A North Korean firing squad last week executed a former girlfriend of leader Kim Jong-un and 11 other entertainers for allegedly violating laws banning pornography - at least according to a South Korean newspaper.

The report by Chosun Ilbo, an English-language newspaper of a Seoul media conglomerate, published on Thursday deemed the reported August 20 executions a death blow to expectations that Mr Kim would oversee a transition of his isolated and tyrannised people into a more open era.

Like many stories out of the Hermit Kingdom, the reports remain unconfirmed and are based on unnamed sources.
(Carol J. Williams. Kim Jong-un, North Korean leader, reportedly has ex-girlfriend, 11 others executed. The Sydney Morning Herald. August 30, 2013.)

the Hermit Kingdom

Obama makes case for punishing Syria, but possible delays loom

(Reuters) - President Barack Obama made the case on Wednesday for a limited military strike against Syria in response to last week's chemical weapons attack even as he faced new obstacles with British allies and U.S. lawmakers that could delay any imminent action.
(Obama makes case for punishing Syria, but possible delays loom. Reuters. August 28, 2013.)

make out one's case

U.S. House of Representatives Speaker John Boehner urged Obama on Wednesday to make the case personally to Congress and the American people for potential military action in Syria.
(ibid.)

目的語は、"punishing Syria"、"military strike (against Syria)"、"military action (in Syria)"などであり、いずれも武力行使のことを指しています。

make a case for something

to explain why something should be done
Usage notes: also used in the form make a case that (to explain that something is true)
(Cambridge Dictionary of American Idioms)

make (out) a case for something/doing something

to give good reasons why something should be done
(Cambridge Idioms Dictionary)

make a case for sth (UK also make out a case for sth)
to argue that something is the best thing to do, giving your reasons
(Cambridge Advanced Learner's Dictionary & Thesaurus)

イギリス英語では、"make out a case for..."

― revenge porn

Revenge Porn Could Soon Be Illegal In California

“I never thought that this person would have done this to me,” said an anonymous woman to WGN Chicago. "I thought he was the one that I was going to end up marrying."

The woman was a victim of "revenge porn"--the practice of posting nude or graphic content of a person online without his or her consent. During a relationship, she sent private, explicit photos to her boyfriend. But after a rocky breakup, he posted them online. Now, she can't escape them.

On Tuesday, the California State Assembly debated Senate Bill 255, which would make revenge porn a misdemeanor, punishable by up to a year in prison and a $2,000 fine. The bill cleared the Senate by a 37-1 earlier this summer.
(Robin Wilkey. Revenge Porn Could Soon Be Illegal In California. The Haffington Post. August 27, 2013.)

McDonald's is moving off the sidelines and into the chicken-wing business, with a limited-time roll-out of Mighty Wings planned next month.

McDonald's is set to hatch a fast-food menu item in a fast-growing category it wants to own: chicken wings.

The world's biggest fast-food chain plans a limited-time roll-out of its "Mighty Wings" starting Sept. 9 — with a nationwide roll-out to be complete by Sept. 24, says Leslie Truelove, director of marketing at McDonald's USA.
(Bruce Horovitz. 'Mighty Wings' landing at McDonald's. USA Today. August 26, 2013.)

"moving off the sidelines"の意味するところは、傍観者的立場、外野(sideline)から外れる、ということですが、つまりは傍観者ではなく実際にゲーム(試合)に参加するということであり、その“ゲーム(試合)”とは続く"into the chicken-wing business"で説明されているものです。

"(moving) off the sidelines"はほとんど成句になっていると思われます。

Investors came off the sidelines to buy stocks that have languished in five turbulent sessions. The Dow made back about 26 percent of the ground it lost over the past week, and scored its highest one-day point gain since July 24.
(Associated Press. 2007.)

Addressing the crowd, Hamas spokesman Mushir Mushri (ph) called on Arab and Islamic leaders to get off the sidelines and join the fight against Israel or face the anger of their people. But while Gaza's streets are noisy, its front lines have gone quiet.

― mompreneur

mompreneur

Juggling family and career themselves, these women created products and services to ease the stress in our everyday lives.

Motherhood has been described as a juggling act but sometimes feels more like a three-ring circus. Here are five "mompreneurs" who have created products and services to ease the stress in our everyday lives.
(Stephanie Anderson Witmer. Meet 5 'mompreneurs' whose businesses help others. USA Today. August 24, 2013.)

SEOUL (AFP) – News that Samsung will unveil a "smartwatch" next month has sent rumour mills into overdrive within the tech community as it second guesses what the much-hyped gadget will offer.

Wearable computing, including Google's smart glasses, is considered the next frontier in consumer electronics following smartphones.

