go-to

It's safe to say that Twitter has a bit of an image problem when it comes to diversity -- and a recent hire to address those problems seems to be backfiring on the firm.

In recent months, the company has become a go-to example of the lack of diversity in the technology industry. Sixty percent of the company's employees are white; that jumps to 72 percent when looking at leadership roles. Overall, fewer than 2 percent of Twitter's employees are black, and none are in leadership roles. While it's true that many major tech companies have similar diversity statistics, but Twitter's numbers stand out because so many of its users are black.
(Hayley Tsukayama. Twitter faces backlash over its new diversity leadSearch. The Washington Post. December 30, 2015.)

go-to example

That perception was fed by a couple of factors: Vice President Joe Biden's keen interest and close involvement in foreign affairs - Obama made Mr. Biden his go-to guy on Iraq - and the high-powered special envoys Obama named.
(Christian Science Monitor. 2010.)

We have a lot of writing and publishing talent in our ranks, and we are meaning to be a go-to resource where you can learn the basics about nuclear power and you can get in touch via directories and links with people in your town, " she said.
(Washington Post. 2010.)

Merriam-Websterでは、

relied on for expert knowledge or skill

Christmas with the Obamas: POTUS and FLOTUS' favorite holiday songs on Spotify

President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama are continuing to get into the Christmas spirit.

The couple released a playlist — titled "Holidays with the Obamas" — of their favorite holiday jams on Spotify on Wednesday.
(Saba Hamedy. Christmas with the Obamas: POTUS and FLOTUS' favorite holiday songs on Spotify. Mashable. December 23, 2015.)

President Of The United States

First Lady Of The United States

keep one's nose to the grindstone

"keep one's nose to the grindstone"という成句をご存知でしょうか?

Enjoy your life. Sometimes, you must put your nose to the grindstone and hustle, but you must also know when you can afford to enjoy your life. After all, you can’t take everything to the grave with you.
(Brearin Land. 7 Personal Finance Lessons From Bruce Lee. Money. December 21, 2015.)

LAST minute shoppers across the region have been treated to the biggest pre-Christmas discounts in years as high street shops slashed prices in an attempt to coax consumers down the aisles.

The North-East’s prime shopping centres, towns and cities have been thronging with shoppers, and Darlington town centre trader Beryl Hankin of the Guru boutique said her “nose was to the grindstone” all weekend.
(Alexa Copeland. Retailers offer huge discounts as shoppers flocked to high streets for 'Panic Saturday.' The Northern Echo. December 21, 2015.)

Precision weight loss based on genetics may be future of dieting

AUSTIN, Texas, Dec. 25 (UPI) -- Scientists at the University of Texas predict in a new study that within five years doctors will design diets based on individual patients' genes.

The potential that several genes are involved with weight gain, loss, and regain also poses a challenge, they said. While a gene has been found that causes energy from food to be stored as fat instead of burned for energy, variations in the gene and how it interacts with other genes can vary from person to person.
(Stephen Feller. Precision weight loss based on genetics may be future of dieting. UPI.com. December 25, 2015.)

― Boxing Day

New Zealanders are expected to hit the shops in hordes as retailers slash their prices in the annual tradition of the Boxing Day sales.

Some stores with online shopping facilities even started their sales a day early to get a jump on the masses.

Walking up Queen St today, almost every retail store had banners in their windows promoting their discounts - the posters put up Christmas Eve night in preparation for the swarms of shoppers on Boxing Day.
(Amelia Wade. Boxing Day bargains: Where to go for the best deals. New Zealand Herald. December 25, 2015.)

turtle

Tiny turtles, a staple of many school science labs and an appealing family pet for people allergic to cats and dogs, may also be responsible for a growing number of salmonellosis outbreaks, a U.S. study suggests.

Sales of turtles with shells less than 4 inches long have been banned in the U.S. since the 1970s because the creatures are known carriers of Salmonella bacteria, which can cause fever, abdominal cramps and diarrhea so severe that some patients need hospitalization. Young children, the elderly and other people with compromised immune systems are particularly vulnerable to serious complications from these infections.
(Turtles kept in many schools and homes again tied to Salmonella. Fox News. December 23, 2015.)

turtle

tortoise

Law enforcement and public health authorities have said that attempts to curb the illicit use of prescription opioids may have fueled increased use of heroin, which is generally cheaper and widely available on the street. Some even believe that drug cartels have taken advantage of government efforts to crack down on "pill mills" — which dispense prescription narcotics with few controls — by flooding the eastern United States with heroin.
(Lenny Bernstein. Florida pill mill crackdown also may have curbed heroin deaths, researchers find. The Washington Post. December 21, 2015.)

schlong

schlong

です。

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -- Donald Trump launched an aggressive attack on Hillary Clinton on Monday night, saying she was "disgusting" for using the restroom during the latest Democratic debate and that she was "schlonged" by a male political opponent.
(Jenna Johnson. Donald Trump calls Hillary Clinton ‘disgusting’ for using the restroom during a debate. The Washington Post. December 21, 2015.)

Later in the night, Trump told the crowd that he could not picture Clinton as president because she never wins at anything. He then brought up the 2008 Democratic primary, which Clinton lost to Barack Obama.

"She was favored to win, and she got schlonged," Trump said, turning a vulgar noun for a large penis into a verb.
(ibid.)

bite the bullet

One of my friends suggested I try this crazy workout called Fitwall taught by this crazy guy named Peter (a.k.a. the Iron Yogi!). So I bit the bullet and went to class.
(Nicole DeBoom. Cross-Training Part II: Metabolic Training. Runner's World. September 23, 2015.)

