iron grip

昨日、衆議院が解散しました。

総選挙となりますが、今回の解散については自民党による恣意的な解散だとの批判が強くあります。

安倍首相はこの時期の解散・総選挙であれば勝てると踏んだところがあるようですが、小池東京都知事が代表を務める新党との対立を余儀なくされています。

衆院の解散は言うまでもなく、国民の「信を問う」ことにある訳ですが、今回の結果がどうなるかは神のみぞ知るといったところでしょうか。

小池新党を予測していたのかは分かりませんが、安倍首相はある意味危険な賭けに出たのかもしれません。それが、

ということなのですが、この"iron grip"という表現を取り上げてみたいと思います。

これを何と訳したものかと思うのですが、コンテクストからすると、「高い支持率」というような意味合いでしょうか。

ここのところの安倍政権は決して支持率が高いとも思われませんが、森友学園問題やらによる支持率の下落を経て、北朝鮮情勢が緊迫している直近ではまた上昇傾向にあるということです。

この"iron grip"については辞書にもエントリがないので、コーパスを検索してみます。

下記の例では、影響力、という日本語がしっくりくるように思われます。

stir the pot

昨年のアメリカ大統領選に関連して、ここのところロシアが選挙に不当に介入したという疑惑が改めて高まっているようです。

記事を引用します。


The Russian government tried to influence the 2016 presidential election by masquerading as an authentic US Muslim organization on social media and posting incendiary memes about Hillary Clinton — while simultaneously using other accounts to send Islamophobic messages to right-wing users, a report says.

Sources tell The Daily Beast that the Kremlin-backed internet trolls created a fake Facebook group called “United Muslims of America” and then used it to stir the proverbial pot for months.

記事によれば、ロシア側はイスラム教団体を標榜するフェースブックアカウントを開設し、ヒラリー・クリントン候補の不利になるような工作活動を行ったということのようです。

記事中に、


stir the pot


という表現が使われています。

このフレーズを手元の辞書で調べてみたのですが、載っていません。

コンテクストから意味の想像はつくのですが、気になるのでネットで検索してみると、凡そ"agitate"と同じような意味合いで使われるフレーズをであることが分かりました。

つまり、"pot"というのはシチューなどを煮ている鍋のことで、それをかき混ぜることが"stir"です。

日本語で波風を立てる、などと言いますが、何もしなければ静穏で平和なものを、敢えて介入することで対立を煽ったり、事を荒立てる、というような意味になるでしょうか。

タイ国のインラック前首相に有罪判決、のニュースです。


BANGKOK — A Thai court on Wednesday sentenced former Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra, whose government was ousted in a 2014 military coup, in absentia to five years in prison for alleged negligence in a money-losing rice subsidy program.

Yingluck, who has said the charges are politically motivated, is believed to have fled the country last month before the original date of the verdict. Her lawyers said on Wednesday that they have no idea where she is.

タイ国史上初の女性首相としてもてはやされましたが、コメの買上げ制度を巡るスキャンダルで失職しました。

最高裁での裁判が進行中でしたが、懲役5年が確定したようです。

尤も、インラック氏は国外逃亡しているとされ、判決はいわゆる「欠席裁判」(in absentia)だったようです。

nook and cranny

健康な生活を送る上で欠かせない睡眠ですが、最近では睡眠の量(時間)のみならず、その質が重要と言われるのをよく耳にします。

下記に引用するのは、睡眠が不足することで様々な問題が引き起こされることを指摘したものです。


A “catastrophic sleep-loss epidemic” is causing a host of potentially fatal diseases, a leading expert has said.

In an interview with the Guardian, Professor Matthew Walker, director of the Centre for Human Sleep Science at the University of California, Berkeley, said that sleep deprivation affected “every aspect of our biology” and was widespread in modern society.

