gala

紅白歌合戦が、"a New Year's Eve music gala watched by millions"と表現されています。

Susan Boyle, the Scottish spinster whose talent show performance catapulted her to global stardom, arrived in Japan on Tuesday to perform on a New Year's Eve music gala watched by millions.

Boyle waved cheerfully to fans as she was escorted through Narita airport east of Tokyo, declining a request by television networks to give an impromptu song on the spot.

She is due to appear on Japan's best-known music extravaganza, public broadcaster NHK's year-end "Kohaku Uta Gassen", which literally means "Red and White Song Battle" and has been running since 1951.

abide by

NSW govt pleads for good NYE behaviour "Grow up and behave yourself" is the new year's resolution the NSW government hopes idiot revellers will abide by on Thursday night. With organisers predicting about 1.5 million people to converge on Sydney Harbour to see in the new year, emergency services are bracing themselves and the state government is pleading for good behaviour. In the CBD alone, more than 1,500 police officers will work to ensure the law is maintained, including the enforcement of several alcohol-free zones.
(The Sydney Morning Herald. December 30, 2009.)

on the dot

At 8:14 a.m. on the dot, the store's neon "open" sign was switched on. The crowd clapped and cheered. Bagpipes played. Chief Farrar, coffee cup in hand, emerged from the store along with Forza Coffee Company Chief Executive Officer Brad Carpenter. They greeted every person in the line, which by then stretched more than a block from the store's front door.

box office

A big year at the box office is ending with a bang, with a broad array of popular films combining for the biggest moviegoing weekend in recent history.

Led by the 3-D epic "Avatar," which was followed closely by "Sherlock Holmes" and "Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel," total estimated theatrical receipts from Friday through Sunday in the U.S. and Canada were $278 million.

That beat the previous record of $261 million for a three-day take -- set in July 2008 when "The Dark Knight" debuted -- even when accounting for ticket price inflation, according to data from Hollywood.com. The Los Angeles-based firm's data go back to about 1985.

(5) ― the Santa myth

Google News

I was probably 8 or 9, that insufferable age when boys think they know everything, and insist on proving it. The big thing I knew that December was that there’s no Santa Claus.

But I was going to validate my knowledge to my parents, the co-conspirators in the Santa myth, in a way that would force them to acknowledge what we all knew, but by tacit agreement did not mention. I was going to stay awake on Christmas Eve, sitting sentinel in the reclining chair next to the Christmas tree.

(4) ― salvation army

It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas this morning: Snow is falling, shoppers are bundled up as they bustle into the grocery store, and Bill Schmidt, 63, is ringing a hand bell non-stop near a bright red kettle as he collects donations for the Salvation Army.

He greets passers-by enthusiastically even if they don't make a donation, and after people drop coins and bills into the kettle, he exclaims, "Thank you very much. Have a beautiful day. God bless you. Merry Christmas."

Schmidt, a lawyer with a busy private practice in a suburb of Washington, D.C., has volunteered here every Saturday during the holiday season for 17 years because, he says, he believes in the work done by the Salvation Army. That work includes feeding the hungry, giving Christmas gifts and food to those in need, providing disaster relief and running rehab centers, food pantries and thrift stores.

(3) ― brick and mortar

On the whole, people are perhaps just being careful this year with what money they still have. They are afraid of being laid off from work or have been laid off from work, they need to conserve cash. There is a strong sense of financial insecurity and that’s bad news for the major retailers... and eventually for a world economy hoping the American consumers go back to their heavy spending ways. Fat chance that’s going to happen anytime soon!

Then again, there are those who also tell me that it is not right to measure consumer sentiment by observing the volume of shoppers in brick and mortar stores. Shoppers, I am told, are spending heavily online, even as they wait for in-store deals. Even as the brick and mortar retailers aren’t too happy with the season, surveys are showing online retailers are seeing an improvement compared with last year.Technology savvy consumers aside, it probably helps that online sales carry no sales tax.

CNBC reports online shoppers have spent nearly $21 billion during the first 43 days of the holiday season, a four-percent increase compared to the same period last year. The week ended Dec. 13 ranked as the biggest online spending week on record, with sales reaching $4.74 billion, according to comScore. The previous high of $4.70 billion was set during the week ended Dec. 16, 2007.
(Can't smell Christmas spirit in malls. Philstar.com. December 23, 2009.)

Despite positive growth in online retail sales, the US National Retail Federation is predicting an overall one percent drop in holiday sales for both online and traditional "bricks and mortar" stores. Overall, it is predicted that consumers will spend $437.6 billion (€305 billion), with a 3 percent decline in the number of purchases using credit cards.

Xmas(あるいは、X'mas)

In the spirit of the season, let’s turn to other lighter topics.

