NG ― politically correct

Political correctness is running amok at the University of New Hampshire — where a Bias-Free Language Guide identifies the word “American” as a “problematic” term that should be avoided because some might be offended.

Instead, students are asked to use the phrases “US citizen” or “resident of the US” so as not to assume that the US is the only country inside the two continents.

The guide was crafted by students and staffers two years ago, but exposed Tuesday by the news site Campus Reform.
(Chris Perez. University’s ‘language guide’ frowns upon the word ‘American.’ New York Post. July 29, 2015.)

rock the boat

Borith has been on the payroll of Cambodia's parliament for 15 years but rarely shows up for work. He is busy with his other job at a non-governmental organization, and no one notices his absence.

It's a cushy deal that's common in Cambodia. Ghost workers are haunting its civil service, sapping taxpayers' money with jobs they don't actually do, or by pocketing salaries paid to people who don't even exist.

Son Chhay, a lawmaker who grew up in Australia and is vice chairman of parliament's financial commission, is disgusted by the practice.

But he admits his campaign against wastefulness and nepotism is going nowhere without political will for a cleanup.

A recent truce between the two main rival political parties, he says, means no one wants to rock the boat, or risk losing votes by targeting civil servants before a 2018 election expected to be Cambodia's closest in decades.
(Paychecks aplenty as ghosts haunt Cambodia's lax bureaucracy. Reuters. Jul 23, 2015.)

don't rock the boat policy

rocket science

"It's not rocket science."

Grilling burgers isn’t rocket science, but if your grill’s emitting as much flame as an Apollo launch, odds are your patties are going to end up tasting like astronaut food.
(Dan Gentile. 13 Ways You're Grilling Burgers Wrong. Yahoo! Food. July 28, 2015.)

Collins Cobuild Dictionary of Idioms

You can use expressions such as 'it doesn't take a rocket scientist' to point out that doing a particular thing does not need much intelligence or skill, and is actually very easy or obvious. This expression is used mainly in American English, but is becoming more common in British English.
(Collins Cobuild Dictionary of Idioms)

tasseography

Twitter investor Chris Sacca is talking about Twitter again -- this time criticizing how the microblogging site is handling CEO Dick Costolo's departure from the company.

Longtime Twitter investor Chris Sacca said the microblogging site is giving mixed messages about its CEO transition.

Twitter's announcement last week that Costolo will step down July 1 to be replaced by co-founder Jack Dorsey as interim CEO was "sloppy and confusing," he said.

"Investors were left trying to interpret seemingly conflicting accounts and trying to read the tea leaves about where the company was going," Sacca wrote in a blog post Thursday, entitled "What Twitter Says, and What Investors Hear.
(Terry Collins. Twitter's CEO transition has been 'sloppy and confusing,' says investor. CNET. June 18, 2015.)

read the tea leaves

tasseography

elbow-bending

What a pleasure it is to bask in all this elbow-bending room with the welcome warmth from an open fire. Also to gaze out of the window at a low, wintry sun spilling gold on the undulating surface of the river while savouring a pint of London Pride in a proper glass, as opposed to the plastic variety available on match days.
(Chris Arnot. The White Swan, Twickenham, pub review. The Telegraph. February 6, 2015.)

― porta potty

Finding a marathoner with more experience than Doug Kurtis is like locating an unoccupied porta potty five minutes before the start of a big race--it's extremely rare, if not impossible. Kurtis, 62, a writer and race director from Livonia, Michigan, has run 205 marathons in the last 40 years, finishing 200 of those in less than three hours. His 200th sub-3:00, last October's Detroit Free Press Marathon, made him one of 33 people to beat that mark in five separate decades.
(10 Tips to Master the Marathon. Runner's World. July 18, 2015.)

porta potty

frat party

SAN FRANCISCO — Twitter has apologized for holding a frat house-themed party, which included a keg and a beer pong table emblazoned with the company logo, at its San Francisco headquarters.

