glass cliff

For many women working in the U.S., 2016 was a year of disappointment. Women's health organization Planned Parenthood suddenly became endangered; Yahoo CEO Marissa Meyer (sic) fell off the glass cliff; the "female Steve Jobs" turned out to be a hoax; and American voters elected a man who bragged about groping women as their president.

But instead of dwelling on the past, let's look to the future, and in particular workplace policies. There's actually quite a bit for women—and workers in general—to be excited for in 2017.
(Valentina Zaria. Here’s What Working Parents Have to Look Forward to in 2017. Fortune. December 29, 2016.)

fell off the glass cliff

この"glass cliff "という表現は2016年のWord of the Yearにノミネートされた単語の1つです。

glass cliff, n. used with reference to a situation in which a woman or member of a minority group ascends to a leadership position in challenging circumstances where the risk of failure is high.

A popular San Diego-based skateboarding company is mourning the death of one of its own: a 70-year-old veteran skateboarder killed in a motorcycle crash in Santa Ysabel.

“Victor worked at Sector 9 for 15 years during which time he performed a number of jobs as well as being a team rider,” Sector 9’s Facebook post read. “Most of all, he was a great ambassador for skateboarding and a legend to many. He was always down to ride skateboards rain or shine, dirt or asphalt. He was very loved by all and will be sorely missed in the skateboard community."
(Skateboarding Community Mourns Death of 70-Year-Old Rider Killed in Santa Ysabel Crash. NBC 7 SAN Diego. November 30, 2016.)

Collins Cobuild Dictionary of Idioms

If someone does something rain or shine or come rain or shine, they do it regularly, regardless of the weather or other circumstances.

NEW YORK — A stray backpack prompted the partial evacuation of Trump Tower on Tuesday, though bomb squad technicians quickly determined the unattended bag contained children’s toys and was harmless.

Video posted online showed people running through the Manhattan skyscraper’s public lobby as uniformed police officers waved them toward the exits.

Stephen Davis, the New York Police Department’s top spokesman, said the bomb squad gave the “all clear” around 5 p.m. after examining the backpack left near the entrance to Niketown, a store in the building.
(Jennifer Peltz. Stray bag of toys prompts scare at Trump Tower. The Washington Post. December 27, 2016.)

a stray backpack

unattended baggage
unclaimed object
any suspicious objects

ー take the "L"

The standoff between Uber and the California Department of Motor Vehicles over self-driving cars in San Francisco mercifully came to an end last Wednesday, with Uber taking the “L” and removing its cars from San Francisco streets. Now that Uber’s short-lived rebellion is over, spectators are left asking questions like: “What was that all about?”

In a year that government and tech butted heads on many issues and regulations, Uber v. DMV felt extremely unnecessary and petulant. The stake during this weeklong standoff was $150 for a state permit to driving self-driving cars. Uber can afford a trillion state permits, but instead, it went to the barricades, lecturing journalists about how one doesn’t need to wear a belt and suspenders when wearing a dress.
(Seung Y Lee. What was Uber’s endgame in the first place? SAN Francisco Examiner. December 26, 2016.)

taking the "L"

The New York Knicks receive the L for Christmas

It’s Christmas time! What a wonderful time of year for basketball. The first game of the Christmas Day was the Boston Celtics vs the New York Knicks. In a hard fought game, the Knicks fell 114-119. It was an up and down game for New York and in the end, it was defensive woes and forced offense that doomed the Knicks.

unpresidented?

President-elect Donald Trump has risked further inflaming US relations with China, after he used Twitter on Saturday to accuse China of an “unpresidented [sic] act” in its seizing of an unmanned American submarine this week.

“China steals United States Navy research drone in international waters – rips it out of water and takes it to China in unpresidented act,” Trump said, misspelling “unprecedented”.

The tweet was later reissued with the correct spelling of “unprecedented”. The tweet containing the error was deleted.

His message – itself without precedent given his status as a president-elect commenting on an international incident before assuming power – was likely to worsen fears of increased US-China tensions under his presidency that have grown over his rhetoric on trade and policy towards Taiwan.
(Donald Trump accuses China of 'unpresidented' act over US navy drone. The Guardian. December 18, 2016.)

In the December issue of Esquire magazine -- which is accompanied by a cover photo of the president in a distinctly unpresidential pose, his legs spread wide, a sly grin planted on his face, like the Elvis he always wanted to be -- Mr. Clinton added that he had made " a studied effort to change the way the American people felt about the government, to make it seem less distant, less alien, less tone-deaf.
(New York Times, 2001)

As the Christmas season kicks into high gear and we're surrounded by gorgeously decorated fir trees and songs of yuletide gay, it's easy to forget that the holidays represent a grim time in terms of health statistics. You're more likely to die of natural causes from Dec. 25 through New Year's Day than at any other time of the year.

This spike, identified by sociologist David P. Phillips while combing through death certificates in the United States, has been confirmed in subsequent studies using Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and other large data sets. It holds true for all ages except for children and for numerous conditions including heart disease, respiratory problems and cancer.

Speculation about why this happens has ranged from in-law stress to the excesses of eating all that fruitcake and drinking all that eggnog, but the prevailing theory accepted by many doctors and researchers has always been about the weather. The colder it is, the more vulnerable people's bodies might be to having a complication from a heart attack, flu or other ailment that they can't recover from.
(Ariana Eunjung Cha. Mystery of the spike in deaths between Christmas and New Year’s gets curiouser and curiouser. The Washington Post. December 22, 2016.)

How many times do you hear people getting married being frustrated or upset with their in-laws?

