興味があったので少し調べてみると、同様に、

などの表現も存在することが分かりました。

うまくやってる？ ― check in on
アメリカの小学校で、生徒のランチタイムに保護者が同席することが認められないことになり、母親などから反発が起きている、というニュース記事を目にしました。
After struggling with growing numbers of parents in school cafeterias, the Darien school system said parents and guardians would no longer be welcome to visit with their children during lunch at the town’s elementary schools.
The decision has stirred strong emotions in Darien, a wealthy shoreline community that prides itself on its high-performing public schools. While some parents said it was time to stop a disruptive practice, others have protested at town meetings and in online forums that the change has deprived them of cherished time to check in on their children and model good social behavior.

小生の一番下の娘も今年小学校を卒業してしまいましたが、授業参観日などの特定の機会を除いては学校にいる子供の様子を見に行くということはまずありませんでした。
尤も、学校のルールとしては保護者が学校へ子供の様子を見に行くこと自体は禁止されておらず、簡単な手続きをすればいつでも学校の校舎内や教室に入ることはできるということになっています。ただ、そこまでする親御というのは現実にはあまりいなかったと思われます。
記事になっている小学校のケースでは世帯の平均年収（記事ではMedian、中央値とありますが）が年間20万ドルを越える地域にある学校らしく、かなり裕福な家族が住むところのようです。
ランチタイムに親がひっきりなしに子供につきまとっているという様子からは、"helicopter parents"の雰囲気がしなくもありません。
さて、反発の起きている理由として、

とありますが、ここで"check in (on)"という表現に着目したいと思います。
意味するところは大体想像がつきますが、"check in"（チェックイン）と聞くとどうしてもホテルや空港での「チェックイン」をまず思い浮かべてしまいます。
手元の辞書を改めてチェックしてみたのですが、引用した記事で使われている"check in"の意味にぴったりくるような定義は見当たりません。
そこで思い出したのが、小生の勤務先で使われる"check-in"という表現でした。
縁あってアメリカ人の上司にレポートしておりますが、2～3か月に1回くらい、仕事の進捗やらを共有する目的で、上司と一対一の電話会議が設定されており、その会議のことを"check-in"と彼らは呼んでいます。
仕事の進捗を確認するのが目的ですが、要は「ちゃんとやってるかい？」というような意味合いなのだと思います。
記事の話に戻ると、母親としては子供が学校でいじめられていないか、ちゃんと勉強しているか、ランチを残さず食べているか、等々、心配がつきないのでしょう。
この”check in on”という表現が辞書に載っていないのは不思議です。特殊なビジネス用語でもスラングでもありません。

レストランでいい席を予約するコツ、というものがあるそうですが、New York Post紙の記事を引用します。
What’s the point of nabbing a reservation at a hot New York restaurant during the holiday season if you get stuck at the bathroom-adjacent table, sniffing eau de urine and bleach all night long?

Although the top seat in every house varies, in general, the most coveted seats are the “display tables” — those immediately visible to people just walking in, but far away enough from the front door that there’s no draft.

レストランでも条件のいいテーブルとそうでないテーブルというものがありますよね。予約すれば良いのでしょうが、ふらりと入ったレストランだとトイレに近い席とか、入り口に近い席でひっきりなしに人が出入りして落ち着かない席とか、条件の悪い席に通されることも起こりえます。
記事では早めに予約するというベーシックなやり方から、常連客としてウェイターと仲良くなるとか、はたまた袖の下を渡してネゴするなどのテクニックが紹介されています。
が、結局のところ、一見さんは見た目が大事ということに尽きるようです。

先週金曜日の勤労感謝の日から週末三連休という方も多かったのではないかと思いますが、いかがお過ごしだったでしょうか。
小生はとある地方で開催されたマラソンに参加してきました。天候に恵まれ、晩秋の空気を吸い込んでリフレッシュしてまいりました。
さて、欧米でもこの時期は同様にThanksgiving holidaysのバケーションを家族と過ごしますが、この時期の風物詩として、Black FridayにCyber Mondayなる、ショッピングの狂騒は最近は日本でも見られるようになりました。
今日はちょうどそのCyber Mondayに当たります。

今月の中間選挙で民主党が下院を制し、来年からはねじれ議会となることから、トランプ大統領が掲げるメキシコとの国境に壁を建設する計画が頓挫する可能性が出てきています。
壁建設に50億ドルもの拠出を要求する大統領に対し、民主党は議会での審議拒否による政府機能の停止もちらつかせながら対抗しているというのが現状のようです。

