upshot

The American way of dying seems to have become less frantic, desperate and expensive.

That’s the upshot of a new study that finds that seniors insured by Medicare who died in 2015 were less likely to do so in a hospital and more likely to pass away in a home or other community setting than those who died in 2000.
(Melissa Healy. Fewer Americans are spending their final days in the hospital and more are dying at home. Los Angeles Times. June 27, 2018.)

An upshot of the decades-long war on cancer is the popular belief that healthy people should regularly examine their bodies or undergo screening because early detection saves lives.
(New York Times, 2009)

duchess slant

Meghan Markle has handled her whirlwind first month as a royal like a professional, even when things haven't gone according to plan. Tuesday evening was no different, as the Duchess of Sussex joined Prince Harry and the queen at Buckingham Palace for an event honoring the Queen's Young Leaders program.

In a video captured by Simon Perry, the chief foreign correspondent for People magazine, Markle can be seen taking her seat at the start of the awards ceremony, momentarily crossing one leg on top of the other.
(Lucy Yang. Meghan Markle appeared to shun traditional etiquette when she crossed her legs at an event — and her reaction was caught on camera. Insider. June 28, 2018.)

While there is no official protocol that dictates how royal women must sit near the queen, Myka Meier, the founder of Beaumont Etiquette who's an expert on royal etiquette, told INSIDER that "the most formal way for a lady to sit is with her knees and ankles together at all times."
(ibid.)

The first is called the "duchess slant," a term she coined in 2013. In this pose, a woman's legs and ankles are pressed together and angled to one side, "creating a zigzag position to protect modesty."
(ibid.)

Another common pose royal women use when sitting is something Meier calls the "Cambridge cross." In this pose, a woman's legs are pressed together and crossed only at the ankles, with her heels touching the floor.
(ibid.)

antic

Argentina legend Maradona taken to hospital after bizarre antics

Argentina legend Diego Maradona was taken to the hospital Tuesday after Argentina’s dramatic, 2-1 win against Nigeria, according to ESPN Deportes. Why he was taken to the hospital is unclear.

Maradona, regarded by many as the best soccer player ever, acted erratically during the match, as he danced with a Nigeria fan before the match, fell asleep during the first half and celebrated Marcos Rojo’s 86th-minute winner with a middle-fingered outburst toward Nigeria fans in the crowd.
(Jake Nisse. Argentina legend Maradona taken to hospital after bizarre antics. New York Post. June 26, 2018.)

Colored bulbs cast an eerie blue glow in the restroom of a convenience store where people who inject heroin and other drugs have been seeking the relative privacy of the stalls to shoot up.

The blue lights are meant to discourage people from using drugs in store bathrooms by making it more difficult for them to see their veins. It's an idea that's been around for years but is getting a fresh look as a result of the nation's opioid epidemic.

"The hardest-core opiate user still wants to be accurate. They want to make sure the needle goes in the right spot," said Read Hayes, a University of Florida researcher and director of the Loss Prevention Research Council, a retail industry-supported group that is looking at the lights' effectiveness. The purpose of the blue light is to "disrupt that process" and force people to go somewhere else to take drugs, he said.
(Michael Rubinkam. Retailers experiment with blue lights to deter drug use. ABC News. June 24, 2018.)

Some welfare reform programs are aimed at getting people off welfare and into jobs. CAP ignores the hardest-core welfare recipients and goes after those who already are working, or intend to.
(Associated Press, 1993)

Fueled by a combination of access, anonymity and affordability, online porn has catapulted overall pornography consumption -- bringing in new viewers, encouraging more use from existing fans and escalating consumers from soft-core to harder-core material.

play hardball

Over the past week, Democrats and Republicans alike have expressed outrage over the separation of families who have crossed the U.S.-Mexico border illegally. President Trump’s “zero tolerance” policy directs the Justice Department to prosecute migrant adults, thus separating them from children they may be traveling with. The children are given over to either a U.S. relative’s home, foster care, or a juvenile facility.

Initially, Trump stated that he had no desire to sign an executive order regarding the issue. He urged Congress to pass legislation that would change immigration with longevity and permanence, something past administrations were unable to accomplish. However, as pressure rose worldwide for immediate action, fellow Republicans, even his daughter and wife, advocated for a rollback of the policy.
(Douglas Shoen. Democrats cannot afford to play hardball on immigration reform. The Hill. June 24, 2018.)

Democrats cannot afford to play hardball on immigration reform

Woolworths customers have unleashed their fury following the supermarket's move to ban plastic bags from their stores on Wednesday.

Sydney man Peter Dawson is leading the charge against the controversial decision.

