Auld Lang Syne

Sung while standing in a circle and holding crossed hands with your nearest and dearest, it has been sung on New Year's Eve for generations.

But now Auld Lang Syne is at risk of dying out, streaming figures show, as Millennials are shunning the traditional way of ringing in the New Year.

For the next generation are willing to let old anthems be forgotten, according to new research which show the Scottish ballad is not a hit with younger listeners. The song, based on a poem by Robert Burns, is sung to ring in the New Year as people cross arms to hold hands in a circle throughout the song.

It was the most-played track between 11.55pm on New Year's Eve 2017 and 12.05am on January 1 this year, according to streaming service Deezer. However it is predicted to attract fewer plays when the clock strikes midnight tonight.
(Katie Morley. Will Auld Lang Syne be forgot this New Year's Eve? The Telegraph. December 31, 2018.)

“Auld Lang Syne”

macroglossia

A 16-month-old toddler in Jenks, Oklahoma, who was born with a rare condition that causes his tongue to be abnormally large will require surgery to reduce its size, his mother said.

Baker Roth was has a condition known as Beckwith-Wiedemann Syndrome or BWS. The genetic disorder is “commonly characterized by overgrowth,” according to the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. And it’s rare -- typically occurring with just one in 11,000 births.

Baker’s BWS diagnosis came as a surprise. Though ultrasound images appeared to show the boy’s tongue sticking out of his mouth, neither Roth nor her doctors ever considered it to be a sign of the rare condition.

“I always thought it was cute that he had his tongue sticking out in ultrasound scans, but realistically it was macroglossia [enlarged tongue] caused by BWS,” Roth told The Daily Mail. “Not a lot of doctors are familiar with the syndrome and we just thought it was adorable, I even posted about how cute it was.”
(Madeline Farber. Oklahoma toddler who survived cancer requires surgery for abnormally sized tongue, mom says. Fox News. December 28, 2018.)

macroglossia

glossary

sleep-texting

Andrew Watson, 26, was so good at coordinating international business deals that he did it in his sleep.

“I’d fall asleep with my work phone next to my head, [then send emails] and have no memory of doing it,” Watson, who worked for a cloud computing company, tells The Post. “It was really bad” — so bad that the San Francisco resident once woke up to discover he had signed off on a million-dollar deal.

According to a new report out of Villanova University, sleep-texting is a growing issue among young men and women. Scientists surveyed 372 students and found that nearly a quarter of them reported texting in their sleep — and 72 percent of those sleep-texters didn’t remember their midnight missives in the light of day.
(Hannah Frishberg. People are texting exes and buying stuff in their sleep. New York Post. December 26, 2018.)

WASHINGTON – President Donald Trump questioned a 7-year-old’s belief in Santa Claus, telling the child it was “marginal” at that age to still think Father Christmas is real.

"Are you still a believer in Santa?" Trump said to a child calling in to the federal government's official "Santa Tracker," run by the North American Aerospace Defense Command. "Because at 7, it's marginal, right?" Trump said.
(Deidre Shesgreen. President Trump tells 7-year-old child it's 'marginal' to still believe in Santa Claus. USA Today. December 25, 2018.)

Because at 7, it's marginal, right?

take the helm

It's official - deputy defense secretary Patrick Shanahan will be taking the helm at the Pentagon as acting secretary of defense.

James Mattis, who resigned from the position over US President Donald Trump's decision to pull troops out of Syria, will be forced out of the role before 2019. In his resignation letter, Mattis had offered to stay on for two months in order to facilitate a smooth transition.

Instead, Trump announced his new pick in a tweet on Sunday. He praised Shanahan, writing: "Patrick has a long list of accomplishments while serving as Deputy, & previously Boeing. He will be great!"
(Aine Cain. Meet Patrick Shanahan, the former Boeing executive nicknamed 'Mr. Fix-It' who's replacing General James Mattis as Defense secretary. Business Insider. December 23, 2018.)

take the helm

payroll

Former Nissan chief Carlos Ghosn, detained for the past five weeks on charges he underreported his income, will spend Christmas and New Year's Eve in a Tokyo jail cell.

The Tokyo District Court ruled Sunday that Ghosn can be held for a further 10 days without bail. The decision follows his rearrest on Friday on additional allegations of breach of trust. Japanese prosecutors petitioned the court to extend the executive's detention and restrict bail.

Since his arrest on November 19, Ghosn has been fired as chairman by both Nissan and Mitsubishi Motors.

Renault has appointed interim management but kept Ghosn on the payroll.
(Andrew Grainer. Carlos Ghosn will spend Christmas in a Tokyo jail cell. CNN. December 23, 2018.)

(Renault) kept Ghosn on the payroll

They cut him from their payroll.

babushka

The babushka egg was laid by a free-range chicken at the Stockman's Eggs on the Atherton Tablelands, west of Cairns, in far north Queensland.

Farmer Scott Stockman said one of the staff found the egg and he was there soon after.

Mr Stockman said the egg weighed 176 grams, more than three times the size of an average egg.

And as for how the chicken is faring, Mr Stockman said "she would have had a pain in the bum".

When it was cracked, they discovered a second smaller egg sitting inside.

"It's just incredible actually — to have two perfectly formed eggs together," Mr Stockman said.
(Massive 'babushka' egg laid on far north Queensland farm never seen before by expert. ABC News. March 6, 2018.)

babushka egg

finger wave

A Vermont man, involved in a long-running spat with local officials, erected a giant sculpture of the middle finger saluting city council with the one-finger wave.

Ted Pelkey had the sculpture erected next to a highway in the town of Westford earlier this month.

“It’s intended for the people who run the town of Westford,” Pelkey told WCAX-TV.