Collins Cobuild Dictionary of Idioms

If you bite the bullet, you accept a difficult or unpleasant situation.

curdle

bloodcurdling

The term "bloodcurdling" has been around since at least the early 19th century, used to refer to something that induces fear. Of course, no one ever actually thought your blood could curdle or coagulate from fear, but it seems there's at least a grain of truth in the term after all.

According to research conducted by a team at the Leiden University Medical Centre in the Netherlands and published earlier this week, watching horror films does actually cause an increase in a particular blood coagulant factor responsible for blood clotting.
(Michelle Starr. Can scary films literally curdle your blood? CNET. December 18, 2015.)

絶体絶命 ― on the ropes

The one-time leading internet giant is on the ropes. A few of its missteps provide some good advice for leaders to avoid their own errors.

Depending on how you look at it, it’s been a rough week, rough few years, or rough decade for Yahoo. The latest first: Last week the internet company’s board pushed back against its CEO, Marissa Mayer, who wanted to spin off its stake in the Chinese internet firm Alibaba. Now the company is facing the likelihood of selling off its core business of search, news, and community.
(Mark Athitakis. Four Lessons From the Turmoil at Yahoo. Associations Now. December 14, 2015.)

on the ropes

ところで、"on the ropes"の反対は、"off the ropes"となるようです。

Stagaard pulls Parkland basketball off ropes, into driver's seat in about 15 seconds

Parkland High School’s girls basketball team was on the ropes then, suddenly, it was in the driver’s seat on Monday night.

The Trojans can, in large part, thank Sarah Stagaard for their dramatic change of scenery.

The senior guard scored five points within a matter of seconds to power Parkland’s comeback in a 53-49 victory over Northampton during Eastern Pennsylvania Conference Skyline Division play at Pete Schneider Gymnasium.
(Kyle Craig. Stagaard pulls Parkland basketball off ropes, into driver's seat in about 15 seconds. Lehighvalley.com. December 14, 2015.)

Load an online shopping cart with gifts in the correct colors and sizes. Plug in the credit card number and shipping address. Then, watch in horror as the screen freezes, the browser crashes and the cart is empty once again.

The common holiday mishap now is under scientific scrutiny. It's the subject of Brigham Young University research pinpointing when and where online shoppers' blood begins to boil.

As Web users become more flustered or upset, their computer mouse flits about, and it takes longer to navigate a page, found the study published online this month in the academic journal MIS Quarterly.
(Annie Knox. BYU research aims to pinpoint rage-inducing spots on websites. The Salt Lake Tribune. December 16, 2015.)

fluster(ed)

frustrate(d)

"Pay It Forward" ― pay it forward

'Merry Christmas' prompted hundreds to pay it forward at McDonald’s drive-thru

A McDonald’s customer in Florida wanted to pay it forward at the drive-thru window with a "Merry Christmas," not "Happy Holidays."

McDonald’s cashier Marisabel Figueroa Lopez was working the drive-thru window last Wednesday when she says a woman drove up and told the employee that she wanted to pay for the car behind her.

“She gave me her card, and she said I would like for you to tell her [the customer in the car behind her] a message. And I was like ‘Okay.’ She said I want you to tell her to have a ‘Merry Christmas’,” Lopez told Fox 13.
('Merry Christmas' prompted hundreds to pay it forward at McDonald’s drive-thru. Fox News. December 14, 2015.)

The world of text-based messaging is no place for proper punctuation, according to a newly released American study — unless, of course, you want to be seen as a jerk.

Researchers from the department of psychology at New York's Binghamton University recently conducted a series of experiments with undergraduate students to explore the role of the period in text messages.

Participants were asked to read 16 different conversations in the form of either texts or handwritten notes. Every exchange included an invitation question (e.g., "Dave gave me his extra tickets. Wanna come?) and an affirmative, one-word response (Sure, Yup, OK, etc.).

After asking the students to rate how "sincere" each reply sounded, researchers noticed a stark contrast in perception between the replies that had a period at the end of them and those that didn't, despite the messages being otherwise identical.

And no, respondents who used periods weren't perceived as being smarter than the others for using proper punctuation.

"Texts that ended with a period were rated as less sincere than those that did not," reads the abstract of the study, which was published last month in the journal Computers in Human Behavior.
(Lauren O'Neil. Ending a text message with a period makes you seem like a jerk, study shows. CBC News. December 10, 2015.)

― gavel

PARIS — The proposed accord was just hours from a final vote when the glitch was spotted. Someone had changed a single word in the draft text — from a “should” to a “shall” — and suddenly the entire climate deal appeared at risk of faltering.

Secretary of State John F. Kerry phoned his old friend, French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius, in exasperation over a tiny revision that implied huge new legal and financial obligations.

“We cannot do this,” Kerry warned.

Less than four hours later, the accord was approved with the bang of a gavel. A bit of diplomatic finesse had excised the troublesome word and helped clinch a historic agreement.
(Joby Warrick. Anatomy of a deal: How the climate accord was won — and nearly lost. The Washington Post. December 13, 2015.)

― sink one's teeth into

JERUSALEM – Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s recently adopted dog Kaiya has sunk her teeth into her new position, biting two visitors at an event on Wednesday, including the husband of the deputy foreign minister.

At a candle-lighting ceremony to mark the Jewish festival of Hannukah, the 10-year-old mixed breed also took a snip at a member of parliament from Netanyahu’s Likud party.

Knesset Member Sharren Haskel, a veterinary nurse, dismissed the incident, telling Army Radio it was “trivial”.
(Benjamin Netanyahu’s dog keeps biting people. New York Post. December 10, 2015.)

