昨日は父の日（Father's Day）でした。父親への感謝を伝える1日でしたでしょうか。

小生は娘から向日葵の花一輪をもらいました（笑）

陸上短距離の金メダリストのウサイン・ボルトさんはこの日、交際中の女性との間に双子が産まれたことを公表しました。

日本の父親の地位は昔と比較して低下した（！？）などと言われて久しいですが、父の日はやはり一家の大黒柱であることを再確認する日でしょう。

英語では、

the rock of  the family

という表現があるようですが、知りませんでした。

固い岩は強固な基盤（foundation）、また支え（support）という意味合いで用いられることによるもののようです。

ところで、柱は英語で、pillarと言いますね。

the pillar of the family

という表現もあるにはあるようです。
