number

Naomi Osaka wore a jaw-dropping white number to walk onto Court 3 for her first-round match at Wimbledon on Monday.

The four-time Grand Slam champion donned an all-white, full-length kimono as she stepped onto the court before her 6-1, 7-5 win over Elsa Jacquemot.

Osaka, 28, has long been known for her creative fashion choices for her matches. This time, Osaka said, she was inspired by her Japanese heritage and Lucy Liu’s character in “Kill Bill,” one of her favorite movies.
(Grace McCarron. Naomi Osaka reveals what inspired her kimono before first-round Wimbledon win. New York Post. June 30, 2026.)

Naomi Osaka wore a jaw-dropping white number to walk onto Court 3 for her first-round match at Wimbledon on Monday.

an item of merchandise and especially clothing

narrowing

If you’re an older adult, you’ve probably fallen into the trap that one doctor calls “the narrowing.”

“Most of my patients have no idea it’s happening. They think it’s just aging. It’s not,” Dr. Howard Luks, an orthopedic surgeon, wrote on X.

“The narrowing is the slow shrinking of what your body allows you to do — or what you assume your body can or should be doing at your age.”

The problem, he said, is people experience some limitations and adjust to them, rather than try to push through or overcome them, assuming there’s nothing they can do about it.
(Allie Yang. Beware ‘the narrowing’ — doctor warns it can steal your strength as you age. New York Post. June 24, 2026.)

narc

Vance repeatedly pushed back when the co-hosts pointed out Trump’s past ties to Epstein. He falsely suggested that the friendship was “back in the 1980s,” when in fact the close relationship was documented throughout the 1990s.

According to an FBI document, Trump called the Palm Beach Police Department when the police opened an investigation into Epstein in the mid-2000s and said, “Thank goodness you’re stopping him. Everyone has known he’s been doing this.”

Vance depicted the call this way: Trump “narced on him to the police and led ultimately to Jeffrey Epstein’s downfall.” But an investigation was already underway at the time.
(Brian Stelter. JD Vance confesses to ‘The View’ that he’s an Epstein ‘conspiracy theorist’. CNN. June, 16, 2026.)

Trump “narced on him to the police and led ultimately to Jeffrey Epstein’s downfall.”

"narc(ed)"には、

To act as an informer; snitch
(American Heritage Dictionary)

NACHO

NACHO

Not A Chance Hormuz Opens

You’ve heard of the TACO trade. Now there’s a new Wall Street acronym borrowed from the pages of a Tex-Mex menu.

Enter NACHO, or “Not A Chance Hormuz Opens.” The idea is that the all-important shipping route for global energy supplies will remain effectively shut until the economic costs of its closure—including higher oil prices and accelerating inflation—start piling up.
(The NACHO Trade Is Taking Shape on Wall Street. Wall Street Journal. May 11, 2026.)

NIMBY

The national fight against data centers recently came to my neighborhood. Like dandelions in the spring, signs proclaiming opposition to a massive development that includes a $10 billion Meta data center have popped up in my neighbors’ lawns.

My neighbors’ protest is focused on plans to pump as much as 25 million gallons of water a day out of a reservoir that serves as a main source of drinking water for Indianapolis and its suburbs, largely to serve the business interests of Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg and friends.

Those concerns aren’t unique. Americans across the political spectrum have objected to the construction of data centers because of the vast amounts of water, electricity and land they consume.
(Tim Swarens. We can't trust Big Tech to be responsible with data centers | Opinion. USA Today. April 19, 2026.)

A recent report by Data Center Watch found that residents and activists in multiple states were successful in delaying or stopping data center projects worth a combined $64 billion between May 2024 and March 2025.

But thousands of other data centers have been built or are planned across the United States.

In Indianapolis, protests against a planned data center took a dangerous turn when shots were fired on April 6 at the home of a city-county council member who voted in favor of the project. The councilman, Ron Gibson, said he found a note saying “no data centers” after the shooting. Gibson and his 8-year-old son were at home when bullets shattered a glass storm door.

Thankfully, the great majority of NIMBY (not in my backyard) activism is peaceful.

Although I am generally a YIMBY – economic growth is an essential tool for improving our quality of life – I do pause when it comes to data centers.