日産ゴーン会長逮捕の衝撃 ― comeuppance
日産自動車のカルロス・ゴーン会長が、証券報告書に自身の報酬を虚偽記載した容疑で東京地検特捜部に逮捕されたというニュースに衝撃が走りました。
私はラジオのニュース速報で知りましたが、一瞬耳を疑いました。
少しして、辣腕経営で名を馳せたゴーン氏の顔が思い浮かびましたが、今回の逮捕は内部通報によるものという報道に、同氏のアグレッシブさが逆に離反を招いた結果かもしれないとも思い始めました。
On Monday, Mr. Ghosn was arrested in Tokyo after a company investigation alleged that he had deceived Japanese financial authorities about his pay package.
According to Tokyo prosecutors, Mr. Ghosn and Greg Kelly, a onetime Nissan human resources manager and current board member, underreported Mr. Ghosn’s compensation between 2011 and 2015 by more than 5 billion yen ($44.5 million). The prosecutors say they declared pay of just under ¥5 billion ($44.3 million), which was half the nearly ¥10 billion ($88.8 million) he actually earned.

mealy-mouthed
亡命していたサウジアラビアのジャーナリストカショギ氏がトルコの大使館で殺害された一件は、サウジアラビアの皇太子がその殺害を直接指示した疑いが強まっています。
一方、トランプ大統領は皇太子の関与については、様々な政治的な思惑があってのことか、明言を避けている模様です。

記事のタイトルで使われている、"mealy-mouthed"とは、あることについて遠回しに言う、はっきりと物を言わない、という意味で用いられる表現なのですが、変わった表現ですね。
American Heritage Dictionaryを引いてみますと、
Akin to the German expression Mehl im Maule behalten, to be indirect in speech (literally, to have meal in the mouth).
という解説がありました。
つまり、ドイツ語のフレーズ"Mehl im Maule behalten"に因むということなのですが、意味合いとしては"have meal in the mouth"ということで、口の中に食べ物を含んで、という意味かと思いました。
改めてドイツ語の辞書も引きましたが、ドイツ語Mehlは"powder"とあり、粉のことです。英語でも"meal"は食事、食べ物という意味の他、粗挽き粉という意味がありますのでそちらを指していることになります。
たしかに、口の中に粉を含んでいるといかにもしゃべりにくそうです。
日本語では「奥歯に物が挟まったような物言い」などと言いますが、それに近いでしょう。
一方、トランプ大統領は皇太子の関与については、様々な政治的な思惑があってのことか、明言を避けている模様です。

President Trump was right to make a deliberately blurry finding on Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman's culpability for the Oct. 2 murder of Saudi dissident, Jamal Khashoggi at the Saudi consulate in Istanbul, Turkey.
"It could very well be that the crown prince had knowledge of this tragic event," Trump declared Tuesday, "maybe he did and maybe he didn’t."

記事のタイトルで使われている、"mealy-mouthed"とは、あることについて遠回しに言う、はっきりと物を言わない、という意味で用いられる表現なのですが、変わった表現ですね。
American Heritage Dictionaryを引いてみますと、
Akin to the German expression Mehl im Maule behalten, to be indirect in speech (literally, to have meal in the mouth).
という解説がありました。
つまり、ドイツ語のフレーズ"Mehl im Maule behalten"に因むということなのですが、意味合いとしては"have meal in the mouth"ということで、口の中に食べ物を含んで、という意味かと思いました。
改めてドイツ語の辞書も引きましたが、ドイツ語Mehlは"powder"とあり、粉のことです。英語でも"meal"は食事、食べ物という意味の他、粗挽き粉という意味がありますのでそちらを指していることになります。
たしかに、口の中に粉を含んでいるといかにもしゃべりにくそうです。
日本語では「奥歯に物が挟まったような物言い」などと言いますが、それに近いでしょう。

昨日は20年近く前に前代未聞のスキャンダルとなった不倫事件の記事を取り上げましたが、今日もその当事者となり一躍時の人となってしまったMonica Lewinskyさんに関する話題です。
当時まだ大学を卒業したばかりの女性が、大統領の不倫疑惑という不名誉な騒動で世間から注目されることになったことによる心労は想像を絶するものがあります。

こんな意味もあったの？ ― attention
何故か今頃になって注目を浴びている、クリントン前大統領の不倫疑惑です。（前大統領は不適切な関係を認めていますので、もはや「疑惑」ではありませんが。）
遡ること1990年代後半なのですが、大統領の弾劾まで提起される前代未聞の事態が起きていました。"impeachment"という単語を初めて覚えたのもこの事件がきっかけでした。