For example, I came across this interesting bit of history concerning the use of the term “Xmas” (an abbreviation of the word “Christmas,” the X substitutes for the word Christ).

As any English dictionary will show, this word is spelled with a capital “X” without an apostrophe after the X. According to the Merriam-Webster New Book of Word Histories, it was first used in the 16th century, back when it was taboo to casually or irreverently use the term “Christ.” Much farther back in time—or about 300 BC—the Jews considered it disrespectful to pronounce the divine proper name, which was “Yaweh,” or “Jehovah” in Hebrew. Thus, X was used as a symbol for Christ. “It derives from the Greek where “chi” (X) is the initial letter of Christos, the Greek form of Christ. The word Xmas is usually pronounced like Christmas….

In Latin manuscripts, Christus was often abbreviated by using the first two letters of Greek Christos, chi (x) and rho (P). When chi and rho are superimposed upon each other a symbol for Christ is formed. This symbol has had wide currency through centuries of the Christian era.”

Christmas music blares from the radio. Christmas lights shine from houses and store windows. The words "Merry Christmas" ring in your ear as you leave the store. You know it's that time of year again. Sure, more places now use the typical greeting "Happy Holidays," as if, for those who don't celebrate Christmas, that makes up for the Christmas decorations and the lack of other holiday decorations.

Celebrating both Hanukkah and Christmas makes this a really fun time of year for me. Last year I had two friends over to celebrate Hanukkah and it was pretty neat to share a holiday with some of my friends who had never experienced it before. And later that year I went over to one of their houses to make Christmas cookies.

(5)=shoulder ― rub shoulders with

rub shoulders with~

rub elbows with~

Johnson had always loved rubbing shoulders with celebrities.

(4)=shoulder ― shoulder to shoulder

“We will continue to stand shoulder to shoulder with the industry to support them through these difficult times. In the new year we will begin working with them on the detail of a longer-term recovery plan and we will increase our efforts to return more decision-making powers to Scotland. Fishing policy made in Brussels is bad for Scotland and we will shortly be setting out our response to proposals for European fisheries policy.”

(3)=shoulder ― put one's shoulder to the wheel

Mr Rudd told the Australian media that while there was absolutely no guarantee of success at getting a global agreement, his aim in the days ahead was to work "as hard as possible to secure the best possible agreement for Australia, in Australia’s national interest".

"As I said, there’s absolutely no guarantee of success. But my job, as Prime Minister of Australia - and Australia as a member of the international community - is to put our shoulder to the wheel, and try and get a good agreement for Australia’s national interest, and for the world.

(2)=shoulder ― straight from the shoulder

"straight from the shoulder"は、ボクシングでパンチを繰り出すその様に由来する表現のようですが、

"What is it?" she whispered, going on sewing. She did not seem to be surprised. "Don't be shocked. Though it would be quite natural for you to be shocked when you hear this. The police chief came to see me just now." I told her straight from the shoulder what the police chief had said. "Keigo really did wrong, but all of us, tempted by some evil spirit, make mistakes now and then, once in our lives. It's like the measles.
(Dazai Osamu. A Tsugaru fireside tale: Lies, by Dazai Osamu. Japan Quarterly. 1998.)

It was felt that most of the Seven Principles were being violated by the Israel lobby and its stooges with impunity, especially the principle of Integrity. So the citizens pushed the matter back to Kelly with this straight-from-the-shoulder message....

(1)=shoulder ― cold shoulder

Sponsors give Woods cold shoulder over sex row

NEW YORK — Tiger Woods, one of the hottest marketing symbols on the planet, is getting the cold shoulder on television where ads featuring the golf star have disappeared since news broke of his philandering.

Nielsen, the New York-based consumer research company, said the formerly ubiquitous Woods had not appeared in a prime-time TV commercial since a November 29 Gillette ad.

That was two days after his image went into freefall with a car accident outside his Florida home and subsequent revelations of a marital crisis over his alleged affairs with a string of women.

Reports that Woods may have been under the influence of alcohol, a sedative and a pain-killer when he crashed threaten to deepen the crisis.

(5) ― adder

a nadder

(4) ― rosemary

(3) ― trialogue

trialogue

(2) ― apron

"a napron"

"an apron"

(1) ― tawdry

tawdry

tawdry

Mindy Lawton, one of the women claiming to have had an affair with Tiger Woods is quoted as saying that she and Woods had sex in the house that Tiger and his family live in in Windermere, Florida.

Seeing movie characters smoke cigarettes increases the risk that Mexican-American teens will try smoking, according to a new study that calls for movies with smoking scenes to receive an R-rating.

It followed 1,328 Mexican-American adolescents, aged 11 to 13, for four years and noted the types of movies they viewed.