さて、"sunk her teeth into her new position"という表現が出てきますね。

"sink one's teeth into"というのは成句の表現で、Collins Cobuild Dictionary of Idiomsの定義では下記のようになっています。

If you get your teeth into something or sink your teeth into it, you become deeply involved with it and do it with a lot of energy and enthusiasm.

pass the hat

As U.S. and Europe Pass the Hat at Climate Talks, China Clings to Developing-Nation Status

PARIS — Last week, China was trumpeting its arrival as one of the world’s great economic powers, as the International Monetary Fund elevated the renminbi to the ranks of leading currencies, alongside the dollar, euro, yen and British pound.

This week, China is crying poverty.

A crucial issue at the climate negotiations now taking place in Le Bourget, a northeast suburb of Paris, lies in who will foot the bill for $100 billion a year in long-promised assistance for developing countries, starting in 2020.

Europe and the United States, still feeling the effects of the global financial crisis of 2008 and 2009, have been trying to pass the hat for contributions from increasingly affluent middle-income countries, particularly China.

China has considered itself a developing country for purposes of climate negotiations for more than 20 years. And it is sticking to that position, even as locking in sources for the $100 billion annually for poorer countries is one of the biggest remaining hurdles for the talks, which are scheduled to end Friday.
(As U.S. and Europe Pass the Hat at Climate Talks, China Clings to Developing-Nation Status. New York Times. December 9, 2015.)

pass the hat

The Black Friday and Cyber Monday retail brownouts on the web point to the importance -- and the difficulty -- of ensuring that a retailer has enough capacity to handle peak traffic loads.

Target was insistent Monday that its site hadn't crashed, but rather that the retailer had resorted to a tactical metering of traffic that allowed customers to "stay in line" to complete their shopping expedition.

"As we experience spikes in traffic, our systems place guests in a queue and prompt them to access the site later," a Target spokesperson said in a statement. "We apoligize to guests who experience any delays, we appreciate their patience, and encourage them to try again in a few minutes by refreshing their browser."
(Daphne Howland. Target: Our site didn't crash on Cyber Monday. Retail Dive. December 1, 2015.)

to supply in a measured or regulated amount

bait-and-switch

Another Kabukicho hooker arrested in bait-and-switch scam

TOKYO (TR) – As a part of a crackdown on bait-and-switch prostitution scams taking place in the Kabukicho red-light district, Tokyo Metropolitan Police have arrested a 27-year-old woman for extorting a potential customer, reports TV Asahi (Nov. 13).

In September, Miho Sasaki allegedly threatened a male office worker in his 20s into paying a “cancellation fee” of 55,000 yen.

Just prior to the incident, a street tout had lured the victim by handing him a photo of a prostitute who was available at a nearby rental accommodation.

At the accommodation, the suspect, who was not the same person depicted in the picture, told the victim that the price to receive a sex service was 60,000 yen. She also informed the victim that he could cancel the arrangement for 55,000 yen.
(Another Kabukicho hooker arrested in bait-and-switch scam. The Tokyo Reporter. November 14, 2015.)

Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul accused President Obama of pulling a "bait and switch" on Americans by trying to refocus conversations about the recent terror attacks in San Bernardino, Calif., to gun control.

"From the very beginning, the president's been trying to do a bait and switch on the American people. He wants to make this about his liberal agenda, which is gun control and not about terrorism," the Republican presidential hopeful told Newsmax TV's Ed Berliner in an interview set to air Monday evening at 9 p.m. ET.
(Gabby Morrongiello. Paul: Obama's trying to pull a 'bait and switch' by focusing on gun control. Washington Examiner. December 7, 2015.)

Ohio city's bait-and-switch tax hike roils taxpayers

Central Ohio voters who approved a recent tax hike for “vital repairs” to local infrastructure are furious with city officials pushing an expensive park project.

Several members of the City Council in Upper Arlington, a wealthy suburb of Columbus, will face recall elections this winter if activists from a group calling itself Save Northam Park succeed in an ongoing petition drive.

Proposed Northam Park renovations — cutting down more than 100 mature trees and relocating baseball diamonds and tennis courts to make room for a promenade, indoor recreation center and outdoor event space — would cost at least $14 million.
(Jason Hart. Ohio city's bait-and-switch tax hike roils taxpayers. Highland County Press. December 8, 2015.)

willy

A MUM lets her little boy live as a girl after he tried to cut off his willy aged three in a horrifying bid to change sex.

Kerry McFadyen revealed she just managed to stop Daniel mutilating himself with a pair of scissors in the bath.

After taking advice from gender experts, her son now dresses as a girl, has long hair and is known as Danni.

Kerry, 32, from Strathspey, told of the terrible moment she realised how much pain Daniel, now six, was in.

She said: “He was in the bath. Somehow he’d managed to find a pair of scissors.

“When I turned round he was holding them above his bits. I tried to be calm and asked what he was doing.

“He told me he was about to cut off his willy so he could be a girl.
(Mum lets son, 6, live as girl after he tried to cut off willy. The Sun. December 7, 2015.)

Sharing Netflix accounts with family and friends is a pretty common practice. However, according to an article published today on BGR, your friend’s sister’s boyfriend may not be the only person bumming off of your account. A new product has recently made its way onto the illegal side of the Web: lifetime access to Netflix accounts via your hacked Netflix account.

Hackers have been taking advantage of the password-sharing nature of the service to sell Netflix passwords on the dark Web. According to a Business Insider report, online marketplaces that can only be accessed by using an IP-address-hiding Internet browser have been selling access to subscription services such as Netflix and Spotify for as low as $0.50. There have also been reports of hackers selling lifetime access to HBO Now and HBO Go for around $10.
(Kayla Cobb. HOW TO FIND OUT IF YOUR NETFLIX HAS BEEN HACKED. Decider. December 2, 2015.)

your friend’s sister’s boyfriend may not be the only person bumming off of your account

― chicken little

Is your favorite banana really going extinct?

