BEIRUT — A wounded British photographer who had been trapped in the besieged Syrian city of Homs was spirited safely into Lebanon on Tuesday in a risky journey that killed 13 rebels who helped him escape the relentless shelling and gunfire.
(Wounded British journalist smuggled safely out of besieged Syrian city of Homs. The Washington Post. February 29, 2012.)

記事タイトルの、"smuggled safely out of..."

To carry off mysteriously or secretly

― love child

He’s the love child of the most-hated man of the 20th century — maybe.

New evidence supports a Frenchman’s belief that he was Adolf Hitler’s illegitimate son after his mother had an affair with the future architect of the Holocaust in 1917.

A story published in the French magazine Le Point cites official military documents indicating cash payments to the mother of Jean-Marie Loret during the German occupation of France in World War II.
(Larry Mcshane. New evidence Hitler had a love child. February 22, 2012.)

ムカつく ― stick in my craw

Filthy habit sticks in my craw

News that the NSW Government plans to ban smoking in outdoor areas, including bus stops, taxi ranks, playgrounds and public entries to buildings, took me back to a different time in community attitudes to tobacco use.
(Nick Hartgerink. Filthy habit sticks in my craw. Illawarra Mercury. February 27, 2012.)

American Heritage Dictionaryでは、

To cause abiding discontent and resentment in (one)

I feel sorry for the poor buggers of my generation who are still smoking, and wonder when some tobacco-related illness will prematurely end their lives.

I pity the poor nicotine addicts who huddle in sad little groups outside their workplaces, furtively dragging on their fags. I shake my head at the foolishness of the kids who still take up smoking to look "cool", and wonder how they can possibly afford it.

I applaud all the anti-smoking ads, especially the ones aimed at parents urging them to quit for their children's sake. And I support these latest moves to make it even harder for smokers to light up in public places.
(ibid.)

American Heritage Dictionary

French toast n. Sliced bread soaked in a batter of milk and egg and lightly fried.

Good bread, however, rarely disappoints. Countless great recipes make use of it, and every culinary culture has a cache of them, so the ageing loaf is never out of season. I can't get through summer without knocking up several panzanellas (a Tuscan bread-and-tomato salad) and one or two pappa al pomodoros (a rustic soup made with much the same ingredients), while at this time of year leftover half-loaves are often turned into something sweet, such as a custard-soaked bread-and-butter pudding. French toast is another favourite: aka pain perdu, or plain old eggy bread, this makes a weekly outing in my house in colder months. A slice or two, denuded of crust, soaked in beaten egg (for 20 minutes, ideally), fried in butter until browned, then sprinkled with sugar is a breakfast fit for un roi. I'd take it over a croissant any day.

swoon

NEW YORK (CNNMoney) -- Maybe HP wants to rethink that whole "we're not getting rid of the PC" decision?

As PC sales swooned, Hewlett-Packard said Wednesday that its profit fell by a dramatic 44% while sales sank 7% in its fiscal first quarter, ended Jan. 31.

Rival Dell suffered a similar fate over the past three months, posting earnings and an outlook on Tuesday that disappointed Wall Street investors.
(David Goldman. PC slump kills HP and Dell's bottom lines. CNN. February 22, 2012.)

Pressure to address the UK's binge drinking grows ever stronger, with a number of radical solutions being put forward to try to help people cut down.

David Cameron last week called binge drinking a "scandal" that costs the NHS £2.7bn a year. He pledged to introduce drunk tanks and booze buses, and there are plans for a minimum price for alcohol.
(Tom de Castella. 10 radical solutions to binge drinking. BBC News. February 21, 2012.)

"exactly how many years a person can expect to shed under the scalpel"

Most middle-aged people who get face-lifts and other cosmetic surgery do so because they want to look younger. But since youth is partly in the eye of the beholder, it’s difficult to measure whether a procedure successfully turns back the clock, and by how much.