On your wedding day, you marry your partner, but get the in-laws for free. And herein lies the challenge. Whilst you can do all of the due diligence that you like about the person that you want to spend all of your life with, you can often end up getting more than you bargained for – as your marriage creates new relationships between you and the in laws, as well as changing the relationships that your partner has with their family.

Putting it simply, there are no guarantees that the person you love has family that you will love. Or that they will love you. When you find yourself in this circumstance, what can you do?
(Philip Owens. DEALING WITH IN-LAW STRESS. Reflective Resolutions. May 11, 2016.)

’TIS THE SEASON OF IN-LAWS: that special time of year when married people all over the country prepare to unite under one roof with the families that brought their significant others into the world. Careful questions will be asked about how work has been going. Offers to help with the dishes will be extended with practiced earnestness. Some tongues will be held; others won’t be.
(Leon Neyfakh. The weird science of in-laws. The Boston Globe. November 17, 2013.)

WASHINGTON — Sen. Chuck Schumer turned into Scrooge this holiday season by firing a group of Democratic staffers just before Christmas.

The incoming Senate minority leader gave a bah-humbug dismissal to nearly all members of the Senate Democratic Media Center on Friday to make way for a more media-savvy team for the camera-friendly Brooklyn senator, Politico reported.
(Marisa Schulz. Chuck Schumer fires staffers right before the holidays. New York Post. December 21, 2016.)

bah-humbug dismissal

An expression used to show digust at the Christmas season, made famous by the fictional character Ebinizer Scrooge in the Charles Dickens novel 'A Christmas Carol'
(Urban Dictionary)

We're entering that time of year when I remind people to be kind to atheists. Remember, Christmas capitalism has room for all of us.

Yes, I'm an atheist. Not one who's evangelistic about it. No, I'm more your garden variety non-believer who's confident that when you're dead the lights go out. See you later.

I am far from alone. Yet, despite this, most of my fellow New Zealanders celebrate Christmas like they were fresh out of divinity school.

Not me, baby. I regard Christmas as a total no-go zone. Even if I were a pious pew pusher I still can't imagine condoning the orgy of consumerism, and buying into the endless sinkhole of ever more garbage waiting to be binned.
(Rachel Stewart: Bah humbug! Why Christmas is killing us all. New Zealand Herald. December 21, 2016.)

It's highly likely that a child in your family will get an iPad or a hand-me-down iPhone as a gift this holiday. Their shiny, new iDevice gives them access to amazing technology. But it also puts both them and you at some risk too.
(How to turn on iOS parental controls in 20 seconds video. CNET. December 21, 2016.)

hand-me-downs

となります。

smoke

FDA Smokes Black Box Warning on Chantix

The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved dropping the black box warning regarding possible serious neuropsychiatric side effects with Pfizer's smoking cessation drug varenicline (Chantix, Champix), Pfizer said on December 16.

The FDA first put a black box warning on varenicline in 2009 after receiving reports linking the drug to psychiatric side effects, including suicidal thoughts, hostility, and agitation.

Earlier this year, a joint FDA advisory committee voted to remove a box warning about possible neuropsychiatric side effects. As reported by Medscape Medical News, members of the Psychopharmacologic Drug Advisory Committee and the Drug Safety and Risk Management Advisory Committee concluded that in light of results of a large postmarketing randomized clinical trial, the box warning on varenicline is not warranted. The FDA agreed.
(Megan Brooks. FDA Smokes Black Box Warning on Chantix. Medscape. December 19, 2016.)

electoral college

When the Electoral College meets Monday for the 58th time in American history to cast the only official vote for president, its 538 members will be acting as the most powerful political institution in the world.

Yet there’s little understanding of who these 306 Republicans and 232 Democrats are, the role they play, or how they were selected. That’s because presidential electors have never done anything more than rubber-stamp the results of the general election.
(Kyle Cheney. Who are the electors? Politico. December 18, 2016.)

Draconian

LONDON — In November, Scottish First Minister Nicola Sturgeon said she would explore offering Northern Irish women a free and legal means to terminate their pregnancy.

Around the world, 58 of 196 countries provide abortions on request, and 134 of 196 countries only allow abortions to preserve a woman's physical health.

Six countries — El Salvador, Malta, the Vatican, Chile, the Dominican Republic, and Nicaragua — still refuse abortions to women under any circumstances, even if it's to save her life. It means that under many circumstances, such as rape, incest, or if the fetus has a severe abnormality, women still must bring a pregnancy to term.

Developing countries, which have the strictest laws around ending a pregnancy, have the highest unsafe abortion rates. It is estimated that around the world, 78,000 deaths result from unsafe abortions every year. These are the countries with the strictest abortion laws around the globe.
(Andree Gorman. The 9 countries with the most draconian abortion laws in the world. Business Insider. December 16, 2016.)

the most draconian abortion laws

flat earther

The label “flat earther” is usually reserved for skeptics of man-made global warming, but now President-elect Donald Trump’s team is comparing climate science “consensus” to the belief the world was flat.

“[W]e did a lot of things wrong in the scientific community,” Anthony Scaramucci, a member of Trump’s executive committee, said on CNN Wednesday, according to Politico. Scaramucci was responding to the often used talking point that the scientific “consensus” backs man-made global warming.
(Michael Bastasch. Trump Team Turns ‘Flat Earther’ Label Against Climate Activists. Daily Caller. December 14, 2016.)

Rudolph

A smaller Rudolph? Scientists say reindeer are shrinking

STOCKHOLM -- Reindeer living on the Arctic island of Svalbard are getting smaller — and scientists say climate change may be the cause.