Some experts say yes, but critics retort that rumors of a 'bananapocalypse' are a 'chicken little' hypothesis that's been circulating for years to no effect.

A lethal fungus that has been threatening banana crops in Asia is now spreading to the rest of the world, and has some scientists warning of the popular fruit's extinction.
(Husna Haq. Is your favorite banana really going extinct? The Christian Science Monitor. December 2, 2015.)

Holiday lights are meant to add some cheer to your day, but a British regulator has pointed out that they may have an unwanted side effect: interference with your WiFi network.

On Tuesday, Ofcom -- an agency similar to the Federal Communications Commission -- named holiday lights as one of many electronic devices that can trip up your Internet connection. The agency has released a new app to check for interference that, alas, is only available in Britain.
(Hayley Tsukayama. Are your holiday lights killing your WiFi? The Washington Post. December 1, 2015.)

trip on a stone/a step

― associate

読者の皆さんは、MDがMedical Doctor(医学博士)、MSがMaster of Science(サイエンス系学部の修士)、MBAがMaster of Business Administration(経営学修士)、をそれぞれ指すということはご存知でしょう。

Although this generation of students is often taught that a four-year degree is the gold standard for career success, for many lucrative and stable jobs, the path happens to be just two years long. In other words, there are some professions — especially in the high-demand healthcare and technology sectors — for which an associate degree is your ticket in.

If you’re hoping to get a jump start into the working world, or change careers without having to pursue a full-fledged bachelor’s degree, here are some excellent, in-demand two-year degree jobs to consider:
(6 lucrative jobs you can get with an associate degree. USA Today. November 30, 2015.)

Merriam-Webster Dictionary

having secondary or subordinate status

cute as a button

Princess Charlotte Looks Cute as a Button in New Royal Baby Pic Taken by Kate

To thank their fans, Will and Kate release a portrait of their new daughter.

And the photos released today of Princess Charlotte petting a toy dog follow in that long and venerable tradition. She's barely an inch of hair on her head, but not a hair of it is out of place.
(Tom Sykes. Princess Charlotte Looks Cute as a Button in New Royal Baby Pic Taken by Kate. The Daily Beast. November 29, 2015.)

cute as a button

Healthy diets may not be one-size-fits-all

(Reuters Health) - When two people follow the same weight-loss diet to the letter, but one fails to lose weight, the problem might be their bodies’ different responses to the same foods, a recent Israeli study suggests.

That’s because when two people eat the same meal, one may experience a spike in blood sugar levels when the other person doesn’t, the study found. Over time, elevated blood sugar can lead to health problems like obesity and diabetes.
(Lisa Rapaport. Healthy diets may not be one-size-fits-all. Reuters. November 26, 2015.)

one-size-fits-all approach

one-size-fits-all solution

But rather than using a one-size-fits-all approach, Coca-Cola has tailored advertising, promotions and other marketing efforts for specific areas.

The Australian man who claimed his name was 'Phuc Dat Bich' has admitted it was a hoax.

After outing himself in a rant on his Facebook page under his now infamous nom de plume, the man has spoken with Fairfax Media, saying now that he has been exposed he wants everyone to laugh with him.

The 23-year-old triggered an outpouring of support after he claimed Facebook had repeatedly shut down his page because the social media site believed his name was fake.

The jokester, who claimed in his latest Facebook post that his name was 'Joe Carr', posted a long missive to his Facebook page on Wednesday congratulating himself of hood-winking the world media with the absurd name that he says started out as a joke between friends.
('Phuc Dat Bich' faked it: the man with awkward name turns out to be a hoax. The Syndey Morning Herald. November 25, 2015.)

vestibule

On this, the coldest week of the modern era in New York City, when even the trains want to stay inside and cuddle up under a warm blanket, let us honor the season’s true unsung heroes: winter vestibules.

You know the ones we mean: those little antechambers that pop up outside restaurants and bars each winter, serving as an air lock between the harsh, empty vacuum of the Outdoors and the welcoming, warm hospitality of the Inside. They’re the decompression chamber you enter where you can finally relish the fact that your long, cold slog is over.
(Tim Donnelly. In appreciation of the true heroes of the season: winter vestibules. New York Post. November 20, 2015.)

Enter a restaurant that doesn’t have one, and you’ll loathe every new customer who comes in, bringing with them a brutal reminder of the coldness that awaits outdoors.
(ibid.)

A $160 billion megamerger announced Monday would turn U.S. pharmaceutical behemoth Pfizer Inc. into an Irish drug company, using a controversial tactic that allows companies to dodge billions of dollars in corporate taxes by renouncing their U.S. citizenship.

Pfizer’s deal with Botox-maker Allergan, which would create the world’s largest drugmaker, immediately sparked criticism from Democrats and Republicans in Congress who agree that such deals are problematic but have so far not taken legislative action against them. They slammed the tax loophole called an “inversion,” in which a U.S.-based company buys or merges with a foreign company and moves its headquarters to the country with a lower tax rate.
(Pfizer’s tax-avoiding megamerger with Allergan sparks outcry. The Washington Post. November 23, 2015.)

inversion

“By nominally moving overseas while continuing to take all the benefits of a U.S. company, Pfizer is gaming the system and will avoid paying its fair share of U.S. tax dollars,” Senate Minority Leader Harry M. Reid (D-Nev.) said in a statement. “It’s time for Congress to get serious, close the loopholes, and prevent these kind of inversions from happening in the future.”
(ibid.)

corporate inversion

The act of a parent company based in the United States switching its registration address with that of one of its offshore subsidies in order to take advantage of lower corporation taxes. Corporate inversion has gradually become more popular, though the U.S. government is attempting to limit its use.