In a new study, a team of plastic surgeons set out to pin down exactly how many years a person can expect to shed under the scalpel. The surgeons asked medical students to estimate the ages of patients in before-and-after pictures, and the results suggest that facial surgery reduces a person’s outward age by about six to eight years, depending on the extent of the procedure.

The study, which was published online Monday in the journal Archives of Facial Plastic Surgery, was designed to fill a gap in the information available to prospective patients, says lead author Dr. Nitin Chauhan, a plastic surgeon at the University of Toronto.
(Matt McMillen. How Much Younger Does a Face Lift Make You Look? Time. February 21, 2012.)

― with flying colors

A few years from now, when your doctor prescribes a prescription for you, you might not get a bottle of pills. Instead, your drugs might be delivered under your skin, from a small microchip. At least, that’s the promise of a new invention by MIT researchers Robert Langer and Michael Cima, who worked with MicroCHIPS, Inc. to develop a microchip capable of delivering prescription drugs to patients. The chip, which has been in development for over a decade, just completed its first human test, which it passed with flying colors.
(Alex Knap. Your Next Prescription Might Be For A Microchip. Forbes. February 19, 2012.)

Here’s how the chip works. It’s implanted underneath the skin of the patients (who, in the study, reported that they often forgot it was there.) The chip contains tiny reservoirs that the drugs are placed into. The reservoirs are sealed with a layer of platinum and titanium. When a current is applied to the seal, it melts, releasing the drugs into the patient’s bloodstream. The microchips are programmable, as well, so that the drug delivery can be automated.
(ibid.)

One-legged millionaire gets 60 days for 'assault-by-Rolex'

The one-legged Manhattan millionaire convicted of clocking a gorgeous, self-described "naked masseuse" in the head with his solid gold Rolex has been sent to jail for 60 days.

Thomas Hartmann -- a construction worker-turned-real estate magnate thanks to a big Long Island police brutality settlement -- teared up at the defense table as he was sentenced in the oddball misdemeanor fracas.
(Laura Italiano. One-legged millionaire gets 60 days for 'assault-by-Rolex'. New York Post. February 16, 2012.)

NEW YORK — Kellogg Company will buy Procter & Gamble's Pringles potato chip business for $2.7 billion as the cereal maker seeks to extend its global snacks reach, the companies said Wednesday.

The all-cash deal came after a plan to sell Pringles to Diamond Foods was scotched amid a Securities and Exchange Commission probe into another side of Diamond's business.

"Pringles has an extensive global footprint that catapults Kellogg to the number-two position in the worldwide savory snacks category, helping us achieve our objective of becoming a truly global cereal and snacks company," John Bryant, Kellogg president and chief executive, said in a statement.
(Kellogg to buy P&G's Pringles business. AFP. February 16, 2012.)

Since The Purpose Driven Life catapulted him to fame in 2002, Warren has been in an unenviable position: he is the conservative evangelical, who-through the force of his charisma and the clarity of his Gospel message-is palatable even to those on the left who, like Warren, are committed to doing good.
(Newsweek. 2009.)

The pioneer in this field was Canadian Mark Rowswell - better known as Da Shan, or Big Mountain - whose pitch-perfect Mandarin and comedic skill catapulted him to national celebrity in the late 1980s.
(Christian Science Monitor. 2007.)

An NYPD detective was shot in the arm during a wild gun battle in a Harlem subway station today — but he was amazingly able to return fire and kill the suspect, officials said.

Career criminal Michael McBride and Queens detective Kevin Herlihy fired as many as 19 shots during the 4:20 p.m. chaos — sending terrified straphangers running for cover in the crowded station at St. Nicholas Avenue and West 145th Street.

McBride, 52 — who was wanted for shooting his ex-girlfriend’s daughter in the head on Monday — died at the scene with a gunshot to the chest.
(NYPD detective shot in Harlem. New York Post. February 14, 2012.)

Today’s subway station shooting stunned straphangers.

“I heard the shots ... and when I turned around, I saw somebody dead. He was on the landing face-down in blood,’’ said witness Edwin Pagan, 47, who was exiting the subway station at the time.