According to the news station, Pelkey has been in a long-running dispute with the town over red tape that’s preventing him from developing on his property. The man wants to move his recycling business and a truck repair shop from another town to his property to cut down on expenses. Pelkey claims city staff have a personal grudge against him and are creating red tape.
(Adam Frisk. Vermont man erects giant middle-finger sculpture, flipping off local government. Global News. December 12, 2018.)

one-finger wave

A steep rise in nicotine vaping over the past year, accompanied by widespread minimizing of its potential harm, dominated the findings of a closely watched annual survey of American teenagers, released Monday.

The vaping increase was so precipitous, researchers said, that it was the largest annual jump in the use of any substance, including marijuana, they had seen in the project’s 44-year history.

In all, the researchers found, the rise amounted to 1.3 million more high school vapers in 2018 than in 2017.
(Jan Hoffman. Study Shows Big Rise in Teen Vaping This Year. New York Times. December 17, 2018.)

The vaping increase was so precipitous

precipitous decline
precipitous drop
precipitous fall

precipitous rise
precipitous increase

Merriam-Webster Dictionaryでは、

very steep, perpendicular, or overhanging in rise or fall

lead-footed

An Ohio police officer told a teenager "you're welcome" in an open letter on Facebook Sunday after issuing the 18-year-old a speeding ticket on State Route 10. And the cop hopes other lead-footed drivers will take note.

When the officer — who was not identified in the post — with the North Ridgeville Police Department pulled the teenager over for speeding, the driver claimed to not realize how fast he or she was going. But the officer immediately knew that wasn't true. In fact, the official said it should be pretty obvious you're speeding when you hit 100 miles per hour in a 65 mile-per-hour zone.
(Jennifer Earl. Ohio police officer pens emotional plea to speeders after ticketing teen for driving 100 mph. Fox News. December 17, 2018.)

lead-footed drivers

Online Etymology Dictionary

opposite sense of "fast" emerged 1940s in trucker's jargon, from notion of a foot heavy on the gas pedal

get under one’s skin

Vladimir Putin is declaring war on rap music

Vlad’s got 99 problems — and rap is one.

Russian autocrat Vladimir Putin, facing poverty, protests and allegations of attacking U.S. elections, declared war on hip-hop on Saturday, railing that “rap is based on three pillars: sex, drugs and protest,” which will lead to “ the degradation of the nation.”

Putin’s comments follow a spate of concert cancellations by venue owners and local authorities across Russia, and the arrest of popular rapper Husky, whose songs have gotten under his skin.

“If it is impossible to stop, then we must lead it and direct it,” Putin said.
(Vladimir Putin is declaring war on rap music. New York Post. December 15, 2018.)

Have gotten under his skin

creamed

Republicans refuse to admit they got creamed in the midterms

It’s been a month since the midterms, and the grad scale of the calamity that has befallen the Republican Party grows clearer by the day. And yet Republicans in Washington seem intent on denying it.

In his wild meeting Tuesday with Democratic congressional leaders Nancy Pelosi and Charles Schumer, President Trump emphasized the fact that the GOP expanded its majority in the Senate by two seats.
(John Pdhoretz. Republicans refuse to admit they got creamed in the midterms. New York Post. December 12, 2018.)

Republicans refuse to admit they got creamed in the midterms

To defeat overwhelmingly; to damage severely; destroy
(American Heritage Dictionary)

“Cream”

swill

James Bond is a "severe" alcoholic and should have been provided with professional help by MI6, according to an academic study.

Public health researchers at the University of Otago in New Zealand analysed 24 Bond films and concluded that the martini-swilling secret agent suffered from "chronic" alcohol use disorder.

They wrote: "There is strong and consistent evidence that James Bond has a chronic alcohol consumption problem at the 'severe' end of the spectrum."

The analysis, published in the Medical Journal of Australia, found Bond sipped a drink 109 times, or an average of 4.5 times in each film.
(Nick Allen. 'Licence to swill' - James Bond declared 'severe' alcoholic by public health academics. The Telegraph. December 10, 2018.)

'Licence to swill'

neti pot

Brain-eating amoeba

A Seattle woman has died after contracting a a rare brain-eating amoeba from using tap water in a neti pot - which turned her brain into 'bloody mush'.

Doctors had prescribed the woman, 69, to use the pot to flush out her nasal cavity after she'd been suffering from a persistent sinus infection.

But she used Brita-filtered water instead of sterile water and soon developed a strange rash on the bridge of her nose.

Unbeknownst to her, over the course of the next year, an amoeba was gnawing away at the woman's brain tissue.
(Natalie Rahhal. Woman killed by a rare brain-eating amoeba which 'turned her brain into a bloody mush' after she used a NETI POT to treat her sinus infection. The Daily Mail. December 8, 2018.)

The pot to flush out her nasal cavity

otherworldly

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. (AP) — NASA’s new Mars lander has captured the first sounds of the “really unworldly” Martian wind.

The Jet Propulsion Laboratory released audio clips of the alien wind Friday. The low-frequency rumblings were collected by the InSight lander during its first week of operations at Mars.

The wind is estimated to be blowing 10 mph to 15 mph (16 kph to 24 kph). These are the first sounds from Mars that are detectable by human ears, according to the researchers.
(NASA Records Sound Of Mars’ ‘Really Unworldly’ Wind For The First Time. Huffington Post. December 8, 2018.)

Really unworldly

Scientists involved in the project agree the sound has an otherworldly quality to it. Thomas Pike of Imperial College London said the rumbling is “rather different to anything that we’ve experienced on Earth, and I think it just gives us another way of thinking about how far away we are getting these signals.”

The noise is of the wind blowing against InSight’s solar panels and the resulting vibration of the entire spacecraft. The sounds were recorded by an air pressure sensor inside the lander that’s part of a weather station, as well as the seismometer on the deck of the spacecraft.
(ibid.)