What do you do when police request no-one tweets pictures of an operation happening outside your door amid a city-wide lockdown?

For Twitter users in Brussels, the answer was obvious — you obey the police request, help defuse tensions, and defy the terror threat by filling the #BrusselsLockdown hashtag with arguably the internet's most meme-able animal — cats.

Belgian police said there were "various operations underway" in the country linked to a "terrorist threat", and on Saturday Brussels was put on maximum security alert.

While people initially tweeted pictures of police standing guard at hotels and roadblocks in the streets, police made the request asking for "radio silence" regarding the operation.

"For safety, please observe radio silence on social media #Bruxelles ongoing police operations. Thank you," federal police tweeted.
(Dan Smith. #BrusselsLockdown: Twitter users in Belgium combat terror lockdown with cat pictures. ABC News. November 23, 2015.)

Oxford Dictionary(オンライン版)には下記のように定義されています。

An absence of or abstention from radio transmission
A period during which one hears nothing from a normally communicative person or group

dip one's toe into

National seafood chain Joe’s Crab Shack has dipped its toes into fresh waters with a test program to remove tipping from 18 of its more than 130 restaurants, the US company said on Wednesday.

No timeline is in place to implement the plan nationally but the test comes as a nascent movement has been launched to remove a more than century-old tradition of tipping in US restaurants.

At the test locations, Joe’s has paid some workers a minimum of $12 an hour, but did not specify how much workers made previously. The Houston-based company raised menu prices less than 20 percent to compensate for the higher labor costs. Initial surveys have shown improvement in service at places with the no-tipping policy, it said.
(National restaurant chain is putting an end to tipping. New York Post. November 11, 2015.)

dipped its toes into fresh waters

また、Oxford Learner's Dictionary(オンライン版)によりますと、

(informal) to start doing something very carefully to see if it will be successful or not

Collins Cobuild Dictionary of Idiomsでは、

a toe in the water

If you dip your toe in the water, you start slowly and carefully doing something that you have not done before, because you are not sure if you will like it or if it will be successful.

break a leg

昨日、11月18日はLove Theatre Day(日本語でいうと「演劇の日」、とでもなりましょうか)だったそうです。

break a leg

More than a half a million straphangers have asked the MTA to tell their bosses that the transit system ate their commutes.

So far this year, nearly 109,000 riders have requested excuse slips to prove they were clocking in late because they got caught up in a public transit foul-up.

Since the MTA launched the program in May of 2010, more than half a million riders have asked the agency for a subway delay verification confirming that they didn't just oversleep, but that they were stuck underground in a circle of rush hour hell.
(Danielle Furfaro. Late commuters asked MTA for excuse slips more than half a million times. New York Post. November 17, 2015.)

excuse slip

You've temporarily changed your Facebook profile picture to the French tricolor in a sign of solidarity with the citizens of France -- why not paint your nails blue, white and red, too?

Brooklyn-based company Duri Cosmetics has jumped on the tragedy bandwagon by promoting a range of Paris-themed products so "beauty mavens can unite and wave hands (and toes) in unity."

In perhaps the most clueless p.r. stunt of the day, it distributed a gushing press release urging customers to buy three of its nail colors -- "Baton Rouge Blue," "I Do" (solid white) and "Parisian Tango" (red) -- at $6 a pop, describing the gesture as an "effortless way to pay respects and show support."

Trouble is, not a penny of the proceeds will help surviving victims of Friday's massacre, which claimed the lives of 129 people in the French capital.
(Jane Ridley. Nail Polish company exploits Paris tragedy for financial gain. New York Post. November 16, 2015.)

line-sitter

New Yorkers are constantly waiting — for trains, buses, movies or to get through the Midtown Tunnel. They hate waiting so much they are willing to pay line-sitters to buy them cronuts and Shakespeare in the Park tickets.

But in his new book, “Why Does the Other Line Always Move Faster? The Myths and Misery, Secrets and Psychology of Waiting in Line,” author David Andrews says “standing in line is a state of mind.”
(Amber Jamleson. How to improve your time waiting in line. New York Post. November 15, 2015.)

Impatience has a price. Robert Samuel pegs it at $25 for the first hour and $10 for each additional half hour.

Samuel is founder and owner of S.O.L.D. or Same Ole Line Dudes, a professional line-sitting company that fields requests to wait (and wait and wait) for everything from sneaker launches to concert tickets.
(Katie Little. Hate long lines? Meet a professional line sitter. CNBC. June 17, 2014.)

gentrification

"Keep Portland Weird!"

PORTLAND, Ore. — Portland has been a magnet for young, creative adults for over a decade, beckoning droves with its quirkiness, liberal appeal and quality of life. But the city’s popularity has had another effect: Those who helped make it cool can’t afford to live here anymore.

A wave of evictions and skyrocketing rents are putting apartments out of reach of many, especially those working part-time, low wage or artistic jobs. It’s even harder to afford a house.

Some Portlanders are now looking for better-paying work. Some are giving up and leaving.
(Portland hipsters mad they'll have to work full-time jobs to pay the rent. New York Post. November 11, 2015.)

Portlanders has been fighting gentrification and ever-rising home prices with its 'Keep Portland Weird' campaign.
(ibid.)

the process of renewal and rebuilding accompanying the influx of middle-class or affluent people into deteriorating areas that often displaces poorer residents

Portlanders has been fighting gentrification..."

gather dust

Warm weather means cold sales as retailers struggle to get shoppers in the holiday mood.

