diva demand

Cuomo-Nixon debate: Can a room temperature really be sexist?

Can a room temperature be sexist?

The question may sound bizarre, but it's taken off on social media ahead of a debate between New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, who is seeking a third term, and Sex and the City actress Cynthia Nixon - his challenger for the Democratic nomination.

Ms Nixon has one chance to go head-to-head with Mr Cuomo, and her team fear she could be disadvantaged by freezing temperatures at the venue.

So is it just a diva demand, or part of a wider problem where women are left chilly in the workplace?

Here's how the heated discussion got started...
(Cuomo-Nixon debate: Can a room temperature really be sexist? BBC News. August 30, 2018.)

One who demands that attention be paid to his or her needs, especially without regard to anyone else's needs or feelings.

Democratic and Republican governors from around the country have ordered flags lowered to half-staff in remembrance of the late Arizona Sen. John McCain, many before the White House ultimately relented in the face of criticism following the decision to raise the flag less than 48 hours after McCain's passing.

Ohio's Republican Gov. John Kasich, a primary opponent of Donald Trump during the 2016 presidential election, tweeted Monday on the decision to raise the flags at the White House to full staff, calling it "Shameful."

"In honor of the life and service of U.S. Senator John McCain, I hereby proclaim, by the authority vested in me as Governor of the State of Ohio by the Ohio Constitution and the laws of the United States of America, that the flags of the United States of America and the State of Ohio shall be flown at half-staff upon all public buildings and grounds throughout the state of Ohio, effective immediately through the day of interment," read an order released by Kasich Monday.
(John Verhovek. Bipartisan group of governors orders flags at half-staff through McCain's burial. ABC News. August 27, 2018.)

interment

Shunned at two funerals and one (royal) wedding so far, President Trump may be well on his way to becoming president non grata.

The latest snub comes in the form of the upcoming funeral for Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.), which, before his death, the senator made clear he did not want the sitting president to attend. That the feeling is mutual — Trump nixed issuing a statement that praised McCain as a “hero” — only underscores the myriad ways Trump has rejected the norms of his office and, increasingly, has been rejected in turn.

Less than two years into his first term, Trump has often come to occupy the role of pariah — both unwelcome and unwilling to perform the basic rituals and ceremonies of the presidency, from public displays of mourning to cultural ceremonies.

Trump’s conspicuous absences at McCain’s and Barbara Bush’s funerals offer perhaps the starkest examples of the ways in which Trump finds himself ostracized from some of the duties other presidents performed as almost de facto aspects of their job.
(Ashley Parker. President non grata: Trump often unwelcome and unwilling to perform basic rituals of the office. The Washington Post. August 28, 2018.)

ostracize

putsch

Malcolm Turnbull, Australia’s prime minister, signalled he could resign on Friday following bitter infighting that has split the ruling Liberal party and left the nation facing yet another leadership change.

As the party’s brutal civil war continued and thirteen ministers resigned, Mr Turnbull, a former investment banker and self-made millionaire, said he would resign if a majority of Liberal MPs demanded another leadership vote.

Stubbornly refusing to resign despite a collapse of support, Mr Turnbull blamed a group of rebel right-wing MPs and some media commentators for encouraging this week’s putsch.

“Australians will be rightly appalled by what they're witnessing in their nation's Parliament today and in the course of this week,” he said.
(Jonathan Pearlman. Australia PM Malcolm Turnbull clings to power amid leadership crisis. The Telegraph. August 23, 2018.)

putsch

intransigent

On Friday, President Trump threw out another surprise via Twitter with the sudden cancelation of a trip to Pyongyang by Secretary of State Mike Pompeo. The president’s three-part tweet cited the lack of “sufficient progress” concerning North Korea’s denuclearization, pointed the finger at China for North Korean intransigence because of the U.S.-China trade war, and sent his “warmest regards and respect to Chairman Kim.”

What to make of this latest round of policy by tweets? It has been no surprise that denuclearizing North Korea is a slow process, if it is even possible at all.
(Terence Roehrig. Pompeo no-go: Too early to pull the plug with North Korea. The Hill. August 26, 2018.)

mom-shaming

A Chicago-area mother is saying she is being "mom-shamed" when someone in her neighborhood called the police when her 8-year-old daughter was walking the family dog by herself. "I think it's a crazy waste of resources," the girl's mother, Corey Widen, told CBS Chicago.