Scientists from Britain and Norway have found that adult Svalbard reindeer born in 2010 weigh 12 percent less on average than those born in 1994.

Ecologist Steve Albon of Scotland’s James Hutton Institute says rising temperatures in the Arctic mean Svalbard is getting more rain, creating a hard ice sheet the island’s reindeer can’t easily break through to reach food.
(A smaller Rudolph? Scientists say reindeer are shrinking. CBS News. December 12, 2016.)

Rudolph

Iran is prepared to start World War III if the Trump administration meddles with its nuclear pact, according to a top official from the Mideast country — who tempered his saber-rattling by saying such an outcome is unlikely because the president-elect is, above all else, a businessman.

“Considering Trump’s character and that he measures the cost of everything in dollars, it does not seem likely that he would take strong action against our country,” Iranian Defense Minister Hossein Dehghan told a security conference in the capital of Tehran on Sunday.
(Jamie Schram. Iran warns of World War III if Trump revamps nuclear pact. New York Post. December 12, 2016.)

The simmering distrust between Donald Trump and U.S. intelligence agencies escalated into open antagonism Saturday after the president-elect mocked a CIA report that Russian operatives had intervened in the U.S. presidential election to help him win.

The growing tensions set up a potential showdown between Trump and the nation’s top intelligence officials during what some of those officials describe as the most complex threat environment in decades.
(Trump, CIA on collision course over Russia’s role in U.S. election. The Washington Post. December 10, 2016.)

Trump, CIA on collision course over Russia’s role in U.S. election

collision course

American Heritage Dictionary

A course, as of moving objects or opposing philosophies, that will end in a collision or conflict if left unchanged

― champion

The 21st Century Cures Act that gained congressional approval on Wednesday has been championed as a way to speed up drug development, but it's also the most significant piece of mental health legislation since the 2008 law requiring equal insurance coverage for mental and physical health.

The bill includes provisions aimed at fighting the opioid epidemic, strengthens laws mandating parity for mental and physical health care and includes grants to increase the number of psychologists and psychiatrists, who are in short supply across the country.

It also would push states to provide early intervention for psychosis, a treatment program that has been hailed as one of the most promising mental health developments in decades.
(Liz Szabo. Mental Health Care Gets A Boost From 21st Century Cures Act. NPR. December 7, 2016.)

The 21st Century Cures Act that gained congressional approval on Wednesday has been championed as a way to speed up drug development

One that wins first place or first prize in a competition
(American Heritage Dictionary)

To fight for, defend, or support as a champion: championed the cause of civil rights
(ibid.)

miles from

New research demonstrates that, in mice whose brains are under attack by Alzheimer’s dementia, exposure to lights that flicker at a precise frequency can right the brain’s faulty signaling and energize its immune cells to fight off the disease.

Light therapy for Alzheimer’s is miles from being ready to treat patients — even those with the earliest signs of the disease. But the new research has already prompted creation of a start-up company — Cognito Therapeutics Inc. — to approach the Food and Drug Administration about clinical trials, and to explore ways to deliver precisely calibrated flickers of light to human research subjects.
(Melissa Healy. Flickering lights may illuminate a path to Alzheimer's treatment. Los Angeles Times. December 7, 2016.)

Light therapy for Alzheimer’s is miles from being ready to treat patients

rookie

Chinese state media denounced the U.S. president-elect as a "diplomatic rookie" on Tuesday, hitting him for his phone call with the leader of Taiwan, Tsai Ing-wen, and his subsequent comments about China's government.

"Provoking friction and messing up China-US relations won't help 'make America great again,'" said a front-page opinion piece in the overseas edition of the People's Daily, the mouthpiece of China's Communist Party, reports the AFP wire service.

The Global Times' Chinese edition hit Trump for his "inability to keep his mouth shut," and his "provocation and falsehoods," according to AFP.
(David M Jackson. China hits Trump as 'diplomatic rookie.' USA Today. December 6, 2016.)

Chinese state media

diplomatic rookie

"Rookie"

American Heritage Dictionary

A first-year player, especially in a professional sport.

a. An untrained or inexperienced recruit, as in the army or police.
b. An inexperienced person; a novice.

"Diplomatic rookie"

pleasantry

The verbal confrontation between President-elect Donald Trump and the Chinese government escalated on Monday, as China responded harshly to attacks by Mr. Trump on its economic and security positions.

The exchange signaled a new and potentially more adversarial relationship between the world’s two largest economies, as Mr. Trump moves to follow through on his campaign-trail promises to challenge China’s trade and currency policies.

Chinese officials had suggested late Friday and early Saturday that they were willing to overlook Mr. Trump’s precedent-breaking phone call with Taiwan President Tsai Ing-wen, which a transition official said had been arranged by Bob Dole, the former Republican senator and presidential nominee. The call went beyond pleasantries and included a discussion about China and stability in the Asia-Pacific, according to a person familiar with the call. The Chinese directed their ire at Taiwan and not at Mr. Trump.

But they signaled their displeasure with a series of Twitter posts Mr. Trump leveled at China over the weekend, as he criticized its currency policies and military presence in the South China Sea.
(Donald Trump’s Message Sparks Anger in China. The Wall Street Journal. December 5, 2016.)

the call went beyong pleasantries

MOSCOW — Russian President Vladimir Putin delivered something of a backhanded compliment to Donald Trump on Sunday, saying the U.S. president-elect is smart enough to understand that he’s going to shoulder a whole new level of responsibilities come January.