A female Twitter employee brought attention to the happy-hour event by posting on Twitter an image that she then quickly deleted. But the photo had already been spotted by the Global Women in Tech Facebook group.
(Jessica Guynn. Twitter apologizes for 'ill chosen' frat house party. USA Today. July 22, 2015.)

wilt

Asian shares wilt in shadow of Wall Street's earnings woes

Asian stocks skidded on Wednesday after earnings dragged down U.S. equities, while the dollar edged away from highs hit earlier this week.

MSCI's broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan extended losses and was down about 1 percent.
(Reuters. July 21, 2015.)

About a week after eating 62 hot dogs in 10 minutes to win the Nathan’s Famous hot-dog-eating contest, Matt Stonie drove to a Hooters and bought some chicken wings — 200 of them. By dinnertime, he’d polished them off as part of his training regimen for the Hooters Worldwide Wing Eating Championship to be held Saturday in Clearwater, Fla.
(Josh Peter. Inside the disturbing dangers of competitive eating. USA Today. July 21, 2015.)

jaunt

WASHINGTON — President Obama is taking in some father-daughter bonding time in a rare jaunt to New York City without his wife, Michelle.

The weekend trip with daughters Malia, 17, and Sasha, 14, included dinner Friday night at the trendy Italian restaurant Carbone in Greenwich Village and an after-hours tour at the Whitney Museum of American Art.
(Geoff Earle. Obama hitting Broadway with daughters after $1M fund-raiser. New York Post. July 17, 2015.)

From the White House to the big house, President Obama made an unprecedented presidential visit to a federal prison Thursday as part of his push for changes to the criminal justice system.

The president, after issuing dozens of commutations and tackling the subject during an NAACP address earlier this week, toured the El Reno Federal Correctional Institution, a medium-security prison for male offenders near Oklahoma City.
(Obama makes 1st visit by sitting president to federal prison. Fox News. July 16, 2015.)

the big house

trail goes cold

Joaquin Guzman, a.k.a. "El Chapo," who escaped a maximum-security prison Saturday, could be gone forever if he isn't found soon, warns Michael Vigil, a retired U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration chief of international operations. An intense manhunt is underway to find him before his trail goes cold — and he regains command of the powerful, violent Sinaloa drug cartel.
(The Short List: Frantic search for Mexican drug lord; Greek bailout; Walmart vs. Amazon. USA Today. July 13, 2015.)

his trail goes cold

The trail has gone cold.

The New York State Police on Wednesday released computer-enhanced photos of the men, trying to estimate what they might look like after being on the run, and authorities insisted they would not relent in their hunt.
(New York Prison Break: Authorities Vow to Catch Killers as Trail Goes Cold. NBC News. June 17, 2015.)

DETROIT — A contract engineer is suing his employer, as well as Ford (F), for discrimination after losing an automotive design job because he posted comments criticizing the automaker's support of the gay community.

Thomas Banks of Ypsilanti, Mich., filed a federal lawsuit against Rapid Global Business Solutions, an engineering and employment service in Troy, and Ford, where he had been on assignment at a Dearborn plant for more than three years.

Banks, who identifies himself as a Christian, claims his civil rights were violated because he was fired Aug. 4, 2014, after speaking up in defense of his religious beliefs. He accused Ford of "endorsing and promoting sodomy."
(Alisa Piddle. Worker fired over anti-gay comments sues Ford. USA Today. July 14, 2015.)

sodomy

Grexit

grexit

Investors enjoying the afterglow of a putative deal that will keep Greece in the euro zone for now might not want to get too comfortable.

Even after conquering seemingly insurmountable odds to strike a bargain with European authorities, the debt-plagued nation's biggest challenges await.

Overcoming the political fallout from forced austerity and trying to generate the kind of economic growth that will make the deal's conditions sustainable present the very real possibility that a Greek exit, or "Grexit," from the euro zone remains an inevitability.