Otherworldly quality

Generation Z

Much has been said about millennials and their wants and needs in the housing market, but Generation Z (ages 18-24) appears to already be planning for homeownership more than other generations. A realtor.com survey found this upcoming generation is twice more likely than previous generations to be saving or plan to save for a home by age 25. In fact, two of five aim to become homeowners by that age.

The online listing website of the National Association of Realtors surveyed 3,372 Americans across Generation X (ages 35-50), millennials/Generation Y (ages 25-34) and Generation Zers to better understand the generational differences in relation to homeownership and aspirations.

A member of the generation born from the early 1980s to late 1990s, especially in the United States and Canada; a member of Generation Y.
(American Heritage Dictionary, 5th edition.)

Generation Z is about to change the face of the workforce.

The older members of this substantial group — more than 61 million individuals in the U.S. alone, often defined as the generation born between 1996 and 2010 — are now breaking into the labor force and should make up one-fifth of it by 2021.
(William Arruda. How To Make Your Workplace Ready For Gen Z. Forbes. November 13, 2018.)

Raised in the era of technology and economic upheaval, Generation Z – born in 1995 and onward – are marked by their work ethic, practical approach to education, and embrace of technology.
(Jason Wingard. Training Generation Z. Forbes. November 21, 2018.)

gaslighting

Shortlisted for the Oxford English Dictionary’s 2018 word of the year, “gaslighting” has well and truly found its way into contemporary thought and vernacular.

The term has recently been employed to explain the behaviour of contestants on The Bachelor Australia, Monica Lewinksy’s experiences with the media post-Bill Clinton, and the words of US President Donald Trump.

But what, exactly, does it mean? Where did it come from? And why is it experiencing a resurgence today?
(Explainer: what does ‘gaslighting’ mean? The Conversation. December 6, 2018.)

Although it can cover various behaviours, the central tenet of gaslighting is the psychological manipulation of a person in order to erode their sense of self and sanity.

The behaviour itself is not always deliberate, in that the perpetrator may not have consciously set out to distort another person’s experience of reality. But gaslighting is often used as a method of power and control.
(ibid.)

Oxfordによる2018年のWord of the Yearは、

toxic

It’s official: 2018 is toxic.

Well, lexicographically speaking, at least. Oxford Dictionaries has chosen “toxic” as its international word of the year, selecting it from a shortlist that included such politically inflected contenders as “gaslighting,” “incel” and “techlash.”

Katherine Connor Martin, the company’s head of U.S. dictionaries, said there had been a marked uptick of interest in the word on its website over the past year. But the word was chosen less for statistical reasons, she said, than for the sheer variety of contexts in which it has proliferated, from conversations about environmental poisons to laments about today’s poisonous political discourse to the #MeToo movement, with its calling out of “toxic masculinity.”
(Jennifer Schuessler. ‘Toxic’ Is Oxford’s Word of the Year. No, We’re Not Gaslighting You. New York Times. November 14, 2018.)

“Toxic” derives from the Greek “toxikon pharmakon,” meaning “poison for arrows.” (The part of the phrase meaning arrows, rather than poison, became the basis for the word.) The current entry in the online Oxford English Dictionary dates its earliest known printed occurrence to 1664, in a book about forests.
(ibid.)

pallbearer

A military guard carried George H.W. Bush’s coffin into the U.S. Capitol on Monday as the sun set in Washington, beginning several days of ceremonies and tributes to the 41st president.

Arriving from Houston in Special Air Mission 41, a presidential aircraft that was temporarily renamed to honor the 41st president, Bush’s coffin was greeted at Joint Base Andrews in Maryland by “Hail to the Chief” and a 21-gun salute. Two of the late president’s sons, George W. and Neil, flew on the presidential jet from Houston. His other children, Jeb, Marvin and Dorothy, met the plan when it landed.

With an American flag draped over it, the coffin departed Houston at noon Eastern Time. Members of the late president’s Secret Service Bush Protective Division served as honorary pallbearers in Texas.
(Rebecca Morin. George H.W. Bush makes final landing in Washington. Politico. December 3, 2018.)

Pallbearer

yardstick

‘Honorable, gracious and decent’: In death, Bush becomes a yardstick for President Trump

The tributes to former president George H.W. Bush poured in this weekend, each in their own way exposing the pitfalls ahead this week for the Oval Office’s current resident.

The 41st president was remembered by Barack Obama, the 44th, as “a humble servant.” “Honorable, gracious and decent” were the words Bill Clinton used in praise of his immediate predecessor. House Speaker Paul D. Ryan’s encomium described Bush as “great in his character, leading with decency and integrity.”

In death, presidents are measured not only by their accomplishments but by what their tenure says about sitting presidents — and in this case, the contrast appears stark.
(Gregg Jaffe. ‘Honorable, gracious and decent’: In death, Bush becomes a yardstick for President Trump. The Washington Post. December 2, 2018.)

knifepoint

A man who allegedly raped a woman at knifepoint after attacking her has been arrested, police said.

Nickolos Samaroo, 21, of Queens, was allegedly inside an apartment on 101st Avenue in Jamaica around 3 a.m. on Nov. 9 when he punched and kicked a 39-year-old woman until he knocked her out, the NYPD said.
(NY Man Accused of Raping Woman at Knifepoint Arrested: Police. NBC New York. November 28, 2018.)

at gunpoint

at swordpoint
at spearpoint
at riflepoint

Historians believe those settlers were descended from fewer than 100 families who fled Mexico in the 1600s after they escaped the Spanish Inquisition. They were Jews who converted to Catholicism at swordpoint.
(Denver Post, 2003)

Guards drove them at spearpoint down the steps into the lower bailey.
(Rod Garcia y Robertson. Strongbow. 1999.)

