turn on

What turns a woman on is something most men often find complicated.

Luckily, science has done a little of the hard work for you — delving into the intricate female mind to discover what really gets her going.

While most men (we hope) know that listening to her, treating her with respect and putting in the effort to spend time with her goes a long way, there are a few other traits that put you ahead in the race for her affection.

So before you head out on your next big date, take a look at what turns a woman on, according to science.
(Andrea Dawney. If you want to turn a lady on, just frown at her and sweat profusely. New York Post. February 27, 2017.)

turn on

"turn a lady on"にしろ、"turn a woman on"にしろ同じことですが、Oxford Dictionary of Euphemismによると、

to excite

Through any taboo agent or illegal agent. Of sex.

An older beard or stubble, specifically 10-day-old stubble, is more of a turn-on to women.
(ibid.)

bread-and-butter

SAP Launches Cloudier Version of its Bread-and-Butter Software

Business software giant SAP on Thursday introduced a cloudier version of its technology as it continues to push into the modern world of public cloud computing.

The new product, unveiled at an event in New York, promises to let business customers perform the same accounting, financial, and manufacturing management tasks as before, but in a more modern and efficient manner.
(Barb Darrow. SAP Launches Cloudier Version of its Bread-and-Butter Software. Fortune. February 9, 2017.)

The candidates have debated bread-and-butter issues like education, safety and transportation.
(Washington Post, 2015)

Americans, cynical yet desperate for leadership, were unshakably gloomy about their job security, their access to health care and their children's chances for prosperity in a global economy. They had grown weary of 12 years of Republican rule, symbolized by a president who seemed insensitive to their bread-and-butter concerns.
(Newsweek, 1993)

head-scratcher

This shooting was a real head-scratcher.

An Oregon woman emerged unscathed when a bullet fired through her home bounced off her head, the Bend Bulletin reported.

The Redmond woman was watching TV Monday evening when the stray 9 mm slug blasted through at least one exterior wall of her neighbor’s home, passed through a fence and then entered her home.

It flew through a picture frame and “bounced” off her noggin about 9:45 p.m., Redmond police said.

“She had a knot on her head. You could feel it, but it didn’t bleed or puncture anything,” police Lt. Curtis Chambers said in describing her superficial wound.

“It was like having a small rock thrown at you,” he said.
(Yoron Steinbuch. Lucky woman uninjured when stray bullet bounces off her head. New York Post. February 23, 2017.)

This shooting was a real head-scratcher.

Mayday

DALLAS — A pilot repeatedly yelled out “Mayday” but did not say what the emergency was before his light plane crashed into the roof of an Australian shopping mall, killing himself and four American tourists, an accident investigator said Wednesday.

Police blamed “catastrophic engine failure” when a twin-engine Beechcraft B200 Super King Air crashed into the Direct Factory Outlet mall in the Melbourne suburb of Essendon on Tuesday moments after takeoff from a nearby runway.
(Pilot radioed in ‘Mayday’ call before Australian plane crash. The Washington Post. February 21, 2017.)

an international radio-telephone signal word used as a distress call
(Merriam-Webster Dictionary)

step up to the mark

Every child knows when you are in trouble, you call the cops.

But it is fair to say, no police officer expects that trouble to be related to the complexities of a 10-year-old's maths homework.

Yet when faced with just such an issue, one brave officer in Marion, Ohio, stepped up to the mark.

Lena Draper decided to use Facebook to get in touch with her local police force, sending them an appeal for help at the weekend.
(Ohio policeman helps girl, 10, with maths homework. BBC News. February 22, 2017.)

step up to the mark

上記の引用は否定文ではないのですが、"step up to the mark"は"up to the mark"とは別の表現と考えられます。

"step up to the mark"は期待に応えるといった意味合いだろうと想像ができます。

ネット検索で"step up to the mark"を検索すると、類似の表現に、

step up to the plate

step up to the plate"とは、バッターが打撃準備に入ることを指しており、つまりは役割を果たすために位置につく、という意味であり、役目を果たそうとする動きを意味しています。

"step up to the mark"と"step up to the plate"が同じ意味合いかという疑問は少し残るのですが、"the mark"にもスタートラインの意味があることから、恐らく意味としては近いものがあると考察した次第です。

愛想をつかす ― give up on

Uber CEO Travis Kalanick on Sunday said the company will open an “urgent investigation” after a former engineer wrote a lengthy blog post describing systemic sexual harassment at the San Francisco ride-hailing service, which she called "an organization in complete, unrelenting chaos."

In a posting on Twitter, the engineer, Susan Fowler, recounts being openly propositioned for sex by her manager during her first day on his team.
(Greg Toppo. UBER CEO calls for investigation of sexual harassment claims. USA Today. February 19, 2017.)