“To the extent that he was able to achieve success in business, this shows that he’s a smart person,” Putin said in snippets of an interview with broadcaster NTV set to be aired in full Sunday evening. “And if he’s a smart person, that means that he will totally and quite quickly understand the different level of his responsibility [as a statesman]. We presume that he will act based on this position.”
(Andrew Roth. Putin just called Trump ‘smart,’ but it’s not entirely a compliment. The Washington Post. December 4, 2016.)

“To the extent that he was able to achieve success in business, this shows that he’s a smart person,”

“And if he’s a smart person, that means that he will totally and quite quickly understand the different level of his responsibility [as a statesman]. We presume that he will act based on this position.”

typosquatting

SAN FRANCISCO – The proliferation of fake news has shone a light on another murky corner the web, the practice of typosquatting.

These are the URLs that pass for common ones — say Amazoon.com instead of Amazon.com — if the user isn't paying close attention to the Web address.

Always eager to capitalize on human inattention, cyber criminals have embraced this method of registering a commonly misspelled Web address to use as a base for the distribution of malware or to steal information from unsuspecting users.
(Elizabeth Weise. Hackers use typosquatting to dupe the unwary with fake news, sites. USA Today. December 1, 2016.)

― campaign

A new malware campaign has been discovered in over 1 million Android devices, according to a new report from the security firm Check Point. Dubbed “Googlian” by the firm, the campaign first emerged in August, and is currently compromising devices at a rate of roughly 13,000 per day.

The malware targets vulnerabilities in Android versions 4 and 5 (Jelly Bean, Kit Kat, and Marshmallow), and spreads through seemingly legitimate apps in third-party app stores. More than half the infections are in Asia, where third-party app stores are particularly popular.
(Russel Brandom. App-installing malware found in over 1 million Android phones. The Verge. November 30, 2016.)

(campaign financial report

An operation or series of operations energetically pursued to accomplish a purpose

A series of military operations undertaken to achieve a large-scale objective during a war

The killing was part of a terror campaign targeting the independent mass media, Mikhail Seslavinsky, deputy press minister, told ITAR-Tass.
(AP, 2003)

State media launched a smear campaign against the groups last year.
(Christian Science Monitor, 2012)

crossbench

The government has successfully passed the legislation to re-establish the ABCC construction watchdog, marking a key victory for Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull who used the legislation to trigger this year's double dissolution election.

The government secured the crossbench votes it needed after frenzied deal-making and horse-trading in the final parliamentary sitting week of 2016.

The victory, with 36 votes to 33, was locked in after a handshake deal with crossbench senator Derryn Hinch, who was concerned about retrospectivity, and gifts for the the Nick Xenophon Team, including concessions on the Murray-Darling Basin Plan and an overhaul of government procurement policy to favour Australian businesses.
(Fergus Hunter. Malcolm Turnbull secures ABCC win after frenzied deal-making with crossbenchers. The Age. November 30, 2016.)

thin ice

A Japanese theme park was harpooned for its display featuring 5,000 dead fish frozen into a skating rink — prematurely nixing the display this weekend over the icy reception.

“We received critical voices saying it is not good to use creatures as a toy, and that it is bad to let food go to waste,” spokesman Koji Shibata told Agence France-Presse, adding that the park had earlier had internal “discussions over the morality of the idea.”

Space World procured already-dead sea creatures that were considered unfit for sale, Shibata said.

Japanese theme park on thin ice after freezing dead fish into skating rink

"On thin ice"

enter the picture

The California state bar association is considering banning lawyers from having sex with clients - and some lawyers aren't too happy about it.

While the state currently bars lawyers from coercing or demanding sex for legal representation, 'consensual' sex has not been considered a violation of legal ethics, reports The Los Angeles Times. That could change.

Supporters of the proposed ban say the relationship between a lawyer and client is always inherently power imbalanced, therefore sex should not enter the picture for a lawyer to ethically represent a client's best interests.
(Kiri Blakeley. The California bar association is set to ban lawyers from having sex with clients. Daily Mail. November 28, 2016.)

therefore sex should not enter the picture for a lawyer to ethically represent a client's best interests

As the economy worsens, largely because so many people took out mortgages they could not afford, the nation is questioning how credit could have been made so easily available and why consumers were so eager to accept it. But experts say it is behavior that begins at an early age. Decades ago, it wasn't until one had a career, a spouse, even a child that credit cards typically entered the picture. Now, once people turn 18, they are bombarded with credit card offers.

baby step

TOKYO -- Japan is poised to start accepting foreign workers for its budding market for housekeeping services under a policy initiative to improve the working environment for women.

The law regulating "special zones" to promote the government's growth strategy was revised in 2015 to allow foreigners to work in the Japanese housekeeping services industry. Many housemaids from the Philippines will start working in the sector early next year.

The government has taken the step to support working women by providing a new way to reduce the burden of household chores.

alphabet soup

June is LGBT pride month, an annual anti-discrimination effort made official last year with a proclamation from President Obama.

LGBT -- meaning lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender -- is a widely accepted initialism. However, a fifth letter is increasingly making its way into the line-up: Q.

Q can mean either 'questioning' or 'queer,' Fred Sainz, a spokesman for the Human Rights Campaign, an organization that lobbies for LGBT rights, told USA TODAY Network. Either interpretation is accepted, he said.
(Lori Grisham. What does the Q in LGBTQ stand for? USA Today. July 22, 2016.)

LGBTQ is just one set of initials being used. There are other letters and combinations -- so many that some call it "alphabet soup."
(ibid.)

alphabet soup

The federal government really needed information technology to implement ideas at the core of the Bush administration's agenda, " said James A. Kane, chief executive of Federal Sources.

