all over the map

Navigation platforms are all over the map so far on President Donald Trump's push to change the name of Lake Ontario to Lake America.

After Trump's Aug. 27 executive order renaming the body of water between the United States and Canada, some are eyeing platforms like Google Maps and Apple Maps to see how they plan to handle the change.

Trump's order instructs the Department of the Interior and the U.S. Board on Geographic Names to formalize the change to Lake America within 30 days. It comes amid an escalating trade war between the United States and Canada.
(Melina Khan. How maps are handling Lake Ontario to Lake America name change. USA TODAY. August 31, 2026.)

Navigation platforms are all over the map so far …

all over the map"という表現は慣用表現で、混乱しているとか、まとまりが無い、一貫性を欠く、という意味合いで使われます。

all over the map"は多種多様であるというポジティブな意味合いで使われることもありますが、逆に言えば多種多様であるということはまとまりに欠けるとも言えるわけです。

sell out

California Gov. Gavin Newsom on Thursday showed off knee pads that he suggested were for leaders “selling out” to the Trump administration.

Speaking at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, Newsom said the red knee pads were available to buy via a website he had created.

“The last round of knee pads sold out, just as our law firms are selling out. Many American universities are selling out, and yes, many corporate leaders are selling out to this administration,” Newsom said.

“These are available in bulk, too,” he said, holding up one of the knee pads, which showed U.S. President Donald Trump’s signature.
(Lucy Handley. Newsom shows off knee pads for CEOs ‘selling out’ to the Trump administration. CNBC. January 22, 2026.)

for leaders “selling out” to the Trump administration

The last round of knee pads sold out, just as our law firms are selling out. Many American universities are selling out, and yes, many corporate leaders are selling out to this administration

This isn’t the first time Newsom has brought out the kneepads. During a December talk between Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and Turning Point USA CEO Erika Kirk at the New York Times DealBook Summit, Newsom told the audience to check out the kneepads he was selling to the people “groveling to Trump’s needs.”
(Anabel Sosa. Gavin Newsom promotes MAGA red kneepads at Switzerland conference. SFGATE. Jan 22, 2026.)

schmear

NYC bagel dynasty with $50M sales schmeared by biz partner betrayal: lawsuit

A Queens-based empire that peddles 100 million bagels a year is being torn asunder by a succession fight between the children of founders George Menegatos and Nicholas Evangelinos.

The bond between the families behind New Yorker Wholesale Bagels — once thicker than cream cheese — is now toast after Nicholas’ son Stefanos allegedly cut George’s kids out of the business, denying them their father’s company shares after his death, they said in a $25 million Brooklyn Federal Court lawsuit.
(Kathianne Boniello. NYC bagel dynasty with $50M sales schmeared by biz partner betrayal: lawsuit. New York Post. January 10, 2026.)

trash

He was trashed!

A “very intoxicated” raccoon went on a drunken rampage inside a Virginia liquor store — then passed out face-first in the bathroom, local officials said.

The masked bandit was found snoozing in a booze-induced haze by the toilet Saturday morning after trashing the Ashland ABC Store, leaving behind a trail of broken liquor bottles, disheveled shelves, and toppled boxes, according to the Hanover County Animal Protection and Shelter.
(Anna Young. ‘Very intoxicated’ raccoon trashes Virginia liquor store, then passes out face-first in bathroom. New York Post. December 2, 2025.)

Drunk or intoxicated.
Extremely tired; exhausted.
(American Heritage Dictionary)

a lot of hay

That’s a lot of hay!

The animal rights group NYCLASS has spent millions of dollars over the past decade as part of its campaign to ban horse carriages in New York City, according to records reviewed by The Post.
(Carl Campanile. Animal rights group NYCLASS spends millions to ban horse carriages in Big Apple. October 20, 2025.)

That ain’t hay.

side

McDonald’s employees outside the U.S. are serving burgers and fries — with a side of fashion.