At the start of the study, 10 percent of the adolescents had experimented with smoking, compared with 17 percent by the end of the study. The more smoking scenes they had seen in movies, the more likely they were to experiment with smoking.

"Exposure to movie smoking predicted smoking onset even after controlling for several established risk factors, like exposure to friends who smoke," study author Anna Wilkinson, an assistant professor in the epidemiology department at the University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, said in an American Association for Cancer Research news release.

TOKYO, Dec 3 (Reuters) - Shares of Japan Tobacco (2914.T) gained the most in 13 months on Thursday as investors were relieved by a report that the government would hike taxes on cigarettes by less than expected.

The Japanese government plans to raise the tax on tobacco by a few yen per cigarette, Kyodo news agency reported, a much smaller increase than the 10-20 yen anticipated by some market participants.

"It's positive if the tax hike is only 2-3 yen per cigarette, as there have been concerns about a much heftier hike, like pushing up prices to 500 yen a pack or more," said Takeshi Osawa, senior fund manager at Norinchukin Zenkyoren Asset Management.

Feed your brain!

feed your brain

From study groups to practice tests, everyone has a method to prepare for exams. And with just a few short weeks between mid-terms and finals, efficiency is key. While nothing replaces proper revision, other factors influence how well your brain performs and retains information. The Guide to Colleges and Universities has compiled tips and tricks to help you work with your brain, not against it:

Move toward the (natural) light.

Feed your brain. Despite all the talk of "brain foods," no single food will make you smarter, says Doug Cook, a registered dietician and nutritionist at St. Michael's Hospital, and co-author with Carol Ann Rinzler of Nutrition for Canadians for Dummies (2008).

Good eating habits fuel the brain and boost concentration, a great help when you're studying or taking exams, he says.

"Eating regularly will help learning," the dietician says. "Trying to study when hungry is not only distracting, but it literally starves the brain," he adds, a warning to dieters or those with erratic eating patterns.

Fuel your brain with carbohydrates, preferably produce and whole grains, and lean protein, including chicken, fish and beans. Before a test, eat a light meal to keep your energy up. Anything too heavy might make you feel sluggish, Cook says.

Caffeine is fine in small doses, as is a celebratory drink, "but no one needs to be told how being a bit hung over will negatively affects one's scholastic aspirations."

debar

The FDA would gain authority to debar device clinical trial researchers convicted of felonies under a bill introduced in the House. The Strengthening of FDA Integrity Act, H.R. 3932, was introduced by Rep. Joe Barton (R-Texas) and has seven co-sponsors. The bill also would require the FDA to send annual debarment reports to Congress and would reduce the time it has to debar a researcher from five years to one.
(FDA News. November 30, 2009.)

behind bars

Pulp Fiction co-screenwriter Roger Avary has been sent back to a secure jail after reportedly giving updates on his sentence on Twitter.

Avary, who was jailed for a year for killing a friend while drunk driving, had been on a furlough programme, allowing him to work outside jail.

But this has now been rescinded and he has been sent back to jail.

It was revealed he was not serving jail time after a blogger asked how he could send internet updates from behind bars.

The Los Angeles Times then found out he was on the work programme and that he had not actually spent a night in a conventional jail since he was sentenced in September.

The tweets purportedly written by Avary gave the impression of a grim life on the inside, sharing a cell with a "gangbanger", and using his inmate number 34.

Bring your own brown bag lunch..."

Near the Skidmore Fountain, Stephanie Jones, 9, in the blue coat, passes out brown bag dinners to the homeless, Wednesday, Nov. 25, 2009 while her father, Kwik Jones, behind his daughter wearing a black hat, carries a box filled with the bagged dinners. The passing out of the brown bag dinners is a tradition the two started five years ago and they, with the help of some of their friends, passed out 175 bags this year.
(Father and Daughter Hand Out Thanksgiving Dinners. The Oregonian. November 26, 2009.)

brown bagger(手弁当派)
brown bagging(レストランを利用せず、食事を自前で準備する事)

― Black Friday

Apple has confirmed that UK shoppers will enjoy discounted products across its whole range on Friday.

The sale coincides with 'Black Friday' in the United States, the day after Thanksgiving when stores traditionally slash prices and the Christmas shopping rush begins.
Apple customers received an email wishing them "Happy Friday". The message promised a special "one day shopping event" both in-store and online, and the illustration showed a pile of Apple products, including Mac laptops and computers, iPods, keyboards and an Apple TV, wrapped in a ribbon and bow.
(Apple's 'Black Friday' sale available in UK. Telegraph.co.uk. November 24, 2009.)

― teflon

Hatoyama: The Teflon PM

Japanese Prime Minister Yukio Hatoyama, it seems, can do no wrong.