Winter coats, hats, sweaters and just about anything that keeps consumers warm in the winter have been gathering dust in stores as the unseasonably warm fall has wreaked havoc on retailers.

Shares of Macy’s, Kohl’s, JC Penney and Nordstrom tumbled between 2 percent and 5 percent on Monday as Wall Street braced for gloomy third-quarter results from those retailers beginning this week.
(Lisa Fickenscher. Warm weather keeps shoppers from getting in holiday mood. New York Post. November 10, 2015.)

Wal-Mart Stores pioneered the use of technology and cost-cutting methods that many other retailers are now hustling to adopt. Under Walton, Wal-Mart linked stores with suppliers, using computers to track what is selling and what is gathering dust. That way, Wal-Mart achieved superior inventory control and avoided profit-gouging piles of sale merchandise.
(USA Today. 1992.)

silver spoon

“born with a silver spoon in one's mouth”

They're spoiled. They're demanding. And they're ruining travel for everyone else.

Don't take my word for it. That's what employees say about these guests, which they derisively call "silver spoon" travelers.
(Christopher Elliot. Putting entitled travelers in their place. USA Today. November 8, 2015.)

athleisure

athleisure

It's official: It's socially acceptable to wear your sweats out in public. What makes this possible, you ask? The word "athleisure" will be added to the Merriam-Webster Dictionary in 2016, Quartz reports.

The term refers to "casual clothing designed to be worn both for exercising and for general use." Most recently, athleisure has appeared on models like Gigi Hadid, not to mention the entire Kardashian-Jenner crew. The active/street-wear hybrid has become a focus of many higher-end labels like Mara Hoffman, Rebecca Minkoff, Tory Burch and Derek Lam.
(Kate Bratskeir. 'Athleisure' Will Be Added To The Merriam-Webster Dictionary. Huffington Post. November 9, 2015.)

And yet it's not a completely new concept -- athleisure has some roots in the past. Merriam-Webster told Quartz that the word first appeared in a 1976 ad that ran in the El Paso Herald Post: “Athleisure Shoes by Dunham. One of America’s largest boot & shoe manufacturers,” it reads. “Nylon with suede trim, traction sole.”
(ibid.)

Volkswagen's renewed focus on hybrid and electric vehicles may be its last great hope of containing the fallout from a rapidly spreading diesel emissions scandal that has engulfed its Porsche and Audi brands -- and, most recently, even some of its gasoline-powered cars.

After setting aside more than $7 billion to pay for recalls and repairs, the German automaker lost $1.84 billion in the third quarter -- its first loss in a t least 15 years. And it tumbled from its hard-won perch as the world's largest auto manufacturer, a title it had wrested from Toyota earlier this year.
(Susan Carpenter. VW doubles down on electric vehicles, hoping to move beyond the diesel scandal. OCRegister. November 8, 2015.)

hard-won perch

[Arthur] Blank is credited not only with helping to steer Home Depot to its high perch in merchandising, but also in being a philanthropic leader.
(Atlanta Journal Constitution. 2002.)

dig out of rut

What Whole Foods is doing to try to dig out of its rut

When Whole Foods Market frist began opening its groceries in cities and suburbs across the country, every store launch was something of a test case for whether orgaic eating was niche fad or part of a sweeping change in how many Americans want to eat.

For a while, Whole Foods consistently delivered impressive growth -- so impressive, in fact, that other massive retailers such as Wal-Mart, Kroger and Traget became eager to get in on what the industry now believes is a durable shift toward healthier less-processed food.

And that's when the going got tough for Whole Foods: The category it practically created was suddenly crowded with alternatives that often had lower price tags. On Wednesday, we saw some of the clearest evidence yet of how much Whole Foods has been hurt by this new reality. In its quarterly earnings report, the company said that sales were down 0.2 percent at stores open more than a year, the first time in at least four years it had seen a decline on this metric. Total revenue was up 6 percent, its smallest quarterly increase since at least 2011.
(Sarah Halzack. What Whole Foods is doing to try to dig out of its rut. The Washinton Post. November 5, 2015.)

"dig out of its rut"というフレーズを初めて見たように思うのですが、"rut"とはわだち(轍)のことで、比喩的には“マンネリ”という意味です。

fall into rut

Rockefeller Center is about to be "spruced" up.

The country's most Christmas famous tree — a massive 78-foot, 10 ton Norway spruce — is en route to the Big Apple.

The tree, from the Gardiner, NY, home of Albert Asendorf and Nancy Puchalski, was chopped down and loaded onto a 115-foot-long trailer ahead of its hour-and-a-half journey to the city.
(Sophia Rosenbaum. Rockefeller Christmas tree begins journey to NYC. New York Post. November 4, 2015.)

isinglass

Guinness is set to become vegan friendly for the first time in its 256-year history, as the company announced its plan to stop using fish bladders in its filters.

A spokesman for Guinness told The Times that the firm would now look at using a new filtration plant that would be vegan-friendly, having previously used isinglass - a by-product of the fishing industry used to help the yeast settle faster.

The new system is due to be installed sometime in 2016.

“Whilst isinglass is a very effective means of clarification, and has been used for many years, we expect to stop using it as the new filtration asset is introduced,” the spokesman told The Times.
(Will Grice. Guinness to become vegan-friendly as fish bladder isinglass filtration process ditched after 256 years. The Independent. November 2, 2015.)

tween

Teens are spending more than one-third of their days using media such as online video or music — nearly nine hours on average, according to a new study from the family technology education non-profit group, Common Sense Media. For tweens, those between the ages of 8 and 12, the average is nearly six hours per day.