UCLAバークレー校のWalker教授は睡眠の不足がもたらす危機について、認識が不足していることに警鐘を鳴らしています。

睡眠不足がもたらず弊害は確実に人間の体に悪影響を及ぼすというのが同教授の持論のようです。


“It sinks down into every possible nook and cranny."


という、同教授のコメントですが、"nook and cranny"というのはよく知られているフレーズで、隅から隅まで、というような意味です。

"search every nook and cranny"というフレーズは高校受験英語レベルでの暗記必須フレーズでしょうか(!?)

"nook"も"cranny"もいずれも、「隅」ということになりそうですが、"nook"とは壁と壁が接するところ(つまり、部屋の角っこで、隅)、"cranny"は切れ目や裂け目を意味するラテン語に由来しているそうです。

ダイヤルアップ? - dial

週末も緊迫する北朝鮮を巡る情勢から目を離せませんでしたが、金氏とトランプ氏の応酬にいつ戦争が始まるのかとおっかない気分です。

さて、ロイター通信の記事から引用します。


SEOUL/UNITED NATIONS (Reuters) - U.S. President Donald Trump dialed up the rhetoric against North Korea again at the weekend, warning the country’s foreign minister that he and leader Kim Jong Un “won’t be around much longer”, as Pyongyang staged a major anti-U.S. rally.

North Korea’s Foreign Minister Ri Yong Ho told the United Nations General Assembly on Saturday that targeting the U.S. mainland with its rockets was inevitable after “Mr Evil President” Trump called Pyongyang’s leader a “rocket man” on a suicide mission.

トランプ米大統領が金氏を揶揄して、"little rocket man"と呼んだことに対して、北朝鮮の外務担当大臣は米本土へのミサイル発射をも示唆しました。

これに対して、トランプ氏は、

ということなのですが、ここで、"dial up"というフレーズが目に留まりました。

「ダイヤルアップ」というと多くの人が旧き良き(!?)90年代のインターネット接続方法を想起するのではないでしょうか。

"dial up rhetoric"というのは、一体どういう意味でしょう。

コンテクストから、トランプ氏が北朝鮮を批判するトーンを「改めて一段階上げた」、くらいの意味になるのだと思いますが、手持ちの辞書で"dial"の動詞の意味をチェックしましたが、このような用例の説明は見当たりませんでした。

興味深いことに、記事ではもう1箇所、"dial back"というフレーズが出てきます。


U.S. Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin on Sunday tried to dial back Trump’s comments.

“The president doesn’t want to be in a nuclear war and we will do everything we can to make sure that doesn’t occur,” he said on ABC News. “On the other hand, the president will protect the American people and our allies.”

トランプ、金、両氏の発言内容が過激すぎたということでしょうか、側近がトランプ氏のコメントを"dial back"した、ということなのですが、これはつまり、過激な発言を和らげようとして、トーンダウンさせた、という意味合いでしょう。

ここで、"dial"について改めて考えてみるのですが、"dial"とは何ぞやということですが、


a device that may be operated to make electrical connections or to regulate the operation of a machine ·
(Merriam-Webster Dictionary)


ということであり、ダイヤル操作とはそれによって機器の操作を行うことであり、ここではボリューム(音量)機構を想起すれば分かりやすいと思います。

このような"dial"の用法に馴染みがありませんでしたが、同じようなコンテクストで使用例は結構あるようです。

上記引用では、"dial up"と"dial down"が対比的に用いられていますが、ここでも北朝鮮問題に関して、言葉の応酬によって緊張を無闇に高めるのではなく、外交努力をすべきである、といった内容かと思われます。

pay dearly

核実験やミサイル発射で日米韓を挑発する北朝鮮と、軍事行動も辞さないと明言するトランプ米大統領の間で緊張が高まっています。

今週は国連総会が開催されており、総会の演説に立ったトランプ大統領は北朝鮮を破壊しなければならないとまで言及しました。

これを受けてもなお、北朝鮮は対決姿勢を崩さず、同国の外務担当大臣は太平洋上で水爆実験を強行するとまで発言しました。


(CNN) — North Korea's foreign minister warned Thursday that Pyongyang could test a powerful nuclear weapon over the Pacific Ocean in response to US President Donald Trump's threats of military action.