My hesitancy about the projects hinges less on concerns about water and electricity and more on the lack of long-term return on investment for communities.
(ibid.)

NIMBY

で、これは"not in my backyard"の頭文字を取ったものです。

narco-terrorism

narco-terrorism

Venezuela's Nicolás Maduro and his wife, politician and attorney Cilia Flores, made their first court appearance at a federal court in New York City Monday afternoon, when they both pleaded not guilty to all charges.

Maduro is facing charges of narco-terrorism conspiracy, cocaine-importation conspiracy and weapons charges. Flores and other senior Venezuelan officials, including Maduro's son, are also facing charges.
(Maduro and wife plead not guilty to narco-terrorism charges. NPR. January 5, 2026.)

Terrorism carried out to prevent interference with or to divert attention from illegal narcotics trafficking.

terrorism financed by profits from illegal drug trafficking

nativity

A small South Carolina town committee refused to remove a Nativity scene from a market parking lot after the mayor ordered it taken down from public property.

Mayor Miko Pickett asking her to remove the Nativity scene, citing concerns about residents of other faiths and beliefs in the community.
(Kristine Parks. South Carolina town committee keeps Nativity scene up in defiance of mayor: ‘Christmas is not about Santa’. New York Post. December 21, 2025.)

SATELLITE BEACH, Fla. - A nativity-themed Christmas light display that was shut down in Satellite Beach over a lighting ordinance has found a new home in Cocoa Beach, where it is now drawing visitors nightly.
(Esther Bower. Nativity light display shut down in Satellite Beach finds new home: 'Just gorgeous'. Fox35 Orlando. December 19, 2025.)

Some U.S. churches are reimagining Nativity scenes — surrounding the Holy Family with ICE agents or separating Jesus from Mary and Joseph — to protest the Trump administration's intensifying immigration crackdowns.

Why it matters: The displays have become one of the most visible acts of Christmas dissent amid ramped-up workplace raids, home arrests and new restrictions on asylum and legal immigration.
(Russell Contreras. Nativity scenes become protest art in a season of deportations. Axios. December 19, 2025.)

nothing burger

There’s one thing all Americans who have been reading or hearing news about Jeffrey Epstein’s files or Jeffrey Epstein’s client list need to do: They need to believe the Trump administration’s sudden assertion that the Jeffrey Epstein case is a nothing burger and, above all, stop repeating the name Jeffrey Epstein.

Remember, President Donald Trump has had it with people mentioning Jeffrey Epstein, telling the MAGA faithful in a Truth Social post on July 12 to “not waste Time and Energy on Jeffrey Epstein, somebody that nobody cares about.”
(Rex Huppke. Please stop talking about Jeffrey Epstein. You're making Donald Trump mad. USA Today. July 14, 2025.)

nothing burger

a thing that is less consequential or important than originally suspected

nakedly illegal

Norm Eisen explained this weekend how he believes Donald Trump — during the president’s first week back in the White House — is fulfilling his campaign promise to act like a “dictator.”

Trump told Fox News’ Sean Hannity in December 2023 that he’d be authoritarian in nature only on “day one” of his return to office.

But Trump has “carried that forward through the entire week,” Eisen, the former Obama White House ethics lawyer, told MSNBC’s Jen Psaki.

Trump’s Friday overnight firings of independent inspector generals “is a nakedly illegal action,” argued Eisen, who noted how they appeared to flout federal law of Congress requiring 30 days notice of and explanation for such a dismissal.
(Lee Moran. Ex-White House Ethics Lawyer Accuses Donald Trump Of ‘Nakedly Illegal Action’. Huffington Post. January 27, 2025.)

a nakedly illegal action

Being without addition, concealment, disguise, or embellishment
(American Heritage Dictionary)

nakedly political
nakedly emotional
nakedly racist
nakedly aggressive

neurodivergent

MAGA-affiliated accounts on social media have mocked Tim Walz's 17-year-old neurodivergent son Gus for crying during his father's speech at the Democratic National Convention on Wednesday.

Gus Walz, who has ADHD, along with a non-verbal learning disorder and an anxiety disorder, and his mom Gwen Walz, were crying when the Democratic vice-presidential nominee gave them a shout-out before the roaring crowd.

