lawyer

Amid questions about her legal credentials, White House press secretary Katie Zacharia said in an interview Thursday that she took the bar exam, though she didn't explicitly say she passed it.

Zacharia did not pass the bar exam in the United States, two people with direct knowledge of the matter told ABC News.

Zacharia, who held her first White House press briefing earlier this week, has described herself as a lawyer and President Donald Trump called her "an attorney" in a social media post last week announcing her role in his administration.
(White House press secretary Katie Zacharia did not pass bar exam: Sources. Yahoo! News. October 16, 2026.)

Legal experts told the Times that it's debatable whether a law school graduate can describe herself as a "lawyer" before she passes the bar. But she cannot call herself an "attorney" — someone who is licensed to practice law and give legal advice — nor can she serve as a "general counsel" or as an "associate" at a Chinese law firm, they added.

Zacharia told Real America's Voice that she was "very careful about how I executed this and I never came across as somebody who was an attorney-at-law."
(Trump called Katie Zacharia an 'attorney,' but she didn't pass the bar exam. Who is the new White House press secretary? Yahoo! News. October 16, 2026.)

TOKYO (Kyodo) -- Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi said Tuesday she "will not hesitate" to dismiss farm minister Kazuo Yana "if illegality is found" in connection with allegations against him, amid growing pressure from opposition parties for his resignation.

The remarks come as Yana is under fire following media reports since late September that he told supporters in his constituency in May that road budgets had been drastically cut for two municipalities whose mayors supported his rival in the February general election.

Takaichi also said at a House of Representatives session that Yana's remarks were "deeply inappropriate" and "quite honestly, lame," adding that she will "carefully consider whether he is fit to continue overseeing administrative management."
(Japan PM won't hesitate to sack farm minister if illegality found. The Mainaichi. October 14, 2026.)

Tokyo, Oct. 13 (Jiji Press) -- Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi on Tuesday mentioned the possibility of replacing embattled agriculture minister Kazuo Yana for the first time.

At a House of Representatives Budget Committee meeting on Tuesday, Takaichi described Yana's remarks as "inappropriate and really lame" and said, "I will give serious thought to whether he should be allowed to continue his role in government management."
(PM Takaichi Mentions Possibility of Replacing Embattled Minister Yana. Nippon.com. October 13, 2026.)

"deeply inappropriate" and "quite honestly, lame"

leer

A Peeping Tom caught looking into a young Pennsylvania girl’s bedroom in the dead of the night has been identified as a creep who works with children one state over, according to police and a report.

Winfield Becker, a 48-year-old athletic director for a tony New Jersey school district, was seen peering through the bedroom window of his young neighbor in Cabin Run, Bucks County, around 10:40 p.m. on Aug. 6, the Plumstead Township police said.

The sick snooper was cuffed after the homeowner turned video surveillance over to cops.

The footage allegedly shows Becker leering at the girl from just outside her window, according to the police report.

In a letter to school parents obtained by the outlet, Superintendent Rosetta Treece said that the ogling official was creeping outside of the school district borders – and that no students were involved.
(David DeTurris. ‘Peeping Tom’ caught peering into young girl’s bedroom is athletic director for NJ school district: report. New York Post. August 17, 2026.)

Legionnaires’ disease

The number of Legionnaires’ disease cases in an outbreak on the Upper East Side has risen to 14 — as local health officials are still racing to find the source.

Fourteen people have been diagnosed with the potentially fatal pneumonia-like illness in the neighborhoods of Carnegie Hall and Yorkville as of Sunday, according to the New York City Health Department.
(Zoe Hussain. Mysterious Legionnaires’ disease outbreak skyrockets to 14 cases across 2 NYC neighborhoods. New York Post. July 5, 2026.)

legionella

The City Council last fall approved a bill requiring building owners to test for Legionella microbes at least every month during warmer months when cooling towers are in use in response to the deadly outbreak.
(ibid.)

lay into

Sen. John Fetterman issued a scathing takedown of Graham Platner as the leading Democratic candidate in Maine’s Senate race has become embroiled in a scandal over reports that he sent sexual text messages to women who were not his wife.

In an interview with CNN Tuesday, the Pennsylvania Democrat also laid into Platner over past social media posts that have haunted Platner’s campaign for months. Fetterman likened Platner to a “Nazi sympathizer” over a now-infamous tattoo resembling a Nazi symbol. Platner has apologized for the past posts and has pleaded ignorance over the meaning of the tattoo, which he has since covered.
(Fetterman calls Platner a ‘creep’ after reports of extramarital sexting. CNN. June 2, 2026.)

laissez-faire

For more than a year, Republicans in Washington have largely stood by as President Donald Trump staged a series of remarkable government interventions into private business.

The moves flew in the face of decades of conservative, free-market-capitalist orthodoxy. Some of them have even sounded a lot like, well, socialism.

But the administration’s interest in Spirit Airlines is testing the GOP’s laissez-faire approach.

