haymaker

WASHINGTON – New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie blasted Hillary Clinton Sunday for saying top GOPers held the same views on women as terrorists.

“That’s a disgrace — and she’s a disgrace,” Christie declared on Fox News Sunday.

Trying to fight his way back into the Top 10 of the national polls, Christie uncorked haymakers in a lengthy interview Sunday. He said Clinton should be prosecuted for obstruction of justice and mishandling classified material on her home email server if the facts prove true.
(Marisa Schultz. Christie calls Hillary ‘a disgrace’ for comparing GOP to terrorists. New York Post. August 30, 2015.)

"haymaker(s)"という単語に着目しましょう。

ute

THE police officer who was run over by a ute at Heatherton McDonald’s in the early hours of this morning was saved by his protective vest, police believe.
(Police officer run down by ute at Heatherton McDonald’s. The Herald Sun. August 28, 2015.)

― social media lice

Teens should keep their selfies to themselves, lice experts say.

Group selfies are spreading head lice infestations among teens, a Wisconsin pediatrician warned in a back-to-school interview with WBAY-TV on Monday. Dr. Sharon Rink of Appleton joined a growing group of experts who are concerned about so-called “social media lice.”

They blame teens’ head-to-head contact while taking pictures or looking at each other’s phones for an increase in head lice infestation in an age group thought to be less at-risk than younger children.

“Teenagers don’t usually get lice because they’re not sharing hats and things like that,” Rink told the TV station. “And lice can’t jump, so the only way they can transmit lice is touching their heads together, and that’s happening with all these photos.”
(Tobias Salinger. Selfies lead to ‘social media lice’ spreading head lice infestations among teens: experts. New York Daily News. August 25, 2015.)

"surveillance"と"survey" ― surveil

Butterfleye is a hardware startup aiming to build a connected home security camera that avoids coming across as creepily prying.

In our over-surveilled digital times, putting an Internet-connected eye in your home could mean opening a peephole to unknown third parties. Or create a temptation for domestic spying. Which is not the definition of relationship trust, folks. Ergo security and privacy are key considerations for any startups working in such a sensitive area.

Butterfleye is tackling the privacy challenges inherent in offering to sell people a remotely controlled wireless lens by putting a processing layer on the device which it says can run analytics to intelligently detect who or what is in frame before recording and uploading any footage.
(Natasha Lomas. Butterfleye Is A Home Security Camera That Can Learn What Not To Record. TechCrunch. August 26, 2015.)

our over-surveilled digital times

surveilled

Jeb Bush Takes a Cue From Donald Trump’s Playbook: Punch Back
(The New York Times. August 24, 2015.)

After enduring those slings and arrows for weeks, to the mounting dismay of supporters, Mr. Bush, the former Florida governor, and his aides have decided to venture outside their comfort zone and borrow a page from Mr. Trump’s playbook: Hit back, with force and creativity, over and over again in the coming weeks.
(ibid.)

Isolated Kim Relies on Old North Korea Tensions Playbook
(Bloomberg. August 24, 2015.)

Faced with a dilapidated economy and drought at home, and potentially pressured by senior officers in his military to show some mettle, Kim resorted to an old North Korean playbook -- pick a fight to force concessions from South Korea on trade and aid. It’s also a warning to Park against taking North Korea lightly in her dealings with China, Japan and the U.S., all of whom have urged Kim to abandon his nuclear weapons program.
(ibid.)

育児は分担 ― do one's bit

If your partner isn't doing his bit when it comes to looking after the little ones, here's something that might change his ways.

Fathers who carry out a fair share of childcare duties enjoy a better love life and a healthier marriage, a study has found.

Sociologists who studied more than 900 married couples found that those who split the childcare equally had better and more frequent sex.

Not only that, but they also had a happier marriage overall.

When women were mostly or wholly responsible for childcare - taking on more than 60 per cent - the quality of the relationship and satisfaction with sex tended to be lower, for both husband and wife.
(Dads who share childcare have a better sex life - study. New Zealand Herald. August 24, 2015.)

続く段落では、"(carry out) a fair share of childcare duties"とあり、これはこの成句を言い換えたものになっています。

― shed threads

Shedding your threads before tucking in will help you snooze more soundly, says Men’s Health sleep advisor W. Christopher Winter, M.D. Your body temperature declines as you doze and climbs before you wake up, but clothing can interfere with this natural fluctuation, Dr. Winter says.
(Jada Green. 5 scientific reasons you should sleep naked. New York Post. August 20, 2015.)