The country's Foreign Minister, Ri Yong Ho, told reporters in New York that the ultimate decision, however, was up to his boss, Kim Jong Un. Ri was due to address the United Nations General Assembly on Friday but has since dropped out.

引用したのは本日(9月22日)昼過ぎのCNNからの記事ですが、今朝の時点ではまだトランプ大統領の発言に対する北朝鮮当局による批判の声明が出ているに過ぎない状況でした。

その際の記事のタイトルで、


Trump would pay dealy for comments at UN


とあったのですが、上に引用した記事にもありますように、


pay dearly


という表現が使われており、邦紙では、


高い代償を払うことになる


と和訳されています。

英語で"dear"は、レターの冒頭に使われるフレーズとして覚えている人がほとんどではないでしょうか。その"dear"から派生している"dearly"も同じようなイメージを持っており、「高い代償を払う」というような意味合いになるというのは意外に思われるかもしれません。

元々、"dear"という単語はゲルマン語系に遡るようなのですが、貴重な、尊い、高価な、高い、といった意味がありました。「親愛なる~」という、我々が最も馴染みのある"dear"は、これらの元の意味から派生したものなのです。

親愛の表現と、まるで脅迫のような表現が同居する単語というのは興味深いものがありますね。

インスタ映え ― instagenic / photogenic

若い人たちの間で、「インスタ映え」という言葉があるそうです。

「インスタ映え」というのは、インスタグラム(Instagram)というソーシャルネットワーキングサービス(SNS)に投稿するのに都合の良い写真が取れる、という意味なのだそうです。

SNSユーザーが、写真を投稿する際になるべく人気があって、話題性があるような写真を撮影して投稿したいという、まぁある種の自己顕示欲ですが、それを満たしてくれるような風景や景色、といったものが、いわゆる「インスタ映え」すると呼ばれるものです。

この「インスタ映え」を表現するのにぴったりな英語表現は、


photogenic


です。

写真を意味するphoto-と、適する、という意味合いの接尾辞-genic(-gen)が結合したもので、写真写りが良い、という意味の形容詞です。

-genicという単語は数多くあり、例えばtelegenic(テレビ映りが良い)という単語もあります。

と、ここまで書いて、ではい「インスタ映え」は、


insta-genic


になるんじゃないか、と思ってネット検索してみたら、やはり"instagenic"なる造語が既に存在していました。

関心としては、"Instagram"と"photogenic"のかばん語としての"instagenic"が先に発生して、後に「インスタ映え」という日本語になったのか、あるいはその逆なのか、ということなのですが。

G-rated

現代の若者は草食化している、なんてよく言われます。

日本の男子に関しては、若者が車に乗らなくなった、とか、女子にあまり関心を持たなくなった(むしろ、女性の方が肉食化している!?)、などという指摘をよく聞きます。

同じような「草食化」はアメリカでも同様のようです。


When 17-year-old Quattro Musser hangs out with friends, they don't drink beer or cruise around in cars with their dates. Rather, they stick to G-rated activities such as rock-climbing or talking about books.

They are in good company, according to a new study showing that teenagers are increasingly delaying activities that had long been seen as rites of passage into adulthood. The study, published Tuesday in the journal Child Development, found that the percentage of adolescents in the U.S. who have a driver's license, who have tried alcohol, who date, and who work for pay has plummeted since 1976, with the most precipitous decreases in the past decade.

統計によるとティーンエイジャーの飲酒率や喫煙率、”初体験”率などがこの10年程で軒並み下がっているそうです。

とかく大人に背伸びしたがる世代は今時、"G-rated activities"にいそしんでいるというのが実態だそうです。

"G-rated"とは、


relating to or characterized by a lack of violence, obscenity, or sexual explicitness
(Merriam-Webster Dictionary)


ということで、元は映画の内容に応じてつけられるラベルでしたが、その内容が「一般向け」(general admission)であるということで、


innocent, clean
(ibid.)