勘違いしていました ― bailout
恥をさらすようですが、また勘違いしていました。
"bailout"という単語があります。財政的な援助を行うことを指すのですが、例えば政府による大企業への緊急財政援助といったお堅いコンテクストで使われることもあれば、以下のように身内の間で単に金銭的援助をするというようなコンテクストでも使われます。

メキシコの麻薬王、El Chapo、ことJoaquin Guzmanの裁判がアメリカ国内で開廷するようですが、陪審員に選出された女性が役目を拒否しているというのでニュースになっています。
NEW YORK – Opening statements in Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman's trial began Tuesday afternoon, following a delay brought on by a juror who was reportedly "too anxious and too upset" to serve on the jury.
The New York Post reports Juror No. 1 showed up with a doctor's note to back up her claims. This is the same woman who sobbed last week after she was chosen to serve on the jury.
The juror said she feared for her safety because Guzman, the most notorious drug trafficker in the world, is known for hiring sicarios, or hitmen, to kill potential witnesses and anyone helping the prosecution against him.
Federal Judge Brian Cogan recognized these fears and ordered the jurors identities to remain anonymous and to be partially sequestered.

昨日取り上げた、トランプ氏によるメディア各社への批判的な言動を民主党が証人喚問で取り上げる可能性について検討しているという話の続きです。
民主党が主に検討しているのはCNNとワシントンポスト紙、そしてアマゾンに対する大統領の言動ということになっています。
このうちアマゾンについては、非常に成長している会社ですが、かねてよりトランプ氏の攻撃対象となっていました。

“This appears to be an effort by the president to use the instruments of state power to punish Jeff Bezos and the Washington Post,” he said.
Schiff appeared to be referencing a report from the Washington Post that cited three sources who said Trump had personally attempted to pressure Postmaster General Megan Brennan to double the shipping rates applied to Amazon deliveries.

大企業が儲け過ぎという批判の一環なのかもしれませんが、トランプ氏はアマゾンが米国の郵便ネットワークに乗じて利益を上げていることを批判しており、ツイッターでもアマゾンにもっと課金すべきとの主張を展開していました。
そして、民主党がここで注目するのが、トランプ氏が郵政長官にアマゾンに対する課金を上げるよう迫ったのではないかという疑惑です。
民主党関係者の発言として引用されている部分では、
browbeat
という動詞が使われています。初めてお目にかかりました。
"browbeat"を辞書で引くと、"intimidate"と同義語であるという説明があり、脅して～させる、という意味が載っています。

米中間選挙は下院で民主党が躍進して過半数を取ったため、来年1月以降はトランプ政権はいわゆる「ねじれ議会」下での政権運営を迫られることになりました。
民主党側は既にトランプ政権を追い込むべく、その準備を着々と進めているようです。

英語では、いわゆるインテリを指すのに、"egghead"という表現を使うそうです。
多少の蔑みが含まれる表現です。Merriam-Websterによると、"informal, often disparaging"との注釈があり、
a person with intellectual interests or pretensions : a brainy person
と定義されています。

米中間選挙は下院で民主党が躍進し、トランプ政権には痛手となりました。共和党は上院では過半数を獲得したものの、今後は「ねじれ」下での運営を余儀なくされます。
さて、以下の記事は投票前のものなのですが、お読みください。
Donald Trump and the Republicans have released what has been described as one of the most racist political adverts in recent years and an attempt to rally the president’s base by portraying Central American migrants as police killers set to overrun the country.
The advert, which Mr Trump tweeted with the message “it is outrageous what the Democrats are doing to our country. Vote Republican now”, focusses on Luis Bracamontes, an illegal immigrant twice previously deported, who in 2014 shot and killed two California police officers, and injured a third. The advert shows Bracamontes, who has been sentenced to death, laughing in court and vowing to kill more officers.
Words across the screen read: “Democrats let him into our country. Democrats let him stay.” It then shows migrants pulling on what appears to be a border fence.
The advert, which many have likened to the notorious “Willie Horton” attack advert that was used by Republicans to undermine and derail the 1988 presidential run of Democrat Michael Dukakis, has been widely denounced as racist, seeking as it does, to compare all migrants to a police killer.
Tom Perez, chairman of the Democratic National Committee, called it the “dog-whistle of all dog-whistles”.

Chuck Schumer, who is Jewish; and for good measure, it included the dog whistle term “88,” which neo-Nazis use as code for “Heil Hitler.”

walkout
今日も何億人という人がグーグル検索をしていると思うのですが、当のグーグル社では世界規模でストライキが起きています。
セクハラ疑惑の渦中で退職した幹部に巨額（90億円！）の退職金が支払われたということが発覚し、2万人を超える従業員の怒りを買っているのです。
More than 20,000 Google employees and contractors participated in the mass global walkout yesterday to protest the company’s handling of sexual harassment allegations against top executives, according to organizers of the protest who published a Medium post this evening. As of September 30th, 2018, Google had 94,372 full-time and contract employees worldwide, meaning more than 20 percent of the entire company participated in the walkout. The event was sparked by an investigation from The New York Times that revealed how Android co-founder Andy Rubin was paid $90 million upon his exit from the company after it learned of a sexual assault allegation against him.