For weeks, he has been waffling over the issue of where to relocate the US Futenma air base, insisting he needs time to ponder the deal the previous Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) administration reached with Washington to move the base to another location in Okinawa.

The Japanese media predictably sniped at him, accusing him of ruining US-Japan ties. The public, however, thought differently.

A survey conducted by the Asahi Shimbun daily last weekend found that 54per cent of the public agreed with Hatoyama that the Futenma deal should be renegotiated.

When quizzed recently about some dubious accounting in his political funds, Hatoyama gave the lame excuse that his personal financial management was sloppy “because I was born into a well-off family”.

He was booed by some netizens. But the media surprisingly let that one go, coming as it did just before an avalanche of news about US President Barack Obama's visit to this region.

Former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe remarked, perhaps in wonderment: “If it had been Mr Aso who had said that, it would have been instant (political) death.”
(The Malaysian Insider. November 23, 2009.)

A trademark used for a waxy, opaque material, polytetrafluoroethylene, employed as a coating on cooking utensils and in industrial applications to prevent sticking.
(American Heritage Dictionary of English Language. Third Edition.)

This trademark often occurs in figurative contexts in print:
(ibid.)

whistle stop

Government Transport Minister Lord Adonis visited Preston Station as part of a whistle stop tour of the 10 stations in need of an urgent upgrade.

After arriving on the 15:17 service from Manchester Victoria yesterday he was shown around the station, including the subway used to access different platforms.

He said: "Preston is a station with wonderful historic features in it.
(Minister on whistle-stop tour of city's rail station. Lancashire Evening Post. November 18, 2009.)

whistle-blower

Office Depot whistle-blower getting paid by competitors

Fort Myers resident and Office Depot whistle-blower David Sherwin is receiving money from competitors of his former company.

Sherwin said he was fired from his job as a senior Office Depot account manager after alleging the company was overcharging thousands of government agencies and nonprofit organizations across the country by hundreds of millions of dollars.

After being fired, Sherwin began a campaign of e-mails, faxes and telephone calls to hundreds of government agencies. Since his campaign began, four federal agencies, six state attorneys general and several state and local government auditors have launched investigations of the company’s government contracting practices.

Office Depot made no statements for this story and declined a request for an interview. However, in a late-October statement, the company called Sherwin’s motives into question.

“His negative campaign against Office Depot – which is often repeated by our competitors, who we believe are funding his efforts – is littered with misrepresentations, omissions and absurdities,” an e-mailed statement said.

For decades, North Korea has chosen a path of confrontation and provocation, including the pursuit of nuclear weapons. It should be clear where this path leads. We have tightened sanctions on Pyongyang. We have passed the most sweeping U.N. Security Council resolution to date to restrict their weapons of mass destruction activities. We will not be cowed by threats, and we will continue to send a clear message through our actions, and not just our words: North Korea's refusal to meet its international obligations will lead only to less security -- not more.

Now that we are on the brink of economic recovery, we must also ensure that it can be sustained. We simply cannot return to the same cycles of boom and bust that led to a global recession. We can't follow the same policies that led to such imbalanced growth.

stake

I am a American President who was born in Hawaii and lived in Indonesia as a boy. My sister Maya was born in Jakarta, and later married a Chinese-Canadian. My mother spent nearly a decade working in the villages of Southeast Asia...

So the Pacific Rim has helped shape my view of the world.

And through all these changes, the fortunes of America and the Asia Pacific have become more closely linked than ever before.

So I want everyone to know, and I want everybody in America to know, that we have a stake in the future of this region, because what happens here has a direct effect on our lives at home. This is where we engage in much of our commerce and buy many of our goods. And this is where we can export more of our own products and create wider world, and where extremists who defile a great religion plan attacks on both our continents.

Horn of Africa

(the) Horn of Africa

In the half-century since, that alliance has endured as a foundation for our security and prosperity. It has helped us become the world's two largest economies, with Japan emerging as America's second-largest trading partner outside of North America. It has evolved as Japan has played a larger role on the world stage, and made important contributions to stability around the world -- from reconstruction in Iraq, to combating piracy off the Horn of Africa, to assistance for the people of Afghanistan and Pakistan -- most recently through its remarkable leadership in providing additional commitments to international development efforts there.

It is wonderful to be back in Japan. Some of you may be aware that when I was a young boy, my mother brought me to Kamakura, where I looked up at that centuries-old symbol of peach and tranquility -- the great bronze Amida Buddha. And as a chile, I was more focused on the matcha ice cream.

And I want to thank Prime Minister Hatoyama for sharing some of those memories with more ice cream last night at dinner. Thank you very much.

scuffle

Mike Tyson found himself in the back of a police car after getting into a scuffle with a photographer at Los Angeles International Airport, according to TMZ. Sources claim they saw blood on the floor near the United Airlines ticket counter where the scuffle took place. Police tell the site that both Tyson and the photographer performed citizen’s arrests on each other. A rep for the former heavyweight champion says he was just trying to protect his 10-month-old daughter from an overly aggressive paparazzo. Tyson was reportedly released on $20,000 US bail after being booked.
(Metro News Canada. November 12, 2009.)

