muckraker

を"much..."

Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Seymour Hersh says the much-heralded US raid that killed Osama bin Laden in 2011 is nothing but "one big lie."

"Not one word of it is true," the legendary muckraker told The Guardian newspaper about what the Obama administration has said — and US media reported — on bin Laden’s death in 2011. He did not elaborate.
(Joe Tacopino. Pulitzer Prize winner: Osama raid was 'one big lie.' New York Post. September 29, 2013.)

man ... with a Muckrake in his hand

American Heritage Dictionaryによると、

From the man with the muckrake, tool for raking muck, who cannot look up to heaven because he is so obsessed with the muck of worldly profit, in Pilgrim's Progress by John Bunyan.

Ponzi scheme

"Ponzi scheme"

Ponzi schemer Barry Minkow facing third strike

Two-time felon Barry Minkow is facing financial fraud charges for a third time.

Minkow could be hauled before a judge soon over allegations that he misused funds and swindled members of the San Diego church where he became head pastor after serving prison time for the ZZZZ Best investment scam in the 1980s, court documents reveal.
(Kaja Whitehouse. Ponzi schemer Barry Minkow facing third strike. New York Post. September 25, 2013.)

It's not a nose job gone wrong, if that’s what you think. This Chinese man did grow nose on his forehead as a replacement to his old one for a reconstruction technique.
(Man Grows Nose on His Forehead for 9 Months as Replacement to Old One. Headlines & Global News. September 25, 2013.)

nose job
plastic job

― crinkle

Burger King wants people to feel less guilty about gobbling up its french fries.

The world's No. 2 hamburger chain is launching a new crinkle-cut french fry on Tuesday that it says has about 20 percent fewer calories than its regular french fries.

The chain says a small order of the new "Satisfries" clocks in at 270 calories because of a new batter that doesn't absorb as much oil. By comparison, a small order of its regular fries, sans crinkles, has 340 calories.

The concept of taking an indulgent food and removing some of the guilt isn't new, of course. Supermarkets are filled with baked Lay's potato chips, 100-calorie packs of Oreos and other less fattening versions of popular treats. Such creations play on people's inability to give up their food vices, even as they struggle to eat better. The idea is to create something that skimps on calories, but not on taste.
(Burger King concocts lower-calorie 'Satisfries.' Fox News. September 24, 2013.)

A nap appeared to help three-to-five-year-olds better remember pre-school lessons, US researchers said.

University of Massachusetts Amherst researchers studied 40 youngsters and report their findings in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

The benefit persisted in the afternoon after a nap and into the next day.

The study authors say their results suggest naps are critical for memory consolidation and early learning.

When the children were allowed a siesta after lunch they performed significantly better on a visual-spatial tasks in the afternoon and the next day than when they were denied a midday snooze.
('Afternoon naps' aid children's learning. BBC News. September 24, 2013.)

nap

siesta

sexta hora

skid row

A businessman scheming to get his profit-minded hands on dozens of new iPhones allegedly recruited about 100 homeless people from Skid Row in Los Angeles to wait in line overnight at the Pasadena Apple Store, but many were left unpaid and stranded after his plan was exposed, local media reported Friday.

The unidentified reseller had offered $40 to each hired hand who bought an iPhone for him, which he bragged about to others in the line of about 200 people, the San Gabriel Valley Tribune reported. When they learned of the scheme, store personnel stopped selling the latest iPhone models to the homeless stand-ins.
(Michael Winter. L.A. homeless hired to buy latest iPhones. USA Today. September 20, 2013.)

homeless people from Skid Row (in Los Angeles)

― honor crime

Four held for 'honour killing' of couple in India's Haryana

Police in the Indian state of Haryana have arrested four people over the killing of a couple who were planning to marry despite family opposition.

A 23-year man was beaten and beheaded and his 20-year-old girlfriend was also killed in Rohtak district on Wednesday, according to police.

The woman's father, mother, brother and one other person have been held over the murders - they made no comment.

Police told the BBC they were treating the case as an "honour crime".

