scabies

LAFAYETTE, Georgia — A Georgia nursing home resident who died from a scabies infestation is believed to have been eaten alive over the course of months or years.

According to a pending lawsuit filed by the family, 93-year-old Rebecca Zeni died in 2015 from scabies at the facility. The autopsy report shows the cause of death as “septicemia due to crusted scabies.” State health officials were notified about a scabies outbreak at the nursing home multiple times, but did not inspect the LaFayette, Ga. facility.

Scabies is a painful, but treatable skin condition caused when parasitic mites burrow into your skin, lay eggs and survive off of your body.
(Former model eaten alive by scabies in Georgia nursing home. USA Today. April 29, 2018.)

― incel

The deadly van attack in Toronto is shining a spotlight on the controversial, often misogynistic world of "incels."

The term incel is short for "involuntarily celibate," and the community that uses the label is typically dominated by men voicing frustration online about their lack of sexual relationships, sometimes blaming women for their failures with the opposite sex.

Toronto police said Tuesday that Alek Minassian, the 25-year-old suspected of driving the van that plowed into pedestrians on a busy stretch of Yonge Street in Toronto's north end Monday, killing 10 people, is alleged to have published "a cryptic post on Facebook minutes before he began driving the rented van."

Minassian has been charged with 10 counts of first-degree murder and 13 counts of attempted murder. Fourteen people remain in hospital.
(Facebook post linked to Toronto van attack points to insular, misogynistic world of 'incels.' CBC News. April 25, 2018.)

involuntarily celibate

The term incel grabbed headlines last November when the online discussion platform Reddit banned the community and its main thread — r/Incels — for violating its policy against content that glorifies or incites violence.

At the time, the group had more than 40,000 members.

But other forums are laced with suggestions that at least some of the discussions are merely satire or a way of blowing off steam.

Golden state

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (Reuters) - An elderly former policeman has been arrested and charged with eight murders attributed to the Golden State Killer, a serial criminal responsible for dozens of rapes and slayings that terrorized parts of California during the 1970s and 1980s, authorities said on Wednesday.

The suspect was identified at a Sacramento news conference as Joseph James DeAngelo, 72, in a case officials said was finally solved by DNA evidence about two months after gaining renewed attention in the bestselling book, “I’ll Be Gone in the Dark.”
(Ex-California policeman arrested in 'Golden State' serial killer case. Reuters. April 26, 2018.)

the Golden State Killer

tipsy

Booze can make you tipsy. The same goes for the balance of bacteria in your mouth, which has potentially serious health consequences.

Researchers report that compared to teetotalers, men and woman who have more than one alcoholic drink a day have more harmful oral bacteria linked to gum disease, heart disease and cancer.

The study, led by epidemiologist Jiyoung Ahn of NYU Langone Health in New York and published in Microbiome, is based on a pair of large surveys involving more than 1,000 people that included data on drinking habits and oral samples.
(Joe Dziemianowicz. Alcohol is throwing off the bacteria balance in your mouth. New York Daily News. April 24, 2018.)

Booze can make you tipsy.

The same goes for the balance of bacteria...

What began as a simple boarding dispute at Miami International Airport escalated into a tour de force of plane drama on Sunday as a belligerent passenger was repeatedly stunned by police, forcibly carried out of his seat, then driven through the terminal with his head hanging out the back of a golf cart like a man in a stockade.

All that was before, police say, Jacob Garcia lunged for an officer’s gun and kicked out a squad car window.
(Aci Selk. ‘Tase me, and you’ll see what happens,’ an American Airlines passenger said. Police did — 10 times. The Washington Post. April 23, 2018.)

tour de force of plane drama

In Mr. Grigorescu's 1978 tour de force, "Dialogue With President Ceausescu," the artist plays the roles of interviewer and interviewee and gets to say exactly what he wants to a man he despises, fears and will never meet.
(New York Times, 2015)

flog

The internet giant keeps a detailed log of users' web browsing and location history stretching back nearly a decade, even when people think their privacy is protected in 'incognito' mode.