という意味で用いられています。

Chinese whisper

ここのところ、仮想通貨ビットコインの話題でにわかに盛り上がっていますが、取引所が突然閉鎖されてしまった”事件”がまだ記憶に新しいわたくしなどはとても投資目的で手を出す勇気がありません。

The event and reactions somewhat mirror the ICO ban on September 4, with crypto markets in the red. The ICO mania is also mentioned, with a quote from Professor Deng Jianpeng, a professor at the Central University for Nationalities, stating that “up to 90 percent of ICO projects are currently suspected of fraud.”

ここ数ヶ月の間にもビットコインの価値は乱高下しているそうですが、その背景には中国にあるビットコイン取引所が閉鎖されるという噂があることによるようです。

さて、記事のタイトルを見ていただきたいのですが、

というのは、日本語でいう「伝言ゲーム」のことだとご存知でしたか?

昔、小学生の時分にバス旅行などでやった記憶があるのですが、ある話を聞いた最初の人が次の人へ伝え、それを順々に繰り返し、最初の人が聞いた話と最後の人に伝わった話との違いを比較するという遊びです。

記事では、ビットコイン急落の原因に中国での(取引所閉鎖に関する)報道があるとしていますが、

とあり、つまりは報道内容の真実性に問題があるということになっています。

昨年のアメリカ大統領選からフェイクニュースという言葉が日常のものとなりましたが、フェイクニュースに踊らされる我々は現代の「伝言ゲーム」に強制参加させられているといったところでしょうか。

tee off

昨年のアメリカ大統領選で共和党のトランプ氏に敗れた民主党のクリントン氏が回顧本を最近出版したことがきっかけとなったのでしょうか、両氏の間がまた険悪な状況になっているようです。

険悪といっても大統領選の討論会のような実際に相見える状況はないでしょうから、クリントン氏が回顧本でトランプ氏を本当に気持ち悪かったと書いたことに対して、トランプ氏がツイッターで批判する、といった程度のことでした。

ところが、トランプ氏が放ったゴルフショットがクリントン氏の背中を直撃し倒れこむ、という醜悪なビデオがネット上で公開されると、これをトランプ氏がツイッターでリツイートするという、例のプロレスのビデオを彷彿とさせる”事件”が起きました。


President Trump retweeted on Sunday an edited video of him whacking a golf ball that strikes Hillary Clinton in the back and knocks her down.

“Donald Trump’s amazing golf swing #CrookedHillary,” said the tweet posted Wednesday by Mike@fuctupmind.

Then, Clinton is seen tripping as she enters an airplane, and the video modified to show her being struck by a golf ball.

Democrats teed off on their own.

記事中に引用されているビデオを見てみましたが、編集されたものであることは明らかで、ゴルフ好きのトランプ氏がティーショットを放つ映像と、飛行機にのりこもうとしているクリントン氏がタラップで躓く映像がつなぎ合わされているものです。

当然ながら民主党員は批判をするのですが、


Democrats teed off on their own.


とあります。

ここでは、"tee off on something"という表現が使われているのですが、これはゴルフで使うティー(tee)に掛けて、相手を攻撃する、という意味の口語表現です。

同じくゴルフにちなむ表現として、"tee up"も参照下さい。

worrywart

お金持ちのステータスシンボルといえば何でしょうか?

高級車?豪邸?

いやいや、自分で運転しないでお抱え運転手を雇っている人の方が金持ちでしょう。

最近のニューヨークでは、私設のボディガードが、ほんの一握りの富裕層の間で流行っている(?)そうです。

確かに。

今の世の中、何が起きるか分かりませんから、いつ何時、事故や災害、テロに巻き込まれるかも分かりません。そこでボディガード、ということでしょうか。

記事中、マイケルさん(仮名)のコメントに、


I'm not a worrywart.


