jailbreak

Apple’s iOS platform doesn’t support very many customization options in terms of the appearance of the user interface. Apple loves nothing more than simplicity and consistency, so it doesn’t support any kind of themes on the iPhone or iPad. Android, meanwhile, lets the user manipulate the UI in any number of ways. You can even install a third-party launcher and change everything about your phone’s interface.

On the iPhone…you can change the wallpaper.

Users looking for a bit more freedom often jailbreak their phones, which allows them to install third-party apps with far more capability than the apps in Apple’s official App Store. This way, they can install theming apps that can change an iPhone’s layout, icons and more. But now, thanks to a glitch discovered by YouTube user “videosdebarraquito” (via Cult of Mac), anyone can give their iPhone or iPad a quick visual overhaul in just a few seconds.
(Kind of hate how your iPhone looks? There’s a way around that. New York Post. April28, 2016.)

jailbreak

In electronics: to enable use of a consumer electronics product not intended by the manufacturer through the exploitation of software hacks.
(Urban Dictionary)

FOMO

Merriam-Webster Dictionary

FOMO

Fear of missing out

George Quiney, 24, from London: “Social media is definitely a double-edged sword - I can't count the times that I've seen a friend's post on Instagram and had a serious case of FOMO [fear of missing out], thinking what a great time they're having. When it comes to my own social media, I definitely like to project an image that might not quite fit with the truth. No wonder people are feeling pressure to post bigger and better on social media, it's the new game of life.
(Jonathan Owen. FOMO leaves users depressed. Independent. April 7, 2016.)

juggernaut

Apple Inc on Tuesday posted its first-ever decline in iPhone sales and its first revenue drop in 13 years as the company credited with inventing the smartphone struggles with an increasingly saturated market.

The company's sales dropped by more than a quarter in China, its most important market after the United States, and it also forecast another disappointing quarter for global revenues.
(Apple's nine-year iPhone juggernaut stops with first sales decline. Reuters. April 27, 2016.)

Juggernaut

Washington (CNN) — Ted Cruz and John Kasich are sudden allies -- but they're not friends.

The Texas senator and Ohio governor roiled the Republican presidential primary late Sunday with a coordinated effort to deny Donald Trump the nomination by dividing upcoming contests. Cruz will focus on Indiana, the campaign said, while Kasich would devote his efforts to Oregon and New Mexico.
(Ted Cruz and John Kasich: 2016 frenemies. CNN. April 26, 2016.)

Trump, meanwhile, blasted the entire arrangement as "pathetic" and emblematic of the corrupt political system he's trying to disrupt.

"If you collude in business ... they put you in jail. But in politics ... you're allowed to collude," he said.
(ibid.)

To act together, often in secret, to achieve an illegal or improper purpose
(American Heritage Dictionary)

allude
delude
elude
interlude
prelude

whisperer

The Florida zookeeper who was mauled to death by a Tiger violated zoo policy.

Andrew Aiken, the Palm Beach Zoo president and chief executive said Stacey Konwiser, known as “the tiger whisperer” entered a part of the tiger enclosure which the animal had access to in violation of policy, according to a statement released on Friday.
(Carmine Sabia. ‘Tiger whisperer’ killed by deadly animal violated zoo policy, put herself in danger. BizPac Review. April 24, 2016.)

tiger whisperer

a person who excels at calming or training hard-to-manage animals using noncoercive methods based especially on an understanding of the animals' natural instincts

dog whisperer
horse whisperer

nomophobia

PRETORIA: South Africa has been hit by a new wave of addiction – in this instance a failure to be separated from a smartphone.

There is even a word for it: nomophobia, coined from a term, no-mobile-phone-phobia. It is a psychological syndrome in which a person is afraid of being out of cellphone contact.

And according to experts, cellphone addiction merited inclusion in substance and behavioural addiction, like gambling disorder.
(Cellphone addiction phobias increasing. Independent Online. April 18, 2016.)

no-mobile-phone-phobia

praise and pans

The new 12-inch MacBook was introduced in the spring of 2015 to both praise and pans. It is the first rethink of the MacBook in years, with a tablet-like weight of just two pounds, just one connector, and a novel keyboard with larger, ultra-thin keys. It’s also the first thin MacBook to get a high-resolution Retina display – something the MacBook Air is still lacking.