So-called honour crimes are common in India, where many still prefer arranged marriages within their own caste and love matches are often frowned upon.
(Four held for 'honour killing' of couple in India's Haryana. BBC News. September 19, 2013.)

"Honour" crime involves violence, including murder, committed by people who want to defend the reputation of their family or community.

Honour killing is the murder of a person accused of bringing shame upon his or her family.

It happens worldwide, from South America to Asia.

― fine line

Starbucks says guns are no longer welcome in its cafes, though it is stopping short of an outright ban on firearms.

The fine line that the retailer is walking to address the concerns of both gun rights and gun control advocates reflects how heated the issue has become, particularly in light of recent mass shootings.

Most states allow people to openly carry licensed guns in some way and many companies do not have policies banning firearms in their stores. But Starbucks has become a target for gun control advocates, in part because of its liberal-leaning corporate image. In turn, gun rights advocates have been galvanized by the company’s decision to defer to local laws.
(Starbucks: ‘Leave the gun at home.’ New York Post. September 18, 2013.)

to address the concerns of...

"fine line"を使った表現に、"tread a fine line between..."

Clinical trials are also a complicated pact, emotionally and ethically, between desperate patients and doctors who must balance their ambition as researchers against their duty as clinicians, and must walk a fine line between offering too much hope and not enough.
(New York Times. 2009.)

Allred said she has been bombarded with questions from men who want to know whether their workplace behavior is innocent or whether they'll be slapped with a lawsuit for flirting. She acknowledged that there is a fine line between flirting and harassment, and that men must proceed at their own risk.
(San Francisco Chronicle. 1991.)

If you say that there is a fine line between two different activities or situations, you mean that there is, in fact, a point at which it is difficult to distinguish between them. You often say this when one activity or situation is acceptable, and the other is not.

Telstra is introducing new technology in a bid to stop cyber criminals turning customers' computers into launch pads for cyber attacks.

The telco will introduce 'malware protection technology' to its BigPond network from October, becoming the first Australian internet provider to do so.

The technology is designed to protect against types of malicious software - or malware - known as botnets.

When the malware infects a computer, it sets up an internet link with an external server managed by cyber criminals.

Unbeknownst to users, cyber criminals can then covertly use the infected computer as a launch pad for spam and other attacks, and potentially access personal information.
(Telstra beefs up anti-malware technology. Sky News. September 17, 2013.)

― catapult

In a country where many girls are still discouraged from going to school, Sushma Verma is having anything but a typical childhood.

The 13-year-old girl from a poor family in north India has enrolled in a master’s degree in microbiology, after her father sold his land to pay for some of his daughter’s tuition in the hope of catapulting her into India’s growing middle class.

Verma finished high school at 7 and earned an undergraduate degree at age 13 – milestones she said were possible only with the sacrifices and encouragement of her uneducated and impoverished parents.
(Indian girl, 13, starts microbiology master’s. New York Post. September 16, 2013.)

in the hope of catapulting her into India's growing middle class

to cause (someone or something) to quickly move up or ahead or to a better position
to quickly move up or ahead : to quickly advance to a better position
(Merriam-Webster English Dictionary)

Since The Purpose Driven Life catapulted him to fame in 2002, Warren has been in an unenviable position.
(Newsweek. 2009.)

The pioneer in this field was Canadian Mark Rowswell - better known as Da Shan, or Big Mountain - whose pitch-perfect Mandarin and comedic skill catapulted him to national celebrity in the late 1980s.
(Christian Science Monitor. 2007.)

The critically acclaimed thriller not only salvaged Hopkins' lagging movie career, it also catapulted him from character actor to bona movie star.
(Time. 2001.)

The U.S. and Russia announced an agreement Saturday aimed at setting a timetable for destruction of Syria's chemical weapons and averting a proposed U.S. military strike against the war-torn Middle Eastern nation.

Under the agreement, hammered out on the third day of tense talks in Geneva, the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons and the United Nations will be responsible for dismantling Syria's chemical weapons capabilities.