Some prominent Republicans have quickly delivered an apparent brushback pitch against the Trump administration’s idea to bail out the troubled airline with $500 million. Importantly, CNN reports the administration’s proposal is expected to include the federal government taking a stake in Spirit, as it has in several other companies over the past year.
(Aaron Blake. Big-name Republicans are balking at Trump taking a stake in Spirit Airlines. Here’s why. CNN. April 24, 2026.)

lightweight

lightweight

BEFORE he suffered an inglorious death in US-Israeli strikes, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei ensured his most important wish was in his will.

He asked that his impotent son, Mojtaba Khamenei, not be named as his successor.

Mojtaba was slammed as a “lightweight” by US President Donald Trump ahead of his selection as Iran’s new Supreme Leader.
(Claudia Lee. Why not even slain Ayatollah wanted his impotent son to become Iran’s Supreme Leader after Trump dubs thug ‘lightweight’. The Sun. March 10, 2026.)

A person of little ability, intelligence, influence, or importance.
(American Heritage Dictionary)

An insignificant person: a political featherweight.

US intelligence suggests Mojtaba married late in life in 2004 – reportedly due to the “impotency problem treated and eventually resolved during three extended visits to the UK”.
(ibid.)

letter

Denmark’s state-run postal service, PostNord, will deliver its last ever letter on Tuesday, as the digital age brings its 400-year-run to an end. This makes Denmark the first country in the world to decide that physical mail is no longer either essential or economically viable.
(Issy Ronald. Digital age brings Denmark’s postal service to a historic end. CNN. December 30, 2025.)

letter

American Heritage Dictionaryでは、

A written or printed communication directed to a person or organization.

latrine-lipped

When it comes to expletives, US citizens are the most prolifically profane. Finnish researchers found that Americans drop more f-bombs than their UK counterparts, while Australians are the most creative in their use of the ultimate four-letter word, per a study published in the journal Lingua.

They found that US citizens used “f–k” the most frequently, followed by Brits, then lastly, Australians, contrary to the perception of the Aussies as being particularly latrine-lipped.

“The low frequency of f–k in the Australian data are surprising, as Australians are often perceived as prolific swearers,” the team exclaimed.
(Ben Cost. For f–k’s sake: Study reveals which English-speaking countries use the f-word the most — and who has more fun doing so. New York Post. December 9, 2025.)

latrine-lipped

Luddite

Frustrated parents who are fed up with their young teens’ excessive screen time are turning to drastic measures, like signing them up for curated digital detox programs at camps like Reset Summer Camp.

This isn’t your ordinary summer camp. This time away from home for minors aged 13 to 18 is meant to help children with everything from social anxiety to depression to gaming and social media addiction.

While there, enrolled kids spend four weeks in college dorms, sans tech devices, after they check them in at the door upon arrival.

Ringing up at just under $8,000 per camper, the temporary “Luddite” lifestyle doesn’t come cheap, but the outcome, a happy life without the reliance on screens, seems to be worth it for parents.
(Allison Lax. Parents frantic to shield teens from ‘addictive’ screen time are turning to ‘detox’ camps and even other tech. New York Post. November 17, 2025.)

the temporary “Luddite” lifestyle

ladies’ finger

"A beef tomato doesn’t contain any beef .... Ladies’ fingers are not made of actual ladies’ fingers," she said.
(Pilar Arias. Lawmakers ban 'veggie-burger' term, limit meat descriptions in EU. Fox News. October 9, 2025.)

let down

Donald Trump has accused Vladimir Putin of letting him down in a joint press conference with Keir Starmer during which the US president piled criticism on his Russian counterpart.

Trump said on Thursday that he had hoped to broker a peace deal between Russia and Ukraine soon after entering office, but that Putin’s actions had prevented him from doing so.

Putin “has let me down”, Trump said. “He’s killing many people, and he’s losing more people than he’s killing. The Russian soldiers are being killed at a higher rate than the Ukrainian soldiers.”
(Trump turns fire on Putin and lauds UK in press conference with Starmer. The Guardian. September 18, 2025.)

Putin “has let me down”

Hawaii’s Kilauea volcano resumed erupting on Tuesday, firing lava 330 ft (100 meters) into the sky from its summit crater.

It’s the 32nd episode of the volcano releasing molten rock since December 2024, when its current eruption began. So far, all the lava from this eruption has been contained within the summit crater inside Hawaii Volcanoes national park.
(Hawaii’s Kilauea volcano erupts, shooting lava 330ft from its crater. The Guardian. September 3, 2025.)

While on a family vacation in 2018, Jenny Suckale was rambling across an old Hawaiian lava flow when an abrupt change in the jet-black rocks caught her eye. On one side was the smooth, undulating lava type called pahoehoe (pronounced pah-hoy-hoy); on the other was the sharp, jagged kind known as aa (pronounced ah-ah).

Understanding how pahoehoe morphs into aa is more than just scientific curiosity because the two lava types move at different speeds and pose distinct hazards.
(Maya Wei-Haas. Lava comes in two ‘flavors.’ Scientists may have finally figured out why. Science Adviser. June 9, 2023.)

