― detail

Secret Service Detail Leaves Gun Unattended on Romney’s Charter Flight

TAMPA — A member of Mitt Romney’s Secret Service detail was removed today from a campaign trip after she accidentally left her firearm unattended in the candidate’s charter plane bathroom.

The agent in question left a gun unattended in the bathroom of the plane during a flight between Tampa and Indiana. The gun was found by a reporter on board who immediately informed the agent, who then went back into the bathroom and retrieved the weapon.
(Emily Friedman. Secret Service Detail Leaves Gun Unattended on Romney’s Charter Flight. ABC News. August 29, 2012.)

(Romney's) Secret Service detail

American Heritage Dictionary

The selection of one or more troops for a particular duty, usually a fatigue duty.
The personnel so selected.
The duty assigned: garbage detail.

"usually a fatigue duty"とあり、"garbage detail"(ゴミ当番?)

Jose Pena, a Cartagena taxi driver, told The Associated Press that he picked up the woman after the dispute. She said she left the hotel, where other members of the security detail and the White House press corps were staying, after she was paid $225.
(Associated Press. 2012.)

the kitchen detail 炊事班

Only 25 days into a life sentence for murder, 14-year-old Michael Lewis got into trouble at Lee Arrendale State Prison in Alto, in northeast Georgia. Lewis, known on the streets as "Little B," refused to work on a cleaning detail and cursed a corrections officer.
(Atlanta Journal Constitution. 2003.)

― bogart

Ladies, don't bogart that chocolate! Pass it on to the men.

A new study finds that compared with men who reported eating little-to-no chocolate on a regular basis, those who had the highest weekly consumption of chocolate — about 63 grams per week, or just a little more than 2 ounces — reduced their likelihood of suffering a stroke by 17%.
(Melissa Healey. For men too, chocolate consumption reduces stroke risk. Los Angeles Times. August 29, 2012.)

"up"の役割 ― fess up

American drivers constantly do things in their cars that they probably shouldn't — like eating, speeding or looking for contacts in their mobile phone.

But if you ask them if they are safe drivers, they all say "yes." Or very nearly all of them do, according to a new survey conducted for Ford Motor Co. by Penn Schoen Berland.

Indeed, 99% of the 2,506 licensed drivers surveyed in May described themselves as safe drivers. Yet in this same group, 76% fessed up to eating while driving; 55% admitted they exceed speed limits; and 54% talk on a hand-held mobile phone while at the wheel. More than third—37%—said they drive when they are too tired and a quarter 25% admitted to searching for contacts on their phone while driving.
(Mike Ramsey. Drivers Say They're Not the Problem. The Wall Street Journal. August 28, 2012.)

American Heritage Dictionaryによりますと、"often used with up"とあり、"up"と共に用いられることが多い単語です。

Changing Our Tune on Exercise

What would it take to persuade you to exercise?

A desire to lose weight or improve your figure? To keep heart disease, cancer or diabetes at bay? To lower your blood pressure or cholesterol? To protect your bones? To live to a healthy old age?

You'd think any of those reasons would be sufficient to get Americans exercising, but scores of studies have shown otherwise. It seems that public health experts, doctors and exercise devotees in the media -- like me -- have been using ineffective tactics to entice sedentary people to become, and remain, physically active.

For decades, people have been bombarded with messages that regular exercise is necessary to lose weight, prevent serious disease and foster healthy aging. And yes, most people say they value these goals. Yet a vast majority of Americans -- two-thirds of whom are overweight or obese -- have thus far failed to swallow the "exercise pill."

Now research by psychologists strongly suggests it's time to stop thinking of future health, weight loss and body image as motivators for exercise. Instead, these experts recommend a strategy marketers use to sell products: portray physical activity as a way to enhance current well-being and happiness.

"We need to make exercise relevant to people's daily lives," Michelle L. Segar, a research investigator at the Institute for Research on Women and Gender at the University of Michigan, said in an interview. "Everyone's schedule is packed with nonstop to-do's. We can only fit in what's essential."
(Jane E. Brody. Changing Our Tune on Exercise. The New York Times. August 27, 2012.)

Changing our tune on exercise

Moonwalker's 'a' got lost in transmission
(Detroit Free Press. August 26, 2012.)

Was the walk on the moon one small step for man, or a man?

Neil Armstrong's first words from the moon were heard all over Earth, and Earth heard this: "That's one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind."

But Armstrong said immediately after the 1969 landing that he had been misquoted. He said he actually said, "That's one small step for a man." It's just that people didn't hear it.
(ibid.)

"That's one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind."

"That's one small step for [a] man, one giant leap for mankind."