とありますが、この"worrywart"とは「心配性の人」という意味です。

この単語は面白いのですが、"worry"(心配する)と"wart"(イボ)が結合したもののように見えます。

辞書の語源欄にはそのような説明はないのですが、ネットを検索するとこの単語の”歴史”について色々な解説に行き当たりました。

ここにご紹介させていただくのはWord Detectiveというウェブサイトの解説です。

"wart"(イボ)から、肌に出来てしまったイボに悩む、もしくは肌にイボが出来てしまうほど思い悩むといった関連性を想起しがちですが、どうやらそうではないそうです。

興味深いのは、"worry"という動詞自体、現代では「心配する」という意味ですが、元々は「絞め殺す、噛む」(strangle)の意だったということです。こうした意味が次第に変容し、現在の「悩ます」といった意味になったのは19世紀だそうです。

一方の、"wart"はイボという意味の他、イボのように癪に障るもの、不快なもの(人)、という意味が生まれました。

つまり、"worrywart"とは元々、他人を悩ますような厄介な事(人)を指していたのであり、「自ら思い悩む人」という意味ではなかった、ということになります。

この単語は、James R. Williamsという作家が新聞に連載していた漫画の登場人物"Worry Wart"により日常の言葉として広まったそうですが、当の人物はやはり他人に苦労や厄介なことをもたらす困った男だったということです。

ソーセージ ー link

日本でもレストランチェーンを展開しているデニーズは元々アメリカ生まれですが、そのデニーズが最近発表した新しいマスコットがソーシャルメディアで話題を呼んでいるようです。

新しいマスコットはソーセージなんですが、見た目が!?イマイチ・・・、ということで良くも悪くもデニーズが話題になっているようです。

記事でも取り上げられているマスコットの写真を見ると大体想像がつきますが、"looks like something else"ということで、確かに食欲をそそるのか削ぐのか、意見が分かれるところかもしれません。

さて、気になったのが、


Sausage link


という表現です。単に、"sausage"ではなく、"sausage link"ということなのですが、リンクと聞けばネットの話ししか頭に思い浮かばないのはネット中毒かもしれません。

考えてみれば、"link"とは鎖のことですから、繋がっているソーセージを指して、"sausage link"というのも頷けます。

なぜ、敢えて、"link"というのかは、ソーセージには、我々に馴染みのある細長い形状のものとパティ状(patty)のものと2種類あるからなんですね。

今時、スーパーで売られているソーセージは1つ1つ(1本1本)がバラバラで袋入りになっているのが普通で、繋がっているものを目にすることはあまりないのではないでしょうか?

また、パティ状のものを「ソーセージ」と呼ぶことは、日本ではほとんどないと思われます。

我々が普段食べているソーセージ1本は、

アップル、iPhone Xを発表 - X

今日は、アップルがiPhone Xを発表したという記事が目に留まりました。

ネットのニュースなどでも、iPhone絡みの記事がやたらと多いですが、最近はiPhone 8だとか、ホームボタンがなくなるだとか、噂話の類が多く、斜め読みはしていたところ、ようやくアップル社からの正式発表ということで、記事を読んでみました。

朝刊の記事でまず気づいたのが、iPhone Xは「アイフォーン エックス」ではなく、「アイフォーン テン」と読むべき、ということでした。

記事にはiPhone X(テン)とあります。つまり、X=10(ten)のことであり、Xはローマ数字というわけです。

The 5.8-inch OLED screen isn't just larger, it also uses a different technology that Apple says will make colors absolutely pop. ローマ数字にあまり馴染みがない方もおられるかもしれませんが、普通は時計の文字盤で目にするくらいでしょうか?

ところで、Xがなぜ10(ten)になるのかご存知でしょうか?