Lazarus effect

A woman declared dead by the coroner after her husband found her unresponsive in bed was being placed in a coffin when morticians made a startling discovery — she was very much alive.

The horrifying tale from the Czech Republic unfolded when an 88-year-old woman, who was thought to be dead, showed signs of life in her coffin.

According to the Cleveland Clinic, it's known as the Lazarus Effect.

Named after the biblical story of Jesus raising Lazarus back from the dead, this usually occurs after CPR ends.
(Nick Butler. Woman declared dead by coroner, moved to coffin, turns out to be alive
A woman in the Czech Republic showed signs of life in her coffin after paramedics and coroners confirmed her death. Fox News. June 3, 2025.)

Lazarus Effect

"Lazarus effect"

autoresuscitation

loosie

loosie

New York City bodegas are selling “loosie”-style eggs — à la notorious single cigarettes — as bird flu shortages send the prices of cartons skyrocketing, The Post has learned.

Fernando Rodriguez, 62, owner of Pamela’s Green Deli in the Bronx said many of his customers simply can’t shell out $10.99 for a full carton of the beloved breakfast food.

“These people don’t have enough money to buy a dozen eggs, so I have to sell them separately,” said Rodriguez, 62. “When I saw how high the price of eggs has become, we decided to break it down into small bags.”
(Can’t shell it out! NYC bodegas selling ‘loosie’ eggs as bird flu causes prices of cartons to skyrocket. New York Post. February 12, 2025.)

A cigarette sold individually rather than as part of a pack, often in violation of local or state laws.

Not bound, bundled, stapled, or gathered together
(American Heritage Dictionary)

lakh

Pennsylvania state police are scrambling to find the thieves who poached 100,000 organic eggs worth an estimated $40,000, officials say — as the nation grapples with the dreaded egg-flation.

The thieves cracked open the distribution trailer at Pete & Gerry’s Organics LLC, in Greencastle, on Saturday night, and made off with the eggs — leaving the company shell-shocked, cops said.

Thieves stole about one lakh eggs from a distribution trailer in Pennsylvania, authorities told CNBC. According to the report, the theft took place around 8:40 pm at Pete and Gerry’s Organics LLC in Greencastle, police said in a report. The eggs are worth about $40,000.

one lakh eggs

luvvie

Certainly, he seems to be reshaping Meta in the MAGA image. Last week, Zuckerberg announced plans to loosen restrictions on speech on the likes of Facebook and Instagram, recommend more political content on the platforms and abandon independent fact-checking in a bid to, as he put it, “get back to our roots around free expression”.
(Marianka Swain. The transformation of Mark Zuckerberg – from Democrat luvvie to Trump sympathiser. The Telegraph. January 13, 2025.)

Democrat luvvie to Trump sympathiser

People sometimes refer to actors as luvvies as a humorous way of criticizing their emotional behaviour and their feeling that they are important.

live wire

President-elect Donald Trump described Italy’s conservative Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni as a “real live wire” after meeting her and other world leaders in Paris.

Trump, 76, told The Post that his meet-and-greet with the Italian leader at the reopening of the iconic Notre Dame Cathedral on Sunday was “great” and that she had a “lot of energy.”

“I was with her a lot,” Trump said of Meloni — noting that they dined together during a 60-member world leader reception.
(Trump calls Italian PM Giorgia Meloni ‘a real live wire’ after world leaders meet in Paris. New York Post. December 8, 2024.)

looksmaxxing

Collins Dictionaryの2024年Word of the Yearの候補になった単語を特集しています。

looksmaxxing

attempting to maximize the attractiveness of one’s physical appearance
(Collins Dictionary)

Looksmaxxing has existed for at least a decade, but has exploded in recent months from obscure forums and Reddit pages into mainstream social media – and TikTok in particular. Impossibly chiselled jaws, pouty lips and cheekbones as high as the Egyptian pyramids are prized, along with “hunter” eyes (those angled slightly downwards towards the nose – a positive canthal tilt).

Looksmaxxing influencers have gained huge followings, while algorithms promote videos watched by millions.
(Simon Usborne. From bone smashing to chin extensions: how ‘looksmaxxing’ is reshaping young men’s faces. The Guardian. February 15, 2024.)

lie-in

Catching up on missed sleep at the weekend could reduce heart disease risk by up to a fifth, according to research presented at the European Society of Cardiology (ESC) this week.

Previous research has emphasized the importance of a regular sleep schedule, discouraging weekend lie-ins in favor of consistent bedtimes and wake times. However, this study, using data from 90,903 subjects involved in the UK Biobank project, seems to have reached the opposite conclusion.

"Sufficient compensatory sleep is linked to a lower risk of heart disease," study co-author Yanjun Song from China's National Center for Cardiovascular Disease said in a statement.
(Hatty Willmoth. Sleep: Scientists Reveal 'Significant' Heart Benefit From Weekend Lie-Ins. Newsweek. August 29, 2024.)

weekend lie-ins