Some historians and critics have dogged Armstrong for not saying the more dramatic and grammatically correct, "One small step for a man ..." in the version he transmitted to NASA's Mission Control. Without the missing "a," Armstrong essentially said, "One small step for mankind, one giant leap for mankind."
(Software finds missing 'a' in Armstrong's moon quote. CNN. October 1, 2006.)

不定冠詞の"a"がないと、"one small step for man"は、"one small step for mankind"と同義となり、後続の"one giant leap for mankind"との対比にならなくなってしまうということなのです。

When Apple Inc. and Samsung Electronics Co. face off in a high-stakes patent trial Monday, there will be another elephant in the room: Google Inc.

Though the litigants are the two largest makers of smartphones, the closely watched case is also a proxy for a wider war between the two Silicon Valley companies vying to control their inner workings—Apple and Google.

Apple, which transformed the market with the 2007 debut of the iPhone, has launched a global attack on Samsung and other handset makers that use Google's Android software. The trial kicking off Monday in federal court in San Jose, Calif., could help bolster or refute Apple's contention that Google's operating system illegally copies software features of its own devices.
(Jessica E. Vasellaro. Samsung Case Is a Proxy for Google. The Wall Street Journal. July 30, 2012.)

従って、"a proxy for a wider war between..."

Apple’s suit against Samsung, the world’s largest maker of smartphones, has partly been viewed as a proxy war against Google, which Apple executives have derided as a copycat, swiping Apple’s innovations. Steven P. Jobs, the late chief executive of Apple, told his biographer that Android was a “stolen product.”

― second-guess

Mayor Michael Bloomberg on Monday said he wouldn't "second guess" the actions of police officers who shot and killed a knife-wielding man on Saturday during a daylight episode that was witnessed by dozens of bystanders near Times Square, some of whom took video that went viral on the Internet.
"I'm not an expert to go second-guess everything that…happened," Mr. Bloomberg said of the officers who killed Darrius Kennedy, 51 years old, adding that under the circumstances, the police appeared to not "have much choice."

The mayor's comments came in response to questions raised about the shooting and whether police could have disarmed Mr. Kennedy. The use of lethal force in the case has been scrutinized because of the time of day and location of the shooting, as well as the widely viewed Internet video.
(Tamer El-Ghobasy. Lethal Force Is Defended in Shooting. The Wall Street Journal. August 13, 2012.)

he (=Mayor Michael Bloomberg) wouldn’t “second guess” the actions of police officer who shot and killed a knife-wielding man

― make a splash

Logitech Washable Keyboard Makes a Splash
(PC World. August 22, 2012.)

Slips, slops, and spills are no match for Logitech's latest keyboard, the scrubbable, submergable, spill-proof, K310 Keyboard. This white-keyed washable keyboard is designed to withstand the rigors of life, from grimy fingers to splashes of soda.

Designed to stand up to the stresses that lay lesser keyboards low, the Logitech Washable Keyboard K310 can be submerged in up to 11 inches of water, washed with soap and water, and otherwise soaked and splashed. Though it is hand washable, you'll want to keep it out of the dishwasher, because while the keyboard can be safely submerged, the USB cable isn't waterproofed. The back of the keyboard has holes for draining off liquid and convenient air drying.
(Brian Westover. Logitech Washable Keyboard Makes a Splash. PC World. August 22, 2012.)

The keyboard that loves a wash.

A NSW McDonald's and a Sumo Salad fast-food outlet are among the latest additions to the state government's "name and shame" register for breaching hygiene rules.

Domino's Pizza in Cambridge Park, Penrith, Pizza Hut in Orange, the McDonald's in Yass and Sumo Salad in Macquarie Park made the list due to a lack of hygienic cleanliness standards.

Coles Express in Willoughby was also placed on the list for selling out-of-date products.

"This sends a clear message that businesses, regardless of how big or small, will not escape being publicly named if they fail to comply with food safety regulations," Primary Industries Minister Katrina Hodgkinson said.
(Fast-food chains added to hygiene 'name and shame' list. The Sydney Morning Herald. August 21, 2012.)

to publicly say that a person, group or business has done something wrong

Todd Akin, the Missouri Republican candidate for Senate, told a TV interviewer on Sunday that, “First of all, from what I understand from doctors, [pregnancy from rape] is really rare. If it’s a legitimate rape, the female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down.”
(Alexandra Petri. ‘Legitimate rape’ and Todd Akin’s myths. The Washington Post. August 20, 2012.)

“If it’s a legitimate rape” — what a phrase that is! It goes miles beyond oxymoron into a netherworld of terms that should not exist. It is the embodiment of the strange idea that it is only rape if there are horsemen seizing people by the hair, when of course this is not what rape looks like, by a long shot.
(ibid.)

SEVEN people, most of them elderly women, have died after eating pickles contaminated with E. coli in northern Japan, in the country's deadliest mass food poisoning in 10 years.