One witness added that pandemonium broke out among subway riders amid the gunfire.

“Little kids were like, ‘They’re shooting! They’re shooting!’’ said the witness, who didn’t want his name used.

“I walked right up the top of the station and saw [McBride]. The guy was dead, and he was cuffed. After a few minutes, they started pumping his chest, but he was already dead.”
(ibid.)

Whitney Houston was underwater and apparently unconscious when she was pulled from a Beverly Hills hotel bathtub, and she had prescription drugs in her room, authorities said Monday.

Two days after her death, Houston's body was taken to a small, Los Angeles-area airport to be flown to New Jersey, where her family was making arrangements for a funeral at the end of the week.

An autopsy was done Sunday, and authorities said there were no indications of foul play and no obvious signs of trauma on Houston's body. It could be weeks, however, before the coroner's office completes toxicology tests to establish her cause of death.
(Anthony McCartney. Authorities: Houston Was Underwater in Tub. The Associated Press. February 14, 2012.)

The White House said President Barack Obama's thoughts and prayers were with Houston's family, especially her daughter. Press secretary Jay Carney paid tribute to the singer's "immense talent" and called it a tragedy to lose somebody so gifted at such a young age.
(ibid.)

thoughts and prayers were with Houston's family, especially her daghter

A group of 73 plane passengers who landed at New Zealand's Auckland Airport suffering flu-like symptoms have now been allowed to leave the airport.

The infected passengers were Japanese schoolchildren, part of a group of 90 students who arrived from Tokyo and were headed on a home-stay trip.

Health authorities were alerted shortly after the Boeing 777-200 landed around 9.20am local time (7.20am AEDT) with the children complaining for flu-like symptoms.

Five ambulances rushed to the scene with medical crews wearing protective gear as they boarded the flight to examine the sick passengers.
(Sick plane passengers released from quarantine. Ninemsn. February 13, 2012.)

Health Minister Tony Ryall said the quarantine response was precautionary and those on board the plane were believed to have ordinary seasonal influenza.

"We've been briefed on the situation, and advised that it is Japan's flu season, and there are no reports of new strains of flu there," he told the New Zealand Herald.
(ibid.)

"quarantine response"

― white lie

White Coats, White Lies: How Honest Is Your Doctor?

Is your doctor telling you the truth? Possibly not, according to a new survey in Health Affairs of nearly 1,900 physicians around the country.

The researchers found that 55% of doctors said that in the last year they had been more positive about a patient’s prognosis than his medical history warranted. And 10% said they had told patients something that wasn’t true.

About a third of the MDs said they did not completely agree that they should disclose medical errors to patients, and 40% said they didn’t feel the need to disclose financial ties to drug or device companies.
(Alice Park. White Coats, White Lies: How Honest Is Your Doctor? Time. February 9, 2012)

Health Affairs

A trivial, harmless, or well-intentioned untrut

Why the white lies? In some cases, Iezzoni says it was for self-protection. Nearly 20% of the doctors admitted that they didn’t disclose a medical error to their patients because they were afraid of being sued for malpractice.

In other cases, it may have been for the patient’s benefit. MDs might spare an anxious patient from hearing about the slightly abnormal results of a lab test, for example, if it has no impact on the patient’s health. Conversely, the doctor might exaggerate a health result in hopes of motivating a patient to take better care of himself.
(ibid.)

AN injured sperm whale has drifted ashore on the Belgian coast and died before it could be rescued.

The whale was probably making a seasonal migration and ended up in the North Sea by accident. It measured 13 metres and weighed 27 tonnes.
(Sperm whale dies on Belgian beach. News.com.au. February 8, 2012.)

Any of several large, toothed whales of the family Physeteridae, especially Physeter catadon or P. macrocephalus, of tropical and temperate oceans, whose massive head has a cavity containing sperm oil and spermaceti and whose long intestines often contain ambergris. Also called cachalot.

この中で、"whose massive head has a cavity containing sperm oil and spermaceti"というところがヒントになります。

― spank

Want your kid to stop whatever dangerous/annoying/forbidden behavior he’s doing right now? Spanking will probably work — for now.