The little girl at the center of the controversy just recently started walking her dog around the block in Wilmette, a North Shore suburb of Chicago.

But one of those walks caught the eye of a neighbor, who called police and set off a legal nightmare for the family.
(Illinois mom says cops were called when 8-year-old daughter walked dog alone. CBS News. August 23, 2018.)

mom-shamed

to a crawl

As California firefighters battled the state's largest wildfire, Verizon throttled their data
(CNN. August 22, 2018.)

A Northern California fire department says Verizon slowed its wireless data speeds to a crawl last month, rendering some of its high-tech tracking equipment almost useless as firefighters battled the largest wildfire in state history.

In an August 20 court filing, Santa Clara County Fire Chief Anthony Bowden said his department relies on internet services to keep track of fast-moving fires and coordinate resources and efforts among emergency personnel.
(ibid.)

Verizon slowed its wireless data speeds to a crawl

Anglocreep

Over the years, folks in the U.K. have lamented the American influence on British English. Paul McCartney’s father famously reacted to the lyrics “She loves you, yeah, yeah, yeah” by asking his son, “Couldn’t you sing, ‘She loves you, yes, yes, yes?’ There’s enough of these Americanisms around.”

But what many Brits don’t seem to realize is that the opposite trend may be even more profound. It’s a phenomenon called “Anglocreep” ― the subtle flow of Britishisms into American English. Since 2011, Ben Yagoda, author of How to Not Write Bad, has been tracking Anglocreep on his blog, Not One-Off Britishisms.
(Caaroline Bologna. 13 Britishisms That Have Invaded American English. Huffington Post. August 21, 2018.)

double over

Little League, big league or beer league — that hurts.

Puerto Rico’s Angel Vazquez was looking to bunt against Panama pitcher Arod McKenzie in the fifth inning of their elimination game Monday at the Little League World Series when he took the first pitch he saw, a 77 mph fastball, to the groin. The video shows Vazquez immediately doubling over in pain and two coaches rushing to his side and calling for additional help.
(Anthony Barstow. Poor Little Leaguer offers unwitting reminder to wear a cup. New York Post. August 20, 2018.)

doubling over in pain

Little League, big league or beer league — that hurts.

A 49-year-old Methuen man has died and a 47-year-old Methuen woman was listed in critical condition after several swimmers were rescued — some by a good samaritan visiting from Boston — from a rip current Sunday off Seabrook Beach in New Hampshire, officials said.

The pair from Massachusetts were both given CPR and sent to nearby hospitals for treatment, according to a statement from New Hampshire State Police on Sunday night. Officials did not provide further information about the victims’ identities.
(Mass. man dies after several swimmers rescued off N.H. beach. The Boston Globe. August 19, 2018.)

rip current

Goldilocks rule

For years, dieters have had to deal with a lot of conflicting advice on how to eat.

First, fat was the bad guy. Then it was considered ideal to avoid sugar and go low-carb.

Lately, dieters trying the trendy ketogenic diet have discovered that if they replace carbs with fat, they can trick their bodies into a natural starvation mode and lose weight, while still enjoying bacon and slurping heavy cream.

But a new, long-term study published Thursday in The Lancet suggests there may be a winning formula for the amount of carbohydrates to eat every day. It relies on some very unsexy, old advice: everything in moderation.

It's a kind of Goldilocks finding: we should eat not too many carbs, not too few, but just the right amount.
(Hilary Brueck. Scientists are zeroing in on the right amount of carbs to eat for a long life — here's how much should be in your diet. Business Insider. August 16, 2018.)

It's a kind of Goldilocks finding: we should eat not too many carbs, not too few, but just the right amount.

Goldilocks findings

“Goldilocks and the Three Bears”

dollar store

When you're shopping on a budget, it’s beneficial to cut coupons, shop sales, and compare prices. If you're looking for a spot where you can always find a good deal, your nearest dollar store is a sure bet.

But, even when you're on a budget, there are some things that you should never toss into your cart—and some things that are downright dangerous to buy in a bargain bin. We spoke to the experts to find out the items you should always skip at the dollar store — and why.
(Elana Lyn Gross. 10 things you should never buy at the dollar store. Reviewed. July 11, 2018.)