"We all gave up on Uber (Human Resources) and our managers after that," she writes.
(ibid.)

once bitten, twice shy

After the Galaxy Note 7 fiasco in 2016, Samsung seems to be once bitten, twice shy when it comes to batteries of its devices. The company is reportedly ditching its own subsidiary, Samsung SDI, instead sourcing the batteries for its upcoming smartphones from multiple suppliers.
(Rishabh Jain. Samsung Galaxy S8 Batteries: LG, Sony, Murata Among Rumored Suppliers, Replacing Samsung SDI. International Business Times. February 19, 2017.)

no-frills

American Airlines today said it will start selling no-frills tickets in February.

The long-awaited Basic Economy fares, which follow similar moves by Delta and United and are designed to better compete with bargain fares at Spirit and Frontier, will be the airline's cheapest fares but will come with significant restrictions.

The biggest: no carry-on bags in the overhead bin. Any carry-on must fit underneath the seat.
(Dawn Gilbertson. American's no-frill fares ban overhead bin use. AZ Central. January 18, 2017.)

まさに、LCC(Low-Cost Carrier)の精神と同じです。

bolt-on

bolt-on charges

Do You Need Built-in or Bolt-on Security for Office 365?

Before or after migrating to Microsoft Office 365, you are faced with third-party options for migration, performance monitoring, security, archiving, mobile management and more. The question that begs to be asked: Do you want to go with the built-in tools provided by Microsoft or do you want to buy best-of-breed tools from third- party vendors?
(Redmond Magazine. January 24, 2017.)

Nokia chief financial officer Kristian Pullola tells a conference call: "We like this (Comptel) type of bolt-on deals and we will be looking at them also going forward."
(BRIEF-Nokia looks for further bolt-on deals - CFO. Reuters. February 9, 2017.)

Oxford Dictionary

(of an extra part of a machine) able to be fastened on with a bolt or catch

― bummer

Let's say you break your watch or some other item or device. You check your warranty, and bummer: it's expired. If you're planning to buy a replacement, try asking the company for a discount.
(Kristin Wong. Ask For A Discount On A New Item If You Break Something Out Of Warranty. Lifehacker Australia. February 4, 2017.)

That concert was a real bummer.

broadside

Microsoft is clear to sue the US government for gagging the company from telling users when their data has been accessed by the State. The lawsuit, filed last April, jumped another legal hurdle this week – thanks to the Washington judge who also battered President Trump's executive order on travel.

It's Microsoft's fourth legal broadsideagainst the US government on data protection rights for users of cloud services. Microsoft argues that the laws purportedly protecting customers privacy are now outdated and ineffective, and need to be modernised if the public is to trust the cloud. The best known of these outside the US is the "Dublin Warrant" or "Irish Warrant" case, which challenges the right of governments to access data stored on servers outside the USA.
(Andrew Orlowski. Judge green lights Microsoft vs Uncle Sam gag order case. The Register. February 10, 2017.)

It's Microsoft's fourth legal broadside against the US government on data protection rights

have hand in

Hundreds of pilot whales managed to return to the water after being stranded on a New Zealand beach.

About 416 whales were stranded Friday; many got free but were then restranded. Hundreds of whales died. It was the third largest mass stranding in New Zealand history.

But how do whales and dolphins — who are naturally expert navigators — end up getting beached?

Individual animals will strand themselves for simple reasons, including illness, injury and old age.

Humans might have a hand in some whale strandings. Loud sonar can cause them to flee and beach themselves.
(Ethan Weston. Why Do Whales Beach Themselves? Scientists Have A Few Theories. Newsy. February 12, 2017.)

Driver dies after semi blown off Chesapeake Bay Bridge

CAPE CHARLES, Va. — A tractor-trailer blew off the side of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel on Thursday, killing the driver before he could be transported to a hospital, officials said.

The accident occurred shortly before 12:30 p.m. ET around milepost 15 in the southbound lane, according to Thomas R. Anderson, deputy director of finance and operation for the Chesapeake Bay Bridge and Tunnel District.

A U.S. Navy helicopter that was flying by spotted the driver, Joseph Chen, 45, of Greenville, N.C., on top of the vehicle's cab and hoisted him aboard about 5 minutes later, according to Mike Maus, spokesman for Naval Air Force Atlantic. Chen died as the helicopter was flying him to a hospital.
(USA Today. February 9, 2017.)

Driver dies after (being) blown off...bridge

sycophant

How did fig revealers become slanderers? One theory has to do with the taxes Greek farmers were required to pay on the figs they brought to market. Apparently, the farmers would sometimes try to avoid making the payments, but squealers—fig revealers—would fink on them, and they would be forced to pay.
(Merriam-Webster Dictionary)

Another possible source is a sense of the word fig meaning "a gesture or sign of contempt" (as thrusting a thumb between two fingers).
(ibid.)

Barack Obama seems to be living it up these days. Photos and videos emerged last week of the former president taking a stroll alongside Michelle Obama in the British Virgin Islands wearing what can only be described as a full-vacation mode outfit: shorts, polo shirt, flip flops and a backward hat.