A total of 103 others have been made ill after eating the same lightly pickled Chinese cabbage produced in late July by a company in the city of Sapporo, according to health bulletins issued by the local government.

Of the dead, six were elderly women who ate the pickles at nursing homes in Sapporo and in another city on Hokkaido island. A four-year-old girl died on August 11 in Sapporo.
(Seven dead from contaminated pickles in Japan. Herald Sun. August 19, 2012.)

(5)=hair ― to a hair

measure the ingredients to a hair

Most AFL players make just $400 per game plus $50 bonus for wins, but starting quarterbacks average about $1,600. Raudabaugh’s salary is $1,675 per game, and that computes to a hair over $30,000 for six months’ work. And when the season ends, he’ll head back to suburban Dallas to work in the moving plant.
(Soul QB goes from moving-company worker to AFL star. Courier Post. July 27, 2012.)

In December 1991, Citi's stock sank to an abysmal $8.50 per share, at which price this largest U.S. banking establishment was worth only about $4.2 billion, just a touch more than Microsoft's Bill Gates. The stock rose to a hair above $30 last April and was recently around $28.
(Fortune. 1993.)

(4)=hair ― by the short hairs

The hard fact is that they have got us by the short hairs. We can't do anything without material support from them.
(Collins Cobuild. Dictionary of Idioms.)

He caught me by the arm.

つまり"get (have) ~ by the short hairs"というのは、~の"short hairs"をつかんだ、とった、というのが字義通りの解釈となります。

by the curlies
by the knickers

(3)=hair ― against the hair

It goes against the hair with me.(わたしの性分に合わない、いやだ。)

(2)=hair ― a hair of the dog

a hair of the dog (that bit a person)

The city, famous for its Creole and Cajun cuisine, has evolved its own restorative for the morning after. Instead of the usual mimosa (too bubbly) or Bloody Mary (too spicy), the hair of the dog here is the creamy Ramos gin fizz. I discovered this that first rude morning, when I took refuge in the Carousel Bar, by the lobby in the Hotel Monteleone.
(Wayne Cartis. A Tonic for the Morning After. National Geographic Traveler. 2011.)

(1)=hair ― not turn a hair

His men were so accustomed to his rages that they never turned a hair.
(Collins Cobuild Dictionary of Idioms. 1995.)

Three hours before he sat down with The Telegraph, with the opening ceremony of the 30th Olympiad days away, security contractor G4S revealed to Coe’s chief executive, Paul Deighton, that they were short of about 7,000 security guards.

As pre-Games crises go it was not quite on the Athens scale, but it was up there. Coe barely seemed to turn a hair. “I’m feeling great. I think I’m pretty relaxed. And I’m excited,” he says.
(Paul Kelso. London 2012 Olympics: Lord Coe ready for the off as he says 'every ingredient is in place. But we now have to nail it'. The Telegraph. July 30, 2012.)

手打ち ― bury the hatchet

Facebook and Yahoo bury the hatchet with wide-ranging alliance

Facebook and Yahoo have agreed to forge a broad internet advertising and licensing partnership, laying to rest their duelling patent lawsuits.

The pact settles accusations of technology patent infringement that began under the stewardship of ex-Yahoo CEO Scott Thompson, ousted after a scandal erupted over inaccuracies in his CV. Sources say interim CEO Ross Levinsohn is now the front runner for the top job.
(The Guardian. July 6, 2012.)

Facebook and Yahoo! bury patents hatchet and forge innovation alliance
(Siliconrepublic.com. July 7, 2012.)

Residents can take plenty of other steps to help keep mosquitoes at bay, he said. It's critical, he said, to rid your area of standing water as much as possible.
(Atlanta Journal Constitution. 2012.)

Massachusetts moves to keep health costs at bay

Massachusetts is poised, once again, to become a national bellwether on health care. The question is who’s actually watching?

Bay State lawmakers Tuesday gave final approval and were sending to Gov. Deval Patrick a bill that would pressure the health care industry to keep costs at or below the state’s economic growth rate. They estimate it will squeeze $200 billion in savings over the next 15 years. Patrick supports the bill.
(Kyle Cheney. Massachusetts moves to keep health costs at bay. Politico. July 31, 2012.)

Tooth decay can be held at bay by fluoride toothpaste and good dentistry.
(Collins Cobuild Dictionary of Idioms.)

A SUSPECT in the murder of self-proclaimed vampire gigolo Shane Chartres-Abbott will face court today.

The man has been arrested in Queensland and charged with murder over the 2003 slaying.