More people are dying for the perfect selfie.

A new study – titled, “Me, Myself and My Killfie: Characterizing and Preventing Selfie Deaths” – found that 127 people have died in a 29-month span through last September while trying to get photos of themselves at dangerous or exotic locations. The overwhelming majority of the deaths compiled by researchers occurred in India, where 76 people died. In the United States, there were eight selfie-related deaths.
(Joshua Rhett Miller. Selfie deaths are slowly rising around the world. New York Post. November 21, 2016.)

In the world’s first in-depth study into “selfie deaths”, academics from three universities set out to understand why people end up dying whilst taking pictures of themselves.

They claimed the first "killfie" took place in 2014, with the death toll quickly accelerating.

wee hours

Daylight saving time ends at 2 a.m. Sunday, giving folks an extra hour of sleep if they want it but meaning darkness will be closing in when most people leave work.

You won't want to forget to set your clocks back. The best strategy is to do it before you go to sleep Saturday night.
(Central Standard Time returns in the wee hours Sunday. Columbia Missourian. November 6, 2016.)

Cambridge Dictionary

the early hours of the morning, between twelve o'clock at night and the time when the sun rises

Oxford Dictionaries chose the word of the year and it’s a doozy.

The 2016 word is “post-truth” which is defined as ‘relating to or denoting circumstances in which objective facts are less influential in shaping public opinion than appeals to emotion and personal belief.”
(Eliza Collins. No lie, 'post-truth' is the Oxford Dictionaries' Word of the Year. USA Today. November 16, 2016.)

belonging to a time in which the specified concept has become unimportant or irrelevant
(Oxford Dictionary)

Athletic shoe company New Balance continues to endure a public relations backlash after a company executive's perceived pro-Donald Trump comments were embraced by a white supremacist blogger who deemed their shoes "the official shoes of white people."

In response, the U.S.-based private company is blanketing social media with statements that it "does not tolerate bigotry or hate in any form."
(Mike Snider. New Balance sprint from 'white people' shoes tag spotlights PR dilemma. USA Today. November 17, 2016.)

"New Balance does not tolerate bigotry or hate in any form," read a statement released Monday that was posted on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter. "One of our officials was recently asked to comment on a trade policy that was taken out of context. As a 110-year old company with five factories in the U.S. and thousands of employees worldwide from all races, genders, cultures and sexual orientations, New Balance is a values-driven organization and culture that believes in humanity, integrity, community and mutual respect for people around the world."
(ibid.)

The situation highlights the landmines that companies face in a post-election marketplace with a divided constituency of consumers. With the nation's voting population split down the center, a company taking a political stand, either intentionally or inadvertently, risks alienating nearly half of its potential customer base. And the speed in which kerfuffles spread over social media can increase the damage caused by a public relations slip-up or misunderstanding.
(ibid.)

New York Times Rips Trump's “Clannishness

On the front-page of the November 12 edition of the New York Times, there was a story on how hiring is shaping up in the Trump administration. It noted that three of his children, Ivanka, Donald Jr. and Eric, and his son-in-law, Jared Kushner, were named to the transition team. “The Trump family, it is clear,” the news story said, “will wield unusual power in the composition of an administration that is already shaping up as remarkable for its clannishness.”

“Clannishness”? Why is that a problem? The New York Times wrote the book on it. The following is a statement I released on October 19. It takes on new significance now that the newspaper is furious with Trump's “clannishness.”
(Bill Donohue. New York Times Rips Trump's “Clannishness.” News Busters. November 15, 2016.)

hawk

Our future First Daughter just got her wrist slapped.

Ivanka Trump’s jewelry company went into mea culpa mode and apologized after marketing the $10,800 bracelet the President-elect’s daughter wore during a “60 Minutes” interview on Sunday with her father and family.

“History can now record that the 1st monetization of the Trump presidency was the hawking of a $10,800 bracelet,” succinctly tweeted @peterwsinger.
(Joe Dziewianowicz. Ivanka Trump’s jewelry company apologizes for hawking bracelet worn on ‘60 Minutes.’ New York Daily News. November 15, 2016.)

misogyny

Merriam-Webster Dictionary searches for the word ‘misogyny,’ among others, are on the rise in the days following Donald Trump’s victory.

In a Nov. 13 tweet, Merriam-Webster released the top word lookups right now — and needless to say, the results are a little depressing.

Here they are:
fascism
bigot
xenophobe
racism
socialism
resurgence
xenophobia
misogyny

Searches for “fascism” also spiked on Google Trends following the election, when Donald Trump won the presidency, Gizmodoreported. And according to Merriam-Webster, searches for these words increased more than usual.
(Sophia Tulp. The troubling list of words everyone's looking up since Trump won. USA Today. November 14, 2016.)

sour note

Splenda lawsuit hits sour note with Dunkin' Donuts

INDIANAPOLIS — Life isn't so sweet for Splenda in what could turn into a bitter courtroom battle.

Heartland Consumer Products, the Carmel-based company behind Splenda, is suing Dunkin' Brands Inc., alleging the company is misleading consumers into thinking they are getting the real Splenda when it’s just a knockoff.
(Splenda lawsuit hits sour note with Dunkin' Donuts. USA Today. November 13, 2016.)

Dunkin Donuts

Splenda lawsuit hits sour note with Dunkin' Donuts

(Merriam-Webster Dictionaryの例文に"Their relationship ended on a sour note."

― root

President Barack Obama today said he is ready to welcome President-elect Donald Trump to the White House to ensure a "successful transition between our presidencies."

