mukbang

Mayor Zohran Mamdani did a “mukbang”-style livestream video — munching on Taco Bell and Dunkin’ — to announce an $1.5 million settlement against franchises of the fast food giants Tuesday.

The democratic socialist mayor and his Department of Consumer and Worker Protections Commissioner Sam Levine detailed the deal while scarfing down Crunchwrap Supremes, Baja Blasts, Munchkins and a Mexican-style pizza during a YouTube livestream.

Mukbang is a popular YouTube format where hosts eat large amounts of food while discussing topics.
(Mamdani does ‘mukbang’-style video munching on Taco Bell, Dunkin’ to announce $1.5M fast food settlement. New York Post. March 24, 2026.)

Mukbang refers to a video shared on social media in which the creator films themselves eating large quantities of food, and often provides a review of the food as well. Mukbang can also refer to the genre of such videos.

The word comes from the Korean meokbang, which is a portmanteau of that language's words for “eating” (meok) and “broadcasting” (bang-song).

aura farming

Oxford Dictionary

aura farming

The wait is over—the official Oxford Word of the Year 2025 is rage bait.

Our language experts shortlisted three contenders—rage bait, aura farming, and biohack—that reflect our conversations and preoccupations over the past year. After three days of voting in which more than 30,000 people had their say, our experts chose rage bait after considering votes, the sentiment of public commentary, and their analysis of our lexical data.
(The Oxford Word of the Year 2025 is rage bait. Oxford University Press. December 1, 2025.)

Aura farming is all about cultivating the coolest version of yourself. Think well-tailored suits, lots of grayscale, serious stares and sharp angles.

Kids have always wanted to be cool – now they get to farm for it.

By the simple act of being cool or mysterious: striking a cool pose, or performing great feats of coolness – a strike when you go bowling, flawlessly landing rubbish in the bin from 5 metres away, or completing a new personal best at the gym.
(Explain it to me quickly: What is aura farming, and is it cool or cringe? The Guardian. June 6, 2025.)

It refers to actively curating your personality by choosing the way you look, behaving a certain way, and associating yourself with things that make you desirable, interesting and appear effortlessly cool. It is like cultivating a charisma, an aura, especially on digital mediums.
(Aakanksha Mahendra Ahire. Aura farming: New word in the Gen Z dictionary. Times of India. August 25, 2025.)

rage bait

rage bait

Don't get too upset, but 'rage bait' has been named by Oxford University Press as this year's Word of the Year, beating other online terms.

The group behind the Oxford English Dictionary says the term is a noun which describes online content "deliberately designed to elicit anger or outrage" to boost traffic or engagement.

Casper Grathwohl, president of Oxford Languages, said that "the fact that the word rage bait exists and has seen such a dramatic surge in usage means we're increasingly aware of the manipulation tactics we can be drawn into online".

He added: "Before, the internet was focused on grabbing our attention by sparking curiosity in exchange for clicks, but now we've seen a dramatic shift to it hijacking and influencing our emotions, and how we respond.
(Oxford Dictionary publisher reveals Word of the Year 2025 - do you know it?. Skynews. December 1, 2025.)

smishing

Google filed a lawsuit Wednesday against a foreign cybercriminal group behind a massive SMS phishing, or “smishing,” operation.

Dubbed by some cyber researchers as the “Smishing Triad,” the organization, which Google said is largely based out of China, uses a phishing-as-a-service kit named “Lighthouse” to create and deploy attacks using fraudulent texts.
(Jaures Yip. Google sues cybercriminal group behind E-ZPass, USPS text phishing scams. CNBC. November 12 2025.)

skibidi

Cambridge Dictionary

"Skibidi", "tradwife" and other slang terms popularised on social media are among thousands of new words to be added to the Cambridge Dictionary this year.

Skibidi is a gibberish term which gained popularity via a viral animated video series on YouTube, while tradwife is a shortening of "traditional wife" – a married mother who cooks, cleans and posts on social media.

Skibidi is defined in the dictionary as "a word that can have different meanings such as 'cool' or 'bad', or can be used with no real meaning as a joke". An example of its use is "What the skibidi are you doing?"
(Laura Devlin. 'Skibidi' and 'tradwife' among words added to Cambridge Dictionary. BBC News. August 18, 2025.)

What the skibidi are you doing?

What in the world are you doing?"

A woman’s boyfriend didn’t tell her he quit his job — and then accused her of being unsupportive when she didn’t want to pay the full rent they once split.