It was that of a 24-year-old sharecropper, wife and mother, who was kidnapped at riflepoint by seven men, driven deep into the woods and attacked.
(Atlanta Journal Constitution, 2010.)

― check in on

After struggling with growing numbers of parents in school cafeterias, the Darien school system said parents and guardians would no longer be welcome to visit with their children during lunch at the town’s elementary schools.

The decision has stirred strong emotions in Darien, a wealthy shoreline community that prides itself on its high-performing public schools. While some parents said it was time to stop a disruptive practice, others have protested at town meetings and in online forums that the change has deprived them of cherished time to check in on their children and model good social behavior.
(Michael Melia. A Connecticut town banned parents from its school lunchrooms — and many are not happy. Associated Press. November 28, 2018.)

the change has deprived them of cherished time to check in on their children

Rodriguez was a good daughter to her mother and father, calling regularly to check in on them, Rached said. She was one of five siblings.
(Boston Globe, 2017)

schlub

What’s the point of nabbing a reservation at a hot New York restaurant during the holiday season if you get stuck at the bathroom-adjacent table, sniffing eau de urine and bleach all night long?

Although the top seat in every house varies, in general, the most coveted seats are the “display tables” — those immediately visible to people just walking in, but far away enough from the front door that there’s no draft.
(Melissa Malamut. How to score the best table in a restaurant every time. New York Post. November 27, 2018.)

“Regardless of how you made the reservation, I’m still not putting you at a prominent table unless you are dressed well or extravagantly and look the part,” Woody says.

The same goes at Delmonico’s: You don’t necessarily need a jacket and tie at the buttoned-up spot, but you aren’t getting prioritized if you look like a schlub. Majstrovic suggests checking a restaurant’s website for the dress code, or, if you aren’t very internet-savvy, calling the restaurant in advance to ask.
(ibid.)

A person regarded as clumsy, stupid, or unattractive
(American Heritage Dictionary)

guffaw

Sen. Cindy Hyde-Smith (R-Miss.) laughingly repeated sexist jokes as the keynote speaker at a 2011 Mississippi Farm Bureau convention as the audience guffawed in a recently unearthed video.

It’s the latest controversy to hit the candidate on the eve of a special election as President Donald Trump stumped for her in Mississippi on Monday evening.
(Mary Papenfuss. GOP Candidate Cindy Hyde-Smith Repeated Sexist Jokes At 2011 Convention, Video Shows. Huffington Post. November 26, 2018.)

a loud or boisterous burst of laughter
(Merriam-Webster Dictionary)

high street

Shoppers in Britain were poised to carry on splashing the cash into Cyber Monday, with some forecasts suggesting they planned to spend more than £7bn across Black Friday and the online shopping day.

Millions of bargain hunters are expected to go online on Monday to take advantage of generous bargains, dealing a further blow to the struggling high street as the Christmas shopping bonanza takes off.
(Rebecca Smithers. Cyber Monday to take UK's weekend sales splurge over £7bn. The Guardian. November 26, 2018.)

“High street”

stalemate

Stalemate on Trump’s wall amid threat of shutdown

Congress just can't help itself: With a partial government shutdown potentially two weeks away, Democrats and Republicans are dug in, each side upping its demands and vowing not to buckle to the other.
President Donald Trump is pressuring Republicans to obtain at least $5 billion for his border wall, far more than what Senate Democrats are prepared to give. Democrats in turn are considering pushes for legislation to protect special counsel Robert Mueller and the elimination of a citizenship question from the next census, according to people familiar with the negotiations.
(Burgess Everett. Stalemate on Trump’s wall amid threat of shutdown. Politico. November 21, 2018.)

On Monday, Mr. Ghosn was arrested in Tokyo after a company investigation alleged that he had deceived Japanese financial authorities about his pay package.

According to Tokyo prosecutors, Mr. Ghosn and Greg Kelly, a onetime Nissan human resources manager and current board member, underreported Mr. Ghosn’s compensation between 2011 and 2015 by more than 5 billion yen ($44.5 million). The prosecutors say they declared pay of just under ¥5 billion ($44.3 million), which was half the nearly ¥10 billion ($88.8 million) he actually earned.

Nissan’s board will meet Thursday to consider their removal.

For an executive long lionized in business circles and celebrated by employees, the arrest was a shocking comeuppance. Mr. Ghosn, 64, is credited with turning around two carmakers, Renault and Nissan, and engineering an alliance — with those two companies and then Mitsubishi — that pioneered sharing technologies and cost savings.
(Carlos Ghosn Felt Stars Deserved Big Pay. His Accusers Say He Took That Too Far. New York Times. November 20, 2018.)

the arrest was a shocking comeuppance

come
up
-ance

mealy-mouthed

Trump's mealy-mouthed statement on the Jamal Khashoggi murder is actually prudent

President Trump was right to make a deliberately blurry finding on Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman's culpability for the Oct. 2 murder of Saudi dissident, Jamal Khashoggi at the Saudi consulate in Istanbul, Turkey.

"It could very well be that the crown prince had knowledge of this tragic event," Trump declared Tuesday, "maybe he did and maybe he didn’t."
(Tom Rogan. Trump's mealy-mouthed statement on the Jamal Khashoggi murder is actually prudent. Washington Examiner. November 20, 2018.)

American Heritage Dictionary

Akin to the German expression Mehl im Maule behalten, to be indirect in speech (literally, to have meal in the mouth).

tarred and feathered

Twenty years ago, Monica Lewinsky was a punchline. Now, in the era of #MeToo and Time’s Up, she leaves people speechless.