In just one year the company stores enough browsing data to fill 569,555 pages of A4 paper, an investigation by The Mail on Sunday revealed.

The personal information - plundered from the Google-owned search engine, GPS system, maps, email and YouTube - registers everything from what time users leave for work, to where they go and what transport they use.

If printed and piled up, the pages would measure more than 189ft.

Some 23,731 pages worth of data were reportedly collected on one individual over just a fortnight, which would reach 7ft 9in if physically stacked.
(Charlie Parker. Google collects enough data on you to fill an 8ft stack of paper every TWO WEEKS… then it flogs the info to the highest bidder. The Sun. April 22, 2018.)

to sell (something, such as stolen goods) illegally
(Merriam-Webster Dictionary)

heebie-jeebies

If handling raw meat in the kitchen gives you — or your favorite millennial — the heebie-jeebies, a new touch-free product may be the answer to your prayers.

On April 15, major British supermarket chain Sainsbury’s announced that they will roll out touch-free packaging on their store brand raw chicken in a few weeks so anxious cooks can avoid contact with the moist meat, The Sunday Times reports.

Sainsbury’s was inspired to roll out the new offering after a focus group found that 37 percent of millennials reported that they “preferred not to handle raw meat” while they cooked their meals, according to the Telegraph.
(Janine Puhak. Market creates ‘touch-free chicken’ for millennials scared of raw meat. New York Post. April 19, 2018.)

heist

STOCKHOLM -- A man suspected of masterminding the theft of about 600 computers used to mine bitcoins and other virtual currencies has likely fled to Sweden after breaking out of a prison in Iceland, officials said Wednesday. Swedish police spokesman Stefan Dangardt said no arrest had been made in Sweden but Icelandic police have briefed them on the situation and issued an international arrest warrant.

Police in Iceland said they believe Sindri Thor Stefansson fled a low-security prison through a window and boarded a flight to Sweden at Iceland's international airport in Keflavik.

Stefansson was among 11 people arrested for allegedly stealing the powerful computers in a series of four burglaries in December and January in what is considered Iceland's biggest-ever heist.
("Bitcoin heist" suspect reportedly flees on flight with Icelandic leader. CBS News. April 18, 2018.)

doppelganger

Investigators are on the hunt for a 56-year-old Minnesota woman wanted for allegedly shooting her husband to death, then targeting and killing a Florida woman who looked like her.

She has crossed several states in the alleged killing spree that has spanned 1,500 miles and she hasn't been caught yet. She is expected to continue targeting other women who look like her to steal their identities, authorities said.
(Emily Shapiro. Woman on the run after allegedly killing husband, doppelganger in multi-state crime spree. ABC News. April 17, 2018.)

doppelganger

next to nothing

Donald Trump’s strike on Syria will achieve next to nothing

Soon, perhaps by the time you read these words, President Trump will launch a missile strike against Syria.

It may be small; it may be large. It may include French and British aircraft as well as U.S. missiles. Either way, it will enable Trump to declare victory and applaud his own resolve, probably on Twitter. (That’s where he issued his missile warning on Wednesday: “Get ready Russia, because they will be coming, nice and new and ’smart!’”)

But the attack won’t have much effect, because it isn’t connected to a clear, coherent strategy.
(Doyle McManus. Donald Trump’s strike on Syria will achieve next to nothing. Newsday. April 13, 2018.)

Donald Trump’s strike on Syria will achieve next to nothing

To stay fed and housed, urban refugees need jobs, and Jordan already has 30 percent unemployment. Without work permits, refugees are vulnerable to exploitation, and many end up working for next to nothing.
(Christian Science Monitor, 2012)

Activists throughout the world typically offer a picture of impoverished boys and girls working under hazardous conditions for next-to-nothing wages.

slimeball

Former FBI Director James B. Comey and the president who fired him lobbed rhetorical bombs at each other Sunday, with Comey calling President Trump "morally unfit" and Trump suggesting the former FBI director should be imprisoned.

Asked in an interview broadcast Sunday on ABC whether he thought Russia "has something" on Trump, Comey said he believed that was "possible."