"We are now all rooting for his success in uniting and leading the country," Obama said in a statement in the Rose Garden. "The peaceful transition of power is one of the hallmarks of our democracy, and over the next few months we are going to show that to the world."

In a phone call at around 3:30 a.m., Obama extended an invitation to Trump to meet at the White House on Thursday.
(Obama 'Rooting' for Trump's Success in Uniting Country. ABC News. September 9, 2016.)

"We are now all rooting for his success in uniting and leading the country"

Merriam-Webster Dictionary

to noisily applaud or encourage a contestant or team
to wish the success or lend support to someone or something

A friend recently told me about the humble brag. I was intrigued by this concept, which apparently really is a thing and has been defined (and certainly used and perhaps overused) for quite some time now.

Urban Dictionary defines the humble brag as “subtly letting others know about how fantastic your life is while undercutting it with a bit of self-effacing humor or ‘woe is me’” gloss.
(Rachel Levy Lesser. What’s Up With The Humble Brag? Huffington Post. September 21, 2015.)

Here are a few humble brags (just so we are clear on how these work) that have crossed my path:

Another mother recently told me how she is so busy and overwhelmed running around to a couple different schools because one of her children is “so advanced” (her exact words!) that this child has to go to a school separate from her other children (assumingly her non-advanced kids I guess?) You get it right? The humbleness is in how tough her life is because her kids are on different school schedules and the bragging part lies in her admission that she is the mother of a “so advanced” child — a genius perhaps? Hmm, I wasn’t really sure how to respond to that. I just smiled trying not to throw up in my mouth.
(ibid.)

second wind

アメリカではNES(Nintendo Entertainment System)と呼ばれるようですが、やはり復刻されるそうです。

This week, revamped versions of two classic video game consoles – the Nintendo Entertainment System and the Sega Genesis – went back on the market.

These consoles may boast some upgraded tech, but both feature the same 8-bit and 16-bit games that made them famous.

In the past decade, there has been a market resurgence for long-dead technologies. Suddenly, consumers are buying up record players, cassette tapes, and old video game consoles like it's 1985. But are we living in a new age of nostalgia, induced by the changing world around us? Or have we always been living – at least a little bit – in the past?
(Joseph Dussault. Why classic video games are getting a second wind. Christian Science Monitor. November 8, 2016.)

Why classic video games are getting a second wind

vlogger

Children need to be protected from pervasive junk food adverts in apps, social media and video blogs, the World Health Organization says.

Its report warns parents are often unaware of the sheer volume of such adverts as they are precisely targeting children.

The report attacked the way some video bloggers - vloggers - get paid by junk food retailers to promote their food.

It quotes a US analysis that suggests vloggers are now more influential at promoting brands than film or TV because of perceived authenticity.

It also raised concern about the way fast food chains encourage kids through their doors by making restaurants important locations in augmented reality games like Pokemon Go.
(James Gallagher. Stop junk food ads on kids' apps - WHO. BBC News. November 4, 2016.)

stump speech

RENO, Nevada – Donald Trump was rushed off a stage here Saturday by Secret Service agents during a campaign speech after an incident in the crowd near the front of the stage.

A Secret Service spokesperson said in a statement there was a commotion in the crowd and an “unidentified individual” shouted “gun,” though no weapon was found after a “thorough search.”

A man, who later identified himself to reporters as Austyn Crites, was then immediately detained and led out by a throng of police officers, Secret Service agents and SWAT officers armed with assault rifles to a side room.

Trump was in the middle of his stump speech when the commotion occurred. He was looking into the crowd, his hand over his eyes to block the glare from the stage lights, when Secret Service agents grabbed him and escorted him off the stage. Trump ducked his head as he left the stage.
(Trump protester says he wasn’t planted by Dems. Fox News. November 6, 2016.)

the Peach State

Washington (CNN) — A new poll's findings raise the question if Hillary Clinton may have chosen the wrong state to try and flip.

The Democratic nominee sits just 1 point behind Donald Trump in Georgia but 5 points behind Trump in Arizona, according to a new NBC News/Wall Street Journal survey.

Trump's edge in the Peach State is well within the poll's margin of error.
(Theodore Shcleifer. Poll: Trump, Clinton neck and neck in Georgia. CNN. November 3, 2016.)

the Peach State

"Gotham city"

pass gas

A Japanese woman passed gas during laser surgery. She was badly burned.
(The Washington Post. November 1, 2016.)

Ninety-nine percent of the colorless, but certainly not odorless, gas released when one “passes gas” is a combination of carbon dioxide, hydrogen, nitrogen, oxygen and methane.

The last 1 percent is made of bacteria from your intestines, which is what causes the odor.
(ibid.)

Most of the components of flatulence are innocuous, but the hydrogen and methane in the gas also render the gas flammable.

For the most part, that flammability isn’t cause for concern. If anything, it’s a source of humor among young boys at sleep-away camp.

But for one woman in Japan, that flammability proved to have a tragic and lasting impact.

The woman, in her 30s, who has not been named, was undergoing a surgery on her cervix at the Tokyo Medical University Hospital in Shinjuku Ward on April 15. In the midst of the operation, while doctors focused a laser on her cervix, the lower part of the uterus, the woman passed gas.

It’s difficult to overstate how minuscule the chance of that normal bodily function causing a problem truly is.
(ibid.)

OSAKA – A rooster raised by Osaka’s Tennoji Zoo as food for other animals has now become an attraction himself, after thrice managing to avoid the gallows and a grim fate as fare for his fellows.