“She is a hero to young millennial women,” said a source close to Lewinsky. “I have one woman who works in my office who, when she met Monica, was practically in tears.”

Having been publicly tarred and feathered and slut-shamed for years has turned Lewinsky into one of the world’s most popular activists against such behavior.
(Dana Schuster. Monica Lewinsky has finally turned the tables on the Clintons. New York Post. November 17, 2018.)

― attention

It’s the most infamous stained dress in presidential history, but Monica Lewinsky says when she wore it after her widely chronicled hookup with President Bill Clinton, no one noticed.

“I went to dinner that night. None of these people said to me, ‘Hey, you’ve got to go to the bathroom, you’ve got stuff all over your dress,’” Lewinsky said in “The Clinton Affair,” a new A&E series.
(Nikki Schwab. How Monica Lewinsky finally noticed that stain on her dress. New York Post. November 13, 2018.)

“And so we moved to the bathroom and were more intimate. There was some attention paid on me and then I was reciprocating, where up until that point he had always stopped before completion on his part,” Lewinsky said, delicately trying to explain their encounter.
(ibid.)

American Heritageでは、

Acts of consideration or courtesy, especially in an effort to win someone's affection or gain sexual favors

neophyte

At 29 years old, U.S. Representative-elect Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez will be the youngest woman ever in Congress, but her first few days as an elected official have come with challenges — some of which have nothing to do with politics. As Capitol Hill holds orientation meetings this week, the incoming congresswoman said on Twitter that people keep mistaking her for an intern or someone's spouse.

Ocasio-Cortez, who will represent parts of Queens and the Bronx, rose to political stardom after challenging 10-time incumbent Rep. Joseph Crowley and defeating him in the Democratic primary earlier this year.

Ocasio-Cortez has had an eventful week after winning last week's midterm elections. She revealed she can't afford an apartment in D.C. until her congressional salary kicks in. The congressional neophyte has led a charge to push for a climate plan and even joined a protest outside the office of Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, who is vying to be the next Speaker of the House.
(Christopher Brito. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez says people on Capitol Hill keep mistaking her for an intern. CBS News. November 15, 2018.)

The congressional neophyte

Despite making more than $52,000 annually, 30-year-old British digital marketer Sian Teasdale cannot seem to pay her own way in life.

Sure, she banks well over the average UK salary of £27,271 (about $35,452 in US dollars), but Teasdale almost always has “no choice” but to beg for a $130-$650 bailout from mom and dad at the end of every month, she says in a TMI chat with Grazia UK that’s inciting outrage online.
(Hannah Fishberg. Why do millennials expect mom and dad to bail them out? New York Post. November 14, 2018.)

Merriam-Webster(オンライン版)では、「保釈金によって保釈する」(to procure the release of by giving bail)という意味と、「窮状を救う」(to help from a predicament)という意味が"bail"の1つのエントリ下で列挙されています。

sicario

NEW YORK – Opening statements in Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman's trial began Tuesday afternoon, following a delay brought on by a juror who was reportedly "too anxious and too upset" to serve on the jury.

The New York Post reports Juror No. 1 showed up with a doctor's note to back up her claims. This is the same woman who sobbed last week after she was chosen to serve on the jury.

The juror said she feared for her safety because Guzman, the most notorious drug trafficker in the world, is known for hiring sicarios, or hitmen, to kill potential witnesses and anyone helping the prosecution against him.

Federal Judge Brian Cogan recognized these fears and ordered the jurors identities to remain anonymous and to be partially sequestered.
(Brian Llenas. ‘Anxious’ juror in El Chapo trial delays opening statements after she demands to be taken off case. Fox News. November 12, 2018.)

sicario(s)

browbeat

The first was Trump’s reported efforts to raise mailing prices for Amazon, whose CEO Jeff Bezos owns the Washington Post. Trump often highlights the connection by calling it the “Amazon Washington Post.”

Schiff told Axios that Trump was “secretly meeting with the postmaster [general] in an effort to browbeat the postmaster into raising postal rates on Amazon.”

“This appears to be an effort by the president to use the instruments of state power to punish Jeff Bezos and the Washington Post,” he said.

Schiff appeared to be referencing a report from the Washington Post that cited three sources who said Trump had personally attempted to pressure Postmaster General Megan Brennan to double the shipping rates applied to Amazon deliveries.
(Benjamin Goggin. Democrats are reportedly gearing up to investigate Trump’s actions against CNN and the Washington Post. Business Insider. November 11, 2018.)

browbeat

― triple-threaded inquiry

The incoming chairman of the House Intelligence Committee this week said that when the new Congress is seated in January, Democrats plan to scrutinize whether President Trump abused his authority by taking adverse action against retail giant Amazon and two of his bitter left-leaning media rivals: CNN and The Washington Post.

Rep. Adam Schiff, D-Calif., said in an interview with "Axios on HBO" that he and his colleagues will employ committee subpoena powers -- which are backed by the legal threat of contempt of Congress -- to conduct the triple-threaded inquiry into Trump's possible use of the "instruments of state power to punish the press."
(Gregg Re. Dems to probe Trump's treatment of CNN, Amazon, Washington Post in triple-threaded abuse-of-power inquiries. Fox News. November 12, 2018.)

to conduct the triple-threaded inquiry

egghead

a person with intellectual interests or pretensions : a brainy person

But many Washington neighborhoods are becoming more economically homogenous as longtime homeowners move out and increasing housing prices prevent the less affluent from moving in. The eventual result, in many cases, is a Super Zip. And because the contiguous Super Zips are surrounded by areas that are almost as well-off, it's possible to live in a Super Zip and rarely encounter others without college degrees or professional jobs. " It's a megalopolis of eggheads, " said William H. Frey, a demographer with the Brookings Institution.

dog-whistle

Donald Trump and the Republicans have released what has been described as one of the most racist political adverts in recent years and an attempt to rally the president’s base by portraying Central American migrants as police killers set to overrun the country.