But be prepared for that same child to be more aggressive toward you and his siblings, his friends and his eventual spouse. Oh, and get ready for some other antisocial behaviors too.

A new analysis of two decades of research on the long-term effects of physical punishment in children concludes that spanking doesn’t work and can actually wreak havoc on kids’ long-term development, according to an article published Monday in the Canadian Medical Association Journal.
(Bonnie Rochman. Why Spanking Doesn’t Work. Time. February 6, 2012.)

Ever had to call an exterminator because a couple annoying pests invaded your house?

What if, instead of a few varmints, there were millions of them?

That scenario is unfolding in Puerto Rico, where the government has embarked on a sweeping campaign to eradicate the roughly 4 million iguanas populating the island and bring their meat stateside, the AP reports.
(Puerto Rico Plans To Slaughter Millions Of Iguanas And Sell Their Meat In The US. Business Insider. February 6, 2012.)

Lots of people love their cellphones. Facebook, so far, is not a big fan.

Amid the jaw-dropping financial figures the company revealed last week when it filed for a public offering was an interesting admission. Although more than half of its 845 million members log into Facebook on a mobile device, the company has not yet found a way to make real money from that use.

“We do not currently directly generate any meaningful revenue from the use of Facebook mobile products, and our ability to do so successfully is unproven,” the company said in its review of the risks it faces.
(Jenna Wortham. Facebook’s Mobility Challenge. The New York Times. February 5, 2012.)

Demi Moore is lucky to have attentive daughters — especially Rumer Willis — and several longtime friends who are really there for her as the actress struggles to face alleged drug problems and an eating disorder.

Yet, it’s clear Moore has a long way to go if she’s truly going to get well.

Two sources, long close to Moore, say the key problems for the actress, once the highest paid in Hollywood, are her dual obsessions with remaining young and being ultra-thin.

“She’s more obsessed with it than anyone I’ve ever seen, and this is Hollywood! Where everyone is nuts about dieting and staying young,” said a veteran agent and Moore pal. Apparently, Ashton Kutcher’s estranged wife’s recent daily diet has been “Red Bull for breakfast. Red Bull for lunch. Red Bull for dinner, with a lettuce leaf and a tablespoon — yes a tablespoon! — of tuna fish thrown in. … That’s it.”
(Bill Zwecker. Demi Moore’s daily diet: Red Bull, lettuce, a tablespoon of tuna. Chicago Sun Times. February 2, 2012.)

ticker symbol

Bitter rivals Duncan Niederauer’s New York Stock Exchange and Robert Greifeld’s Nasdaq are locked in a heated battle for Facebook’s listing when the privately held social-networking giant attempts to raise an eye-popping $10 billion in stock in the coming weeks, The Post has learned.

“It’s a very heated battle,” Larry Tabb, founder of capital markets advisory firm Tabb Group, confirmed, saying the race so far may be too close to call.
(NYSE, Nasdaq battle for Facebook listing. New York Post. January 28, 2012.)

Sources familiar with the rival exchanges say Facebook has not yet chosen a platform but already has reserved the ticker symbol “FB” and can use it on either exchange.
(ibid.)

(Source: Wikipedia

‘Bomb’ botch at LaGuardia
TSA’s 6-hr. delay

Clueless TSA agents found two possible pipe bombs in a passenger’s luggage yesterday at La Guardia Airport — and kept them in a public area for six hours without notifying cops, The Post has learned.

The Transportation Security Administration bozos at one point left the pipes — which eventually turned out to be harmless — resting on a radiator as hundreds of fliers passed through security nearby, sources said.

“Six hours to report a potential bomb? It’s outrageous,” one Port Authority police official fumed.

The stunning security screw-up, a violation of TSA policy of alerting police to all suspicious activity, began at about 11:30 a.m. at the central terminal when the male flier’s bags passed through an X-ray machine, the sources said.
(New York Post. January 31, 2012.)