Fans of the fast-food chain are craving more than just the value menu after a customer shared a video of unexpectedly stylish “McJeans” that European workers wear.

The TikTok clip — racking up over 8.1 million views — features two workers casually covering their shifts in the perfectly fitted blue jeans, each stamped with a subtle McDonald’s “M” logo on the back-right pocket.
(Adriana Diaz. McDonald’s fans freak out over sexy ‘McJeans’ that workers wear in lucky countries: ‘She’s serving and then serving’. New York Post. September 16, 2025.)

McDonald’s employees outside the U.S. are serving burgers and fries — with a side of fashion.

a side of fries

The apple doesn't fall far from the tree.

Apple's 'Awe Droppings' fall close to the tree

Apple on Tuesday showed off its iPhone 17 lineup at a media event dubbed, "Awe Dropping," favoring timeworn self-adulation over a more literal pun like "Four Play."

The Cupertino-based computer biz announced four iPhone models – iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Pro, iPhone 17 Pro Max, and iPhone 17 Air.

CEO Tim Cook lauded iPhone 17 Air, the newest member of the iPhone family, with the usual superlatives. "With the advancements made possible by Apple Silicon, we've been able to push the limits of iPhone design and innovation," he said. "And that breakthrough has led to something truly amazing."
(Thomas Calburn. Apple's 'Awe Droppings' fall close to the tree. The Register. September 9, 2025.)

よくよく調べてみると、"fall close to the tree"というのは、

The apple doesn't fall far from the tree.

The apple never falls far from the tree."

a child usually has a similar character or similar qualities to his or her parents

fish tale

People are getting catfished — literally.

Experts warn that when it comes to sushi, what you sea is often not what you get — with the US clocking in as one of the world’s biggest fish forgers.

Studies have shown that cheaper fish alternatives are being mislabeled and masqueraded as salmon, tuna, snapper and other top-shelf raw seafood — with the cost-cutting counterfeits almost impossible to spot after the sushi’s been sliced and served.
(Ben Cost. ‘Fake’ sushi is taking over and can make you sick, experts say — here’s how to tell real from bogus. New York Post. March 17, 2025.)

How do you spot a so-called fish tale?

Dr. Cusa advised, “In general, fish products that are sold in supermarket chains and that have thorough labels indicating the species, catch location and catching gear, are also good choices.”

“On the other hand, processed products, canned products with little information if any are, almost by definition, mislabeled,” she added.
(ibid.)

can

Three men snatched an 18-carat-gold toilet worth $3.5 million from an English country mansion where Winston Churchill was born — and now they could be headed to the can, authorities say.

The one-of-a-kind, 215-pound, fully functioning commode was carried out of Blenheim Palace by the thieves in under 5 minutes in the predawn hours of Sept. 14, 2019, prosecutor Julian Christopher told a jury during his opening statement in Oxford Crown Court on Monday.
(Chris Nesi. Seat of power: Three men on trial for swiping $3.5M gold toilet from Churchill’s home. February 24, 2025.)

and now they could be headed to the can

fling

The chance at rekindling this romance flamed out quickly.

A Florida Chipotle worker was arrested Tuesday after he allegedly used a tracking device from Best Buy to keep tabs on an ex-fling from years ago in hopes he could “run into” her, according to authorities.

The defendant fessed up to buying the tracker and installing it on his former flame’s car in front of her home “in an attempt to ‘run into’ the victim,” the affidavit states.
(David Propper. Florida Chipotle worker installed tracking device on ex-fling’s car in hopes he would ‘run into’ her: complaint. New York Post. January 16, 2025.)

ex-fling

American Heritage Dictionaryでは、

A brief, casual sexual or romantic relationship

The chance at rekindling this romance flamed out quickly.

They’re wining about Joe!

A New York City liquor store that recently opened just blocks away from the now-shuttered Trader Joe’s Wine Shop is cashing in on the intellectual property of the grocery chain and confusing customers, the retail behemoth claimed in a new lawsuit.