The advert, which Mr Trump tweeted with the message “it is outrageous what the Democrats are doing to our country. Vote Republican now”, focusses on Luis Bracamontes, an illegal immigrant twice previously deported, who in 2014 shot and killed two California police officers, and injured a third. The advert shows Bracamontes, who has been sentenced to death, laughing in court and vowing to kill more officers.

Words across the screen read: “Democrats let him into our country. Democrats let him stay.” It then shows migrants pulling on what appears to be a border fence.

The advert, which many have likened to the notorious “Willie Horton” attack advert that was used by Republicans to undermine and derail the 1988 presidential run of Democrat Michael Dukakis, has been widely denounced as racist, seeking as it does, to compare all migrants to a police killer.

Tom Perez, chairman of the Democratic National Committee, called it the “dog-whistle of all dog-whistles”.
(Midterms 2018: Outrage as Trump releases ‘racist dog-whistle’ advert featuring Luis Bracamonte. The Independent. November 2, 2018.)

On Saturday, Don Jr. tweeted an attack against independent Maine Sen. Angus King that could have come straight from the white supremacist Iowa Republican congressman Steve King. It had the standard fearmongering of the “other,” in this case, Syrian and “Somalian” refugees; it criticized Democratic Sen. Chuck Schumer, who is Jewish; and for good measure, it included the dog whistle term “88,” which neo-Nazis use as code for “Heil Hitler.”
(David Boddiger. Donald Trump Jr. Tweets Out a Neo-Nazi Dog Whistle. Splinter News. November 3, 2018.)

walkout

More than 20,000 Google employees and contractors participated in the mass global walkout yesterday to protest the company’s handling of sexual harassment allegations against top executives, according to organizers of the protest who published a Medium post this evening. As of September 30th, 2018, Google had 94,372 full-time and contract employees worldwide, meaning more than 20 percent of the entire company participated in the walkout. The event was sparked by an investigation from The New York Times that revealed how Android co-founder Andy Rubin was paid $90 million upon his exit from the company after it learned of a sexual assault allegation against him.
(Nick Statt. Over 20,000 Google employees participated in yesterday’s mass walkout. The Verge. November 2, 2018.)

walkout

browning of America

(CNN) — "It's the economy, stupid." That famous phrase, coined by James Carville, one of Bill Clinton's strategists, was Clinton's guiding principle in his 1992 campaign to unseat President George H.W. Bush. This slogan reminded Clinton that the best way to win that election was to talk about the economy, since that issue moved voters. And it worked.

Flash forward to the 2018 midterm election and Donald Trump's guiding principle can be best summed up as, "It's the racism, stupid." Trump is playing on his supporters' worst fears of brown immigrants to scare them to the polls.

How can Trump try to energize voters by telling them the economy is great when they don't have more money to spend? Trump gets that, so he's reverting back to playing on white anxieties regarding the browning of America -- which I like to refer to as racism. Or, for those who prefer the more academic term, fear of losing status.
(Dean Obeidallah. Trump is trying to whip up fear about the browning of America. CNN. November 4, 2018.)

browning of America

wrecking ball

USA Today

Donald Trump is campaigning for a Republican Congress like his presidency is at stake – and it may well be.

If the "radical resistance" takes power, "they will move immediately to reverse American progress and to eradicate all of the gains that we have made," Trump said during an airport rally Sunday in Macon, Georgia, the first of two southern stops just two days before congressional elections.

The election will decide "whether we let the radical Democrats take control of Congress and take a giant wrecking ball to our economy," Trump said to a packed basketball arena at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga.
(President Trump: Democrats will take 'a wrecking ball' to American progress if they win control in Congress. USA Today. November 4, 2018.)

(Democrats)... take a giant wrecking ball to our economy

bozo

A bozo is so engrossed in his phone, he doesn’t notice a robbery

Bizarre footage has surfaced from Nova Serrana, Brazil, that shows an armed robbery at a bar. Amazingly, one of the patrons doesn’t notice what’s happening because he’s too focused on his phone. It isn’t until the incident ends that he looks up and notices that something is wrong.

appendix

(CNN) — It may be painful, but there could be an unusual upside to appendicitis: Those who have had their appendix removed are 20% less likely to develop Parkinson's disease, according to a new analysis of more than 1 million people in Sweden.

The tiny organ, which is attached to and opens into the lower end of the large intestine, may contribute to this brain disorder that affects nearly a million Americans, the researchers say. Their study was published Wednesday in the journal Science Translational Medicine.
(Susan Scutti. Had your appendix removed? Your Parkinson's risk may be 20% lower. CNN. November 1, 2018.)

If you’re buying avocados because they’re a superfood, nibbling on dark chocolate because of its antioxidant properties and sipping a soda now and then because you can just work it off at the gym, you’ve been had.

In her new book, “Unsavory Truth: How Food Companies Skew the Science of What We Eat,” Marion Nestle, an NYU professor in nutrition, food studies and public health, delivers unsettling news. A vast amount of nutritional research is funded and influenced by the food industry, who use “science” as a marketing tool, making unhealthy foods seem OK and turning wholesome foods into incredible cure-alls — often against the interest of public health and defying common sense.
(Hailey Ebar. How the food industry fooled us into eating junk. New York Post. October 27, 2018.)

you’ve been had

In public opinion, the bank never seemed to recover from its early portrayal of itself as victim. It didn't take long for rival bankers and pundits to question how such an august institution could be had by a single second-tier trader.
(Christian Science Monitor, 2008)

chomper

An Alabama woman’s $3 finishing touch to her zombie Halloween costume landed her a terrifying trip to the dentist after her fake vampire fangs wouldn’t detach from her actual chompers. Anna Tew, of Mobile County, claims she used the temporary glue that came with the store-purchased fake teeth.