He will face Southport Magistrates' Court on the Gold Coast this afternoon.
(Mark Buttler. Accused killer of 'vampire' gigolo killer in court over 2003 murder. Herald Sun. August 7, 2012.)

dancing girl, prostitute

CHEATING AT THE OLYMPICS IS AN AGE OLD TRADITION

From Azerbaijani boxers suspected of fixing matches to badminton players suspended of throwing contests, the 2012 Olympics has earned a gold medal in cheating.

But the latest generation of disgraced Olympians hasn’t done anything their forebears haven’t been doing for thousands of years.

“We like to think there was some golden age when everything was great, but we’re talking about human beings — and we haven’t changed a whole lot,” said David Potter, a classics professor at the University of Michigan.
(Gary Buiso. Cheats as old as a Greek sneak. The New York Post. August 5, 2012.)

to lose intentionally

More than 12 hours after two Korean women's pairs, the Chinese top seeds and an Indonesian pair were booed off the courts at Wembley Arena as they tried to throw two matches on Tuesday night, the sport's governing body annnounced their disqualification after a lengthy disciplinary meeting of its top officials.
(Cahal Milmo. Badminton: Eight players disqualified from London 2012 following match-throwing investigation. The Independent. August 1, 2012.)

― expand the envelope

MEXICO CITY (AP) — Archaeologists say they have found traces of 2,500-year-old chocolate on a plate in the Yucatan peninsula, the first time they have found ancient chocolate residue on a plate rather than a cup, suggesting it may have been used as a condiment or sauce with solid food.

Experts have long thought cacao beans and pods were mainly used in pre-Hispanic cultures as a beverage, made either by crushing the beans and mixing them with liquids or fermenting the pulp that surrounds the beans in the pod. Such a drink was believed to have been reserved for the elite.

But the discovery announced this week by Mexico's National Institute of Anthropology and History expands the envelope of how chocolate may have been used in ancient Mexico.
(Mark Stevenson. Experts: Mayas may have used chocolate as spice. The Associated Press. August 4, 2012.)

The set of limitations within which a technological system, especially an aircraft, can perform safely and effectively.

Our whole deal is about testing the limits, expanding the envelope, getting quicker, going faster. We make changes to the cars to get them to go faster, we break a car in half and we fix it. So we make more changes, break another car in half and fix it.
(Chicago Sun Times. 2007.)

To increase the operating capabilities of a technological system.

― holy moley

A large chunk of a Brooklyn street collapsed yesterday afternoon due to a broken sewer line — creating a nearly 25-by-12-foot sinkhole that almost swallowed two cars parked nearby.

Emergency personnel were called to 79th Street and Fifth Avenue in Bay Ridge about 5 p.m. when the pavement first began to crumble.
(Hole-y moley! B’klyn street collapse. The New York Post. August 12, 2012.)

Hole-y moley! B’klyn street collapse.

"Hole-y moley!"

holy cats
holy cow
holy mackerel
holy smoke

Mitt Romney not yet a member of the ‘thumb tribe’

SAN FRANCISCO — Mitt Romney carries an iPhone and taps his private thoughts on an iPad, but his campaign wants Americans to know he’s pro-Android, too.

Whereas President Barack Obama was heralded as the “BlackBerry president” and got his iPad 2 from Apple co-founder Steve Jobs himself, not much is known about the tech preferences of presumptive GOP presidential nominee Romney.
(Michelle Quinn. Mitt Romney not yet a member of the ‘thumb tribe’. Politico. August 1, 2012.)

Use of hand-held technologies, such as mobile phones, GameBoys and computers, has caused a physical mutation in the under-25s, according to new research.

The study, carried out in nine cities around the world, shows that the thumbs of the younger generation have overtaken their fingers as the hand's most muscled and dexterous digit.

'There are many ways to input information into these devices, but for some reason kids under 25 most often choose to use their thumbs over any other digit. There is no question that choice is having a clear effect on their physicality: thumbs are the new fingers.'

In Japan, the trend was particularly marked. Plant even found the under-25s referred to themselves as oya yubi sedai - the thumb generation, or thumb tribe.
(Amelia Hill. Thumbs are the new fingers for the GameBoy generation. The Guardian. March 24, 2002.)

China’s manufacturing teetered on the edge of contraction in July, signaling a rebound in economic growth has yet to take hold.

The Purchasing Managers’ Index unexpectedly fell to 50.1 in July from 50.2 in June. The reading today from the Beijing-based National Bureau of Statistics and China Federation of Logistics and Purchasing was the weakest in eight months and compares with the 50.5 median estimate in a Bloomberg News survey. A reading above 50 indicates expansion.
(China Manufacturing Teeters Close to Contraction. Bloomberg. July 31, 2012.)

seesaw
teeter-totter
tilt, tilting board
dandle, dandle board
teedle board

teeter on the edge of contraction

動詞の"teeter"はこのように、"teeter on the edge of..."
