China ate your lunch."

President Donald Trump and former Vice President Joe Biden had their first chance to challenge each other face to face. They did – a lot.

Hardly a minute went by in the 90-minute brawl without one of the candidates angrily interrupting the other, whether on the coronavirus pandemic, the Supreme Court, the economy or anything else, including each other’s families.

“Will you shut up, man?” Biden snapped at Trump at one point. “You’re the worst president America has ever had,” he said later.

“China ate your lunch,” Trump shot back at Biden during questions on the economy.

Even the moderator, Fox News’ Chris Wallace, couldn’t always stay above the fray.

“I hate to raise my voice, but why shouldn’t I be different than the two of you?” the exasperated host said at one point.

(The highlights from the vicious first debate between Trump and Biden. CNBC. September 29, 2020.)

"China ate your lunch."

Biden and Trump sparred over their children, with Trump launching a misleading attack on Biden’s son Hunter over his consulting business.

“China ate your lunch, Joe. No wonder, your son goes in and he takes out billions of dollars. takes out billions of dollars to manage. He makes millions of dollars,” Trump said.

“That’s simply not true,” said Biden.

Trump continued with another unfounded claim: “Why is it, just out of curiosity, the mayor of Moscow’s wife gave your son $3.5 million?”

“None of that is true,” Biden said again.

(ibid.)

to deprive of profit, dominance, or success

(Merriam-Webster Dictionary)

mover and shaker

Slowly but surely, the movers and shakers are dribbling back from their Hamptons and Connecticut basements to their office desks. The question is how much longer it will take for the rank-and-file to follow.

The latest two Wall Street companies returning high-level staffers to their Midtown digs are investment- banking advisory firm Evercore and P. Schoenfeld Asset Management (PSAM), Realty Check has learned.

Evercore will begin bringing some of its trading and executive staff back to four floors at 55 E. 52nd St. in early October, with more employees to follow. PSAM has already returned to its offices at 1350 Sixth Ave. Neither firm responded to requests for comment.

(Steve Cuozzo. Wall Street firms’ return-to-work movement gaining steam. New York Post. September 27, 2020.)

You gotta be kidding me.

A new study has revealed some a-meow-zing new purr-spectives on cats and their dietary needs.

New research from animal nutrition specialists at the University of Guelph, in Ontario, Canada, found that cats who are fed one big meal each day may be more satisfied and beg for food less than cats fed multiple smaller meals.

The findings were published in the journal PLOS One Friday.

(James Leggate. You gotta be kitten me: Study says cats are not fed enough times. New York Post. September 24, 2020.)

You gotta be kitten me

は、

You gotta be kidding me.

jimmies

A factory in Vietnam was busted washing and reselling more than 320,000 used condoms to pass them off as new, according to police who raided the dangerous operation.

To “recycle” the dirty rubbers, Pham Thi Thanh Ngoc, 32, allegedly had roughly 1,000 of them delivered per month to the facility in Tan Uyen Town, where she cleaned and reshaped them, according to the Vietnam Insider.

Pham, who rented the facility, remolded the jimmies with a wooden shaft to make them look fresh again — then placed them in new packaging, the local outlet reported.

During the raid on Saturday, local police seized a total of 324,000 used condoms, officials said. Thousands more had already been sold to unsuspecting customers.

(Natalie O'Neill. Vietnamese factory busted recycling hundreds of thousands of used condoms. New York Post. September 23, 2020.)

jimmies

tiny rod-shaped bits of usually chocolate-flavored candy often sprinkled on ice cream

Even Sizzler has lost its sizzle amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

The steakhouse chain known for its grilled meats and giant salad bars filed for bankruptcy Monday after the coronavirus pandemic shuttered its restaurants and strained its finances.

“The filing is a direct result of the financial impact the COVID-19 pandemic has had on the casual dining sector, particularly long-term indoor dining closures and landlords’ refusal to provide necessary rent abatement,” Sizzler said in a statement, according to Restaurant Business News.

Sizzler says it has struggled to bounce back from virus-related lockdowns that forced all of its 14 company-operated restaurants to close at least twice.

(Noah Manskar. Sizzler steakhouse chain files for bankruptcy amid COVID-19. New York Post. September 22, 2020.)

Even Sizzler has lost its sizzle

The appeal of or the excitement generated by a product or service

(American Heritage Dictionary)

Sell the sizzle, not the steak."(ステーキではなく、「シズル」を売れ)という、マーケティングの教科書に出てくる言葉で有名です。