She said her efforts to remove the teeth, which had grown uncomfortably tight in her mouth, went on until around 2 a.m.
(Alexandria Hein. Alabama woman’s zombie Halloween costume turns into medical nightmare after $3 fake teeth get stuck. Fox News. October 30, 2018.)

How many viewers are exercising along with them, one wonders, and how many are just happily enjoying the show with a nice yummy snack in their laps? The only muscles that get a workout are the eyeballs and the chompers. And maybe the finger on the remote control.

box office

NEW YORK – Michael Myers – or is it Jamie Lee Curtis? – can't be stopped. "Halloween" dominated the North American box office for the second straight weekend, carving up an estimated $32 million in ticket sales.
(Jake Coyle. 'Halloween' can't be killed: It's already the biggest film in the franchise's history. USA Today. October 29, 2018.)

American Heritage Dictionary

So named because it was originally an office for the booking of boxes in a theater.

planned obsolescence

Apple and Samsung are being fined €10m and €5m respectively in Italy for the “planned obsolescence” of their smartphones.

An investigation launched in January by the nation’s competition authority found that certain smartphone software updates had a negative effect on the performance of the devices.

Believed to be the first ruling of its kind against smartphone manufacturers, the investigation followed accusations operating system updates for older phones slowed them down, thereby encouraging the purchase of new phones.
(Apple and Samsung fined for deliberately slowing down phones. The Guardian. October 24, 2018.)

planned obsolescence

come out

Four years ago, Tim Cook became the first CEO of a major company to come out as gay. He says he's happy about that distinction — and his decision.

"I'm very proud of it," the Apple (AAPL) CEO told Christiane Amanpour on Wednesday in an exclusive interview for her program on CNN International and PBS. Being gay is "God's greatest gift to me," he said.

Cook came out on October 30, 2014. His sexual orientation had been widely rumored beforehand though he had not confirmed it publicly.
(David Goldman. Tim Cook: Being gay is God's greatest gift to me. CNN. October 24, 2018.)

ところで、"come out"という表現の由来は、"come out of closet"であるとされています。

Cook said he was shocked that he was the first out CEO of a Fortune 500 company. He said he is glad other CEOs have come out since, although that wasn't his goal.

bash

Even free pizza couldn’t attract any pint-size partygoers for a 6-year-old’s birthday.

An Arizona mom says none of her son’s kindergarten friends showed up to his birthday party — after she sent 32 invitations to his classmates.

The boy, Teddy, held a birthday bash on Sunday at Peter Piper Pizza in Tucson, where he and his mother, Sil Mazzini, had been expecting dozens of little girls and boys — as well as the children’s parents — to join them at the restaurant. Mazzini said a few people told her in advance that they couldn’t make it, but she wasn’t prepared for everyone to be no-shows.
(Joshua Rhett Miller. Kindergartner parties alone after no one shows up to birthday bash. New York Post. October 23, 2018.)

birthday bash

a festive social gathering; party
(Merriam-Webster Dictionary)

New Year's Eve bash"です。

under the hammer

Some of the most prized and significant possessions of the brilliant British physicist Stephen Hawking are to go under the hammer at Christie's in London later this month, including a copy of his PhD thesis, a script for the TV series "The Simpsons" and his earliest surviving wheelchair.

Hawking, who was also a cosmologist, astronomer, mathematician and a prolific author, died last March at age 76 having survived a debilitating disease that doctors said would kill him in his 20s. His landmark book a "A Brief History of Time," sold more than 10 million copies.
(Stephen Hawking's most prized possessions go under the hammer. CNN. October 22, 2018.)

go under the hammer

cudgel

REPUBLICANS INSIST that, on the immigration debate, Democrats want an issue, not a solution. That seems a better way of characterizing President Trump’s own immigration approach, which he has publicly urged GOP candidates to weaponize in the midterm elections. In response to a caravan of migrants heading northward from Honduras, Mr. Trump threatened to deploy the military, close the southern border, tear up a just-concluded trade deal with Mexico and Canada, and sever aid to impoverished Central American countries.

Even for a president to whom no issue is immune to overreaction, this latest temper-tantrum was an overreach; the last such migrant caravan from Honduras, in April, mostly dissolved before it reached the U.S. border. Still, Mr. Trump is delighted at the chance of deploying this latest migration as a cudgel. “Great Midterm issue for Republicans!” he tweeted Wednesday.
(Trump’s latest anti-immigrant gambit: Family separation 2.0. The Washington Post. October 19, 2018.)

Mr. Trump is delighted at the chance of deploying this latest migration as a cudgel.

tough cookie

President Trump hosted his third wide-ranging rally of the midterm season in Montana on Thursday night, where he urged voters to "never forget Benghazi" and praised Republican Rep. Greg Gianforte, who pleaded guilty to body slamming a reporter last year, as a "tough cookie."
(Trump praises 'tough cookie' Montana rep who 'body slammed' reporter last year, urges voters to 'never forget Benghazi.’ Fox News. October 19, 2018.)

tough cookie

Even as he talks tough on North Korea, Trump called Kim Jong Un a "smart cookie" and wondered why he won't be his friend.
(USA Today, 2017)

They didn't like what he did to the kids so they padded up the charges. We're going to file multiple charges. We get him on one of them. That's what happens. I mean, this guy is a bad guy. He's a bad cookie.

hold one's feet to the fire

It is now clear the Trump administration will not be holding Saudi feet to the fire over the disappearance of the journalist Jamal Khashoggi. Instead, it’s looking to give them an off-ramp, a route to escape responsibility.