その前に、Vが5(five)であるところから話は始まります。I、II、III・・・、というのは言われなくとも分かりますが、Vが5となる所以は手を広げて5本指を見せる際に、親指と人差し指が作るV字から来ています。

そして、XはこのVが2つ、つまり5掛ける2、という訳です。

iPhone X(アイフォーン・テン)は10万円以上するということでそ、その高額さも話題ですが、テン(ten)という命名はまさか値段の話しでしょうか!?

pawn shop

昨日に引き続きアメリカ南部を襲ったハリケーンIrmaに関するニュース記事からの引用です。


PLANTATION, Fla. — Police have arrested nearly a dozen people accused of looting hurricane-shuttered stores around Fort Lauderdale as brutal Hurricane Irma bore down on the beachside city 30 miles north of Miami.

Fort Lauderdale police said they arrested nine people Sunday on suspicion of looting a pawn shop and nearby shoe store. Two teens were arrested for breaking into six homes Saturday night as the storm intensified.

大災害による混乱をいいことに悪事を働く輩というのはどこにでもいるものです。

住民が避難して不在になっていることをいいことに、盗みを働いた輩が逮捕されました。

記事によると狙われたのは10代の若者2名を含む十数人だということですが、彼らがターゲットにしたのは一般住宅のほか、質屋や店舗だったということです。

質屋のことを、


pawn shop


と言います。

"pawn"というとチェスの駒を思い出しますが、その"pawn"とは別の単語です。

質、質草、担保、など日本語でも色々な表現がありますが、英語では"pawn"を始め、"pledge"、"security"などといった単語があります。

私は貧しい大学時代にも質屋を利用したことなどはありませんが、最近の若い人はどうなのでしょうか。

"pawn"の語源を辿ると古フランス語のpanに遡るらしいですが、これは布地、衣服を意味するラテン語pannusとも通じているそうで、かつては質草として布地が使われていたことに由来するという説もあるそうです。

stay put

先日のハリケーンHarveyの被害による悪夢もまだ覚めやらぬところを、またしても超大型のハリケーンIrmaがアメリカ南部を襲いました。


Longtime resident Ed Brown is staying put in nearly deserted Fort Myers Beach, Fla., despite an evacuation order and predictions of a storm surge of up to 12 feet.

Brown and his friend Tim Benevente were busy with storm preparations at the popular tourist destination Saturday, piling sandbags while hoping for the best.

If need be, Brown said he would climb aboard his nearby boat or climb into a cooler and float on the floodwaters.

この超大型のハリケーンへの対応としては、当然のことながら避難命令も出ているそうなのですが、事情あって自宅に留まることを選択する人もいるようです。

この「留まる」という表現に、


stay put


という英語が使われています。

"stay"だけでもよさそうなものですが、どうやら"stay put"という成句が存在するようです。

"stay"も"put"も動詞ですが、"stay calm"などのフレーズに当てはめてみるならば、ここでも"put"は過去分詞形と分析すべきでしょうか。

to remain in the same place or position


と定義されています。

日本人にも馴染みのあるトイザラスですが、今日のニュースのヘッドラインを斜め読みしていると、破産申請するのではないかとの憶測が飛び交っているようです。


Toys "R" Us bankruptcy filing reportedly could be in play

Toys "R" Us used to dominate the American toy market. These days there is talk it may file for bankruptcy protection as it struggles against larger rivals such as Amazon.com, Walmart and Target.

The retailer reportedly has hired the law firm Kirkland and Ellis as restructuring consultants to help it renegotiate $446 million in debt due before the end of its current fiscal year. Even if Toys "R" Us can address the debt that's coming due this fiscal year, it still will have to deal with another $2.2 billion in debt that's due in its following fiscal year. As of last April, Toys "R" Us had more than $5 billion in long-term debt.