Trader Joe’s blasted Joe’s Wine Co. for not only sharing a similar name but copying the aesthetic of the beloved former wine store in Union Square, which closed two years ago after workers tried to unionize, according to court papers.
(Anna Young. Trader Joe’s in legal tiff with NYC wine shop over the name ‘Joe’. December 1, 2024.)

They’re wining about Joe!

whine

An apple a day keeps doctor away.

An apple a day keeps the doctor away.

An Apple Watch a day keeps the doctor away.

Some users are astounded by their device’s ability to flag early signs of sickness before an ailment like COVID or a cold arises after the iOS 11 software update rolled out last month.

The startlingly accurate health assessment from the Apple Watch’s Vitals app — available on the Series 8 model and above — harnesses critical metrics taken over a week while a user is asleep, according to Mac Rumors.
(Alex Mitchell. Apple Watch Vitals app predicts colds, flu, COVID days before they hit, users claim. New York Post. October 15, 2024.)

An Apple Watch a day keeps the doctor away.

(An apple a day keeps the doctor away.)、という諺はイギリスのウェールズ地方で言われはじめたそうなのですが、その由来を辿ると、

Eat an apple on going to bed, And you’ll keep the doctor from earning his bread.

An apple a day keeps the doctor away."

belly-flop

Mayor Eric Adams declared Thursday that 50 public swimming pools are open for the summer, although city officials later clarified the sites will continue to face partial closures because of an ongoing lifeguard shortage — and there was a temporary shutdown hours later at the very pool where Hizzoner made his splashy announcement.

Whole sections of the newly renovated Astoria Pool were closed just hours after Adams left it, leaving a long line of people waiting outside.
(NYC pool season opens with belly-flop as lifeguard shortage prompts partial closures. New York Post. June 27, 2024.)

Closures at the city’s public pools have thrown a wet blanket over many New Yorkers’ plans in recent summers, in large part because of a lifeguard shortage. Since 2022, the city has been able to recruit far fewer than the roughly 1,000 lifeguards needed, officials have said.

The city’s efforts to hire enough lifeguards for this season belly-flopped, too, with officials Thursday quietly admitting public New York City pools will suffer rolling partial closures yet again thanks to fewer staffers.
(ibid.)

a complete and often painful or embarrassing failure
(Merriam-Webster Dictionary)

con

Trump, Biden said, “came here with your senator, Ron Johnson, literally holding a golden shovel, promising to build the eighth wonder of the world.”

“Are you kidding me? Look what happened. They dug a hole with those golden shovels, and then they fell into it,” the president said.

“Foxconn turned out to be just that - a con,” Biden added. “Go figure.”
(Kayla Tausche. Biden touts economic achievements in Wisconsin amid persistent concerns on inflation. CNN. May 8, 2024.)

Foxconn turned out to be just that - a con

put on paws

Their travel plans were put on paws.

Perplexed dog owners are scratching their heads as to why and how their cute, and often well-behaved, companions got banned from air travel.
(Alex Mitchell. My dog wasn’t allowed to board my flight — I’m convinced there’s a no-fly list for pets. New York Post. February 13, 2024.)

Their travel plans were put on paws.

White Rock dog owners are running out of time to take their furry friends to the waterfront.

The city’s program that allows dogs on the White Rock promenade during off-peak months is set to change Thursday (March 31), and dogs will not be allowed on the walkway again until Oct. 1.
(Nick Greenizan. Pups’ promenade passage to be put on ‘paws’ after Thursday. Peace Arch News. March 27, 2022.)

A MOTORBIKE-RIDING pooch who has helped to raise hundreds of pounds for good causes is back in the saddle.

Adorable Jack Russell Cookie and her owner Dave Hall have won an army of fans for their amazing exploits while travelling the length and breadth of Britain on their BMW R1250.