The Common Sense census was designed to set a new statistical baseline for research on teen and pre-teen media use, said Jim Steyer, the group's executive director.
(Hayley Tsukayama. Teens spend nearly nine hours every day consuming media. The Washington Post. November 3, 2015.)

those between the ages of 8 and 12

a boy or girl who is 11 or 12 years old

A child between the ages of about 10 and 14

It would be an exaggeration to say dirty tricks and mudslinging have been a part of every presidential campaign since the beginning. After all, George Washington did run unopposed.

But hitting below the belt has been a part of US presidential races since the days of suspenders.

As retold in Joseph Cummins’ book, “Anything for a Vote,” here are some of the most vicious, outrageous and frequently ridiculous slams, slanders and ploys used throughout American history to try and gain the White House:
(Michael Kane. A history of dirty tricks in presidential elections. New York Post. November 1, 2015.)

hitting below the belt

braille

If 'love is blind' — then sex can be too.

A 'sensual braille book,' created to give the visually impaired the chance to ogle porn — and feel it too–was presented to the National Library of Sweden this week by Swedish artist Nina Linde.

"Occasionally Blind," offers a titillating array of X-rated images, including scenes of heterosexual, gay and group sex. Illustrations are raised so that people may "experience" the images, which are accompanied by an explanation in braille of the steamy scene.
(Melkorka Licea. Blind people can now ogle braille porn. October 29, 2015.)

a system of writing for blind people in which letters are represented by raised dots

Big Blue

IBM bought The Weather Company because weather affects nearly everything

Big Blue is making a big bet that companies will want to spend money on more accurate weather forecasting.

IBM on Wednesday said that it had acquired most of The Weather Company including Weather.com and Weather Underground news sites as well as its vast trove of weather data. The deal does not include the company's cable television outlet, The Weather Channel, which will continue to broadcast.

IBM would not confirm the financial terms of the deal, but the Wall Street Journal reported that thte price was over $2 billion.
(Jonathan Vanian. IBM bought The Weather Company because weather affects nearly everything. Fortune. October 28, 2015.)

Big Blue

shoestring

A die-hard Mets fan is embarking on one Amazin' journey – on a shoestring budget.

Scott Reing will be taking a mix of low-fare planes, trains and automobiles to see his beloved team take on the Kansas City Royals throughout the week – starting his wallet-conscious odyssey by making a 10-hour trek to Missouri Tuesday to see Game 1.
(Sophia Rosenbaum. Die-hard Mets fan's amazin' low-budget journey to see Game 1. New York Post. October 27, 2015.)

[from shoestrings being a typical item sold by itinerant vendors] : a small sum of money : capital inadequate or barely adequate to the needs of a transaction

Pigging out will kill you, the World Health Organization said Monday — warning that bacon, sausage and other processed meats are now in the same category of cancer risk as smoking cigarettes and inhaling asbestos.

Hot dogs, ham, corned beef and almost every other salted, cured or smoked delicacy have been officially classified as “carcinogenic to humans” — and red meat as “probably carcinogenic” — based on a study by 22 scientists from the WHO’s International Agency for Research on Cancer in Lyon, France.
(OMG! Bacon causes cancer. New York Post. October 26, 2015.)

"pigging out"とは、

The problem was Neal needed to use the restroom. His disability made it too difficult to use the one on the plane. He had already waited more than 15 minutes for the rest of the passengers to disembark, and the wait for an aisle chair -- a narrow, specialized wheelchair to take disabled passengers down the airplane aisle -- had now lasted another 15 minutes.

"I was trying to get them to understand that this is why I don't want to wait another 15 to 20 minutes," Neal said.

After being told repeatedly to wait, Neal said, he couldn't any longer. He said he got out of his seat and as the flight attendants watched, he crawled his way up the aisle and to the gangway, where a wheelchair was then ready.
(United Airlines apologizes after disabled man crawls off flight. CNN. October 26, 2015.)

New York Post

You have probably gotten at least one e-mail from a person offering to send you lots of money from some faraway place. And if you were smart, you ignored these improbably generous offers because the scam detector in your gut went off.

But just for the fun of it, I recently responded enthusiastically to one such offer — then I called Homeland Security so together we could try to find out which particular flim-flam I was about to fall victim to.
(John Crudele. Here’s what happens when you reply to that bogus ‘free money’ email. New York Post. October 19, 2015.)

― go commando

Men who want to be fathers should go commando when they get some R&R, according to a new study.

National Institute of Child Health and Development and Stanford University researchers found that men who wear boxers during the day — and nothing when they sleep — had 25 percent lower rates of damaged DNA in their sperm compared to those who opt for tighty-whities during the day and at night.

The study was based on 500 men whose underwear choices and sleeping habits were tracked for up to 12 months before the quality of their sperm was analyzed.
(David K. Li. Men should go commando if they want kids. New York Post. October 19, 2015.)

go commando

toss your cookies

shoot your cookies
snap your cookies
throw your cookies

Amazon is stepping up its fight against bogus product reviews on its site, suing more than 1,000 people for allegedly offering to post glowing write-ups for as little as $5 apiece.

The complaint, filed Friday in state court in Seattle, takes aim at what is believed to be a burgeoning practice online: Some people try to make money by writing five-star testimonials about products they have never tried, and some companies try to boost sales by commissioning such reviews.
(Amazon suing in attempt to stamp out phony reviews. Washington Post. October 19, 2015.)

glowing write-ups

The AAP had previously recommended that children under 2 years of age should not be sitting in front of a television, playing on tablets or phones at all.

Actually, researchers have spent plenty of time studying the effects of screen time on young children and there is not much positive to be said about it.

Whether it’s watching “Blues Clues” or “Sesame Street,” playing Subway Surfer or some educational app, the effects on kids under the age of 2 are pretty obvious.