― strike a nerve

"get on my nerves"(気に障る、癪に障る)、
"have the nerve to do"(ずうずうしくも~する)

U.S. health regulators, eyeing whether new rules are needed for Internet-delivered information on drugs and medical devices, will hear from companies and consumer groups at a two-day meeting that starts Thursday.

The Food and Drug Administration is gathering opinions on whether drug advertising on the Internet needs special oversight.

The Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America industry group has already said it will urge the FDA to adopt a safety logo on Web content that would link to FDA-approved information about a drug or device. [ID:nN09273270]

The topic has struck a nerve. About 900 guests tried to register for the event, to be held in a meeting room in Washington D.C. that only fits 350 people.
(U.S. FDA seeks input on possible Internet rules. Reuters. November 12, 2009.)

To find out what frequent business travelers really think about food and fitness on the road, USA TODAY sent two-page questionnaires to more than 2,000 readers who responded to a USA TODAY query for Road Warriors. All fly more than 100,000 miles a year or stay in hotels more than 100 nights a year. We struck a nerve. We received more than 1,500 responses by mail and fax, although only 1,136 arrived in time to be counted.
(USA Today. 1992.)

fall into the wrong hands

fall into the enemy's handsという表現を聞いたことがあるかも知れません。”

Free Wi-Fi while you're waiting for your flight? Sounds like a great way to save money, and kudos to Google for offering it at many U.S. airports during the holidays. Unfortunately, Google's generosity may also lure identity thieves and nefarious hackers to the nation's terminals to prey on clueless travelers.

Public hotspots, which by nature are open and unencrypted, are notoriously insecure. Information you transmit via laptop, smartphone, or gaming device may very well fall into the wrong hands. There are ways to stay safe, however. We asked Edgar Figueroa, executive director of industry trade group the Wi-Fi Alliance, for some hotspot safety tips.

A man resembling Tatsuya Ichihashi recently had plastic surgery in Japan, according to news reports. Mr Ichihashi escaped as police arrived at his Tokyo...
(BBC News. November 6, 2009.)

― in limbo

下記の引用は今日のGoogle News(オーストラリア版)からです。

Students left in limbo as colleges close

Nearly 3,000 students have been thrown out of their courses after the closure of another four private colleges in Sydney and Melbourne. It's claimed one of the Melbourne colleges recently passed a government audit.

The Brumby Government has promised to place the Year 12 students affected by the closures in government secondary schools and offer training students places in similar courses with other colleges as soon as possible.

Since July nine private colleges have closed in Victoria and more are expected to close in the months ahead. Alison Caldwell reports.

spokesman

何故、"spoke(s)"なのか?

Qantas pilots forgot to lower wheels

QANTAS has stood down two pilots after a Boeing 767 landing in Sydney came within 700ft of the ground before the flight crew realised they had not lowered the plane's undercarriage.

The airline and the Australian Transport Safety Bureau have launched investigations into the October 26 incident. The pilots are due to be interviewed by authorities on Friday.

記事では、その後、このようなアクシデントは非常にまれであり、カンタス航空は重大に受け止めている(...Qantas said yesterday that a crew failing to lower the undercarriage was extremely rare and it was taking the incident seriously...)、とあります。

"The incident was reported to the ATSB and the pilots were stood down. We are supporting the ATSB's investigation and our own investigations will determine what further action might be warranted."

puny body
puny effort
puny existence

For instance, the international exchange of money -- a miracle of information technologies -- is remarkably efficient, daily moving more than a trillion dollars' worth of money among countries. Yet, no one is in charge of the system that makes it happen. Recently, the puny efforts of governments to control monetary swings by buying and selling currencies have only demonstrated governments' incapacity to control them. If civilization is what's universal, culture is the substance and symbols of the community.

SSE shares, which fluctuated between $ 6 and $ 10 for most of last year, closed Friday at $ 10. EchoStar closed at $ 23.38.
(Washington Post. 1996.)

New York stocks fluctuated violently Monday as the Dow shed early gains and ended down on a stronger dollar.

hit the ceiling

Even before this year's surge in oil prices, there were gloomy industry predictions that world oil output would soon hit a ceiling. U.S. benchmark crude hit a record high on Thursday, propelled by Libyan threats of possible supply cuts, closing at $139.64 a barrel, up more than threefold since 2004.
(Associated Press. 2008.)