トイザラスが手がける玩具のマーケットはアマゾンによる通信販売や他の競合との競争にさらされており、同社の負債が長期にわたって累積している模様です。

ところで、記事のタイトルで使われている、"be in play"という表現に注目したいと思います。

この"in play"とはどういう意味合いなのでしょうか?

私は最初、破産申請(bankruptcy filing)が近そうだ、と解釈して、"in play"は「あることがもうすぐ起きそうな」というくらいの意味なのかと勝手に解釈したのですが、辞書を見て間違いに気づいた次第です。

"in play"には、会社が他社に買収されかかっている、という意味のアメリカ英語表現(ランダムハウス英和辞書)だったのです。

American Heritage Dictionaryには下記のようにあります。


In a position, or rumored to be in a position of possible corporate takeover


ところで記事中では、トイザラスが買収される可能性について言及しているのは記事のほぼ終わりのあたりの一部分(以下)で、記事のタイトルで使われている"could be in play"が正しく解釈できないと、記事の主要な意図そのものを正しく理解できない可能性があります。

猫ブームです。ゴロゴロ・・・ ー purr

ハリケーンHarveyはアメリカ南部に甚大な被害をもたらしました。トランプ大統領が私財を寄付したのを始め、援助の輪が広がっていますが、ある女性がツイッターを利用して始めた募金活動が話題になっています。

女性が飼う猫の写真や動画を配信して募金を募ったというものです。

世に猫好きな人は多いとは思いますが、猫の写真や動画見たさにお金を出す人がそんなにいるとも思えません。しかしながら、現在までに募金総額2万ドル以上を記録したということで、よほど人気のある猫なのでしょうか。

上に引用した記事でしゃれが使われているのがお分かりでしょうか?2箇所です。

1つ目は、冒頭、


This cat has people feel-ine like opening their wallets.


とある文の、"feel-ine"です。

ネコ科を意味する"feline"にかけて、"feel like ~ing"というフレーズをもじっています。

2つ目ですが、


came up with the purr-fect idea to help people affected


とある文の、"purr-fect"です。

"perfect"を"purr-fect"ともじっているのですが、この"purr"は猫がゴロゴロと音を出す様を意味する動詞で、擬声語です。

人気の猫は可愛らしさで人気を集めているというよりも、風変わりなところが受けているみたいですが、記事の写真は至って普通のものしか載っていないので、やはり見たい人は募金するしかないのかも・・・。

Godspeed

昨日取り上げた、オバマ前大統領からトランプ現大統領へのレターですが(全文はCNNのサイトで読むことが出来ます)、実はもうひとつ目に留まった表現がありました。

レターの末尾、締めくくりの部分です。

わたしは仕事で海外の同僚や関係者にメールを送ることがありますが、その場合の締めくくりは大体、

などです。相手からの返信ではバリエーションが色々あって、Kind regards、だったり、あるいは人によってはBR、KR、と省略形だったりします。

オバマ大統領の、

は初めて見ました。ビジネスメールでは見たことがありません。

この"Godspeed"は「幸運、成功を祈る」という意味だということは、これをきっかけに知ることになりました。

ところで、どうしても"God"と"speed"が結合したように見えてしまい、"speed"が目に付いてしまうのですが、ここでの"speed"は「スピード」のことではありません。

辞書によると、中期英語での表現"God spede"が"Godspeed"になったもので、元の意味は「神(God)があなたを栄えさせますように」ということなのです。

「スピード」(速度)のことではありませんと上に書きましたが、"speed"という単語の古語の意味として「幸運、成功」があるということも分かりました。

つまり現代の"speed"は、栄えるという原義のspedeが意味変化して生まれたものなのでした。

茨の道 ー rough patch

オバマ前大統領がトランプ大統領に送ったとされるレターがニュースで話題になっています。

大統領就任時に、オバマ前大統領が直筆でしたためたもので、新しい大統領へのはなむけといったところでしょうか。



(CNN) — During his final moments in the Oval Office, President Barack Obama folded into thirds a handwritten letter to Donald Trump, slid it into an envelope, and in neat capital letters addressed it to "Mr. President."