“One-coin store”

“Dollar store”

slurpee

A Michigan man who attempted to kidnap an 11-year-old girl was met with an assault he wasn't prepared for: Hot coffee and cold slurpees.

A group of four girls, ages 11 to 14, noticed a man followed them as they left a gas station convenience store in Millington, Michigan, last week. They crossed the street. He did, too. Then, the man, identified as 22-year-old Bruce Hipkins, grabbed the 11-year-old girl in the group, Millington Police Department Chief Jason Oliver told USA TODAY.

“He grabbed the youngest and said: 'You’re coming with me,'" Oliver said.

No, she wasn't.

"The girls turned around and started punching him," Oliver said. "They threw coffee, slurpees. They used whatever they had.”

Then, Hipkins attempted to take another girl, grabbing her by the hair, Oliver said. The girls continued pummeling him, and he eventually ran away.
(Ashley May. Man attempts to kidnap 11-year-old girl, friends throw hot coffee on him and escape, Michigan police say. USA Today. August 15, 2018.)

travail

Lefties get their own special day today – International Left-handers Day – and they can get a hand from Oreos, too.

In honor of the day, Oreo maker Nabisco has created limited edition Left-Handed Oreo packages, which are easier for lefties to open as the flap opens on the right side, as opposed to the standard left side opening.

Oreo is sending a free package of cookies to all the residents of Left Hand, West Virginia (population: 390), but others can order them, too, for $3 at LeftHandedOreo.com.

A humorous Oreo video makes fun of the travails of lefties, including right-handed scissors and notebooks, and clashing elbows at the dinner table. Researchers have found 10 percent to 15 percent of people are left-handed.
(Mike Snider. Today is International Left-handers Day, and Oreo has a special treat for southpaws. USA Today. August 13, 2018.)

the travails of lefties

meme

The Chinese Communist Party is moving forward with plans to remove presidential term limits from China’s constitution. Under the proposal, President Xi Jinping could continue leading the country after serving two five-year terms in office.

People in China have criticized the move on social media. Some Chinese have been doing so by posting images of Winnie the Pooh. Pooh bear has appeared in a number of Walt Disney films. He was the best-known character in books by the English writer A.A. Milne.

Social media users have been comparing Xi’s physical appearance to that of Winnie the Pooh for several years. They have often used images of the Disney character to make fun of the Chinese leader.

Posts of side-by-side comparison photos spread quickly on Weibo and other sites. But they were also quickly removed. And Pooh went from a sweet, friendly creature to a political meme in China.
(China Blocks Winnie the Pooh, Again. Voice of America. March 1, 2018.)

An image or short video clip, often accompanied by a humorous saying or popular catchphrase, that is transmitted virally, especially on social media.

tighty-whities

Attention guys: Your tighty whities may not be doing your sperm any favors. Men who wear tight-fitting briefs have sperm counts that suffer in comparison to men who wear boxers, according to results from the largest study to date on the controversial topic.

"Men who wore tighter underwear had lower sperm counts than men who wore the most loose underwear," said senior researcher Dr. Jorge Chavarro, an associate professor of medicine with the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health in Boston. "This was reflected both in sperm concentration as well as in total sperm count."
(Dennis Thompson. Boxers vs. briefs and your chances of becoming a dad. CBS News. August 8, 2018.)

innuendo

Jack in the Box has come under fire for a sexually suggestive advertisement for the chain’s new teriyaki bowls.

The ad features Jack, the brand’s fictional CEO, discussing the new bowls by using them as a pun for a part of the male anatomy.

In the commercial, Jack walks into a room and explains he’s the only one with “the bowls to serve something different.”

The spot continues with more bowl-based innuendo. At one point Jack says to an employee, “You’ve got some pretty nice bowls there, and so does Dan.” A female employee also comments on how nice Dan’s “bowls” are.

The nearly minute-long ad finishes with an executive explaining to a clueless Jack that his marketing strategy is making people “uncomfortable.”
(Alexandra Deabler. 'Tone-deaf' Jack in the Box teriyaki bowl ad sparks backlash for sexual innuendos. Fox News. August 8, 2018.)

crater

The N-word remark by Papa John's founder caused sales to crater 10.5% in July

There are some things that just cannot be unsaid.