Syrian President Bashar Assad would be required to provide an accounting of those weapons within a week.
(U.S., Russia cut deal on Syria's chemical weapons. USA Today. September 14, 2013.)

Don’t trust anyone under 40!

An overwhelming majority of younger Americans don’t think twice about fibbing their way out of a tough spot, according to a poll measuring generational views of truth and lying.

A whopping 80 percent of Millennials find it acceptable to lie to avoid embarrassment, compared to 57 percent of Baby Boomers, who believe it’s OK to lie their way out of an awkward scene.

The poll, commissioned by footwear line Crocs, cast a stark light on how the 18-to-32 Gen Y crowd views ‘truthiness,’ as opposed to aging, one-time rebels of the Baby Boom, now between 49 and 67.
(David K. Li. Millennials lie to get by: study. New York Post. September 12, 2013.)

Apple Inc. introduced two new smartphones and a brand-new pricing model to the faithful this week.

The iPhone 5S is the model for the typical deep-pocketed Apple customer. Improvements over the previous model include a faster processor, a better camera and the only real innovation, a new fingerprint-scanning security feature that will replace the need for some passwords. Without the typical two-year cellular phone contract, the 5S will cost $649 to $849 (or $199 to $399 with a contract).

Meanwhile, as widely expected, Apple also introduced a lower-priced model, the iPhone 5C, which will come encased in an array of brightly colored polycarbonate casings instead of the high-end model's shiny metal. Appearances aside, Apple didn't skimp on features for the 5C, and that's reflected in the price tag: $550-$650 without a contract and $99-$199 with one.
(Apple's gamble on a cheaper iPhone. San Francisco Chronicle. September 11, 2013.)

Apple didn't skimp on features (for the 5C)

― gulf

the gap between the rich and the poor...

The gulf between the richest 1% of the USA and the rest of the country got to its widest level in history last year.

The top 1% of earners in the U.S. pulled in 19.3% of total household income in 2012, which is their biggest slice of total income in more than 100 years, according to a an analysis by economists at the University of California, Berkeley and the Paris School of Economics at Oxford University.
(Matt Krantz. Top 1% take biggest income slice on record. USA Today. September 10, 2013.)

FORTUNE -- The tech world's attention will turn to Apple headquarters in Cupertino, Calif. Tuesday, where the company is rumored to debut the enhanced high-end iPhone 5S and the lower-cost iPhone 5C. Other devices, potentially the long-rumored iWatch, could also be showcased.

"The loyalty of Apple users is at stake, both the geeks as well as regular consumers," said Peter Warman, founder of research firm Newzoo.

That's because the impending launch of iOS 7 will impact users of older iPad, iPhone, and iPod Touch devices. These consumers will be forced to upgrade to a new device because an increasing number of apps or updates no longer will work on the older operating systems.
(John Gaudiosi. Why Apple remains king of the mobile game. CNN. September 9, 2013.)

Merriam Webster

an enthusiast or expert especially in a technological field or activity
Merriam Webster

beer geek
wine geek

bike geek
drama geek
gardening geek

2020年五輪開催都市が東京に決定 ― a safe pair of hands

BUENOS AIRES – In a climate of political and economic uncertainty, following a bit of risk-taking by awarding Games to Sochi and Rio de Janiero, the International Olympic Committee opted for a "safe pair of hands" by selecting Tokyo to host the 2020 Summer Olympics.

Tokyo breezed past Istanbul, 60-36, in the final round of voting. The Japanese city was the favorite from the start, earning the most votes in the initial round with 42. With 26 votes each, Madrid and Istanbul went to a tiebreaker and Madrid was eliminated by four votes.
(Kelly Whiteside. Tokyo will host 2020 Summer Games. USA Today. September 7, 2013.)

Delivery: because Tokyo can be trusted to be the safe pair of hands - and much more.

"Tokyo can be trusted to be the safe pair of hands and much more," bid leader and IOC member Tsunekazu Takeda said in the final presentation. "Our case today is simple. Vote for Tokyo and you vote for guaranteed delivery. … Tokyo is the right partner at the right time."