― out

Ashley Madison

Vatican workers, Big Apple bureaucrats, an English Parliamentarian — and at least one reality TV star — are among those being outed for looking for love in all the wrong places, according to stolen data posted online from the cheaters’ site Ashley Madison.

Dirty details of the site’s more than 36 million users emerged Wednesday after hackers accused the site of being a fraud and made good on a threat to expose users if it wasn’t shut down.

They published the data to the so-called “Dark Web,” a corner of the Internet accessible only by using a special browser.
(Josh Duggar had an Ashley Madison account. New York Post. August 19, 2015.)

420 (four-twenty)

BOISE, Idaho — If you’re looking for milepost 420, you won’t find it in Idaho.

Idaho transportation officials say the mile marker has been replaced with 419.9 signs to curb thieves eager to own a number associated with marijuana enthusiasts.

Turns out, Idaho isn’t alone in this problem. States like Washington and Colorado have also replaced 420 signs with 419.9 after consistently having to replace them after thefts by supposed sticky-fingered stoners.
(Idaho replaces mile marker 420 with 419.9 to thwart stoners. New York Post. August 18, 2015.)

afoul

A small drug-maker from North Carolina may succeed this week where many of the world’s largest pharmaceutical companies have failed: in winning approval for the first drug to boost women’s sexual desire.

The husband-and-wife team that founded Sprout Pharmaceuticals is not new to the pharmaceutical business or even to marketing drugs to people frustrated with their sex lives. The couple’s previous company, Slate Pharmaceuticals, sold an implantable testosterone pellet to men with low levels of the hormone.

But Slate’s marketing push ran afoul of federal rules, making misleading, unsupported statements about the benefits of testosterone therapy while down-playing risks. In fact, when the Food and Drug Administration held a meeting examining the overprescribing of testosterone last year, it played Slate’s commercial as an example of inappropriate marketing.
(Matthew Perrone. Drug execs behind female libido pill have run afoul of FDA. Athens Banner Herald. August 17, 2015.)

The search for a pill to increase women’s libido has been something of a holy grail for the pharmaceutical industry since the blockbuster success of Viagra for men in the late 1990s. Pfizer, Bayer and Procter & Gamble all studied — then abandoned — potential treatments for female sexual desire disorder.
(ibid.)

dystopia

In a memo to employees first obtained by technology news site GeekWire, the online retailer’s chief said that anyone who worked at a company like the one portrayed in the Times’ story would be “crazy to stay” before adding that he hopes workers “don’t recognize the company described.”

“[The article] claims that our intentional approach is to create a soulless, dystopian workplace where no fun is had and no laughter heard,” Bezos wrote. “Again, I don’t recognize this Amazon and I very much hope you don’t, either. More broadly, I don’t think any company adopting the approach portrayed could survive, much less thrive, in today’s highly competitive tech hiring market.”
(Ryan Mac. Jeff Bezos: Anyone Working At A Company Described In New York Times Story Would Be 'Crazy To Stay.' Forbes. August 17, 2015.)

また、J.S.

chew the fat

Mother Tongue. Penguin Books. 1990.)

Scientists ID 6th taste as subjects chew the fat

Taste, the sense that allows us to appreciate the beauty of good food, is something scientists understand fairly well. The sensation we feel when eating a piece of cake, chewing on a hamburger or taking the first bite of a piping hot piece of pizza is triggered when chemicals in the food interact with receptors in our mouths.
(Arkansas Online. August 3, 2015.)

Almost every household in the UK regularly buys bread, but are you using your loaf when it comes to this popular product?

“Most of us mindlessly pick up a loaf of bread once or twice a week without really knowing what’s in it. We just assume it’s healthy,” says nutritionist Vicki Edgson.
(Just how unhealthy is our daily bread? Use your loaf and find out. Mirror.co.uk. March 22, 2012.)

Use your loaf...

sausage and mash

Visitors to East London in search of a cash machine while attending the Olympics this past summer might have been puzzled by the ATM on Commercial Street. Tap the screen and a prompt pops up: English or Cockney? If Cockney is chosen, the next prompt advises the customer in search of "fast sausage and mash" (cash) to select the amount. Among the options: A "Lady Godiva" (£5), "speckled hen" (£10), or "horn of plenty" (£20), to be dispensed after the customer enters a "Huckleberry Finn" (pin).
(Cathy Newman. In Need of "Sausage and Mash"? Visit an East London ATM. National Geographic. February 14, 2013.)

