US troop death tally of 63 makes for deadliest month in Afghanistan

Poppy-farming area of Marjah at hub of British and Afghan army move against Taliban

Three US troops died in blasts in Afghanistan, bringing the military death toll for July to at least 63 and surpassing the previous month's record as the deadliest for American forces in the nearly nine-year-old war.

― greenwash

These days every piece of paper from both green-minded or green-washing companies seems to have that cumbersomely long yet necessary tag line, "printed on 100% post-consumer recycled fiber with vegetable-based inks"--or some version thereof. I predict that this tag line is going to get even longer--especially for cash register receipts.

I believe that "BPA-free" will soon be included in there somewhere. Why? Many of those receipts are covered in BPA, aka bisphenol-A, an endocrine disruptor linked to cancer, reproductive problems and lots of other ills.
(Siel Ju. BPA Concern At Wal-Mart, Whole Foods And Others. Forbes. July 29, 2010.)

Microsoft Corp., in a bold attempt to increase staff awareness and internal use of its own products, has announced plans to gift a Windows Phone 7 device to every one of its 90,000 employees around the world.

In terms of motivating factors behind such a generous gesture, Microsoft’s official line appears to be that it’s a direct acknowledgement of all the hard work put in by its global workforce.

However, we here at The Tech Herald would hazard a guess that Microsoft is attempting to preserve its image by eradicating the internal use of rival operating platforms – particularly the Apple iPhone, which is known to be a favourite amongst employees on the Redmond campus.
(Steven Mostyn. Microsoft to gift every employee with Windows Phone 7 device. The Tech Herald. July 22, 2010.)

Researchers have found that individuals with ‘more' education are better equipped to stave off dementia.

These findings published in the Advanced Access online edition of the journal Brain on July 26 confirm a decade of past studies that have also concluded more schooling equals a decreased risk of suffering from dementia, defined as the "loss of intellectual functions" including memory, orientation, calculation, language, attention and thinking.
(Stay in school longer to avoid dementia. The Independent. July 26, 2010.)

brush ... under the rug

Apple launched the iPhone 4 Case Program app in the App Store a few days ago, and is expected to invest somewhere in the neighborhood of $175 million on the free bumper program aimed at reluctantly addressing reception issues with the iPhone 4. There is something that doesn't add up, though, about the timing that makes the program seem like a bait-and-switch designed to brush the problem under the rug.
(Tony Bradley. Apple iPhone 4 Bumper Giveaway Timeline Doesn't Add Up. PC World. July 25, 2010.)

It's awesome that Apple is granting full refunds, but you might not get a bumper in time to determine if it's an effective solution or not before the 30 day deadline expires. And, by the way, just because Apple is willing to give you a full refund doesn't mean that AT&T is willing to surrender your contractual obligation.
(ibid.)

REGULARLY using a mobile phone could increase the risk of tinnitus, experts say.

The condition causes a noise in the ear such as a ringing, roaring or hissing sound.

Around 10 per cent to 15 per cent of adults have chronic tinnitus and it affects quality of life - such as preventing sleeping - in up to 3 per cent of people.

Now experts from Austria believe there is a link between tinnitus and mobile phone use after studying 100 people with the condition.

利益相反 ― conflict of interest

Professors at Harvard Medical School will no longer be able to take industry money to speak for drug or medical device companies or accept gifts, travel or meals under a new conflict-of-interest policy announced Wednesday.

The medical school also took steps to separate, but not ban, industry financing and industry exhibits from Harvard’s postgraduate education classes.

And it reduced by half, to $10,000, the limit on how much a faculty member can be paid by a company whose product or invention is under study by the faculty member; the current limit is $20,000. Harvard is one of the few universities to impose such a cap.

The policy changes were recommended in March by a 34-member review panel and accepted this week by Dr. Jeffrey S. Flier, dean of the medical school. In a statement, Dr. Flier said the changes would be formally incorporated into school policies over the next year.

― vuvuzela

Premier League clubs ban vuvuzela

At least six leading clubs in the English Premier League have banned the vuvuzela from their grounds in the coming football season.

Tottenham Hotspur, Arsenal, Birmingham, Everton, Fulham and West Ham have all said that the plastic horns, which became notorious for their loud droning sound during the World Cup in South Africa, will not be allowed inside their stadiums.

Tottenham said on its official website: "We are concerned that the presence of the instruments within the stadium pose unnecessary risks and could impact on the ability of all supporters to hear any emergency safety announcements."
(The National. July 21, 2010.)