Hours earlier, Trump blasted Comey with a vicious series of tweets attacking the former FBI chief as a "slimeball" and "slippery" and claiming that he "hardly knew this guy."

"Slippery James Comey, a man who always ends up badly and out of whack (he is not smart!), will go down as the WORST FBI Director in history, by far!" the president tweeted.
(Joseph Tanfani. 'Slimeball' versus 'mob boss': War of words escalates between president and former FBI director. Los Angeles Times. April 15, 2018.)

slimeball

A despicable or disgusting person
(American Heritage Dictionary)

My friend Barbara Wagner gulped when the rib-eye cut she and her husband recently ordered medium-rare at Wolfgang’s on East 54th Street came to the table.

“We gasped. The outside was seared — it looked like a normal steak — but when we cut into it, it was practically raw,” says Wagner, a real estate publicist. “So we sent it back.” It was refired to perfection and she said she’ll go back to Wolfgang’s.

But chew on this, steak lovers: Your medium-rare cut is getting rarer, in both senses of the word.

Both incidents reflected the new, medium-rare confusion. While getting an underdone steak has been a possibility for decades, what’s really given the phenomenon traction is that chefs are under bottom-line pressure to reduce throwaways that occur when customers say a steak is too well-done. An under-cooked steak, on the other hand, can always be salvaged with a touch more fire as my friend’s was.
(Steve Cuozzo. Restaurants are cooking your steak wrong on purpose. New York Post. April 10, 2018.)

Your medium-rare cut is getting rarer, in both senses of the word.

chefs are under bottom-line pressure to reduce throwaways that occur when customers say a steak is too well-done

The bottom-line is that...

concerned only with cost or profits

Moody said Hickenlooper should apply his 'business, bottom-line mentality' to cutting spending such as travel and outside consulting contracts, not city jobs or pay.
(Denver Post, 2003)

yikes

I Downloaded the Information That Facebook Has on Me. Yikes.

When I downloaded a copy of my Facebook data last week, I didn’t expect to see much. My profile is sparse, I rarely post anything on the site, and I seldom click on ads. (I’m what some call a Facebook “lurker.”)

But when I opened my file, it was like opening Pandora’s box.

With a few clicks, I learned that about 500 advertisers — many that I had never heard of, like Bad Dad, a motorcycle parts store, and Space Jesus, an electronica band — had my contact information, which could include my email address, phone number and full name. Facebook also had my entire phone book, including the number to ring my apartment buzzer. The social network had even kept a permanent record of the roughly 100 people I had deleted from my friends list over the last 14 years, including my exes.

There was so much that Facebook knew about me — more than I wanted to know.
(Brian X Chen. I Downloaded the Information That Facebook Has on Me. Yikes. New York Times. April 11, 2018.)

Yikes

booster seat

Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg sat in a big-boy seat on Tuesday — as he used a height-boosting cushion during his grilling before the Senate.

The 5-foot-7 executive squirmed in a chair that included a 4-inch-thick pad under his behind while being blasted for hours with questions from lawmakers about his social network’s handling of user data.

“Mark Zuckerberg’s chair on Capitol Hill has a nice big extra cushion,” tweeted The Washingtonian, which first noticed the seat booster.
(David K Li. Mark Zuckerberg used a booster seat to testify before Congress. New York Post. April 10, 2018.)

time served

A former JetBlue flight attendant who ran from security after ditching 60 pounds of cocaine at Los Angeles International Airport has been sentenced to time served.

Marsha Gay Reynolds pleaded guilty last year to conspiracy to possess and distribute cocaine. She was arrested in March 2016.
(JetBlue flight attendant who ditched 60 pounds of cocaine at airport sentenced to time served. Fox News. April 9, 2018.)

sentenced to time served

sentenced to 10 years in prison

Citing her cooperation with prosecutors, a judge on Monday sentenced Reynolds to time she has already served in custody. City News Service reports she is likely to be released shortly. She'll spend three years on supervised release.
(ibid.)

time she has already served in custody

President Trump warned there would be a “big price to pay” for a deadly chemical weapons attack in Syria, and called out Russian President Vladimir Putin by name Sunday for backing the leadership believed to have been behind the atrocious assault.

