are growing calls for Australian cave divers Richard Harris and Craig Challen to be recognised with the civilian equivalent of the Victoria Cross — the Cross of Valour.
(Thai cave rescue: push to give 'VC' to Aussie divers. The Australian. July 12, 2018.)

Victoria Cross

Cross of Valour

SAN FRANCISCO – Amazon suffered a rare glitch at the start of its 36-hour online sales bonanza Monday, turning away would-be shoppers browsing for Prime Day deals with notices that heavy web traffic had caused its site and app to crash.

Instead, the online retail giant, which also owns cloud computing juggernaut Amazon Web Services, showed shoppers a selection of dog photos.
(Elizabeth Weise. On Amazon Prime Day, site and app crash; shoppers left in lurch instead see photos of dogs. USA Today. July 16, 2018.)

spelunker

Then, three days after the rescue operation was completed, CNN posted an interview with a British spelunker who had helped locate the boys. That spelunker, Vernon Unsworth, called Musk's submarine “a PR stunt.”
(Avi Selk. Elon Musk, insisting he helped in Thai cave rescue, calls actual rescuer a ‘pedo.’ The Washington Post. July 15, 2018.)

spelunker

a run for one's money

Amazon may have a run for its money with big-box retail chains Walmart and Target, investor and author Kevin O'Leary told CNBC.

"If you look at behemoth big boxes that are going to survive the next decade against Amazon, I would put Walmart in that basket, along with Target," O'Leary said Tuesday on "Closing Bell." "Because if you look at what they’re doing and the kind of people they’re hiring on their teams and the efforts and the logistics they’re putting in place, they look like survivors to me."

His comments come on the heels of Walmart's announcement Tuesday that its subsidiary Jet.com will open a fulfillment center in the Bronx, as Walmart tests same-day grocery delivery in New York.
(Kellie Ell. Walmart and Target will 'survive' against Amazon, says O'Leary. CNBC. July 10, 2018.)

Amazon may have a run for its money with big-box retail chains Walmart and Target

まず、”a run for one’s money”を辞書で引くと、

challenging competition or opposition

They may win the game, but we’ll give them a good run for their money.

Morse code

Google today announced that it is bringing Morse code as an input method to Gboard for iOS. The company first integrated Morse code into the Android version of Gboard (in beta form) shortly after its I/O 2018 keynote. Alongside the debut on iOS, Google says it has made numerous improvements to the Android experience, too.

When activated, Morse code fills the keyboard area with two large dot and dash icons. As you tap the icons, word suggestions will appear at the top of the on-screen keyboard just as they do when you’re using the QWERTY version.
(Chris Welch. Google’s Gboard keyboard now lets you communicate through Morse code on both Android and iOS. The Verge. July 11, 2018.)

Samuel Finley Breese Morse(1791-1826)

zipline

A honeymoon turned fatal when an Israeli couple collided while ziplining in Honduras.

Newlyweds traveling on Royal Caribbean Cruises' Allure of the Seas crashed into each other on a zipline ashore in Roatan, Honduras, last week. The husband and wife were sent to a local hospital, where the husband died from his injuries, Royal Caribbean Cruises spokesperson Owen Torres told USA TODAY.
(Asley May. Honeymooning couple fatally collides on zipline in Honduras. USA Today. July 10, 2018.)

A transportation system or piece of recreation equipment consisting of a cable stretched between points of different elevations, a pulley, and a harness or bar for attaching a rider, who moves by gravity.
(American Heritage Dictionary)

― straight ballin'

Put away that Rolex, because there's a new conspicuous consumption totem on the block.

A June paper from the National Bureau of Economic Research looking at, in part, common predictors of wealth, found that owning an iPhone is a strong sign that someone is in fact straight ballin'. Or, at least "high-income."

"We measure cultural distance between two groups as the ability to infer an individual's group based on his or her (i) media consumption, (ii) consumer behavior, (iii) time use, or (iv) social attitudes," notes the study abstract.

The paper, by Marianne Bertrand and Emir Kamenica, has some interesting details. For example, while in 1992 using Grey Poupon Dijon was 62.2% indicative of being high income, by 2016 that fanciest of mustards had been replaced by the iPhone.