Apple has long been rumoured to be working on introducing an "iWatch" and Samsung is reportedly looking to steal a march on its arch rival by launching its "Galaxy Gear" smartwatch at the IFA industrial exhibition in Berlin in the first week of September.

Samsung has steadfastly declined to confirm or deny its intentions and has offered no insights on the design or technical specifications of the new digital device.
(Tech experts debate the smarts of the 'smartwatch.' Fox News. August 21, 2013.)

Merriam Webster Dictionaryでは、

to gain an advantage on unobserved

To get ahead of, especially by quiet enterprise

― slosh

An Italian astronaut who nearly drowned in his helmet during a spacewalk has told of how he felt all alone and frantically tried to come up with a plan to save himself.

Luca Parmitano described how he was unable to see as the water sloshed around in his helmet during a spacewalk outside the International Space Station.

"But worse than that, the water covers my nose - a really awful sensation that I make worse by my vain attempts to move the water by shaking my head," the former test pilot wrote.
"By now, the upper part of the helmet is full of water and I can't even be sure that the next time I breathe, I will fill my lungs with air, and not liquid."
(Drowning in space: astronaut tells of spacewalk terror. The Sydney Morning Herald. August 21, 2013.)

Number 10

Scotland Yard

British tongues are atwitter after Scotland Yard announced over the weekend that police are giving the death of Princess Diana and her car companion Dodi al Fayed a second look, and taking seriously suggestions that the pair was not killed in an accidental crash but rather by special forces sent on a murder mission.
(Cheryl K. Chumely. Scotland Yard launches new look at Princess Diana’s death. The Washington Times. August 19, 2013.)

Number 10 was involved in discussions with the Guardian about material it had obtained from American whistle-blower Edward Snowden, it has emerged.

Prime Minister David Cameron ordered Britain's top civil servant Sir Jeremy Heywood to contact the newspaper.
(No 10 contacted Guardian over Edward Snowden secrets. BBC News. August 21, 2013.)

No 10

CUPERTINO -- The Apple (AAPL) iPhone rumor mill churned out a tantalizing new tidbit Monday with speculation that Apple will announce a gold-colored iPhone next month that would appeal to the Chinese smartphone market.

Analysts and tech bloggers have been speculating for weeks that Apple will announce an updated iPhone 5, possibly to be called an iPhone 5S or maybe even an iPhone 6, on Sept. 10, along with a lower-cost iPhone to appeal to developing markets.
(Dan Nakaso. Apple rumored to produce gold-colored iPhone for Chinese market. San Jose Mercury News. August 19, 2013.)

diploma mill(学生を呼び込むためいい加減な成績でも学位を授与する三流大学)
divorce mill(離婚者を大量生産する、離婚調停の条件が緩い裁判所)

crunch

Teachers battle budget crunch with their own money

(略)

"I only have $100 from the school for the whole year to buy supplies, and it's not enough," Martin said.

"I do the babysitting to help get money to buy toys and books," said the North Carolina native. "I even had to buy shelves and a stool for the kids to stand on to wash their hands at the sink. I spent about $500 on supplies last year, and It definitely hurts my own pocketbook."

With school budgets across the country slashed, Martin is part of a growing number of teachers spending more of their own money for school supplies, according to a recent survey from insurance firm Horace Mann, which focuses on products for educators.
(Mark Koba. Teachers battle budget crunch with their own money. USA Today. August 18, 2013.)

(5) ― avocado

(4) ― penthouse

語源的にはラテン語のappendere(今日、英単語のappendixなどにもなっています)に遡ります。

(3) ― mushroom

(2) ― kickshaw

In March or April one might have' a dish of Pease', but otherwise potatoes were the sole representative of the vegetable world. May and Rabisha both also included the smaller 'made dishes' in the French style, often referred to as 'kickshaws' from the French quelque chose (literally 'something', meaning a trifle).
(Anita Guerrini. History Today. 2011.)

撒(ま)く ― give...the slip

give...the slip

MOSCOW — It’s anyone’s guess where Edward Snowden was going when he gave reporters the slip and sped away from Moscow’s Sheremetyevo airport in a taxi last week.

After 39 days marooned in the no-man’s land of the airport transit lounge, the fugitive former National Security Agency contractor has won temporary asylum in Russia.
(Isabel Gorst. A guide to Russia for Edward Snowden. The Washington Post. August 6, 2013.)

floor it

A Queens woman arguing with her much-younger hubby zoomed off in her SUV yesterday — with her spouse clinging to the hood — and went on a wild, 11-block high-speed ride before crashing and killing him, cops and witnesses said.