(Brooke Crothers. Apple updates MacBook with new internals. Fox News. April 20, 2016.)

praise and pans

TUESDAY, April 19, 2016 (HealthDay News) -- Straight parents or same-sex parents -- what's the difference to kids' well-being?

Nothing, as long as the parents have a stable relationship, new research finds.

Matching 95 same-sex and 95 different-sex parent households, researchers found that children raised by homosexual parents showed no differences in general health, emotional difficulties, coping or learning behavior compared to children of heterosexual parents.
(More Evidence Gay Parents Raise Well-Adjusted Kids. Philly.com. April 19, 2016.)

heterosexual

whisper

Putting clock-radio-style numbers on your skin might not seem all that desirable. But these flashing digits are the proof of concept for a new electronic skin. In theory, "e-skins" like the one described Friday in Science Advances could be used for everything from monitoring vital signs to making wearable electronics a whole lot more wearable.

Lots of researchers are working on "smart skins." The idea is to package electronic sensors into a super-thin, super-flexible material — so thin and flexible that the user could wear it like a temporary tattoo. Recently, one research group even made a functional smart skin out of office supplies, such as Post-it notes and foil, showing that the whisper-thin electronic sensors need not be made from expensive materials.
(Rachel Feltman. This electronic tattoo turns your skin into a screen. The Washington Post. April 18, 2016.)

super-thin
ultra-thin

whisper-thin

shrapnel

A 14-year-old from New York has been left with permanent injuries after an electronic cigarette he was holding exploded in his face, despite the fact that he was under the legal age to be provided with such a device. An electronic cigarette store and a prominent Brooklyn shopping mall are now facing a lawsuit, following the incident that cost the boy the sight in one of his eyes.

“I was shocked. I was bleeding out of my nose,” said Leor Domatov.

The force of the explosion blasted shrapnel into the teenager’s face, causing devastating damage to his eye.
(E-Cigarette Explosion Inflicts Horrific Injuries on New York Teen.Modern Readers. April 17, 2016.)

bib

Dozens Suspected of Cheating to Enter Boston Marathon

Investigation of 2015 race reveals bib swappers, bib mules, and course cutters.

Most runners get into the Boston Marathon in one of two ways: Meet strict qualifying standards or raise thousands of dollars for charity.

But some choose a third option. They cheat.
(Kit Fox. Dozens Suspected of Cheating to Enter Boston Marathon. Runner's World. April 13, 2016.)

bib swappers
bib mules
course cutters

A judge in central China ruled against a gay couple in China’s first-ever same-sex marriage case Wednesday, effectively hobbling a case that has electrified the country’s lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender activists.

The plaintiff, Sun Wenlin, a 27-year-old Hunan native, sued a civil affairs bureau in Changsha, the capital of central China's Hunan province, for refusing him the right to marry his 37-year-old boyfriend, Hu Mingliang, last June.

The Changsha Furong District People's Court agreed to hear the case earlier this year, sparking a flurry of sympathetic coverage in China’s staid state-run media and galvanizing the country’s nascent gay rights movement.
(Jonathan Kaiman. Judge rules against China's first-ever same-sex marriage case. Los Angeles Times. April 13, 2016.)

effectively hobbling a case

elbow grease

"Saved by the Bell" actor Dustin Diamond sprung from jail a month early thanks to a little elbow grease and the loads of laundry he did while serving time for a bar altercation.

The former teen star was released from jail on Monday after serving nearly three months in his four-month sentence for stabbing a man during a bar fight in Wisconsin bar, WITI reported.
(Malanie Dostis. ‘Saved by the Bell’ actor Dustin Diamond released from jail a month early. New York Daily News. April 11, 2016.)

thanks to a little elbow grease and...

HIROSHIMA, Japan — Secretary of State John F. Kerry paid an emotional visit Monday to a museum and marker near ground zero in the city where the United States dropped an atomic bomb in the waning days of World War II.

Kerry and his fellow foreign ministers from six other powerful democracies first toured the Hiroshima Peace Memorial museum, where exhibits display the aftermath of the bomb nicknamed “Little Boy” — from charred tricycles and melted roof tiles to cancerous tongues and models of people with melting skin.

Then they walked solemnly to lay wreaths of white and pink carnations at a cenotaph that frames an eternal flame and the skeletal ruins of the one, dome-shaped building left standing.
(Carol Morello. Kerry visits memorial near ground zero in Hiroshima. The Washington Post. April 11, 2016.)

cenotaph

Merriam-Webster Dictionary

a tomb or a monument erected in honor of a person or group of persons whose remains are elsewhere

SAN DIEGO — A thief who posed as a guest at California weddings and stole wallets, credit cards and cash from brides, guests and wedding workers will be honeymooning in prison.