Specifically, owning an iPhone was 69.1% predictive of being high income.
(Jack Morse. Own an iPhone? New study says you're probably rich. Mashable. July 9, 2018.)

straight ballin'

pipsqueak

With last month's 'summit' in North Korea, all President Donald Trump accomplished was to raise a pipsqueak dictatorship to the presumptive equal of the United States, further diminishing our credibility on the world stage.

Rather than emerging with a detailed agreement for denuclearization on the Korean peninsula, the session with North Korean strongman Kim Jung Un merely produced a smaller, interim agreement and one, long photo-op of a press conference.
(Robert Beard. Trump's N.Korea gambit didn't pay off | Opinion. Pennlive.com. July 5, 2018.)

a pipsqueak dictatorship

― Forever stamp

Forever stamp

When the US Postal Service rolled out its Forever stamps in 2010 featuring a close-up of the Statue of Liberty, it wasn't actually of the iconic symbol of freedom.

Instead, it was the face of the more diminutive replica that stands on the Las Vegas Strip and occasionally gets dolled up in sports jerseys to celebrate events in Sin City. As if the mix-up wasn't embarrassing enough, it's also going to cost the Postal Service.

On Friday, a federal judge ruled that the Postal Service should pay $3.5 million to Robert Davidson, the sculptor of the Las Vegas replica.

US Postal Service

A man is accused of selling an elderly woman a "lemon" car.

Corey Smart was arrested in Noxubee County and charged with exploiting a vulnerable person.

Noxubee County Sheriff Terry Grassaree says Smart sold the woman a 1996 Buick on May 18 for $2,500.
(Man Charged with Selling Elderly Woman "Lemon" car. WTVA. June 13, 2018.)

To most, Lemons are a versatile fruit that works great in Tea, helps freshen the air, and remove the occasional stain. To the auto industry, however, lemons are anything but useful.

A Lemon is a slang term referring to any car that was a piece of junk right off the assembly line. Was it bad parts? Poor engineering? Hasty assembly? It’s hard to pinpoint exactly, but it happens, and it’s expensive.
(Ken Manchester. Is your automobile a lemon -Part 1. Mint Hill Times. June 20, 2018.)

Their new car turned out to be a lemon.

Online Etymology Dictionary

let go

Barnes & Noble

CEO Demos Parneros will not be paid severance and will be removed from the board immediately, the bookstore chain said late Tuesday. Barnes & Noble said the board was advised by a law firm in deciding to fire Parneros.

The company did not announce a reason for the firing. It said only that the CEO was not let go because of any disagreement about "financial reporting, policies or practices or any potential fraud relating thereto."

The company also reaffirmed its profit guidance for the current fiscal year. A spokesperson had no further comment.

let go

scrawny

Stunning video footage shows for the first time the junior soccer team that got lost in a network of caves in Thailand nine days ago and were just found.

The 5-minute video posted on Facebook on Monday by the country’s equivalent of the US Navy SEALs shows the scrawny boys — ages 11 to 16 — in red and blue soccer jerseys sitting on a rocky slope in a dark cave.

“We are coming, it’s OK, many people are coming, we are the first,” a British rescuer tells them, after confirming all 13 members are there.

salvo

Daniel Loeb, the hedge fund mogul known for his aggressive investment stances, intensified pressure on Nestlé on Sunday, calling on the board of the global food giant to split the company into three divisions.

In a letter, Mr. Loeb noted that his hedge fund, Third Point, had invested more than $3 billion in Nestlé, and called on the board to be “bolder” and “faster” in reimagining the company.

The letter was the latest salvo in a battle to reform Nestlé. “This is a call for urgency,” Mr. Loeb wrote, arguing that the company has not moved with enough speed to shed its less profitable divisions. Mr. Loeb has pushed Nestlé before, arguing that it should sell its stake in L’Oréal, the cosmetics maker.
(Jessica Silver-Greenberg. Activist Investor Daniel Loeb Intensifies Pressure on Nestlé to Reorganize. New York Times. July 1, 2018.)

The letter was the latest salvo in a battle to reform Nestlé.