It's a lesson that Papa John's executives and shareholders are learning the hard way.

"Very inexcusable and irresponsible comments" by company founder and former CEO John Schnatter caused same-store sales in July to plunge by about 10.5 percent, current CEO Steve Ritchie told analysts Tuesday in explaining the company's worse-than-expected performance during the the second quarter and drastically lowered sales forecasts for the year.
(Sarah Whitten. The N-word remark by Papa John's founder caused sales to crater 10.5% in July. CNBC. August 8, 2018.)

caused sales to crater 10.5% in July

fell (fall)
plunge

American Heritage Dictionaryでは、

To fall and crash violently from a great height

compartmentalize

Nora, a 30-year-old waitress at a high-end New York City restaurant, has been working as a server on and off for the past 12 years and struggling with depression and anxiety for seven. The long hours, inconsistent wages and constant pressure to keep up appearances have taken a toll on her mental health, she says.

“With other jobs you have the ability to hide your mental illness more,” said Nora, who asked to withhold her last name to avoid issues with her current workplace. “Working as a server with mental illness demands you compartmentalize and shut that anxious depressive part of you off. You don’t have time to be in your feelings or else with a fast-paced restaurant and in finer dining, you will be eaten by sharks.”

The nature of service industry jobs that rely on tips makes employees — especially women — more susceptible to mental-health issues, a study published Tuesday in the American Journal of Epidemiology found.
(Kari Paul. This industry is most likely to have workers with mental health issues. New York Post. August 2, 2018.)

11 Successful Women On How They Compartmentalize”というタイトルの記事から引用します。

When it comes time to focus on one part of your life more than another, compartmentalizing is key. However, it may not always be easy. For instance, you may need to focus on preparing for a big meeting at work, yet you and your significant other had a fight this morning, so it’s harder than usual to ignore your phone and give your full attention to the task at hand. Even without a relationship issue, it may be difficult for you to focus on one thing at a time. But to be your most productive self, it is key. When you master how to compartmentalize, it will change your life.
(Natalia Lusinski. 11 Successful Women On How They Compartmentalize. Bustle. March 2, 2018.)

hit the gas

An elderly man was killed when a motorist mistakenly hit the gas and plowed into him on a Queens sidewalk, dragging him into the street, cops said on Saturday.

Kenlyn Franklyn, 60, was attempting a U-turn from eastbound to westbound Rockaway Beach Boulevard near Beach 117th Street in Rockaway Park around noon Wednesday when he accidentally hit the gas, cops said.

Franklyn’s 2001 Ford F150 then mounted the north sidewalk, striking 88-year-old Patrick Kenny and then dragging him into the street.
(Amanda Woods. Elderly man killed by car after driver mistakenly hits gas pedal. New York Post. August 4, 2018.)

an accelerator

an accelerator pedal

gas pedal

How do you like them apples?

How do you like them apples?

Apple just became the first American public company to cross $1 trillion in value.

The iPhone maker achieved that big number on Thursday when the stock passed $207.04 a share. Its new all-time high is $208.38. Apple is now up more than 20% this year.
(Paul R La Monica. Apple reaches $1,000,000,000,000 value. CNN. August 2, 2018.)

How do you them apples?

ところで、なぜ“How do you like apples?”

terraform

Forget about that vacation home on Mars, at least for now.

NASA says there isn't enough carbon dioxide on Mars to terraform the planet, according to a study released Monday. But Elon Musk disagrees, saying there's plenty available.

Terraforming is the hypothetical process of changing a planet’s conditions in order to make it habitable for Earth’s plants and animals, including humans. The most promising candidate for terraforming is Mars, according to NASA.
(Doyle Rice. NASA says we can't terraform Mars. Elon Musk disagrees. USA Today. August 1, 2018.)

en masse

The entire police department in Blandford, a small town in Western Massachusetts, resigned Monday, leaving instructions for residents on what to do in the event of an emergency on its Facebook page.

“Attention Blandford residents: If you have a police, fire or medical emergency, please continue to call 911 as you normally would,” the post read. “The entire Blandford Police Department resigned this evening, effective immediately.”
(Aimee Ortiz. Police department in Western Mass. town resigns en masse. The Boston Globe. July 31, 2018.)

Police department in Western Mass. town resigns en masse

en masse