Sadly, their charity work had to be put on ‘paws’ for 18 months after Dave was struck down by a bout of ill health.
(Amanda Keenan. Motorbike-riding dog back in the saddle after 18-month ‘paws’. Glasgow Evening Times. April 15, 2023.)

They were put on “paws” during COVID-19 lockdowns, but the loveable Labradors of the Canine Court Companion Program (CCCP) are back on deck at Gosford courthouse, along with several others in the state.
(Therapy dogs back on deck at Gosford courthouse. coastcommunitynews.com.au. April 23, 2022.)

in a froth

Guinness fans are in a froth over incendiary claims the double pour does not make the perfect pint and is just a 'marketing ploy'.

Pouring two-thirds of the pint and leaving it to rest for 60 to 80 seconds has become regular practice for any barman worth their salt - with Guinness insisting it is necessary to achieve the 'perfect head height' and 'balanced flavour profile'.

As the company itself says: 'Good things come to those who wait.'

But now an Irish barman based in the UK has ignited an almighty row by insisting the double pour is simply a marketing ploy and does not affect the stout's quality or taste.
(Rory Tingle. Guinness fans are in a froth over claims the double pour does NOT make the perfect pint: Stout aficionados rubbish Irish bartender's revelation that 60 second resting time is just a 'marketing ploy'. Daily Mail. February 13, 2024.)

Guinness fans are in a froth (over)

froth at the mouth

cross on one’s back

(Bob) Iger recently went public with his decision to pull ads from Musk’s X (formerly known as Twitter) social media platform, joining others in the progressive CEO class attacking someone the left hates as much as Donald Trump.

The overarching goal of the progressive movement, if you haven’t noticed, is destroying the platform Musk is trying to remake from the lefty safe space it had been for far too long to a free-speech mecca.

No more silencing of conservative voices, no more taking orders from the lefties in the Biden administration.

With that, Musk, despite being the world’s richest man, had a big “X” on his back.
(Charles Gasparino. Elon Musk has a big X on his back as Bob Iger pulls ads from platform. New York Post. December 2, 2023.)

Musk… had a big “X” on his back

bear [take up] one’s cross
a cross to bear

If you ask people what they think of when they hear “X,” you will likely get a host of answers:

A lost love.

For a whole lot of people, the latter best describes how they are feeling about Twitter, the live social conversation app. It once was an inviting place, a place of stimulation and information. But lately it had become far less comfortable to hang out there, thanks to an erratic personality, overbearing demands and increasing levels of ugly hate speech. It was barely recognizable anymore.

So now, for many, it’s just another… “ex.”
(Bill Carter. Opinion: Musk could now be in charge of a complete brand blowout for Twitter. CNN. July 25, 2023.)

A former spouse or partner.
(American Heritage Dictionary)

sew up last stitches

Hayley Jones, director of social at PR and digital agency the PHA Group, told MailOnline that the launch of Threads could 'sew up the final stitches in Twitter's demise.'

She said: 'Already, the app has surpassed 10 million sign-ups within hours of launch. The app is connected to users' Instagram accounts and can port all the information from their existing profile onto their Threads profile. This ease of use will pay dividends when battling Twitter for user share.

'The launch of Threads has been timed perfectly with the ongoing turbulence at Twitter HQ this week around viewing limits and begs the question – could this be the decline of legacy social platforms?
(Threads could 'sew up the final stitches in Twitter's demise'. The Daily Mail. July 6, 2023.)

the launch of Threads could 'sew up the final stitches in Twitter's demise.'

sew up(縫う)
stitch(一針、一縫い)

tall order

Asking customers to like this new blend might be a tall order.

Starbucks is rolling out its Oleato line — coffee infused with extra virgin olive oil — but the slick concoctions are prompting café lovers to do a spit take.
(Brooke Kato.Starbucks’ new oil-infused coffee panned: ‘Is this a joke?’ New York Post. April 5, 2023.)