Early in Tim Walz's speech, he spoke about his and his wife's struggles with infertility before conceiving their daughter Hope Walz, 23, who was also in attendance. The Minnesota governor gave a brief shoutout to his family, saying, "Hope, Gus and Gwen, you are my entire world, and I love you."

Gus was seen crying and cheering after being mentioned by his father, including pointing to the stage and appearing to say, "That's my dad."
(Flynn Nichols. MAGA Mocks Tim Walz's Son For Crying During DNC Speech. Newsweek. August 22, 2024.)

1. Having a neurodevelopmental disorder, especially autism spectrum disorder
2. Relating to or characteristic of people who have a neurodevelopmental disorder, especially autism spectrum disorder

The viewpoint according to which differences in behavior and cognition that are clinically associated with neurodevelopmental disorders are instead part of a continuum of neurodevelopmental diversity and not disordered.

northern lights

Millions of people in the U.S. as far south as Alabama could be in for another dazzling display of the Northern Lights on Sunday night as Earth continues to be blasted by a historic geomagnetic storm that hasn’t been experienced in decades.

The sky was filled with vibrant colors of green, pink and purple from the Northern Lights as far south as Florida and Texas on Friday night after a massive sunspot the width of 17 Earths spewed solar flares, leading to geomagnetic storm activity reaching Level 5 "extreme" conditions.
(Steven Yablonski. Another 'severe and extreme' geomagnetic storm Sunday could bring Northern Lights as far south as Alabama. FOX Weather. May 12, 2024.)

Northern Lights

aurora borealis

ちなみに南極に近い地域で見られるオーロラは、ラテン語でaurora australis(australisは南の、という意味)と言います。

noggin

The more you use your noggin at work, the better your memory and brain function will be later in life, according to a study published on Wednesday in Neurology, the medical journal of the American Academy of Neurology.

Researchers measured people’s cognitive stimulation while doing more manual tasks such as controlling equipment or factory work and compared it to the cognitive stimulation of people working in jobs where they had to analyze information and interpret it for other people.

The study found that people working jobs with the lowest demands had a 66% greater risk of mild cognitive impairment compared to those who worked jobs with higher cognitive demands.
(Alexandra Klausner. Here’s the job that will help keep you sharp later in life: study. New York Post. April 17, 2024.)

The more you use your noggin at work, the better your memory and brain function will be later in life

noggin

neopronoun

Jeopardy! has come under fire on social media over the inclusion of a clue regarding neopronouns during Monday's Tournament of Champions quarterfinal.

During the episode, contestant Cris Pannullo selected a category called "Speech! Parts of Speech!" for $600. He was then presented with the words "Xem, Xyrs, Xemself," to which he correctly responded: "What are pronouns?"

"Those are pronouns," host Ken Jennings responded. "Neopronouns."
(Ryan Smith. 'Jeopardy!' Is in Hot Water—'Never Watching Again'. Newsweek. February 28, 2024.)

Xem, Xyrs, Xemself

What are pronouns?

従って、"Xem, Xyrs, Xemself"という提示があって、"What are pronouns?"

What are pronouns?

What are neopronouns?

nanner

Enjoy your nanners while you can: Scientists warn that the most popular type of banana could be on the brink of extinction due to a disease outbreak that’s ravaging the potassium-filled fruit.
(Ben Cost. Bananas could go extinct due to fungus outbreak, scientists say. New York Post. October 24, 2023.)

nanner(s)

nana
narna
narner

Bohan had a split-second decision to make; should she put the kitten back down on the sidewalk, let it chart its own path, and chase down her personal record, or should she keep hold of the kitten, walk the course, and take the time to find it a safe place to land?

The kitten was in luck. Bohan is an animal lover with two rescue cats of her own back home in Boston. Better yet, she was running Sunday's marathon with TEAM PAWS Chicago — a group representing an animal welfare organization.

How could she not sacrifice her own race time for the benefit of a helpless little creature?

So Bohan nuzzled the kitten, which she estimated weighed less than a pound, into her chest and set off to find a kind bystander who would offer the cat a loving home. Along the way, she crossed paths with fellow animal lover and marathon runner Gia Nigro, who joined Bohan in searching for a kitty caretaker.

nugget

An Australian man armed with a budget metal detector has hit the jackpot, finding a 4.6kg rock containing gold worth A$240,000 (£130,000; $160,000).