Having waffled between promising “severe punishment” for any official Saudi involvement and speculating about “rogue killers,” President Trump finally revealed his own mind on Tuesday: he compared the international pressure on Riyadh to the allegations of sexual assault against Judge Brett Kavanaugh ahead of his confirmation to the Supreme Court.
(Bobby Ghosh. Who Will Hold Saudi Feet to the Fire? Bloomberg. October 18, 2018.)

Who Will Hold Saudi Feet to the Fire?

holding Saudi feet to the fire over the disappearance of the journalist

posthumous

Stephen Hawking has a final message for humanity: If robots don’t get us, climate change will.

Hawking, who died at age 76 of a degenerative neurological disease earlier this year, offers his parting thoughts in a posthumously published book called Brief Answers To The Big Questions, which comes out Tuesday. It’s a message worth heeding from a man who is probably the most renowned scientist since Einstein, best known for his discovery of how black holes function. Hawking’s book A Brief History of Time sold more than 10 million copies and tackled questions as big as “How did the universe begin?” and “What will happen when it ends?” in language simple enough for the average reader.
(Abigail Higgins. Stephen Hawking’s final warning for humanity: AI is coming for us. VOX. October 16, 2018.)

posthumous(ly)

nigh

It appears that the end is nigh for embattled retailer Sears.

On Tuesday, The Wall Street Journal reported that the company has hired advisors to help it prepare for a possible bankruptcy filing as early as this week.
(Mary Hanbury. Sears, once the largest retailer in the world, is closing hundreds of stores and reportedly planning to file for bankruptcy. Here’s how it got there. Business Insider. October 13, 2018.)

It appears that the end is nigh for embattled retailer Sears.

The Great American Eclipse is nigh! Millions are expected to pack the so-called path of totality, or the swath of the United States that will be able to experience the complete solar eclipse.
(Washington Post, 2017)

The local halibut sportfishing season is nigh and may seem tempting, under the circumstances. But those who seek to catch halibut, according to Seattle Times outdoors reporter Mark Yuasa, sometimes call them "barn doors," because it's like trying to reel one of those up from the ocean floor.

disenfranchise

As a crisis of potential voter suppression in Georgia deepened, the Democratic candidate for governor accused her opponent of seeking to disenfranchise people of color and women by creating a “miasma of fear” around voting.

Stacey Abrams, who if elected would become the first African American woman governor of any state, is running against Georgia’s Republican secretary of state, Brian Kemp.

A lawsuit filed by civil rights groups on Thursday accused Kemp of seeking to disenfranchise more than 50,000 voters, up to 80% of them minority voters, by suspending voters from registration rolls if records held by various state agencies show any slight discrepancy in how a voter’s name is hyphenated, spelled or spaced.
(Stacey Abrams: GOP opponent creating 'miasma of fear' over voting in Georgia. The Guardian. October 14, 2018.)

seeking to disenfranchise more than 50,000 voters

Downing Street

Inside a packed, heavily guarded room in the House of Commons, reporters gathered for an update on Tuesday about the suspects involved in the poisoning of a former Russian spy in Britain this year.

If the subject matter was unusual, so were the people doing the briefing.

They were not prosecutors or counterintelligence officers or even spokesmen from Downing Street. Rather, they were researchers from Bellingcat, an investigative group founded by Eliot Higgins, 39, a blogger who began by posting on a laptop from his apartment while babysitting his infant daughter.
(Armchair Investigators at Front of British Inquiry Into Spy Poisoning. The New York Times. October 9, 2018.)

spokesmen from Downing Street

plow

The chauffeur in the deadly crash in upstate New York was a "great driver" and longtime employee of Prestige Limousine Chauffeur Service, the company's attorney said Tuesday.

For reasons still unknown, the limo plowed through a stop sign and crashed into a parked SUV, causing the deadliest US transportation accident in almost a decade. Federal, state and local investigators have flooded Schoharie to try to understand what happened.
(The driver in the deadly limo crash was a 'reliable employee,' company says. CNN. October 10, 2018.)

the limo plowed through a stop sign and crashed into a parked SUV

to move forcefully into or through something
(Merriam-Webster Dictionary)

(especially of a vehicle) move in a fast and uncontrolled manner

chug

A group of protesters brought beer to Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell’s (R-Ky.) house in Washington hours before a vote to advance the nomination of Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh to the Senate floor on Friday.

Footage of the demonstration showed protesters waving beer cans and red cups as they marched towards the Kentucky Republican’s home, chanting and yelling phrases like, “chug, chug, chug” and "What do we do with a drunken justice?"
(Aris Folley. Kavanaugh protesters bring beer, chant ‘chug’ outside McConnell’s home. The Hill. October 5, 2018.)

chug

lemon on the wounds

Thousands of former Toys R Us employees face an uncertain future after hundreds of stores were closed. But Geoffrey the Giraffe is back to work.

The mascot made a surprise appearance last week at one of the largest wholesale events in the toy industry. That was just days after court filings showed that the owners of Toys R Us might be pursuing a comeback, with the hedge fund that owns the company opting to hold onto the Toys R Us and Babies R Us brand names, Web domains and other assets — including Geoffrey.

To thousands of workers waiting for severance pay and even the chance to get their jobs back, Geoffrey’s fun-filled return felt more like “lemon on the wounds,” said Carrie Gleason, campaign manager for the worker advocacy group Rise Up Retail. Gleason called Geoffrey’s reemergence a “PR stunt” meant to boost the tarnished brand name should Toys R Us try to reopen stores as the holiday season gets underway.
(Geoffrey’s return infuriates laid off Toys R Us workers. The Mercury News. October 8, 2018.)

lemon on the wounds