Now, the contents of that letter -- the last direct communication between the 44th and 45th presidents -- have emerged for the first time after CNN obtained a copy.

レターのコピーをCNNが独占入手(?)したもののようですが、内容は大統領就任を祝福する言葉に始まり、ホワイトハウスの主となることについての心構えといった、3つの要点を中心に置いた簡潔なものです。

決して上から目線のアドバイスや助言といった感じのものではなく、オバマ氏の温厚さが滲み出ているような文章です。

ところで、3つの要点を終えて最後に(And finally,...)というところで、下記のようなくだりとなっています。


And finally, take time, in the rush of events and responsibilities, for friends and family. They'll get you through the inevitable rough patches.

取り上げたいのは、"rough patches"という表現です。

引用した部分の趣旨としては、激務の中でも家族や友人との時間を大切に、というところでしょうか。(家族や友人が)きっとトランプ氏の支えになるから、というものです。

最後の、


get through rough patches


は特に辞書を引くまでもなく、大変な(つらい、苦しい)経験や事態をくぐりぬける、といった意味合いだと想像がつきます。

その通り、"rought patch"とは困難や憂き目、といった状況を意味する表現なのでした。

そして、"go through rought patch"といった表現の他にも、類似の表現として、


strike a bad patch
hit a sticky patch


などといったいくつかのバリエーションがあるようです。

ところで、"patch"は継ぎはぎ(当て布)のことですが、"rought patch"が苦境を意味するようになった起源については色々調べてみたものの判然としません。

衣服に継ぎはぎをしなかればならないくらい貧しいことを指しているのでしょうか?

一説には、"patch"とは区画(部分)のことであり、例えば道路の水溜りや舗装の悪い部分のことが"rough patch"であるから、人生の道程を喩えたもの、という見方もあるようです。

では、"sticky patch"は?

ガムが落ちているような道端でしょうか!?踏んづけてしまったら不運には違いありませんが・・・。

日本語では困難な道程を指して「茨の道」と言いますが、それに相当する英語表現のように思えました。

tit-for-tat

"tit for tat"という表現をご存知でしょうか?

下記の引用を読んでみましょう。

"tit-for-tat"とハイフンで接続されていますが、意味は同じです。

辞書を引くと、


しっぺ返し、仕返し、売り言葉に買い言葉
(ランダムハウス英和辞書)


などと載っています。つまり、やられたらやり返す、の精神ですね。

この表現ですが、"tip for tap"が変化したものだそうですが、"tip"も"tap"も、軽く叩く、打つ、という意味です。

ちょっと小突いてきたから、小突き返す、というような感じでしょうか。満員電車でみかけそうな光景です(苦笑)

ANTIFAって何? ― antifa

唐突ですが、"antifa"って何のことかご存知でしょうか?


House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi condemned the “violent actions of people calling themselves antifa” after violence led to arrests at Bay Area protests, in the strongest criticism of left-wing protesters that any Democratic leader has made.

“Our democracy has no room for inciting violence or endangering the public, no matter the ideology of those who commit such acts,” Pelosi said in a statement released late Tuesday. “The violent actions of people calling themselves antifa in Berkeley this weekend deserve unequivocal condemnation, and the perpetrators should be arrested and prosecuted.”

アメリカではここのところ白人至上主義者とそれに反対する団体が衝突して死者も出るなど、穏やかでない事件が続いています。

"antifa"というのはその白人至上主義者に反対する人たちのことなのですが、これは反ファシズム主義と呼ばれています。

"antifa"に"anti-"という接頭辞を見出だしそうですが、その通りで、


anti-facism


のことです。

この単語は辞書には載っておらず、ごく最近発生した単語のように思っていましたが、そのルーツはナチス党が存在していた時代のドイツまで遡るそうです。