Added IOC president Jacques Rogge: "You have described yourself as a safe pair of hands. As a surgeon, this is something that appeals to me even if I didn't vote myself," he joked when asked why Tokyo won. He also cited the high quality of the bid and the experience of those behind it.
(ibid.)

Collins Cobuild Dictionary of Idiomsによりますと、"a safe pair of hands"は以下のように定義されています。

If you refer to someone, especially a politician, as a safe pair of hands, you mean that they are good at their job and unlikely to make any serious mistakes. This expression is used mainly in British English.

President Barack Obama is heading into the lion’s den of Russia, confronting Syria’s key patron as well as foreign leaders skeptical of his call for an international military strike against Bashar Assad’s government.

Obama on Thursday began a two-day visit to St. Petersburg for the Group of 20 economic summit, putting him in the same country as Edward Snowden for the first time since the American fugitive fled to Moscow earlier this year. Both Syria and Snowden have been sore points in an already strained U.S.-Russian relationship, fueling the notion that Obama and Russian President Vladimir Putin just can’t get along.
(Josh Lederman. Obama enters the lion’s den: U.S. President in Russia to talk Syria. The Globe and Mail. September 5, 2013.)

tough sell

Even after Senate vote, Syria is still a tough sell
(Aliyah Frumin. MSNBC. September 4, 2013.)

a tough sell

It can be a tough sell persuading Washingtonians to allow their houses to be used as movie locations, said Brubaker. "Even if they are interested, their attitude is often not to show it," he added. In Southern California, by contrast, renting houses for movies has become a cottage industry. "People there build homes with film companies in mind," said Brubaker.
(The Washington Post. 1993.)

"persuading..."

Some skeptics, of course, cite their own analyses to question whether greenhouse gas emissions are really an urgent problem that needs to be fixed. And their opinions on the Internet have influenced others. But beyond that, psychologists say, the nature of climate change itself makes it a tough sell for many people.
(Associated Press. 2009.)

― upchuck

Will the threat of a $50 fine deter drunks from vomiting in taxicabs?

That’s the intent of a proposed ordinance in Key West, Fla., which could soon join the cities of Chicago and Austin, Tex., in fining inebriated passengers who upchuck in cabs following a night on the town.

“In the event that a taxicab passenger soils the interior of a taxicab with bodily fluids or solids, a $50 clean-up fee will be added to the trip fare,” posits the ordinance, which has already received tentative approval by the Key West City Commission.
(Can a proposed $50 fine prevent drunks from throwing up in cabs? The Global and Mail. September 3, 2013.)

raunchy

1: slovenly, dirty
2: obscene, smutty

(Herald Sun)

Now, Lady Gaga Defends Miley Cyrus' Raunchy Performance at the MTV Awards, Calls One Direction "Cute"
(International Business Times)

Las Vegas casino seeks to evict raunchy nightclub
(San Francisco Chronicle)

WASHINGTON — It's now up to Congress to put up or shut up.

In passing a high-stakes buck on Syria to Congress, President Obama on Saturday made a shrewd, if very belated, political move.

He's making virtue out of dissent-filled necessity.

Americans are dubious about military action in Syria, even given the horror of the government's chemical weapons attack on its own citizens. And a rambunctious Congress has bristled at what it has claimed was a needlessly unilateral action Obama was about to take.

So, presto, he'll now present his evidence to Congress and let them decide.

It takes a significant burden off him and inevitably deflects some of the potential very negative consequences to the 535 members of the House and Senate.
(James Warren. President Obama forces Congress to assume burden of Syria intervention decision. New York Daily News. August 31, 2013.)

To pass (a task or duty) to another, especially so as to avoid responsibility

The Syrian government mocked Obama's pass-the-buck decision, calling it "the start of the historic American retreat" in its state-run newspaper, Al Thawa.
(Obama administration presses Congress, reveals Syria's regime used deadly, banned sarin gas on people. New York Daily News. September 1, 2013.)