There is growing conviction in solid waste circles that conventional recycling has gone about as far as it's likely to go without fundamental, society-wide changes. "Communities like Seattle and Minneapolis have expended a lot of resources and hit a ceiling at around the 60 percent recycling rate," says Sheehan. "Going beyond that is very difficult, and the primary barriers are the lack of manufacturer responsibility and the non-level playing field that subsidizes wasting."

National Weather Service specialist Stuart Seto says temperatures will hover in the mid-60s to low 70s Tuesday and dip slightly on Wednesday.
(San Jose Mercury News. October 26, 2009.)

Crude oil on the New York Mercantile Exchange has risen to hover around US$80/barrel, its highest level in a year.
(A news article from plastemart.com. October 25, 2009.)

However, the energy market seems evermore divorced from supply/demand fundamentals. Take the current poor economic climate; as crude oil prices hover between US $60 to $70 per barrel, analysts question the higher price rationale despite favorable supply to demand ratio with record high inventories.

American Heritage

A level of excellence

Mozilla tests the water with Raindrop email filter

Mozilla has asked developers to build applications for a new open-source email management project called Raindrop.

Raindrop 0.1 is still very much in its infancy, but will allow users to filter their inbox so that the most pressing emails are brought to immediate attention and those from mailing lists are sidelined.
(PC Authority. October 26, 2009.)

A show has to have an arc, a beginning, middle and end, " she explained over lunch at the Clift Hotel. " Some songs work at the start that don't work at the end. I try for a meeting quality, which is what the first few moments are like with an audience. You can't start with an intense song like' The Thrill Is Gone' or' You've Changed.' The audience gets resistant. Poignant or plaintive will work in the beginning, but not pain. " To test the water, she may sing a light or sardonic tune near the top.
(San Francisco Chronicle. 1990.)

"expose the myth of..."

"expose the myth"

Researchers expose the myth of 'disappearing' puppy fat

The concept of childhood "puppy fat" that disappears in teenage years is a myth, researchers say. Children who are overweight or obese at 11 remain so through adolescence and probably into adulthood, a study in the British Medical Journal found.

Experts said obesity was established earlier than previously thought and dismissing the problem as puppy fat could have serious health implications later. More than a quarter of children in the UK are overweight or obese and the proportion has trebled in the past 20 years.
(The Independent. May 5, 2006.)

Another Sydney boy falls through window

Less than a week after a Sydney toddler was killed falling through an open window, another boy has been seriously injured in a similar accident.

The six-year-old boy was playing with his younger sister in an upstairs bedroom at his family's Como home, in Sydney's south, last night.

Police say he fell four metres through an open window with a flyscreen to the concrete driveway below.
(ABC News. October 23, 2009.)

A window or door insertion of framed wire or plastic mesh used to keep out insects and permit airflow
(American Heritage Dictionary. Third Edition.)

machine -> ミシン

Clostridium botulinum

Botulism

Baby food recalled, may be tainted with botulism

WASHINGTON — Plum Organics of Emeryville, Calif., is recalling some of its apple and carrot portable pouch baby food because of concerns over possible botulism contamination.

― texting

ガイジン男B: (同じく男性を認めて)Yeah, but he is just texting...

Q. Do cell phones really cause brain cancer? Do you think the Philippines will soon have an epidemic of brain cancer because Filipinos use cell phones very extensively?

As regards your second question, even if RF energy from cell phones can cause brain cancer, it is unlikely for this disease to reach epidemic proportion in the Philippines. We Filipinos hardly use our cell phones to make voice calls.

Sheriff: Balloon boy hoax may have conspirators Investigators say they want to question an associate of Richard Heene after e-mails surfaced showing the two had discussed a balloon hoax months ago as part of a public relations campaign for a reality TV show.

The alleged stunt temporarily shut down Denver International Airport, and the National Guard provided two helicopters in an attempt to rescue 6-year-old Falcon Heene, who was believed to be inside the flying-saucer shaped homemade balloon that hurtled more than 50 miles across two counties. The drama played out on live television to millions of viewers worldwide. When the balloon landed without the boy, officials thought he had fallen out and began the grim search for his body.
(The Associated Press. October 19, 2009.)

朝飯前 ― a piece of cake

as easy as pie
as simple as ABC

So this morning I found myself lying on the cold tarp that serves as a floor while Christian Macedonia of Georgetown runs the cold ultrasound probe over my right carotids. The good news is that my blood flow was surprisingly normal. The bad news is the presence of a small and as yet insignificant plaque. I got a lecture that the plaque will go away in a couple of years as long as I don't resume smoking. Refraining from smoking has been a piece of cake here in Nepal. But I know when I get home and have a big steak and a glass of red wine, a cigarette is going to sound pretty good.

crash
crush
clash

North Korea warns of naval clash
(BBC News. October 15, 2009.)