"He was screaming, 'Stop the car!' " a law-enforcement source said — but that only made suspect Maria Espinosa, 51, allegedly floor it, hitting speeds up to 80 mph.

Espinosa was later charged with murder in the death of her husband, Matthew Soria, 34, law-enforcement sources told The Post.

Cops said the troubled couple had been arguing over money.
(Wife floored it with hubby on SUV hood before crashing and killing him after nasty fight over money: cops. New York Post. August 5, 2013.)

It is one of the frustrations of the internet: trying to read those distorted letter puzzles that appear when signing up for an email account or web service.

Now, consumer groups are calling to abolish those blurry - and often illegible - words known as CAPTCHA (Completely Automated Public Turing test to tell Computers and Humans Apart), which are supposed to be easy for humans to read, but difficult for computers.

The official web standards body, the World Wide Web Consortium, said there are many CAPTCHA alternatives, including simple maths questions, trivia, the use of sound files and even biometric technology such as fingerprints and retinal scanning. Microsoft have launched a substitute called Asirra (Animal Species Image Recognition for Restricting Access), that asks users to identify photos of cats and dogs instead of letters.

Asirra - which uses more than three million photos of cats and dogs - could be a simpler system as computers find it more difficult to recognise images rather than text.
(Lucy Caroll. Bid to kill CAPTCHA security test gains momentum. The Sydney Morning Herald. August 5, 2013.)

Bird poop for beauty?

That's what goes into facials at a luxury spa where the traditional Japanese treatment using imported Asian nightingale excrement mixed with rice bran goes for $180 a pop.

About 100 women and men go into the Shizuka New York skin care salon, just off Manhattan's Fifth Avenue, each month to get the treatment, which is promoted as a way to keep the face soft and smooth using an enzyme in the poop to gently exfoliate the skin.
(Newest facial craze sweeping New York? Bird poop. New York Post. August 2, 2013.)

underwhelm

Now, a year after the introduction of the first Nexus 7, Google has unveiled a revamped version of its mini tablet with better features and a slightly bigger $229 price tag.

So what's not to like about the new Nexus 7? For one thing, its 7-inch screen isn't as big as the nearly 8-inch iPad Mini's.(中略)

Another drawback: In my test, the new Nexus 7's battery life was underwhelming. Compared with the same battery test of the iPad Mini and first Nexus 7, it fell short at just six hours; the others clocked in at 10 hours and 27 minutes and 10 hours and 44 minutes, respectively.
(Katherine Boehret. Google’s New Nexus 7: The Budget Tablet to Beat. The Wall Street Journal. July 30, 2013.)

今日取り上げたいのは、"underwhelm(ing)"という単語です。

TOKYO — Japan's finance minister on Thursday publicly retracted comments he made this week that appeared to call on Japan's current conservative government to emulate Hitler’s takeover of prewar Germany. The gaffe underscored the potential for disputes over Japan’s own wartime history to derail its popular prime minister, Shinzo Abe.

The finance minister, Taro Aso, insisted that his comments on Monday, in which he seemed to say that Japan should learn how the Nazi party quietly rewrote Germany’s Constitution, were taken out of context. Faced with growing criticism in Japan and abroad, he countered that he had never meant to praise the Nazis. He said he had hoped to prompt debate in Japan over whether to change its current pacifist Constitution to allow a full-fledged military, as many conservatives now seek.
(Martin Fackler. Japan’s Finance Minister Retracts Statement on Nazis. The New York Times. August 1, 2013.)

You have misinterpreted my remark because you took it out of context.

30 years later and our word processing software hasn’t evolved, not even to adapt to mobile. That changes tonight with the launch of Quip, a freemium new word processing app from former Facebook CTO Bret Taylor’s new startup. Quip works on desktop but is designed for mobile. It automatically formats documents to the size of your screen, offers in-app collaboration and messaging, and even works offline.
(Josh Constine. Quip Is A Beautiful New Mobile-First Word Processor From Ex-Facebook CTO Bret Taylor. Techcrunch. July 30, 2013.)

a freemium new word processing app

A freemium app or game is a business model where the application is given away for free, but the customer can spend money on various enhancements to the game. It has become a popular model on both smartphones and tablets like the iPad as well as becoming a prevailing feature among social games. In recent years, the freemium model has also invaded massively multiplayer online role-playing games (MMORPGs), with games like Everquest 2 and Lord of the Rings Online going free-to-play under the freemium model.

Freemium is a combination of the words "free" and "premium".
(http://ipad.about.com/od/iPad-Glossary/a/What-Is-Freemium.htm

英単語の"premium"を改めて確認すると、割増金(a sum over and above a regular price paid chiefly as an inducement or incentive)という意味があることが分かります。