"The likelihood of short-term Grexit remains significant given the strong conditionality contained in the proposal," Citigroup analysts said in a note.
(Jeff Cox. Sorry, but Grexit chance is still 'significant.' CNBC. July 14, 2015.)

shoehorn

After years of financial struggles, the nation's airlines are now collecting hefty profits thanks in part to industrywide efforts to squeeze more seats into the economy section of most planes.

But if you thought airlines were finished trying to shoehorn more seats into each plane, think again.

One of the world's largest airline seat makers, Zodiac Seats France, has applied for a patent to reconfigure the seats on airplanes so that every other passenger in a row is facing toward the back of the plane.

That means that in a row of three fliers, the seat by the window and the seat by the aisle face toward the front of the plane while the middle seat faces toward the back.
(The 'evil' airline seat design that flips some seats backwards. Stuff.co.nz. July 13, 2015.)

shoehorn

rank and file

ASHLEY HALL: The Labor Party is facing a growing push-back from its rank-and-file members over climate policy.

More than 300 branches have endorsed a position for next month's national conference to force the party to set firm targets on emissions reductions and renewable energy generation.

And today several NGOs, including Oxfam, will begin a campaign to put even more pressure on the party, claiming Labor is becoming indistinguishable from the Liberals.
(Labor faces grass roots push to set firm climate targets. ABC News. July 9, 2015.)

Merriam Webster

the enlisted personnel of an armed force
the individuals who constitute the body of an organization, society, or nation as distinguished from the leaders

― hikikomori

hikikomori

It's the social and health crisis plaguing almost one million Japanese people.

The sufferers of 'Hikikomori' – mostly young men - have such severe social withdrawal they isolate themselves in their bedroom, in some cases for years.

One of the few hikikomori experts in Japan, Dr Takahiro Kato, suffered from the condition as a student and is now working to prevent it from having a widespread affect on the next generation, ABC's 7.30 reported.
(Pictured: Sufferers of the bizarre condition causing almost a million Japanese men to lock themselves inside for YEARS, surfing the internet and reading manga. Daily Mail. July 8, 2015.)

Oxford Dictionary

(In Japan) the abnormal avoidance of social contact, typically by adolescent males.
A person who avoids social contact.

pitchman

Subway Suspends Spokesman Jared Fogle After Child Porn Raid

Subway suspended pitchman Jared Fogle on Tuesday after authorities raided his Indiana home in a child pornography investigation earlier that morning.
(Huffington Post. July 7, 2015.)

pitchman

A form of words used when trying to persuade someone to buy or accept something

― break the seal

Ever think about what happens when you “break the seal” during a night of drinking?

Of course you’re going to get the urge to pee after you’ve thrown back a few beers. But all it takes is one whiz to open up the floodgates, and before you know it, you’re returning to the bar bathroom every 20 minutes.

The reason you can’t stop yourself after that first pee is because the relief of urinating sends feel-good signals to your brain, says Judd W. Moul, M.D., F.A.C.S., Director of the Duke Prostate Center Division of Urologic Surgery.
(Jada Green. Why you should never hold your pee. New York Post. July 5, 2015.)

If you hold it in to avoid public restrooms, for example, you could be more likely to develop long-term urinary tract symptoms like frequent and painful urination.

Breaking the seal doesn’t sound so bad now.
(ibid.)

BBC News

It’s around the third beer when it hits you. Your bladder feels full and you gotta go -- like, now. You head to the restroom, and as you leave, your friend jokes that you're risking "breaking the seal": You urinate once while drinking and after that, you’ll have to get up every five minutes to pee.

It's an urban myth that even urologists wonder about, as it turns out.
(A happy hour urban myth: Is 'breaking the seal' a real thing? BBC News. January 18, 2013.)

bloatware

Too little, too late: Samsung, starting with the latest released Galaxy S6 series, moved to its mobile devices' user interfaces by scaling back bloatware, but now the manufacturer and its pre-installation practices are the subject of a legal action launched by a consumer protection group in China.