Right-wing activists and conservative lawmakers have repeatedly rallied in Tokyo against any moves to grant foreign residents suffrage, saying only those who have obtained nationality should be allowed to vote.
(Mari Yamaguchi. Japan split over maiden names and foreign suffrage. The Associated Press. July 8, 2010.)

Microsoft has confirmed the presence of a zero-day vulnerability in Windows, following reports of sophisticated malware-based hacking attacks on industrial control systems that take advantage of the security flaw.

Security shortcomings in the Windows shortcut (.lnk files) are being exploited by the Stuxnet rootlet, an information stealing threat that targets industrial and power plant control systems. The malware - which has been detected in the wild - executes automatically if an infected USB stick is accessed in Windows Explorer.

The attack features rootkit components designed to hide the presence of the information-stealing payload on compromised systems. The digital certificate, assigned to legitimate firm Realtek Semiconductor, used to sign the rootkit components in the malware was revoked by VeriSign last week following discovery of the attack.
(The Register. July 19, 2010.)

TOKYO, July 16 (Reuters) - Japan's main opposition Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) will not discuss policy matters such as tax and pension reform with the ruling Democrats unless they drop their "pork-barrel" plans, LDP executives said on Friday.

Prime Minister Naoto Kan's Democratic Party of Japan (DPJ) and a small ally lost their upper house majority in an election last Sunday, threatening policies to curb public debt nearly twice the size of the $5 trillion economy and to engineer growth.

The DPJ will stay in power by virtue of its grip on parliament's more powerful lower house, but needs a majority in the upper chamber to enact legislation.

"Of course, there can and should be discussions on healthcare, pensions and care of the elderly," LDP policy chief Shigeru Ishiba told Reuters in an interview. "(But) unless the Democrats give up such pork-barrel policies as child allowances, free high schools, farmer payouts and that kind of pork-barrel spending, they can't draft the budget anyway," he said.
(Ruling party must drop pork-barrel plans. Reuters. July 16, 2010.)

TOKYO — Proposing a tax hike is normally a sure way to lose an election.
Yet Japanese Prime Minister Naoto Kan insists that's just what the country needs to do to rein in its bulging national debt.

In office just a month after his predecessor abruptly resigned, Kan has put repairing the country's strained finances at the center of the campaign for this Sunday's parliamentary elections.

The polls, in which half the seats in the 242-member upper house are up for grabs, is viewed as a referendum on the Democratic Party's 10 months in power since defeating the long-ruling conservative Liberal Democratic Party. The Democrats have promised to cut wasteful spending and bring greater transparency to politics, but have had a mixed record in achieving that so far.

TOKYO — Most Japanese voters want Prime Minister Naoto Kan to stay on in his job, despite plummeting approval ratings after his party's election defeat at the weekend, opinion polls showed Wednesday.

Newspaper surveys also found that nearly two thirds of respondents favour a debate about raising the sales tax to restore battered public finances, which have seen public debt soar to nearly twice the size of the economy.

Japan PM rules out snap poll after election setback

Mr Kan, who has been in office for only a month, urged the Japanese public to give his administration a chance.

His party won just 44 seats - well short of its goal of 54.

The poll - which leaves the ruling Democratic Party of Japan without a majority in the upper house - was seen as a referendum on its 10-month rule.

A total of 121 seats, half of the upper house, were being contested in the polls.

The DPJ held 62 seats not being contested, and its 44 wins leave it short of the 122 majority needed.

Its tiny ally, the People's New Party, won no seats in Sunday's election.

The DPJ still has a majority in the more powerful lower house which it can use to force legislation through parliament, but its ability to govern effectively has been challenged.

Mr Kan has said he will not resign and late on Monday ruled out calling an early poll.
(BBC News. July 12, 2010.)

Japan's Twisted Leadership

It's often an ideal outcome for investors: A government unable to effect any change is a government that will produce no surprises. Not so in Japan, where a massive debt burden, stagnant economy and entrenched deflation make policy inaction more frightening.

Soundly defeated in Sunday's elections, Japan's ruling coalition now finds itself facing an impotent future. The ruling bloc led by the Democratic Party of Japan lost its majority in the Upper House. It won't get a chance ...
(The Wall Street Journal. July 12, 2010.)

In the last upper house election in 2007, the then ruling coalition of the LDP and the New Komeito party lost control of the chamber and faced policy deadlock amid a divided Diet. Prime Minister Shinzo Abe stepped down two months after the election, citing bad health.

The division, or "twist" as the Japanese call it, could trigger a political realignment in which the DPJ finds it necessary to reconfigure the ruling coalition. But analysts say such a possibility remains remote as the DPJ has pretty much dispelled the negative image of its former leaders.