"I think it's very inconvenient," the 64-year-old told A Current Affair.
(Reid Butler. Shoppers angry after plastic bags banned at Woolworths. 9news.com.au. June 22, 2018.)

Shoppers have gone into bat for besieged Woolworths staff who were forced to deal with the backlash from the supermarket’s ban on single-use plastic bags.

In the much-publicised build-up to the ban, customers were urged to have patience with staff in Woolworths as the change came into force – but that message seemed to fall on deaf ears, with shoppers quick to express their displeasure.

“This is nothing more than a cash grab,” one of many frustrated social media users wrote this week, along with others who accused the supermarket giant of still using too much plastic in other areas.

But amongst the litany of criticism, some shoppers backed in the message of “don’t bag the retail staff”.
('Don't bag the staff': Shoppers hit back at complaints over Woolies plastic bag ban. Yahoo 7 News. June 22, 2018.)

"Don't bag the retail staff."

dad bod

Thurman, 35, has used his own experience to create a workout that dads can do anywhere, anytime. It's fast and efficient, so dads can be too.

Now that I am a father myself I understand how the "dad bod" can creep up on you. When our son was born a few months ago, it was the most amazing experience of my life.
(Lose the 'dad bod' this Father's Day with this 15-minute, do-anywhere workout. ABC News. June 23, 2018.)

Dad bod is a slang term in popular culture referring to a body shape particular to middle-aged men.

TOKYO (Reuters) - Flea market app operator Mercari Inc’s shares surged 77 percent in their Tokyo stock market debut on Tuesday, underscoring strong investor appetite for a rare Japanese unicorn bent on U.S. expansion.
(Sam Nussey. Rare Japanese unicorn Mercari sparkles in market debut, looks to U.S. Reuters. June 19, 2018.)

A startup company valued at one billion dollars or more.
(American Heritage Dictionary)

corduroy

cord du roy

hooky

This high school is a hooky player’s dream.

At DeWitt Clinton HS in the Bronx, kids who have cut class all semester can still snag a 65 passing grade — and course credit — if they complete a quickie “mastery packet.”

Insisting that students can pass “regardless of absence,” Principal Pierre Orbe has ordered English, science, social studies and math teachers to give “make up” work to hundreds of kids who didn’t show up or failed the courses, whistleblowers said.
(Principal lets students pass even if they never went to class. New York Post. June 16, 2018.)

This high school is a hooky player’s dream.

hook Jack

full-throated

Attorney General Jeff Sessions on Thursday offered a full-throated defense of the Trump administration's policy of separating children from their parents at the border, saying that having kids does not give migrants immunity from prosecution — and found justification for his policies in the Bible.
(Adam Edelman. Sessions cites Bible in defense of breaking up families, blames migrant parents. NBC News. June 4, 2018.)

offered a full-throated defense of the Trump administration's policy

Oxford

Using the full power of one's voice

empty calorie

A few bites here and there at work may be doing more harm than good.

Eating food obtained from vending machines or cafeterias at work adds an average of 1,300 calories to an employee's diet weekly, according to a new study.

Using data from the U.S. Department of Agriculture Food Acquisition and Purchasing Survey, the study found the foods people obtained from work mostly contained "high amounts of sodium and refined grains, with little whole grains and fruit." The food was high in "empty" calories, which contain little to no nutrients and are often composed of solid fats and added sugars.

"This is the first study to use a nationally representative dataset of U.S. households," lead researcher Stephen Onufrak says. "We limited the study to adult-aged participants, 18 and over, who are currently working."
(Tala Salem. Workplace Eating Adds Empty Calories. US News & World Report. June 12, 2018.)

All food contains calories, and we need a certain amount of calories each day. But some foods provide not only calories but also other ingredients that also are critically important, such as vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and others. When a food provides primarily calories, and little else of value to our health, we say that food has "empty calories."
(Understanding empty calories. Harvard Health Letter. June 2016.)

dustup

Jeffery Howell picked the wrong time to get into a brawl. Just recovering from brain surgery, he found himself in a dustup with a group of people, suffered a blow tot the head near the site of the surgical incision and was soon dead.
(David Boroff. Three arrested, including 20-year-old woman, after fisherman who recently underwent brain surgery dies from blow to head. New York Daily News. June 12, 2018.)

dust a person's pants (trousers)

dust a person's coat (jacket)

POW/MIA

4.The United States and the DPRK commit to recovering POW/MIA remains, including the immediate repatriation of those already identified.
(READ: Full text of Trump-Kim signed statement. CNN. June 12, 2018.)