The frustrated girlfriend took to the r/AITA_WIBTA_PUBLIC Reddit forum to vent about her situation — which has since been deleted.
(Fabiana Buontempo. Selfish boyfriend secretly quits job — and expects girlfriend to financially support them: ‘Get rid of that man-child’. New York Post. August 10, 2025.)

The OP had to learn of her boyfriend’s impulsive decision to quit his job from their mutual friend.
(ibid.)

…the original poster started to notice that her man was home more than usual, especially during times when he should’ve been at work.
(ibid.)

President Donald Trump's weekend post defending Attorney General Pam Bondi's handling of the Jeffrey Epstein files has triggered an unprecedented backlash, marking the first time the Republican has been "ratioed" on his own social media platform, Truth Social.

The term "ratioed" refers to when a social media post receives more replies than likes or shares, often signaling more disagreement or criticism than support.

In his Saturday evening post, Trump lashed out at those criticizing Bondi, calling her performance "FANTASTIC" and dismissing the ongoing interest in Epstein as a waste of time.
(Trump Gets 'Ratioed' on Truth Social for First Time Amid Epstein Backlash. Newsweek. July 13, 2025.)

text neck, tech neck, or kyphosis

Researchers examined the effects of text neck on the spine and found it can affect alignment when you’re running or walking (not just looking at your phone).

The side effects of text neck may also include added stress to joints of the lower body including the hips, knees, and ankles and limited respiratory function—all of which could affect runners’ performance.
(Elizabeth Millard. Text Neck Side Effects Build Up Over Time and That Can Be a Real Problem for Runners. Runner’s World. October 8, 2024.)

text neck

From looking down at your phone every few minutes to working on a laptop to slouching on the couch for hours, everyday life is rife with moments of poor posture. One of the most pronounced these days is kyphosis, also known as “text neck” or “tech neck.”

This happens when your head is leaning forward in a way that elongates the back of the neck, which can lead to muscle strain, headaches, and even numbness or tingling in the hands and arms.
(ibid.)

kyphosis

subtweet

In the latest development of the OpenAI-is-a-disaster saga, a group of current and former OpenAI employees has gone public with concerns over the company's financial motivations and commitment to responsible AI. In a New York Times report published Tuesday, they described a culture of false promises around safety.

"The world isn't ready, and we aren't ready," Daniel Kokotajlo, a former OpenAI researcher, wrote in an email announcing his resignation, according to the Times report. "I'm concerned we are rushing forward regardless and rationalizing our actions."

Also on Tuesday, the whistleblowers, along with other AI insiders, published an open letter demanding change in the industry. The group calls for AI companies to commit to a culture of open criticism and to promise not to retaliate against those who come forward with concerns.

While the letter isn't specifically addressed to OpenAI, it's a pretty clear subtweet and another damaging development for a company that has taken more than enough hits in the last couple of weeks.
(Madeline Berg. It's all unraveling at OpenAI (again). Business Insider. June 4, 2024.)

While the letter isn't specifically addressed to OpenAI, it's a pretty clear subtweet and another damaging development for a company

a usually mocking or critical tweet that alludes to another Twitter user without including a link to the user's account and often without directly mentioning the user's name

popcorn brain

popcorn brain

Experts are warning of a new medical issue caused by excessive scrolling on social media.

The issue has been dubbed “popcorn brain,” a term used to describe the shifting attention of social media users.

A study published in Nature Communications in 2019, revealed that people’s collective attention spans are becoming increasingly shorter, due to the rapid consumption of social media.

Popcorn brain refers to the tendency for our attention to shift and jump from one thing to another quickly, just like the kernels in a popcorn bag whizzing inside. It’s a  phenomenon in the psychology world, first coined by iSchool researcher David Levy in 2011.
(Ayan Omar. What is 'popcorn brain'? Social media could be ruining our attention span. Yahoo! News. February 16, 2024.)

deplatform

In videos splashed across the internet, Andrew Tate, a onetime kickboxing champion turned self-styled men’s-help guru, has argued that women are the property of their husbands and should “have kids, sit at home, be quiet and make coffee.”

He has claimed that he needs authority over the women he dates, saying, “You can’t be responsible for a dog if it doesn’t obey you.” He has said he would attack a woman who accused him of cheating and described himself as “absolutely a misogynist.”