North Korea's navy has accused South Korea of sending warships across their maritime border to stir tensions.
The communist state's navy said that on Monday alone, ships had crossed the boundary 10 times.

An official with the South's Joint Chiefs of Staff said the North's charge is groundless as Seoul does not acknowledge the Pyongyang-set border.
The maritime border has since been disputed by the two Koreas, and the West Sea was the site of deadly naval skirmishes in 1999 and 2002.

"The reckless military provocations... have created such a serious situation that a naval clash may break out," the North Korean military said in a statement on Thursday.

こちらも、頻繁にcrash(クラッシュ)するようなパソコンなら、crush(つぶしてスクラップにでもする)する("a" → "u")のがよいのでは??

apple polishing

There were wonderful wild flowers still plush and in bloom along the sides and I was wondering if it wouldn't be nice for us to pluck some for Miss Walker. I asked Emily, but she barely turned around to reply. "Don't start apple polishing the first day, Lillian." Then she turned and added, "And don't do anything to embarrass me." "I'm not apple polishing," I cried, but Emily just said, "Humph," and walked on, her long strides getting longer and faster so that I practically had to run to keep up.

American Heritage

To make an agreement in which a defendant pleads guilty to a lesser charge and the prosecutor in return drops more serious charges.

Oracle plays up promise of Sun take-over

SAN FRANCISCO — Oracle chief executive Larry Ellison opened fire on US technology veteran IBM and expressed optimism about the pending 7.4-billion-dollar-deal to buy Sun Microsystems.

While kicking off an Oracle Open World conference in downtown San Francisco, Ellison vowed to merge his company's business software prowess with Sun's hardware innovations in a synergy powerful enough to take on IBM.

"We're in it to win it," Ellison said as he joined Sun founder and chief executive Scott McNealy on stage to open a week-long gathering of fans of Oracle's software for businesses.

After 1989, many Chinese intellectuals began rejecting what they saw as an excessive love in the 1980s for all things Western, from institutions to ideas to pop culture. They argued for "Chinese solutions to Chinese problems," leading a revival of interest in traditional Chinese culture and values. Playing up contradictions and problems in Western societies, some presented written and visual images of the decline of the nuclear family, gambling, pornography, drugs, illiteracy, and rampant crime. Following official propaganda, they attacked the China policies of Western governments and had great influence on the ordinary people.

Sources close to the Tiwari family told TOI that he also could have been a victim of the treatment by a quack doctor. Tiwari had developed complications immediately after this quack (people know him as `Raghorte compounder') from Warthi gave him an injection when he complained of cold and fever.

Melor affects the sourth of Japan

The 18th typhoon of the Northwest Pacific season is affecting southern parts of Japan with heavy rain and strong winds.

Melor is expected to make landfall south of Kyoto later on Wednesday, as a category one storm with sustained winds around 100mph (155km/h).
(BBC Weather. October 7, 2009.)

― cater

In a recent survey by the marketing company Frank About Women of nearly 1,600 women ages 35 to 74, 48% said many retailers seem to cater to younger shoppers and ignore others. But the women's replies to two other questions show why any store's marketing approach may seem self-contradictory: 40% of women said they had no interest in clothes that make them look younger.

Peeping Tom

犯行声明 ― claim of responsibility

Suicide bomber kills 5 at UN office in Pakistan

ISLAMABAD — A suicide bomber disguised as a security officer struck the lobby of the U.N. food agency's Pakistan headquarters Monday, killing five people a day after the new leader of the Pakistani Taliban vowed fresh assaults, authorities and witnesses said.

The blast raises questions as to how the bomber managed to evade tight security at the heavily fortified World Food Program compound in the capital, Islamabad. It could also hamper the work of WFP and other aid agencies assisting Pakistanis displaced by army offensives against al-Qaida and the Taliban in their strongholds close to the Afghan border.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the bombing. Militants have carried out scores of suicide attacks in Pakistan over the last 2 1/2 years, several of them targeting foreigners and their interests. Under U.S. pressure, Pakistani security forces have recently had some success combatting the extremists.