Brahms and Liszt

Yet no matter how Mozart and Liszt a driver was, until he (or she) was involved in an accident or committed a major driving offence, alcohol levels couldn't be checked.
(Tony Davis. Milestones: Breath testing goes random. Drive. May 3, 2014.)

Now that the East End of London has moved upmarket, cockney rhyming slang no longer has much currency. So you may have forgotten its word for drunkenness. It is Mozart – or sometimes Brahms. Why? Because "Mozart-and-Liszt" rhymes with pissed.
(Ski Amadé: Orchestral manoeuvres in the light. The Independent. August 7, 2015.)

on the period

Donald Trump’s slamming of Megyn Kelly continued on Friday night, with the presidential candidate seeming to imply that Kelly’s aggressive questioning during the first GOP debate was because she was on her period.

During an interview with CNN’s Don Lemon, Trump unleashed a rather graphic criticism of the journalist:
(Jessica Estepa. Trump on Megyn Kelly: She had 'blood coming out of her wherever.' USA Today. August 8, 2015.)

rat

Gym rats may seem to be the picture of good health, but a new study suggests that many men who prioritize their workouts are abusing legal bodybuilding supplements to achieve their lean and muscular look.
(Karen Kaplan.
Bodybuilding supplements fuel eating disorders in some men, study suggests. Los Angeles Times. August 6, 2015.)

Like any self-respecting starlet, she does her fair share of shopping. The confessed mall rat has 11 millions of clothes and sneakers.
(Joan Morgan. The making of miss thang! Essence. 2000.)

― tank

Whole Foods

After being accused of consistently overpricing some food products in its New York City stores earlier this summer, the company's co-CEOs issued an apology. And last week, Whole Foods' stock tanked more than 10% after a disappointing third-quarter earnings report.
(Hadley Malcolm. Whole Foods oops: 'Asparagus water' a mistake. USA Today. August 5, 2015.)

...Whole Foods' stock tanked more than 10% after a disappointing third-quarter earnings report...

Thousands of public US companies will soon likely be forced to share a number many would rather keep under wraps: How much more their chief executives make than their typical rank-and-file employees.

The US Securities and Exchange Commission is expected Wednesday to finalise a long-delayed rule forcing businesses to share their "pay ratio," a simple bit of arithmetic that would cast an unprecedented spotlight on one of corporate America's thorniest debates.

Once the pay-ratio rule is in place, millions of workers will know exactly how their top boss's payday compares to their own, revealing a potentially embarrassing disparity in corporate riches that many companies have long fought to keep hidden.
(This new rule could reveal the huge gap between CEO pay and worker pay. The Sydney Morning Herald. August 5, 2015.)

When the CEOs of fast food companies in the US make 1200 times more than their average employees, you have to start asking what the boss is doing that is worth so much more than flipping burgers.

New York-based public policy organisation Demos reported this month that fast food CEOs are at the front of the "gravy train" as some of the highest-paid executives in America, earning an average $US26.7 million ($28.9 million) in 2012.

At the same time, their employees are the lowest-paid in the US. Some of them are reportedly surviving on food stamps, even though they work full time.

The boss-to-worker pay ratio is more out of whack in the US than anywhere else. In large listed firms, the average CEO in the US is paid 354 times what the average worker earns, compared with 206:1 in Canada, 104:1 in France, 93:1 in Australia and 84:1 in the UK.
(Fiona Smith. What is your boss really worth? Financial Review. April 29, 2014.)

A sixth basic taste may soon [sic] the ranks of sweet, salty, sour, bitter and umami — but it doesn’t really taste that good.

In a new study published in the journal Chemical Senses, scientists have declared “fat” as the sixth taste but its official name may be a little hard to digest. Oleogustus is Latin for "a taste for fat."

According to NPR, scientists have been working for a while to officially declare fat as the sixth taste. But to qualify as a true taste, a flavor must past a rigorous test including triggering “specific receptors on our taste buds” and posses a “unique chemical signature.”

oleogustus

B面 ― on the flip side

The health news on coffee seems to vary daily; one day it's good for you, the next, it may not be.

Yet new findings published in the Journal of Alzheimer's Disease reveal that coffee could be beneficial for cognitive health, particularly among older individuals.

Researchers at the University of Bari Aldo Moro in Italy conducted a survey of about 1,400 elderly Italians between the ages of 65 and 84 over the course of three years. Findings revealed that those who drank about two cups of coffee a day were less likely to develop mild cognitive impairment (MCI) than those who abstained from drinking coffee.

However, it's important to keep everything in moderation. On the flip side, researchers found that those who drank too much coffee increased their risk for onset of mild cognitive degeneration.