The man, who doesn't want to be named, made the discovery in Victoria's goldfields - which were the heart of Australia's gold rush in the 1800s.

Darren Kamp, who valued and bought the specimen, said it is the biggest he's seen in his 43-year career.

"I was just gobsmacked... It's a once in a lifetime find," he told the BBC.
(Tiffanie Turnbull. Amateur Australian gold digger finds massive nugget. BBC News. March 28, 2023.)

a 4.6kg rock containing gold

nugget

nuggets of information
nuggets of wisdom
nuggets of advice

naughty bits

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) — A Florida charter school principal has been forced to resign after a parent complained sixth graders were exposed to pornography during a lesson on Renaissance art that included Michelangelo’s “David” sculpture.

The Tallahassee Democrat reported that the principal, Hope Carrasquilla, of Tallahassee Classical School resigned this week after an ultimatum from the school board’s chairman.
(Principal resigns after complaints on ‘David’ statue nudity. The Associated Press. March 25, 2023.)

Perhaps students, even in elementary school, know the difference between Renaissance art and porn — and if they don’t, maybe lessons like this will teach them that difference. The purpose here is to educate the children and, unfortunately, some facts sometimes make some people squeamish.

Sorry, but they’ll get over it.

But we’ll never see everyone agree in matters of taste. Many TV news reports picked up the Democrat’s story about Tallahassee Classical — but digitally blurred out the naught bits, or cropped photos of David so’s not to make anybody blush.
(Bill Cotterell. A David vs. Goliath clash of artistic taste and parental choice. Tallahassee Democrat. March 26, 2023.)

naughty bits (the)
the male or female genitalia.
A usage of adults with children which makes a number of unmerited assumptions and might even implant unfortunate inhibitions.

near miss

The near miss with eggs being thrown by a protester shows how vulnerable the King can be on such occasions.

King Charles has been a very accessible figure to crowds of well-wishers. He's been shaking hands, swapping jokes and literally become a hands-on monarch during his walkabouts.
(York: Student arrested after eggs thrown at King Charles. BBC News. November 9, 2022.)

A home security system has captured the terrifying moment a Melbourne toddler nearly ran afoul of a brown snake, forcing a mother to spring into action.

Daniella Vizzini noticed the venomous brown snake slithering through her Lalor backyard yesterday.

The reptile was metres away from two-year-old Eva who was splashing in the pool completely and utterly oblivious to the danger.
('Ready to strike her': Terrifying near miss in a Melbourne backyard. 9News. November 10, 2022.)

A video shows the king shaking hands with several people, when multiple eggs narrowly missed the king's face.
(Caroline Thayer. King Charles III and Camilla hurled with eggs, protester arrested. Fox News. November 9, 2022.)

a narrow victory
narrowly escaped

in the nick of time

A former cop rescued his disabled mother from her Florida home right in the nick of time after she decided not to evacuate ahead of Hurricane Ian.
(Elizabeth Pritchett. Former Chicago cop Johnny Lauder saves disabled mom from Hurricane Ian. Fox News. October 5, 2022.)

"in the nick of time"というのは、際どいタイミングで、とか、土壇場で、という意味の慣用句です。

nickel-and-diming

Google CEO Sundar Pichai reportedly grew agitated during a “heated” all-hands meeting in which an employee asked why the search engine was “nickel-and-diming” workers by taking away perks and benefits.

Pichai, who has ratcheted up the pressure on Googlers to boost productivity in the midst of a sharp economic downturn, held court at a meeting in New York this week during which he was grilled by his employees over cuts to travel and entertainment budgets.

One worker summoned the nerve to ask Pichai why Google was “nickel-and-diming employees” when the company reported “record profits and huge cash reserves,” according to audio obtained by CNBC.
(Ariel Zilber. Google employee grills CEO Sundar Pichai for ‘nickel-and-diming’ workers: report. New York Post.September 23, 2022.)

Carriers have done nickel-and-dime cost-cutting, removing hot towels and food service, but have yet to address much more serious costs, like labor inefficiencies.
(New York Times, 2002)