共和党に対し数ポイント差でリードする民主党を牽制するトランプ大統領が持ち出すのは移民問題です。同氏の支持層である白人高齢男性を焚き付ける問題として移民ほど効果的なものはないからです。

That famous phrase, coined by James Carville, one of Bill Clinton's strategists, was Clinton's guiding principle in his 1992 campaign to unseat President George H.W. Bush. This slogan reminded Clinton that the best way to win that election was to talk about the economy, since that issue moved voters. And it worked.
Flash forward to the 2018 midterm election and Donald Trump's guiding principle can be best summed up as, "It's the racism, stupid." Trump is playing on his supporters' worst fears of brown immigrants to scare them to the polls.

トランプ政権の信任が問われる、アメリカの中間選挙が明日6日に迫っていますが、最新の情勢では民主党が7ポイント優位という報道があります。尤も、最後まで何があるか分からない訳で、メディア各社の報道も過熱しているようです。
USA Today紙から引用しました。

この"wrecking ball"というのは家屋などを解体する際に使われる巨大な鋼球のことなんですが、その破壊力は実際に目にしたことのある人はまれではないかと思うのですが、イメージとしてはとてつもない破壊力がありそうです。（浅間山荘事件で使われた、あの巨大な鋼球を思い出します。）

この"wrecking ball"というのは家屋などを解体する際に使われる巨大な鋼球のことなんですが、その破壊力は実際に目にしたことのある人はまれではないかと思うのですが、イメージとしてはとてつもない破壊力がありそうです。（浅間山荘事件で使われた、あの巨大な鋼球を思い出します。）
トランプ政権になってからアメリカ国内経済はある程度上向きになったようですが、同氏の警告は民主党が躍進するならば、経済に壊滅的な打撃を与えることになる、というもののようです。

最近駅前近くや公園などで沢山の人達が集まっているのを目にすることがあります。その誰もが熱心にスマホを覗きこんでいる様子なのですが、何をやっているのかよく分かりません。
スマホに没頭しているそれぞれの人は周りは見えないようです。多くの人が集まっているのにお互いの存在には無関心で手元の画面だけに熱心になっているという様は、側から見ると異様な光景にも見えます。
歩きスマホが社会問題となって久しいですが、これ程までに人間の集中力を引きつけるあの画面の中には何があるのでしょうか？

また、American Heritage Dictionaryでは、Bozo the Clownという、1940年代に出たピエロのキャラクターの影響もあって定着した、ともあります。

アルツハイマー病と虫垂の意外な関係が明らかになりました。
ご存知のようにアルツハイマー病については有効な治療方法が確立されておらず、新薬開発もその多くが失敗に終わっています。
スウェーデンに住む100万人を対象とした調査では、虫垂を切除した人はアルツハイマー病を発症する確率が約2割低いという結果が出たそうです。
(CNN) — It may be painful, but there could be an unusual upside to appendicitis: Those who have had their appendix removed are 20% less likely to develop Parkinson's disease, according to a new analysis of more than 1 million people in Sweden.
The tiny organ, which is attached to and opens into the lower end of the large intestine, may contribute to this brain disorder that affects nearly a million Americans, the researchers say. Their study was published Wednesday in the journal Science Translational Medicine.

普段見ることの多い"appendix"は付録、本の末尾の補遺のことが多いためか、"appendix"と読んですぐに「虫垂」が出てきませんでしたが、医学の用語として"appendix"とは虫垂を指します。
正式名称は"vermiform appendix"だそうですが、"vermiform"のvermi-は虫を意味する接頭辞です。
虫垂炎は、"appendicitis"、虫垂切除術は"appendectomy"となります。
虫垂とアルツハイマーの意外な関係について、詳しくは記事をお読みいただければと思いますが、アルファシヌクレイン（Alpha-synuclein）と呼ばれる、アルツハイマー病発症のカギとなるタンパク質が虫垂に存在することが分かっており、これが脳に移行しているのではないかと見られているようです。
尤も、アルツハイマーを予防する目的で虫垂切除が有効と即断できる訳ではなく、虫垂を切除した人においてアルツハイマー病の発症率が低い背景との関連はさらに研究が必要なようです。