Bloatware, also known as PUPs (Potentially Unwanted Programs), typically arrives pre-installed on hardware and is often difficult to remove.

The Shanghai Consumer Rights Protection Commission filed public interest lawsuit against Samsung and Oppo, accusing both companies, in separate cases, of preinstalling PUP. The commission studied 20 smartphones and concluded that many of the apps on the devices couldn't be removed.
(Quinten Plummer. Samsung, Oppo Face Legal Flak In China Over Smartphone Bloatware. Tech Times. July 5, 2015.)

記事中にも定義らしき記述がみられますが、別名PUP(Potentially Unwanted Programs)、要は不要なプログラムのことを言うようです。

flail

A group of runners in Chicago saved a man from drowning in Lake Michigan on Tuesday morning, according to a report from the Chicago Tribune.

John Corba, 43, was running on the Chicago Lakefront Trail, a popular training route, when he eyed the man flailing in the water.

Corba noticed a paddleboard rental shop near the beach, so he ran in and asked an attendant to borrow a board.

Two other runners jumped into the lake to help, according to the Tribune. “Corba quickly began paddling out to the struggling man, and all three propped the man on the board and brought him to safety,” the article said.
(Kit Fox. Chicago Runners Save Drowning Man. Runnersworld. July 2, 2015.)

the man flailing in the water

to wave the arms or legs wildly

Few artists are giving the full-length album the thought it deserves these days, adding even more confusion to a flailing music industry that was worth just $10 billion in 2008 - down from $14 billion in 2000.
(Denver Post. 2009.)

The creators use them to describe forces that shaped their lives, to underscore love or admit regret, to pass along life lessons, anecdotes and other treasures immune to a flailing economy and market conditions.

perfect storm

A shark bit a man swimming off the North Carolina coast Wednesday, marking the state's seventh shark attack in recent weeks and raising the question: Why does this keep happening?

Wednesday's attack took place off North Carolina's Ocracoke Island, according to the National Park Service. A 68-year-old man was swimming about 30 feet offshore in waist-deep water when he was attacked, the park service said. It said he received injuries to his left lower torso and hip, lower left leg and both hands.

George Burgess, director of the Florida Program for Shark Research, said the string of attacks off North Carolina was the result of “a perfect storm of conditions, not all of which we know yet.”

Contributing factors are believed to include hot weather that is raising the water temperature, the presence of more ocean prey in the area and a localized drought, he said. The drought means the water is not getting diluted. Sharks like warm, salty water the most, he said.

the result of a perfect storm of conditions

a storm of criticism(批判の殺到)
a storm of questions(質問の連発)
a storm of applause(拍手喝采の嵐)

A “perfect storm” of conflict and the breakdown of state healthcare have left swathes of Isis-occupied Syria and Iraq vulnerable to outbreaks of infectious disease, America’s new science envoy to the Middle East has warned.
(Washington warns 'perfect storm' of conditions leaves Isis-controlled Iraq and Syria vulnerable to outbreaks of infectious disease. The Independent. July 2, 2015.)

a critical or disastrous situation created by a powerful concurrence of factors

immersive

Facebook users will one day be able to send messages and posts telepathically, according to founder Mark Zuckerberg.

The social network's chief executive said the "ultimate communication technology" would enable people to send thoughts directly to each other.

"One day, I believe we'll be able to send full rich thoughts to each other directly using technology. You'll just be able to think of something and your friends will immediately be able to experience it too, if you'd like. This would be the ultimate communication technology," he said.

"First, people are gaining the power to share in richer and richer ways. We used to just share in text, and now we post mainly with photos. In the future video will be even more important than photos. After that, immersive experiences like virtual reality will become the norm. And after that, we'll have the power to share our full sensory and emotional experience with people whenever we'd like.
(Andrew Trotman. The future of Facebook is telepathy, reveals Mark Zuckerberg. The Telegrah. July 1, 2015.)

immersive experiences

immersive experiences