KNSD-TV says Denise Gunderson was sentenced Wednesday to seven years behind bars. She has previous felony convictions.

Prosecutors say last year, Gunderson showed up at several San Diego County weddings, went into rooms and offices and stole valuables during the ceremonies.
(Wedding crasher sent to prison for stealing from brides, guests. New York Post. April 7, 2016.)

wedding crasher

Prohibition

We admit it. Some food holidays aren’t worth celebrating.

But National Beer Day isn’t just a randomly chosen date—it actually marks a historic occasion: the end of Prohibition in the U.S.

On April 7, 1933, people were once again allowed to buy, brew and sell beer after 13 long, dry years.
(Booze deals and brew facts: How to celebrate National Beer Day. Fox News. April 7, 2016.)

Iceland's Prime Minister Sigmundur David Gunnlaugsson resigned on Tuesday, becoming the first casualty of leaked documents from a Panamanian law firm which have shone a spotlight on the offshore wealth of politicians and public figures worldwide.

The Panama Papers showed the premier's wife owned an offshore company with big claims on Iceland's banks, a undeclared conflict of interest for Gunnlaugsson, infuriating many who hurled eggs and bananas in street protests calling for him to step down.
(Iceland's leader resigns, first casualty of Panama Papers. Reuters. April 5, 2016.)

tax haven

It hasn’t been a good spell for Marco Rubio, who managed to botch the name of the United States in a letter.

The senator from Florida, who bowed out of the Republican presidential race after his home state primary, sent a letter asking the Alaska GOP not to release his pledged delegates before the national convention.

His missive to GOP Chairman Peter Goldberg contained an awkward faux pas – he referred to the 172 delegates he won while running for the highest office in the “Untied States.”
(Yaron Steinbuch. Rubio won’t be president of the United States and he can’t spell it either. New York Post. March 30, 2016.)

Untied States

cover one's tracks

I never admitted to myself I had a problem. I married my boyfriend in 2010 and I’d cover my tracks by hiding the empty bottles in my closet. My husband, a photographer, worked mostly nights, so our schedules were rarely in sync.
(Jane Ridley. A drunk blog post saved my life. New York Post. March 31, 2016.)

It's difficult to know precisely how much cyber espionage by Russia had gone undetected in the past? Russian hackers have gone to great lengths to cover their tracks, unlike their counterparts in China, who have generally been easier to detect, said Alan Paller, a cyber security expert at the SANS Institute.
(Pittsburg Post-Gazette. 2014.)

Last week, the GOP frontrunner revealed he’d be happy if more U.S.-friendly countries obtained nuclear weapons. In response, The “Last Week Tonight” host said Trump just wasn’t informed enough when it came to discussing such serious and often highly delicate matters.

Oliver played a clip from the billionaire businessman’s CNN town hall with Anderson Cooper in which Trump said we’d all be “better off if Japan protects itself against this maniac in North Korea.”

Adding it’d be preferable if South Korea could also defend itself, Trump said he’d be happy for Saudi Arabia to have nuclear weapons.

“[He] doesn’t know much about foreign policy, or nuclear policy, or the Korean Peninsula, or the world generally,” Obama said.

birdbrain(ed)

wing it

“What should the law be on abortion?” asked MSNBC’s Chris Matthews to Donald Trump at a town hall event in Wisconsin.

“Should the woman be punished for having an abortion?” Matthews pressed. “This is not something you can dodge.”
(Jill Colvin. Trump’s abortion flub shows risks of ‘winging it’ on policy. The Washington Post. March 31, 2016.)

“Should the woman be punished for having an abortion?”

Trump’s bungled response — an awkward, extended attempt to evade the question, followed by an answer that, yes, “there has to be some form of punishment” — prompted a backlash that managed to unite abortion rights activists and opponents. And it also brought an unprecedented reversal from the notoriously unapologetic candidate less than a week before Wisconsin’s important primary.

The episode demonstrated the extent to which Trump has glossed over the rigorous policy preparation that is fundamental to most presidential campaigns, underscoring the risks of the billionaire businessman’s winging-it approach as he inches closer to the Republican nomination.
