― whimper

Telescopes saw the giant ball of ice and dust disappear behind the star, but only a dull streamer re-emerge.

Astronomers continued to search for the object, but it eventually became clear that the much vaunted "Comet of the Century" had gone out with a whimper.

Despite its great size, Ison was probably torn apart in the immense heat and tidal forces so close to the Sun.
(Jonathan Amos. Comet Ison destroyed in Sun passage. BBC News. November 28, 2013.)

"Comet of the Centry" had gone out with a whimper

gone out with a whimper

end with a whimper
die with a whimper

start with a bang and end with a whimper

with a bang

Thanksgivukkah

For 30 years, Stuart Kahan has resisted customers’ entreaties to shake up the Hanukkah selection at his Teaneck, New Jersey, delicatessen. Now he has a reason to move beyond potato pancakes: Thanksgivukkah, a mashup of the American and Jewish celebrations.

Owing to an overlap in the Gregorian and Jewish calendars, Hanukkah and Thanksgiving have collided for the first time since at least early last century. Merchants as varied as Amazon.com Inc., Martha Stewart and Teaneck’s Smokey Joe’s kosher barbecue are rising to the occasion with Thanksgivukkah menus, tchotchkes and merchandise.
(Lauren Coleman-Lochner. Thanksgivukkah Spawning Menurkeys in Mashup Celebration. Bloomberg. November 27, 2013.)

For the first time since 1888, the first day of Chanukah falls on Thanksgiving, an event so rare it will not happen again for approximately another 80,000 years.
(MaryAlice Parks. It’s Thanksgivukkah – The National Menorah Is Lit. ABC News. November 27, 2013.)

Boreas

Northeast braces for Boreas; Massive travel delays expected

No airport turkey for these people!

Leo Corteledzi and his family joined a legion of savvy travelers Tuesday, getting a jump on the Thanksgiving getaway just ahead of a winter nor’easter that was set to slam New York Wednesday.
(New York Post. November 26, 2013.)

good Samaritan

OAKLAND, Calif. — Police praised a football fan for saving the life of a woman who jumped from the third-level deck of the Oakland Raiders' home stadium by breaking her fall.

The woman, who was not identified, was critically injured Sunday after plunging about 45 feet at O.co Coliseum. She jumped shortly after the Raiders' 23-19 loss to the Tennessee Titans and as fans were filing out of the stadium.

A good Samaritan who tried to break her fall was seriously injured in the process, but was conscious and is expected to survive, police said.

"He saved her life quite honestly, at his own expense," Alameda County Sheriff's Sgt. J.D. Nelson told the Oakland Tribune. "This guy 100 percent saved her life. She'd be dead now."
(Raiders fan saves life of woman who jumped from upper deck. New York Post. November 25, 2013.)

refusenik

LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- Carol Larkin will not shop on Thanksgiving. Even though she lives directly behind the a Kroger supermarket, she won't even stop for a last-minute item on the way to her family feast Thursday at a sister's house.

"I want to spend the day with my family," said Larkin, 59.

But while Thanksgiving shopping refuseniks like Larkin are vocal in their complaints about the increasing encroachment into the holiday's sanctity, they may be fighting a losing battle, as retailers open early to lure shoppers on tight budgets.
(Jere Downs. Thanksgiving shopping a sacrilege for some. USA Today. November 24, 2013.)

Thanksgiving shopping refuseniks