It seems a belief has taken hold among some visitors that the animal’s remarkable streak of luck may rub off on them.

The bird, which has been dubbed Masahiro, often draws crowds as he struts around the zoo in the evenings.
(Thrice spared death, Osaka zoo rooster draws crowds looking to get lucky. The Japan Times. November 1, 2016.)

the animal’s remarkable streak of luck may rub off on them

― grinch

The Grinch is stealing Christmas from the airlines.

With the holiday falling on a Sunday this year, lots of students are expected to remain in class until the holiday weekend, which could discourage travel to visit relatives. Airlines are bracing for coal in their December stockings that might not be redeemed even in January.

Marty St. George, JetBlue’s executive vice president for commercial and planning, told investment analysts Tuesday that December revenue could suffer 3 percentage points compared to 2015.
(Bart Jansen. Is the Grinch stealing Christmas from the airlines? USA Today. October 28, 2016.)

The Grinch is stealing Christmas

How the Grinch Stole Christmas"(1957)に出てくる主人公の名前で、童話のタイトルにある通り、クリスマスを台無しにしようと目論んだ張本人です。

ー get-up

It's that time of year when celebrities apologize for their offensive Halloween costumes.

So, who's immediately regretting her choice of holiday wear this year? That would be Hilary Duff, who attended the Casamigos Halloween Party Friday in Beverly Hills. The Younger and Lizzie Maguire star went out with her boyfriend, trainer Jason Walsh, dressed as a pilgrim and a Native American. She had on a short black outfit, and he wore a feather headdress and face paint.
(Hilary Duff is 'SO sorry' about her offensive Halloween costume. USA Today. October 31, 2016.)

And so, Duff tweeted that she was "SO sorry" for offending people with her get-up. "It was not properly thought through," she said.
(ibid.)

Merriam-Webster

an unusual outfit or costume

eat one's words

A North Carolina grandma was just trying to teach her husband a lesson on wasteful spending on Saturday when she forked over $10 for a scratch-off lottery ticket.

But the lesson backfired and Glenda Blackwell, 57, won a cool $1M after purchasing a winning Carolina Millions ticket from her local Leicester Suttles Quik Mart.

"I was going to be ugly and buy a scratch off to show him they didn't hit," Blackwell told WLOS.

Blackwell bought the ticket in an effort to get her husband Buddy to save his money after he asked her to buy him two Powerball tickets.

"I had to eat my words, but they were worth eating," Blackwell quipped.

had to eat my words

Of course Bob Dylan ignored the Nobel Prize, he’s the the antithesis of a pop icon

Bob Dylan is being taken to task for his silence after he was announced the winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature, but as Alan Franks writes, the impact of his work cannot be denied – and his aplomb here is just part of the package。

It had to happen. Someone in the Swedish Academy just had to pull Bob Dylan up on his manners.
(Alan Franks. Of course Bob Dylan ignored the Nobel Prize, he’s the the antithesis of a pop icon. The Independent. October 26, 2016.)

To check the action of: The remark pulled him up short.

― lights-out

The heyday of Apple's lights-out iPhone growth has passed.

Since introducing the hugely popular iPhone 6 two years ago, the tech giant has labored to spark the intense consumer passion it has counted on to make the iPhone an even-better seller year after year.

Apple is still struggling to reignite interest. The iPhone 7, which went on sale last month, has an improved camera and is water resistant. But it looks an awful lot like the iPhone 6, and that may not give consumers enough enticement to upgrade.
(Ben Fox Rubin. iPhone sales slump. Apple still raking in billions. CNET. October 25, 2016.)

lights-out

if a machine or manufacturing process runs lights-out, it is controlled by a computer and does not need a human to be present in order to operate or supervise it

A little dishonesty goes a long way. Scientists who studied the brain activity of people who told small lies to benefit themselves found that these fibs appeared to pave the way to telling whoppers later.

The findings, published in the journal Nature Neuroscience, demonstrate how self-serving lies can escalate and offer a window into the processes in the brain at work.

It’s commonly held wisdom that small transgressions often lead to bigger and bigger ones, study coauthor Tali Sharot of University College London said in a news briefing.
(Amina Khan. Neuroscientists show how tiny fibs snowball into big lies. Los Angeles Times. October 24, 2016.)

whopper

Hillary Clinton has vaulted to a double-digit advantage in the inaugural ABC News 2016 election tracking poll, boosted by broad disapproval of Donald Trump on two controversial issues: His treatment of women and his reluctance to endorse the election’s legitimacy.

Likely voters by a vast 69-24 percent disapprove of Trump’s response to questions about his treatment of women. After a series of allegations of past sexual misconduct, the poll finds that some women who’d initially given him the benefit of the doubt have since moved away.
(Clinton Vaults to a Double-Digit Lead. ABC News. October 23, 2016.)

...some women who’d initially given him the benefit of the doubt have since moved away.

benefit of the doubt

doubt(疑い、嫌疑)というbenefit(ベネフィット、利益)とは日本語としてはやや腑に落ちないものがあります。

bad hombre

It was expected that Donald Trump would double down on his determined plan to build a wall while addressing the topic of immigration Wednesday night. But what wasn’t expected, was his comment that followed.

“We have some bad hombres here, and we’re going to get them out,” Trump promised.

Hillary Clinton grinned as Trump finished his statement.

Thousands of people took to Twitter to discuss Trump’s bilingual moment, and people began to ask: Who are the “bad hombres”?

Merriam-Webster was quick to jump in to define the new term Trump introduced on the debate stage.
(Jennifer Earl. Donald Trump's "bad hombres" comment causes confusion. CBS News. October 19, 2016.)