His fans have called him the king of toxic masculinity.
(Brittany Shammas. TikTok and Meta ban self-described misogynist Andrew Tate. The Washington Post. August 21, 2022.)

Other social media influencers — along with several organizations that support survivors of sexual assault and domestic violence — had called for him to be booted off social media platforms. Hope Not Hate, a Britain-based group that launched a petition calling for Tate to be deplatformed, described him as dangerous.
(ibid.)

"deplatform"

to remove and ban (a registered user) from a mass communication medium (such as a social networking or blogging website)

digital nomad

digital nomad

When Michelle Checchi, 29, left the US in 2019, she only planned to be gone for a few months — as long as it took to drain her savings account.

Today, she's still traversing the globe, working remotely as a freelance writer and video producer — making $4,000 in the typical month while only working 15 to 30 hours per week, according to bank documents reviewed by Insider.

A growing number of digital nomads, or remote workers that travel for weeks, months, or — in her case — "for the foreseeable future." Over 15 million Americans describe themselves as digital nomads, up 42% from 2020 and 112% from 2019, according to MBO Partners' 2021 State of Independence study. Driving this trend is the growing flexibility of remote work, a longing to see the world, and the desire to cut costs.
(Jacob Zinkula. A 29-year-old part-time remote worker living abroad and making $4,000 a month explains how she finds work and affords her lifestyle. Insider. July 31, 2022.)

Authorities in Spain will unfold their plans for the digital nomad visa during the following months in an effort to attract internationals who can temporarily live in Spain while working for companies or clients outside the country.

Such a scheme would also help Spain’s economic sector to recover from the crisis caused by the Coronavirus and its new strains, SchengenVisaInfo.com reports.
(Spain to Create Digital Nomad Visa. News Schengen Visa. January 31, 2022.)

digital presenteeism

New data from Qatalag and GitLab puts a number on it: Knowledge workers waste an extra 67 minutes online each day doing menial tasks for the express purpose of proving to their managers and colleagues that they’re available and working.

It’s taking a strain. The survey polled 2,000 knowledge workers and found that more than half of them (54%) reported feeling pressure to show their online status by replying to emails and Slack messages, adding comments to Google Docs, or updating project management tools.

The report calls this “digital presenteeism.” It’s the remote version of traditional presenteeism, when workers stay at their desk for no reason other than to prove to their bosses they’re working.

Digital presenteeism hinges on that same visibility—whether that means “responding to notifications, or sitting in Zoom meetings you don’t need to attend,” the report says. And, like office presenteeism, it doesn’t correlate to any better work output.
(Jane Thier. Elon Musk says remote workers are just pretending to work. Turns out he’s (sort of) right. Fortune. July 20, 2022.)

firehose

Elon Musk wants to cancel his deal to buy Twitter, but the social media company is having none of it.

On Friday, Musk moved to terminate the $44-billion acquisition agreement, alleging that Twitter breached the deal by failing to hand over data he says he needs to evaluate the number of bots and spam accounts on the platform.

Musk has for weeks expressed concerns, without any apparent evidence, that there are a greater number of bots and spam accounts on the platform than Twitter has said publicly. In his Friday letter, his lawyer alleged that Twitter has "not complied with its contractual obligations" to provide Musk with sufficient data to evaluate the issue, despite having handed over its "firehose" of tweets on the platform.
(Clare Duffy. Twitter's legal team calls Elon Musk's attempt to exit acquisition deal 'invalid and wrongful'. CNN Business. July 11, 2022.)

"firehose"

Now, Twitter apparently plans to provide Musk with its "firehose" of data about tweets on the platform, according to recent reports from the Washington Post and the New York Times. The Twitter firehose is the real-time stream of the millions of public tweets posted on the platform daily and information on the accounts behind them, although it does not contain private information such as the IP address from which the tweet was posted.
(Clare Duffy. Elon Musk pressured Twitter to give him access to a 'firehose' of data to evaluate bots. Now what? CNN Business. June 17, 2022.)

Computing
An unfiltered, real-time stream of data produced by a social media website or other online service.

fexting

WASHINGTON (AP) — When President Joe Biden and first lady Jill Biden disagree, they don’t hash it out in front of other people. Instead, she says, they argue by text — “fexting” as they call it.

