Chonky

千葉県市川市の動物園ではニホンザルの「パンチ」が人気者で、その姿を見ようと世界中から観客が押し寄せているとか。

子ザルのパンチに限らず、上野のパンダ（中国に帰ってしまいましたが）を始め、動物園や水族館には人気者がいます。

こちらは動物園や水族館ではありませんが、サンフランシスコの海岸沿い、Pier 39と呼ばれる地区では餌を求めてやってくるトド（Stellar sea lion）が見られ、観光客の目玉になっているそうです。

A massive sea lion is stealing all the attention at San Francisco's Pier 39, along with most of the dock.

The Stellar sea lion dubbed "Chonkers" has become a star among the hundreds of barking and pungent pinnipeds that have taken over at Pier 39's K-Dock. 

People from across the country are coming to the tourist attraction to catch a glimpse of the pier's new superstar.

トドの"Chonker"はとりわけ人気者だとあります。

"Chonker"というのは愛称ですが、"chonk"、"chonky"という単語から来ているようです。いずれも、塊を意味する"chunk"が変化したもので、動物に関して言うと、丸々と太っている様子、特にその愛らしさを表現する言葉だそうです。

We define the relevant sense of chonky as “plump or chubby especially in an endearing way”; it is usually used to describe animals of such delightful physique. Chonky is also sometimes used to describe things—such as headphones, chairs, etc.—that are bulky or oversize. Chonky is an alteration of chunky that first appeared in print in the early 2000s.

そして、"chunk"は"chuck"（牛の、首から肩にかけての肉）が訛ったものだとされますが、その"chuck"は"chock"（輪止め; 原義は木の塊、ブロック）から来ているとされます。

まとめると、chock → chuck → chunk → chonk (chonky) という流れになります。
