今年のノーベル文学賞が発表されました。
受賞したのは、多くの日本人生まれで英国籍のカズオ・イシグロ氏でした。
毎年のように受賞が期待される村上春樹氏ですが、ファンの期待は今年も挫かれた格好です。

村上氏受賞の期待については、毎年のように「ハルキスト」と呼ばれる同氏のファンに関する報道に対して、ネットでの反応は、もはや風物誌のようだ、と冷ややかな見方が多いようです。
今年も受賞を逃してしまった訳ですが、海外でも報じられるような話とは思っていなかったところ、BBCで取り上げられているのが目に留まりました。
記事中、”dejected”という単語が使われているのですが、”reject”という単語はよく見かけるのですが、”deject”とは見慣れない単語です。
いずれも、放り投げると言う意味のラテン語jacereを語源としている単語ですが、”deject”とは落胆させる、という意味の動詞です。
村上ファンは、ガッカリでしょうが、来年の受賞に望みを繋いでいることでしょう。

美味しい食べ物には「愛情」がこもっていると感じます。
手作りの料理や、いわゆる「おふくろの味」の原材料には「愛情」という言葉が含まれていても反対する人はいないだろうと思います。
しかしながら、アメリカの厚生当局であるFDAはダメだしをしました。
CONCORD, Mass. - A Massachusetts bakery's granola may be made with love, but federal officials say it souldn't be listed as an ingredient on the package, and it had several violations other than its listing of love.
Nashoba Brook Bakery, in Concord, was taken to task by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for listing "love" as an ingredient on its Nashoba Granola label. In a letter posted this week on the FDA website, the agency said federal regulations require that ingredients "must be listed by their common or usual name."

out of whack
トランプ米大統領がハリケーンの被害に見舞われたプエルトリコを訪問しました。
例によって大統領のコメントがやり玉にあがっています。
WASHINGTON – While President Trump toured Puerto Rico on Tuesday to praise his team's response to Hurricane Maria, some of his critics heard other things — including a joke about the expense of the effort and praise for the fact that only 16 people have died since the deadly storm two weeks ago.
"Sixteen people certified – 16 people versus in the thousands," Trump said during a briefing with Puerto Rican officials; he added that while "every death is a horror," the devastation has not been "a real catastrophe" on the same scale of Hurricane Katrina, which killed some 1,800 people in New Orleans in 2005.
Citing the logistical and financial challenges of the federal disaster response on the island, Trump quipped: "Now I hate to tell you, Puerto Rico, but you've thrown our budget a little out of whack, but you're throwing our budget a little out of whack because we've spent a lot of money on Puerto Rico. And that's fine; we saved a lot of lives."

"whack"というのは、"whack-a-mole"という単語にもみられるように、ムチなどでぴしっと打つことを言うのですが、擬声語です。
“whack”には、「分け前」という意味もあり、これはモノを叩いて分割し、分け前として分配するということに因んでいるいるというせつがあるようです。
そして、"out of whack"はこの「分け前」に預かることができない状況を指し、困った状況、つまり不具合、調子が悪い、という意味になります。

今日の朝刊の1面トップ記事はアメリカ・ラスベガスで発生した銃乱射事件でした。米史上最悪の死者数と報じられています。
A CBS legal executive who said she had no sympathy for the victims killed in Las Vegas because they were “country music fans” — and, therefore likely Republican — has reportedly been fired.
Hayley Getfman-Gold posted the ugly comments on social media about Sunday’s massacre in a conversation over gun control.
“If they wouldn’t do anything when children were murdered I have no hope that Repugs will ever do the right thing,” she wrote on Facebook. “I’m actually not even sympathetic bc country music fans often are Republican gun toters.”
CBS promptly canned her.

pet peeve
飛行機のフライトアテンダントという職業は実のところ肉体労働者だ、というコメントを聞いたことがあります。
女性が憧れる職業のひとつであり、また望んだところで誰しもが就くことのできる職業ではありません。容姿端麗さという、努力だけでは如何ともしがたい、もって生まれたものも影響します。世間的にも評判の高い職業という見方からは逆説的でさえありますが、真実はそうなのだと思います。
そのフライトアテンダントが最も忌み嫌う乗客の行動とは何でしょうか？
WORKING as a flight attendant is not nearly as glamorous as people think.
Flight attendants are at the beck and call of rude passengers, they clean up the rubbish we dump in the aisles, they have to deal with the messes we leave in the bathrooms and they are forced to bear witness to the disgusting things we do during our flights.
And there’s one gross thing passengers do all the time that flight attendants particularly hate.
Annette Long, a flight attendant with 13 years of airline experience, spoke to Business Insider about her biggest pet peeve in the sky.
“We’ve seen people clipping toe nails,” she said.
“It’s very gross and you can’t make them stop. And it’s not an infrequent thing, believe it or not.”