Jill Biden also told Harper’s Bazaar magazine in an interview that her divorce from her first husband taught her to be independent and that she has drilled that lesson into her daughter and granddaughters.
(Darlene Superville. Jill Biden says she, president settle arguments by ‘fexting’. The Associated Press. May 31, 2022.)

fighting and texting

But while the Bidens might think the slang term is a cute amalgamation of the words “fighting” and “texting,” Urban Dictionary defines the word as a crude colloquialism that actually means “f–king while texting.”
(Andrew Court. Jill and Joe Biden reveal ‘fexting’ — but may not know term’s obscene roots. New York Post. May 31, 2022.)

There have been a lot of emotions this week around the New York Times’s seven-figure acquisition of the word deduction game, Wordle — especially on Twitter. The reactions range from frustration to glee to snark.

The game has become a ritual for the millions who play it daily. Our brains crave the pattern-seeking custom Wordle humbly provides, helping it become a perfect pandemic game. The interface is simple, free from ads and has a heartwarming origin story.

But what does the future hold for Wordle? The Times says the game will “initially remain free to new and existing players.” But it’s not clear what the time frame for “initially” really is, and some have theorized that the game will eventually end up behind The Times’s paywall.
(Rachel Orr. Worried Wordle may go behind a paywall? Here are 8 alternatives. The Washington Post. February 3, 2022.)

the game will eventually end up behind The Times’s paywall

a system that prevents Internet users from accessing certain Web content without a paid subscription

metaverse

Nike announced its first substantial foray into the metaverse yesterday (Dec. 13) with the purchase of RTFKT (pronounced “artifact,” of course), a non-fungible token (NFT) studio that produces digital collectibles, including virtual sneakers. They did not disclose the value of the deal.

“This acquisition is another step that accelerates Nike’s digital transformation and allows us to serve athletes and creators at the intersection of sport, creativity, gaming and culture,” said Nike president John Donahoe. Nike last indicated it was getting into the metaverse in November, when it quietly filed over half a dozen of its signature trademarks with the US Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) “for use online and in online virtual worlds.”

With the acquisition of RTFKT, Nike is one step closer to offering goods emblazoned with its signature swoosh to online communities. The opportunity looks lucrative—while RTFKT has only been around since 2020, it’s already raked in millions of dollars for virtual sneakers.
(Courtney Vinopal. Nike’s purchase of RTFKT hints at what its metaverse will look like. Quartz. December 14, 2021.)

killware

As most Americans are still learning about the hacking-for-cash crime of ransomware, the nation’s top homeland security official is worried about an even more dire digital danger: killware, or cyberattacks that can literally end lives.
(Josh Meyer. The next big cyberthreat isn't ransomware. It's killware. And it's just as bad as it sounds. USA Today. October 13, 2021.)

A short glimpse in recent history shows us that attacks on OT (Operational Technology) are nothing new. Just think about the Maroochi Shire incident in 2000, Stuxnet in 2009 or Industroyer in 2016. A stark example is the Triton malware first identified in December 2017 on the OT systems of a petrochemical facility. Its purpose was to disable the safety instrumented system (SIS) built to shut down the plant in case of a hazardous event. If the malware had been effective then loss of life was highly likely.  It is not unreasonable to assume that this was an intended result. Hence “malware” has now entered the realm of “killware”.
(Wam Voster. The Emergence of Killware, the Lethal Malware. July 21, 2021.)

finsta

Sen. Richard Blumental asked a top Facebook executive on Thursday if the company would “commit to ending ‘finsta'” – apparently unaware of the term’s true meaning.

Blumenthal (D-Conn.) questioned Facebook’s Global Head of Safety Antigone Davis as part of a Senate committee hearing that followed a Wall Street Journal report that the company’s internal research had found its platform Instagram makes “body image issues worse for one in three teen girls.”

There were several seconds of silence before Davis answered.

“Senator, again, let me explain,” she began. “We don’t actually – we don’t actually do ‘finsta’.
(Samuel Chamberlain. Sen. Richard Blumenthal asks Facebook exec to ‘end finsta’ at hearing. New York Post. September 30, 2021.)

fungible

The world’s digital answer to collectibles that has fetched millions of dollars at art auctions this year could well end up being a daily necessity within a decade, according to a cryptocurrency doyen

Non-fungible tokens, which are digital certificates of authenticity powered by blockchain technology, have the potential to add value for not just artworks but also everyday essentials such as retail goods, according to William Quigley, a co-founder of stablecoin Tether.

“All consumer products—that can’t be eaten—in the next 10 years will have digital twins. They will have NFTs,” Quigley said in a recent interview.