"POW/MIA"

prisoner(s) of war

missing in action

sanctum sanctorum

The New Yorker

In the city of Pyongyang, the sanctum sanctorum of the Workers’ Party of Korea, there are changes afoot that would have vexed Stalin. Repression has not dimmed, but, to indulge the aspirations of the young North Korean élite, a class known to foreigners as “Pyonghattan,” the government has permitted the odd yoga class, squash court, and sushi bar.
(Evan Osnos. Donald Trump and Kim Jong Un’s Nuclear Summit and the Bid for History. The New Yorker. June 18, 2018 issue.)

the sanctum sanctorum of the Workers' Party of Korea

holy of holies

About 500 years after a graphite deposit was discovered in England and sliced into the first pencils, a store devoted to pencils has opened in Lower Manhattan. If the enterprise seems belated, well, it is. Who uses a pencil anymore?

Pencils are like fax machines and margarine: They do a job, sure, but other things do the same job better — pens, email and butter, respectively. You can write a letter in pencil, but it’s more adult to write in pen. You can solve a crossword in pencil, but it’s more courageous in pen.
(Molly Young. A Pencil Shop, for Texting the Old-Fashioned Way. New York Times. May 19, 2015.)

misappropriate

The family of late comedian and film star Chris Farley has filed a federal lawsuit against Trek Bicycle for naming its fat-tired bikes Farley, alleging the Wisconsin-based bike company misappropriated Farley's name and is profiting on his "fat guy" brand of comedy.

Chris Farley was born and raised in Madison, about 30 miles (50 kilometers) from Waterloo, where Trek is based. Fat bikes have grown in popularity because their wider-than-typical tires allow riders to ride across terrain that would be difficult for other types of bikes, such as sand or snow.
(Chris Farley's family sues Trek over name of fat-tired bikes. CBS News. June 6, 2018.)

the Wisconsin-based bike company misappropriated Farley's name and is profiting on his "fat guy" brand of comedy

misappropriate

NEW DELHI -- Increasingly aware of the scope of plastic pollution, governments in more than 60 countries have introduced levies and bans to combat single-use plastic waste, according to U.N. Environment, an agency of the United Nations.

"A growing number of governments are taking action and demonstrating that all nations, whether rich or poor, can become global environmental leaders," Erik Solheim, the agency's head, said in a report released Tuesday about sustainable solutions to single-use plastics.

With its release timed for U.N. World Environment Day, the report noted that rules limiting the use of plastic bags had decreased their use in places such as Morocco, Rwanda and parts of China, sometimes significantly.

obesogen

With 26% of adults classified as obese in the UK in 2016, the hunt for causes and solutions to expanding waistlines is on. While public health messages have focused largely on the food we eat, some scientists suspect there is another factor at play: substances being dubbed as “obesogens” – found in our packaging, household goods and furnishings that might affect our hormones and the buildup of fat in the body.
(The truth about obesogens: can dust and chemicals make you fat? The Guardian. May 22, 2018.)

Bruce Blumberg, a biology professor at the University of California, Irvine, coined the term “obesogen” in 2006 when he discovered that tin-based compounds known as organotins predisposed laboratory mice to gain weight.

the Resolute desk

Such a photograph would, it is fair to assume, have been beyond the most delirious, hallucinatory imaginings of a tropical fever patient five years ago. Donald Trump sits at the Resolute desk in the Oval Office with hands folded and a broad grin. To his right, dressed in black, stands an unsmiling Kim Kardashian West, a reality TV superstar catapulted to fame a decade ago by a sex tape.

“‘I broke the Internet.’ ‘I broke the country!’” parodied Comedy Central’s the Daily Show in response. The journalist Tom Gara of BuzzFeed News tweeted: “It’s amazing that the most powerful person in the world is just taking casual meetings with Trump like this.” And as preparations continue for talks with the North Korean dictator Kim Jong-un, the NBC correspondent Peter Alexander posted: “The other Kim summit.”

the Resolute desk

HMS Resolute

rhabdomyolysis

A Texas teen was reportedly diagnosed with a life-threatening illness after hitting the gym too hard.

Jared Shamburger, 17, said he first started feeling “super” sore last week after lifting weights for 90 minutes at a Houston-area gym, news station KTRK reported.

“Everything hurt,” Shamburger said. “It hurt to the touch. It was swollen.”

The teen, who recently joined the gym, said he was trying to “go hard fast” to compete with his dad and older brother, both of whom had been into bodybuilding for years.

“The mama bear in me kind of took over and I called the pediatrician and said, ‘I really think my son has rhabdo,'” mom Judy Shamburger said, referring to rhabdomyolysis.

Her suspicions turned out to be right. The teen was hospitalized for five days with the life-threatening condition.

rhabdomyolysis
