dimwit

A dimwit driver who left an unattended rental car at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport on Sunday, causing the delay of about 300 flights and cancellation of dozens of others, is facing nothing more than a measly traffic ticket.
(Joshua Rhett Miller. Dimwit driver gets only a parking ticket for causing massive scare at airport. September 12, 2018.)

wingman

US Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh has been accused of sexual misconduct by three different women—Christine Blasey Ford, Deborah Ramirez, and Julie Swetnick. Now, a fourth woman, Elizabeth Rasor, has written to the Senate Judiciary Committee to say that she’s willing to speak with the FBI about what she learned from the nominee’s high-school wingman, Mark Judge, who was implicated by two of the three women and is Rasor’s former boyfriend.
(Ephrat Livni. A witness offers to testify about Brett Kavanaugh’s high school wingman. Quartz. September 27, 2018.)

A person who helps, guides, or supports another, especially one who assists a friend in trying to seduce another person

venal

Let’s say you were elected to public office, nationally or locally. What would you do with that opportunity? Would you seek to improve your constituents’ quality of life, or would you focus on what’s in it for you?

Unfortunately, we have far too many examples of politicians choosing the latter.

Corruption and self-serving political behavior are everywhere. With news that the current president’s personal lawyer and campaign manager are guilty of multiple counts including tax evasion, bank fraud and campaign finance violations, it is hard to avoid the presumption that this venal behavior is tightly connected to and possibly directed by the man at the top.
(Steve Markbreiter. Enough with self-serving politicians here, elsewhere. The Riverdale Press. September 2, 2018.)

この"venal"はラテン語で売却を意味する名詞venus(ヴィーナスのVenusとスペルは同じですが別の単語です)から来ています。

prime

One of the world's most renowned mathematicians showed how he solved the 160-year-old Riemann hypothesis at a lecture on Monday — and he will be awarded $1 million if his solution is confirmed.

Sir Michael Atiyah, who has won the two biggest prizes in mathematics — the Fields Medal and Abel Prize — took the stage at the Heidelberg Laureate Forum in Germany on Monday to present his work.

To solve the hypothesis you need to find a way to predict the occurrence of every prime number, even though primes have historically been regarded as randomly distributed.

Aityah's (sic) solution will need to be checked by other mathematicians and then published before it is fully accepted and he can claim the prize from the Clay Mathematics Institute of Cambridge.
(Bill Bostock. Top mathematician says he solved the 'single most important open problem' in math after 160 years. Business Insider. September 25, 2018.)

orgy

Tim Cook personally rejected a show based on Dr. Dre’s life that featured drugs, guns and an orgy, the Wall Street Journal reported in an in-depth story about Apple’s streaming strategy. The insight comes as Apple is pushing forward on its quest to compete with Netflix—only with less cursing, fewer (if any) sex scenes, and tamer subject matter.
(Emma Hinchliffe. Tim Cook Killed Apple’s Dr. Dre-Inspired TV Series Because It Was Too Violent, Report Says. Forbes. September 23, 2018.)

Daniels also disses Trump for his performance in the sack.
(Yaron Steinbuch. Hope you aren’t eating when you read this, because Stormy Daniels went there. New York Post. September 18, 2018.)

bargaining chip

Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin attend a session of the Eastern Economic Forum in Vladivostok, Russia, on September 12.

Japan, the world’s third-biggest economy, has a strong bargaining chip in keeping trade and business with Russia germane to the discussion, especially because access to the islands is lucrative in terms of fish and natural resources.
(Damien Sharkov. Putin Wants to End World War Two, Sign Peace Deal With Japan This Year. Newsweek. September 12, 2018.)

Japan... has a strong bargaining chip in keeping trade and business with Russia

Trump's rhetoric on China has softened since his days on the campaign trail. Back then he blasted China for "raping" the U.S. economy, militarizing the South China Sea and failing to do more to stop North Korea. After the election he even threatened to use the One China policy regarding Taiwan as a bargaining chip to get better trade terms.
(Colorado Springs Gazette, 2017)

この例では、"regard ~ as a bargaining chip"という形になっていますが、このほか"use ~ as a bargaining chip"などのパターンが見られます。

nitty-gritty

If there were a North Korea charm offensive, it likely involved Kim Yo Jong to some degree.

Her role in government is to shape propaganda, from government statements and press coverage to movies, says North Korea expert Michael Madden, a fellow at Stimson, which specializes in North Korea analysis on the website 38 North.