― prescient

BERLIN — Eyes around the world were on Germany's octopus oracle Paul on Friday as he made his biggest prediction yet in the World Cup: Spain will beat the Netherlands in the final.

Paul's prescient picks in the World Cup — he has yet to predict a match wrong — have propelled him to international fame from obscurity in an aquarium in the western city of Oberhausen.
TV stations in Germany, Great Britain, Taiwan and elsewhere broadcast live pictures, complete with breathless commentary, of his final decision.

Millions watched as the eight-legged oracle descended upon on a tank marked with a Spanish flag, sitting for only a few minutes before grabbing a mussel and devouring it, while completely ignoring the Dutch tank — indicating a Spanish victory in Sunday's final match in Sunday's final.
(Kirsten Grieshaber. Octopus oracle picks Spain to win World Cup. The Associated Press. July 9, 2010.)

Facebook faces a fine from a German privacy regulator for failing to obtain the consent of the people whose contact details it stores.

At issue are the site's invitation and address-book synchronization functions, through which it uploads and stores contact information from the e-mail and mobile phone address books of its users.

The problem, according to the Hamburg Commissioner for Data Protection and Freedom of Information, is that some of that personal information relates to people who are not Facebook users, and who have not given their permission for the site to store their personal information, nor use it for marketing purposes.

Facebook has until Aug. 11 to make its case to the data protection commissioner if it wishes to avoid a fine.

Hamburg takes a hard line on data protection: It is keeping a close eye on Google's collection of data for its Street View service, which adds panoramic views of streets to the company's mapping service. Germans have a right to oppose any publication of their own image, or that of their house, the regulator says, while Google's view is that it is fine to publish such images, as long as it gives people the option to have them removed later.

In a new development in the high-stakes battle over "Big Data," EMC on Tuesday announced plans to acquire Greenplum, a San Mateo startup that specializes in high-performance analytics software.

EMC, a Massachusetts-based data storage leader whose previous Silicon Valley acquisitions included Data Domain and VMware, did not disclose the size of the all-cash transaction. When the deal is finalized, Greenplum would be the fifth California-based company EMC has acquired in the past two years.

For EMC, technology from Greenplum, which bills itself as "the faster, smarter database," will represent the foundation of a new product division within its information infrastructure business, which will be led by Bill Cook, currently Greenplum's CEO. "The data warehousing world is about to change," EMC President Pat Gelsinger declared in a news release.

Japan's state broadcaster says it will not show the next sumo tournament live because of a gambling scandal that has engulfed the sport.

It is the first time NHK has not shown a tournament live in over 50 years.

New York (CNN) -- He didn't compete for the hot dog eating title this year, but he did cause a scene at the contest.

Takeru Kobayashi was arrested at Coney Island after his rival, Joey Chestnut, won the annual Nathan's International Hot Dog Eating Contest.

The six-time champion of the contest was trying to make his way on stage after this year's event, according to a representative for Kobayashi and a New York police officer at the Brooklyn precinct booking desk.

Apple has published a letter regarding the iPhone 4 antenna, explaining that a faulty formula is making signal strength display incorrectly. The company claims a software update coming in a few weeks will correct the formula.

Many customers are complaining that the iPhone 4’s antenna loses the signal when you hold it a certain way. They’re not delusional: Independent tests lend credence to the issue.
(Brian X. Chen. Tests Confirm iPhone 4’s Antenna Flaws (Updated). Wired.com. July 2, 2010.)

iPhone owners armed with pitchforks and torches are ready to storm the Apple castle over the problems some have experienced, and many have repeated, with making calls, keeping calls alive and holding a data connection.

Reports of call and data signal-strength problems in the new iPhone 4 surfaced within hours of the smartphone's launch last week. By the next day, Apple was acknowledging that holding the iPhone 4 can diminish the signal but offered only generic advice, telling users to "avoid gripping it in the lower left corner" or "use one of the many available cases."
(Gregg Keizer. How to solve the iPhone 4 antenna problem. Computerworld.com. July 2, 2010.)

SAN FRANCISCO — That didn’t take long.

Just 48 days after Microsoft began selling the Kin, a smartphone for the younger set, the company discontinued it because of disappointing sales.

The swift turnabout for the Kin, which Microsoft took two years to develop and whose release was backed with a hefty ad budget, is the latest sign of disarray for Microsoft’s recently reorganized consumer product unit.

“It’s an absolute failure,” said Charles S. Golvin, an analyst with Forrester Research. Mr. Golvin said he was surprised to see Microsoft kill a product so quickly, given the company’s history of sticking with new products and improving them over time.
(Miguel Helft. Microsoft Kin Discontinued After 48 Days. The New York Times. June 30, 2010.)