2016年のWord of the Yearになるかもしれません!?

A defiant Donald Trump used the high-profile setting of the final presidential debate here Wednesday night to amplify one of the most explosive charges of his candidacy: that if he loses the election, he might consider the outcome illegitimate because the process is rigged.

Questioned directly as to whether he would accept the outcome should Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton prevail on Nov. 8, Trump demurred. "I will keep you in suspense," the Republican nominee said. Clinton called Trump's answer "horrifying," saying he was "talking down our democracy."
(Trump refuses to say he will accept election results; Clinton calls it 'horrifying.' Chicago Tribune. October 19, 2016.)

the process is rigged

run in the family

Do Running Injuries Run in the Family?

If you give an identical training program to 10 different runners, you’ll get 10 different results—even if they all start from the same baseline and follow the training program faithfully. This idea of genetic variation in the response to training has been discussed a lot over the past few years, thanks in part to books like David Epstein’s The Sports Gene.
(Alex Hutchinson. Do Running Injuries Run in the Family? Runner's World. November 11, 2015.)

― cozy

Emails obtained by Motherboard show that Pittsburgh Mayor Bill Peduto has an extremely cosy relationship with Uber’s CEO Travis Kalanick. The mayor has actively attempted to influence government proceedings on behalf of the ride-sharing giant.

The most eyebrow-raising revelation is that Mayor Peduto was actively in contact with Kalanick when he wrote a letter to the state of Pennsylvania’s Public Utility Commission which had fined Uber for operating without permission. The letter begged for leniency in the case because Uber “is investing hundreds of millions of dollars in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and is poised to invest millions more.”
(Rhett Jones. Emails Reveal Shady Relationship Between Uber CEO And Pittsburgh's Mayor. Gizmodo Australia. October 17, 2016.)

But the AP investigation found that with billions of dollars and 19 percent of America's electricity supply at stake, a cozy relationship prevails between the industry and its regulator, the NRC.

molotov cocktail

Local GOP office struck by molotov cocktail in North Carolina

A local Republican Party office in North Carolina was damaged by fire and someone spray-painted an anti-GOP slogan referring to “Nazi Republicans” on a nearby wall, authorities said Sunday.

A news release from the town of Hillsborough said someone threw a bottle filled with flammable liquid through the window of the Orange County Republican Party headquarters overnight. The substance ignited and damaged furniture and the interior before burning out.
(Local GOP office struck by molotov cocktail in North Carolina. The Washington Post. October 16, 2016.)

果たして、"molotov cocktail"とは、"a bottle filled with flammable liquid"のことであろうと推測がついたのでした。

Donald Trump cast himself in almost messianic terms Thursday in Florida, describing the presidential race as "a struggle for the survival of our nation" and vowing to win the White House despite all the "slings and arrows" being hurled in his direction.
(Maeve Reston. Donald Trump is running out of ways to win. CNN. October 14, 2016.)

slings and arrows

Wells Fargo CEO John Stumpf is retiring with a nest egg that would make any retiree envious.

At $134 million, the 63-year-old's retirement fund will pull in $3.6 million a year if he bases his planning on living to age 100 before investment income or inflation are taken into account.

Having spent 34 years at Wells Fargo, Stumpf is retiring immediately from the CEO position, which he assumed in June 2007.

He leaves under a cloud, a scandal in which employees opened as many as 2 million accounts in the names of customers without their authorization. More than 5,000 Wells Fargo workers were fired, but not Stumpf or other senior management. Stumpf's attempt to explain the debacle before a Senate committee didn't help matters.
(Well Fargo's Stumpf may envy exit pay of other CEOs. USA Today. October 12, 2016.)

nest egg

Merriam-Webster Dictionary

a natural or artificial egg left in a nest especially to induce a hen to continue to lay there

gamification

Have you heard of gamification? It’s not a new trend, and it has been sweeping creative marketing professionals all over the world for several years now. If you’re new to the world of gamification, it’s basically the use of video games and the elements of playing a game with scoring points, competition and rules in an online marketing technique. It’s designed to put more fun into marketing, and it has the ability to develop strong and loyal followers to your product or brand.
(Gamification: Can Video Games Help Market Your Small Business? CBS News. October 7, 2016.)

Merriam-Webster Dictionary

the process of adding games or gamelike elements to something (as a task) so as to encourage participation

Perhaps the biggest example of the use of gamification in marketing now is through the mega-hit app Pokémon Go. It was quickly released as the most popular mobile application of all time, slaughtering all previous records and finding its way onto the cell phones of users ages eight to 80. You can go outside at nearly any time of the day, head to any cultural landmark in your city and find people there, eagerly seeking out the augmented reality Pocket Monsters as they whip the Pokémon balls and try to catch them all.
(ibid.)

ship-jumping

Donald Trump’s campaign manager Kellyanne Conway has blasted ship-jumping GOP lawmakers — strongly hinting some of those turncoats are sexual harassers themselves who have even targeted her for unwanted advances.

Conway’s stunning allegations went largely unnoticed in the media storm following Sunday night’s second presidential debate between her boss and Hillary Clinton.

When MSNBC’s Chris Matthews asked Conway about Trump’s loss of support among congressional Republicans following disclosure of crass comments he made about women in 2005, she said those critics are hypocrites.
(David K. Li. Trump campaign manager accuses turncoat GOPers of sexual harassment. New York Post. October 10, 2016.)

ship-jumping GOP lawmakers

to desert a cause or party especially abruptly