Madden describes Kim Yo Jong as something of a White House chief of staff, involved in everything from the regime's "nitty gritty" to decision-making: nuclear missile tests, intelligence, foreign policy, her brother's schedule, logistics and security.
(Sean Rossman. The women who lift N. Korea leader Kim Jong Un's image: sister Kim Yo Jong, wife Ri Sol Ju. USA Today. September 18, 2018.)

involved in everything from the regime's "nitty gritty" to decision-making

Let's skip the chitchat and get down to the nitty-gritty.

boogie-board

A man died Saturday afternoon from injuries suffered during a shark attack off Cape Cod, authorities said, the first fatal shark attack in Massachusetts in eight decades.

Bystanders pulled a 26-year-old bite victim onto Newcomb Hollow Beach and performed CPR, Wellfleet Police Lt. Michael Hurley said in a statement. The man, who had been boogie-boarding with another person, according to the Associated Press, was sent to Cape Cod Hospital, where he later died, Hurley said. The Boston Globe identified the victim as Arthur Medici, from Revere, Massachusetts, a city just northeast of Boston and about a two-hour drive from Wellfleet.
(Man Surfing At US Beach Killed In Shark Attack. NDTV. September 17, 2018.)

boogie-boarding

cagey

The characters from “Sesame Street” are quietly getting pulled from Pampers — and it might be because they’re mostly dudes.

The stealthy Muppet removal was confirmed by officials at Sesame Street and Procter & Gamble — the consumer-products giant that makes Pampers. But when asked by The Post, spokespeople were cagey about the reasons.
(Lisa Fickenscher. Pampers quietly pulls ‘Sesame Street’ characters from diapers. New York Post. September 16, 2018.)

Merriam-Webster Dictionary

wary of being trapped or deceived

VUCA

Attention: Your acronym of the day is VUCA.

VUCA stands for “volatile, uncertain, complex, and ambiguous,” a handy shortcut used by the military to describe these uncertain times, and a framework to shape its leadership programs.

But VUCA is an important signal for more than military educators. Change is coming at us with bewildering speed, driven by globalization, demographics, the corrosive effect of increasing inequality, and the seductive quicksilver of technologies ranging from artificial intelligence and blockchain to nanotechnology and quantum computing. We all must be preparing for the challenges of a VUCA world.
(Education is not preparing students for a fast-changing world. The Boston Globe. September 12, 2018.)

volatile
uncertain
complex
ambiguous

obfuscate

The two suspects in the poisoning of ex-Russian spy Sergei Skripal and his daughter are civilians, not criminals, Russian President Vladimir Putin says.

The UK government had named them as Alexander Petrov and Ruslan Boshirov, and said they were from Russia's military intelligence service, the GRU.

Mr Putin said he hoped the men would tell their story soon.

Downing Street said that Russia has repeatedly been asked to account for what happened in Salisbury.

The prime minister's official spokesman said that Moscow "had replied with obfuscation and lies".
(Skripal poisoning: Putin says suspects 'civilians, not criminals.' BBC News. September 12, 2018.)

Moscow "had replied with obfuscation and lies"

vantage point

Tuesday marks 17 years since the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks and images shared by NASA provide a unique and painful vantage point of the tragedy.

The image of New York City, embedded above, was taken on the morning of Sept. 11, 2001.

The image embedded below was taken on Sept. 12, 2001 at 11:30 a.m. EST, with smoke still billowing from ground zero.
(Catherine Clifford. NASA took these images of 9/11 from space 17 years ago. CNBC. September 12, 2018.)

Katyusha rocket

BASRA, Iraq -- Unknown assailants fired three Katyusha rockets at Iraq's Basra airport Saturday, an airport official said, after a chaotic and violent night that saw hundreds of protesters burning tires on main streets and highways and setting ablaze the Iranian consulate in the city. The protests in Basra are the most serious to shake Iraq's oil-rich southern Shiite heartland in years.

Protesters are calling for an end to endemic corruption, soaring joblessness and poor public services and have turned their rage on neighboring Iran, blaming its outsized influence in Iraq's political affairs for their misery.
(Katyusha rockets fired at Basra airport in Iraq after violent night of protests, official says. CBS News. Septmber 8, 2018.)