Argus

American Heritage Dictionary

A giant with 100 eyes

であり、

who was made guardian of Io and was later slain by Hermes

An alert or watchful person; a guardian

Argus

Typhon
Greek Mythology. A monster with one hundred heads, thrown by Zeus into Tartarus.
(American Heritage Dictionary)

― centenarian

Japanese centenarians to receive smaller sake chalice as costs rise

It is Japan’s equivalent of the telegram from the Queen, a custom intended to honour the very oldest fraction of society. Every year those who are turning 100 receive a certificate from the Prime Minister and a silver sake chalice. But now the practice is in crisis because of a simple but insurmountable problem — the overwhelming number of Japanese centenarians is making the presents too costly.

dkm-tom

kmtom

― hundred

ten
decimal
dime
dozen

know the ropes (コツを知っている、コツが分かっている)

His freshman year had been squeezed by his efforts not to fail and fall back into the farmland and his disconsolate family. Returning to Cambridge as a sophomore, Owen found the squeeze slightly lessened; he was beginning to know the ropes. In September, he ventured across the river to see the Braves play the Phillies; he rooted for the Phillies but kept it to himself, in the shirtsleeved crowd whose skimpiness foretold the move of the franchise to Milwaukee within a year.
(John Updike. Elsie By Starlight. New Yorker. 2004.)

learn the ropes (コツを会得する)

When you are low-income, you have to learn how to negotiate the middle-class world. We had to learn the ropes and be empowered to speak up for what we needed.
(Denver Post. 2007.)

show the ropes
teach someone the ropes

He received thanks but no pecuniary compensation for his services.
(American Heritage Dictionary)

For most of European history, meat has been a mark of power and privilege and a rare delicacy for the peasantry. The origins of "pecuniary" in pecus, the Latin word for herd, and of "capital" in capita, Latin for head (of cattle), are a reminder that meat was long a measure of wealth. Monks renounced flesh, to demonstrate their indifference to worldly advantage, and it was not until the twentieth century, when Colonel Sanders catered to the civilian infantry and even soup kitchens put a chicken in the pot, that the implications of flesh for class were reversed.
(Steven G. Kellman. Fish, Flesh, and Foul. American Scholar. 2000.)

- Buy food in season. It's typically fresher, tastier and cheaper.

- Recycle. Save glass jars to use as storage containers. Clear jars let you see what's in them, so you're more likely to use leftovers before they become unrecognizable furred lifeforms.

- Don't give up entertaining, but pool resources with friends. If inviting guests to bring dishes to a potluck at your home makes you feel too much like an impecunious college student, organize a barbecue or picnic at a park (no need to clean house!) or arrange a progressive dinner with neighbors.

Mantis is from the Greek word mantis, meaning "prophet, seer." The Greeks, who made the connection between the upraised front legs of a mantis waiting for its prey and the hands of a prophet in prayer, used the name mantis to mean "the praying mantis."
(American Heritage Dictionary of English Language.)

It's an ill wind that blows nobody good.

It's an ill wind that blows no good, but the current chill afflicting biotech stocks has blessed Chiron Corp. Since the beginning of the year, biotech stock indexes have retreated 16 percent, but Emeryville's Chiron is ahead 1 percent. legion

Mr. Motion continued: "On the face of it, his poems are about animals, nature and wildlife, but careful reading allows us to see them as a metaphorical or allegorical way of reconciling past and present." The poems in "Birthday Letters," Mr. Hughes's often heartbreaking account of his relationship with Plath, were written much more simplistically, as straightforward narratives that behave like prose. When the book was published, the poet's legion of friends, who knew him as a loyal and generous man who was almost bigger than life, with his imposing physical presence, his strong, eagle-like face, his enormous, bushy eyebrows and his thatch of thick unruly hair, said that he had finally succeeded in exorcising the ghosts of the past.

"He said he couldn't do that because good plumbers are too scarce -- he didn't want to risk turning them off. I've talked to people who don't test because they're afraid they'll lose half their work force." Not that Warner didn't face the same problem. When his drug testing began in earnest, half of his new hires failed. At one company location in 1986, 14 new plumbers in a row flunked the drug test. But no matter how shorthanded Warner was, he never lowered his standards or winked at a problem. In 1987, in a tight labor market, he fired several veteran plumbers, even when he lacked replacements. "You can't make exceptions, " he says. " Consistency is key."

steal one's thunder

spoil sb's attempt to impress by anticipatiting him, detracting from what he is saying, doing, etc.

"go against the grain"というフレーズがありますが、これは

To be honest, I am frustrated by aspects of the marketing, only because I think it limits our audience more than it needs to. I definitely feel the movie was made by women, for women, with boys in mind, of course, because we knew it would be an appealing movie for a lot of kids. I’m definitely frustrated by the “boy-centric” angle that a lot of the marketing seems to have. It’s going against the grain of what the film is trying to accomplish.

sinecure

The concern seems to be that if professors are forced to teach, the school will no longer attract the most prestigious professors. If I remember what I was taught by full professors at CU some years ago, the purpose of tenure is to allow teachers to teach freely, without worrying about current intellectual fads and politically correct views. If this is true, tenure isn't needed by those who don't teach but only do research. If tenure is just a sinecure, to be enjoyed while one enjoys the intellectual pleasures of research, it is being misused. Tenure should be taken away from these positions, and the people (formerly professors) who do the research should be free to compete for funds and employment with the researchers in other industries.