Trump, in a foreign policy Twitter tirade, also took swipes at Iran and President Obama for allowing the lengthy civil war to take such a gruesome turn, as the administration mulls a slew of responses.

“Many dead, including women and children, in mindless CHEMICAL attack in Syria,” Trump tweeted Sunday morning.

“Area of atrocity is in lockdown and encircled by Syrian Army, making it completely inaccessible to outside world. President Putin, Russia and Iran are responsible for backing Animal Assad.”
(Terrence Cullen. Trump says 'big price to pay' for Syria chemical attack, blasts Putin by name for backing 'Animal Assad' New York Daily News. April 8, 2018.)

Animal Assad

A human considered with respect to his or her physical nature, as opposed to rational or spiritual nature.

A person having a specified aptitude or set of interests
(American Heritage Dictionary)

Merriam-Webster Dictionary

Middle English, from Old English talente, from Latin talenta, plural of talentum unit of weight or money, from Greek talanton pan of a scale, weight; akin to Greek tlēnai to bear; in senses 3–5, from the parable of the talents in Matthew 25:14–30 — more at tolerate
(Merriam-Webster)

unit of weight or money

food insecure

As college students grapple with the rising costs of classes and books, mortgaging their futures with student loans in exchange for a diploma that they're gambling will someday pay off, it turns out many of them are in great financial peril in the present, too.

More than a third of college students don't always have enough to eat and they lack stable housing, according to a survey published Tuesday by researchers at Temple University and the Wisconsin HOPE Lab.

Overall the study concluded 36 percent of college students say they are food insecure. Another 36 percent say they are housing insecure, while 9 percent report being homeless. The results are largely the same as last year's survey, which included fewer students.
(Vanessa Romo. Hunger And Homelessness Are Widespread Among College Students, Study Finds. NPR. April 4, 2018.)

36 percent of college students say they are food insecure

an insecure ladder (ぐらぐらしたはしご)

they are food insecure

(they are) housing insecure

When he discovered how many food insecure people were living around him, Jonathan made a big change on his farm.
(USA Today, 2016)

The portion of individuals living in "food insecure" households, which can't always buy sufficient and healthy food, increased from 16.4 percent to 18.1 percent between 2009 and 2012 in Travis County.
(Austin, 2014)

birther

(CNN) — A political appointee at the Department of Defense has resigned after a CNN KFile inquiry about controversial postings he made on Facebook.

A CNN KFile review of his social media found that Johnson posted birther conspiracies about then-President Barack Obama and shared a video that claimed Obama was the Antichrist.
(Trump appointee at Defense Department resigns after CNN reveals birther postings. CNN. April 4, 2018.)

birther conspiracies

birther movement

A person who denies that Barack Obama was born in the United States and asserts that he therefore became president in violation of the requirements of the US Constitution.
(American Heritage Dictionary)

null and void

Lawyers for President Donald Trump are asking a federal judge to order that an arbitrator resolve a dispute with Stormy Daniels, a former adult film actress, over an alleged “hush money” agreement reached weeks before the 2016 presidential election as she shopped a story about an alleged sexual liaison with Trump a decade earlier.

Daniels, whose real name is Stephanie Clifford, filed suit against Trump in a state court in Los Angeles last month and urged a judge to declare the $130,000 deal null and void because Trump never signed it.
(Josh Gerstein. Trump moves to force Stormy Daniels suit into arbitration. Politico. April 2, 2018.)

null and void

MSG

A woman who thought she had bad Chinese food had the surprise of her life when she discovered that her excruciating pain wasn't the result of too much MSG or a two-day-old egg roll.

She was actually pregnant.

Very pregnant.

Crystal Gail Amerson thought she was suffering from food poisoning early Sunday when she awoke to stomach pains that had her running to the bathroom, according to the Pensacola News Journal.
(Malanie Dadourian. Baby surprise: Woman mistakes 37-week pregnancy for bad Chinese food. Fox News. March 31, 2018.)

too much MSG or a two-day-old egg roll

monosodium glutamate