"Katyusha rockets"

The name “Katyusha” was not the official designation for the weapon — it was more of an affectionate moniker devised by rank-and-file soldiers. The original BM-13 launchers were manufactured at plant known as the Voronezy Komintern and accordingly bore a large “K” stamp on the side.
(Stalin’s Organ – 10 Things You Didn’t Know About Russia’s Katyusha Rocket. MilitaryHistoryNow.com. October 10, 2014.)

goose-step

With no long-range missiles on display, North Korea staged a military parade on Sunday focused on conventional arms, peace and economic development as it marked the 70th anniversary of the country's founding.

The reduced display compared to past years earned a thank you note from U.S. President Donald Trump, who hailed it as a "big and very positive statement from North Korea."

In Pyongyang, line upon line of goose-stepping soldiers and columns of tanks shook the ground before giving way to chanting crowds waving flags and flowers as they passed a review stand where North Korean leader Kim Jong Un sat with a special envoy from China, as well as other visiting foreigners.
(North Korea leaves missiles out of military parade, hinting at denuclearization. CNBC. September 9, 2018.)

line upon line of goose-stepping soldiers

written up

Cincinnati police investigators said an officer who deployed a Taser to stop an 11-year-old girl from shoplifting violated the department's use of force policy, but also found problems with his telling the girl: "You know, sweetheart, this is why there’s no grocery stores in the black community.”

The comment was caught on Officer Kevin Brown's body camera and is the second time the officer is accused of making inappropriate comments while doing his job. Two years ago he was written up for using a homophobic slur in reference to an alleged domestic violence victim, though the woman did not hear him.
(Cop who used Taser on girl: 'This is why there’s no grocery stores in the black community.' Cincinnati Enquirer. September 4, 2018.)

Two years ago he was written up for using a homophobic slur...

To report (someone) in writing, as for breaking the law
(American Heritage Dictionary)

Jones has been written up more than 20 times for allegedly physically or sexually assaulting patients and selling drugs.

tease

Samsung teases foldable smartphone launch for later this year

Samsung is planning to launch a foldable smartphone later this year. CNBC reports that Samsung CEO DJ Koh hinted the device could be unveiled at Samsung’s developer conference in November, but it’s not clear if consumers will actually be able to purchase the foldable phone this year. Koh admitted that the mystery device had been “complicated” to develop, and rumors have suggested Samsung will launch a phone with a bendable display under the company’s Galaxy Note line.
(Tom Warren. Samsung teases foldable smartphone launch for later this year. The Verge. September 4, 2018.)

Samsung teases foldable smartphone launch

to tantalize especially by arousing desire or curiosity often without intending to satisfy it
(Merriam-Webster Dictionary)

swoosh

Some sliced the swooshes right out of their socks. Others lit their shoes aflame, and filmed while they burned in their yards. All had strong feelings about Nike's new “Just Do It” campaign and one of its newest faces: Colin Kaepernick.

Nike revealed on Monday that Kaepernick — the out-of-work NFL quarterback who generated controversy for kneeling during the national anthem to protest racial injustice and police brutality — would be featured in its 30th anniversary “Just Do It” campaign.
(People are destroying their Nike gear to protest the Colin Kaepernick ‘Just Do It’ campaign. The Washington Post. September 4, 2018.)

swoosh

kayak

A family's vacation on Lake Superior took a tragic turn when a kayak capsized, killing the father and three young children and leaving the mother as the sole survivor.

Cari Mews, 29, and Erik Fryman, 39, took their children on an end-of-the-summer trip to visit the Apostle Islands on Lake Superior in northern Wisconsin. The family of five from Loyal, Wisconsin, vacationed in the area last year and looked forward to visiting again, Bobi Jo Mews, Cari's sister, told CNN affiliate WCCO.
(Mother is the only survivor after a family of five's kayak capsizes on Lake Superior. CNN. September 3, 2018.)

President Trump issued a four-word reply Saturday after several speakers at weekend funerals for singer Aretha Franklin and U.S. Sen. John McCain made him a focus of their remarks.

“MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!” the president tweeted around 7 p.m. ET.

Earlier Saturday, Meghan McCain, daughter of the late Arizona Republican, had alluded to Trump's slogan during her eulogy for her father, who died of brain cancer at age 81 on Aug. 25.

“The America of John McCain has no need to be made great again because America was always great,” McCain said at a memorial service at the National Cathedral in Washington.