When they’re in front of a screen they turn into vegetables, staring at it slack-jawed. Anyone can see the difference between an 18 month old in front of a television and an 18 month old in front of wooden blocks.
(Naomi Schaefer Riley. Hey parents, children and iPads are a bad mix. New York Post. October 18, 2015.)

see eye to eye

Serving breakfast all day is a lot more complicated than it looks.

McDonald’s might be pleased with its roll-out of an all-day breakfast menu, but its franchisees don’t seem to agree.

According to a report by Japanese finance company Nomura, released on Thursday, which surveyed 29 operators at more than 200 locations, the implementation of the new menu has been a disaster, according to Business Insider. Many franchisees complained to Nomura that the all-day breakfast menu slowed service and dragged down quality.
(McDonald's and franchisees don't see eye-to-eye on all-day breakfast. Fortune. October 15, 2015.)

McDonald's and franchisees don't see eye-to-eye on all-day breakfast

Thy watchmen shall lift up the voice; with the voice together shall they sing: for they shall see eye to eye, when the LORD shall bring again Zion.

(新国際訳(New International Version)と呼ばれる版では、"see it with their own eyes"となっており、"see eye to eye"ではありません。)

(they shall) see eye to eye

intifada

This latest Palestinian uprising is a Facebook intifada

TEL AVIV, Israel — They are young, apparently unaffiliated with any political or terror group and brimming with fury over Israel's occupation of Palestinian territories. Their weapons of choice: rocks, knives and social media.

Like the Arab Spring revolutions of 2011 and the recruitment success of the Islamic State, the spreading violence against Israelis in recent weeks seems to have been sparked by spontaneous combustion on Twitter and Facebook, rather than by organized political groups. Social media have been crucial in mobilizing Palestinians for protests, disseminating information and feeding outrage against Israel.
(Shira Rubin. This latest Palestinian uprising is a Facebook intifada. USA Today. October 15, 2015.)

rat out

My boss recently took a bunch of us out for drinks, and at the end of the evening he asked me to put it on my company credit card. That felt weird — like he was trying to hide the fact we spent a lot of money. I paid, but feel like I’m now on the hook if the charge is ever questioned. What should I have done?
(Gregory Giangrande. When is it OK to rat out my coworker? New York Post. October 12, 2015.)

Plane wreckage containing 'many skeletons' and painted with the Malaysian flag has reportedly been found in the Philippines, prompting speculation it could be missing Flight MH370.

Police confirmed they had received reports of the discovery in thick jungle on the remote island of Sugbai in Tawi-Tawi province.

An audio technician, Jamil Omar, contacted police in Malaysia to say his aunt, Siti Kayam, had stumbled upon the wreckage while she and others were hunting for birds.

Police commissioner Jalaludin Abdul Rahman, based in neighbouring Borneo, said the woman claimed she climbed into the smashed fuselage and saw skeletons.
(Daily Mail. October 12, 2015.)

mommy track

On the other hand, the longer a woman stays out of the labour force, the more likely she is to land on the "mommy track," or in low-paying labour, thus reinforcing the gender pay gap, as a recent analysis by UBC researcher Paul Kershaw pointed out.
(Erin Anderssen. An 18-month parental leave needs to include dad. The Globe and Mail. October 9, 2015.)

cadaver dog

A search of the couple's home turned up bloodstains and evidence of blood splatter on the walls, cops said. Cadaver dogs also indicated the presence of possible human remains, according to an arrest report obtained by PEOPLE. The friend also says that the canal behind the couple's home was raked, but she doesn't believe authorities found anything.
(Tara Fowler. Florida Mom Whose 9-Week-Old Baby Has Been Missing for a Month Was a 'Little Off,' Friend Tells PEOPLE. People Magazine. October 8, 2015.)

この単語は、ラテン語cadere(倒れる、滅びる)に由来しています。

WOLFSBURG, Germany — The cornerstone of Adolf Hitler’s dream to bring affordable cars to the masses, this city emerged from the ashes of World War II by hitching its star to Volkswagen.

A look back at Volkswagen’s history. Read the full story here.

VW’s vast global headquarters, along with an auto plant so big it could fit Monaco under its roof, are the engines that drive this city of 125,000. Injected with VW cash, the local soccer team went from third rate to first tier. Thousands of residents live in apartments built by the auto giant. A $500 million Volkswagen theme park — think Disney meets Detroit — lures 2.2 million visitors a year.

But in the wake of an emissions scandal that could cost Volkswagen billions of euros in fines and recalls, this company town is suddenly bracing for something that had become virtually unknown here in recent years: lean times.
(Anthony Fiola. The town that Volkswagen built is both resigned and defiant amid scandal. The Washington Post. October 7, 2015.)

lean times

stop the music

Volkswagen AG’s lavish parties typically featured a surprise guest, from the Pet Shop Boys to Robbie Williams to Justin Timberlake. Now the music is about to stop.

The parade of global pop stars was part of a culture of spending at the world’s biggest carmaker. Confronted with billions in repairs and fines from an engine-rigging scandal, Chief Executive Officer Matthias Mueller vowed on Tuesday to put everything that’s not absolutely vital on hold. Addressing 20,000 workers at Volkswagen’s main Wolfsburg factory in Germany, Mueller prepared the crowd for “massive savings,” in what would “not be a painless process.”
(Elisabeth Behrmann. VW Stops the Music as Diesel Scandal Buries Culture of Spending. Bloomberg. October 7, 2015.)

VW Stops the Music

Inf. Stop everything!; Hold it! (Presses refers to the printing presses used to print newspapers. This means that there is recent news of such magnitude that the presses must be stopped so a new edition can be printed immediately.)