Turns out that was just the beginning of Obama’s post-presidency adventures. On Tuesday, Virgin Group founder and Obama’s billionaire vacation buddy Richard Branson posted a video of a friendly wager between the two: Branson, who is an avid kitesurfer, wanted to see if Obama could stay on a kiteboard longer than he could on a foilboard.
(Kelyn Soong. Obama makes rest of us look bad with his effortless kitesurfing. The Washington Post. February 7, 2017.)

a needle in a haystack

Finding Karina Vetrano’s killer was like searching for “a needle in a haystack,” an NYPD official said a day after a Brooklyn man was charged in the brutal murder of the beautiful Queens jogger.

“This case was very similar to a needle in a haystack because this individual had no prior arrests,” said Chief of Detectives Bob Boyce on Monday, referring to accused killer Chanel Lewis, 20.

During the six-month investigation into the high-profile Aug. 2 killing, investigators poured over 250 leads and 600 samples of DNA until the case finally saw a break last week, Boyce said.

Following up on a 911 call from the spring — and pushed by NYPD Lt. John Russo, whose relatives live near where Vetrano resided with her family — police were able to track down Lewis, who gave a swab of DNA to investigators.

Lewis’s DNA was linked to genetic material found under Vetrano’s fingernails, on her back and on her backpack, authorities have said. He later confessed to strangling the runner, sources said.
(Jogger suspect's clean record made finding him even harder. New York Post. February 6, 2017.)

"look for a needle in a haystack"は成句で、とても無理なことの喩えです。

Australian National University researchers are calling for an end to the long hours worked by Australians, in the name of health and wellbeing.

They examined the working lives of 7890 adults and concluded that a culture of working overtime — with 40 per cent of Australians working more than 40 hours a week — was having a negative impact.

“Our findings showed that on average, the maximum number of hours that can be worked before mental health starts to suffer is 39 hours,” the study’s authors wrote.

“Long work hours erode a person’s mental and physical health, because it leaves less time to eat well and look after themselves properly ... Australian businesses need to adhere to a healthy work hour limit for the mental health of workers.”
(Dana McCaury. Working more than 39 hours a week ‘damages physical and mental health’, study finds. News.com.au. February 3, 2017.)

misophonia

Nobody likes hearing someone crunching their food, but for some it’s more than just an annoyance — the sound triggers a full “fight or flight response.” These people have a rare condition called “misophonia” that makes them extraordinarily sensitive to everyday sounds, and new research confirms that their brains really are wired differently.

For a study published this week in the journal Current Biology scientists scanned the brains of 20 people with misophonia and 22 without. All participants listened to unpleasant sounds including screaming, neutral sounds like rain, and what people considered their “trigger” sounds, like certain eating or breathing sounds. Nobody enjoyed the annoying sounds. But when people with misophonia heard their trigger noises, they started sweating and their heart rates went up.
(Angela Chen. Why the sounds of eating make some people so angry. The Verge. February 5, 2017.)

― conspicuous absence

WASHINGTON — When President Trump traveled to Dover Air Force Base in Delaware this week to pay respects to a fallen member of the Navy SEALs, it was his daughter Ivanka — not his wife, Melania, who accompanied him.

Mrs. Trump’s conspicuous absence at the solemn ceremony only underscored the fact that she vanished from public view days after her husband’s swearing-in two weeks ago. And it raised new questions about what role, if any, she plans to play as first lady.
(Julie Harschfeld Davis. Melania Trump’s Absence From Washington Raises Questions About Her Role. The New York Times. February 2, 2017.)

conspicuous by its (one's) absence

in the lurch

Vulnerable children and senior citizens across the world remained stranded in difficult situations due to President Trump’s controversial travel and refugee bans, as international criticism of the measure mounted Wednesday.

U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said Wednesday that the order violates “our basic principles” and is not an effective way to stop would-be terrorists.

“These measures should be removed sooner rather than later,” said Guterres, who led the U.N. refugee agency for 10 years.

in the lurch

in a vulnerable and unsupported position (Merriam-Webster Dictionary)

hologram

The universe is one “vast and complex hologram” and our three-dimensional world may be an illusion, scientists have claimed.

British, Canadian and Italian scientists have found what they claim is the first evidence that our world is not what we thought it was.

The astrophysicists studied the “afterglow” left over from the Big Bang and found substantial evidence that the universe is holographic.

Bizarre as it may seem, there is currently the same amount of evidence for a holographic world as there is for the traditional structure of the universe, the scientists at the University of Southampton claimed.

The concept of a holographic universe was first suggested in the 1990s but it’s not until now that telescope data has been able to back it up.

The concept is similar to watching a 3D film in a movie.
(Reality might just be a gigantic hologram. New York Post. January 31, 2017.)
