What's in a name? For Walmart, it will soon be a little less.
The company, which became the largest retailer in the world with a huge chain of stores, is changing its name to reflect its increasing emphasis on e-commerce.
As of Feb. 1, it will no longer be "Wal-Mart Stores" and will get rid of the hyphen and drop "stores" from its legal name.
“While our legal name is used in a limited number of places, we felt it was best to have a name that was consistent with the idea that you can shop us however you like as a customer,'' Doug McMillon, Walmart's president and CEO, said in a statement. "As time goes on, customers will increasingly just think of and see one Walmart.”
(Charisse Jones. Walmart changes name, dropping 'stores' and hyphen, as it underscores online image. USA Today. December 6, 2017.)
What's in a name?

Cheaters never prosper.
Russia unveiled its uniforms for the upcoming Winter Olympics in South Korea last week, a gesture of “What, me worry?” confidence ahead of Tuesday’s momentous decision by the International Olympic Committee on whether to ban the nation from competition in Pyeongchang because of state-orchestrated doping. Well, the verdict’s in. Russia can start looking for the nearest Goodwill bin.
The IOC has banned Russia from the Games. Russian athletes deemed untainted by doping will be allowed to compete, but only under a neutral flag, not a Russian one. They won’t wear their spiffy new uniforms, instead relegated to outfits branded with the acronym “OAR,” Olympic Athlete from Russia. If they win a medal, they’ll hear the Olympic anthem, not Russia’s. Russia’s medal count at Pyeongchang can already be put into the record books: zero.
It’s a punishment unprecedented in the history of the Olympics, and one that IOC officials said fits the unprecedented scale of Russia’s cheating.
(Editorial: How do you say, 'Cheaters Never Prosper' in Russian? Chicago Tribune. December 5, 2017.)
Cheaters Never Prosper

migraine
New, long-acting drugs may hold hope for millions of people who often suffer migraines. Studies of two of these medicines, given as shots every month or so, found they cut the frequency of the notoriously painful and disabling headaches.
The drugs are the first preventive medicines developed specifically for migraines. They work by interfering with a substance involved in modifying nerve signaling and progression of pain and symptoms.
“It's a whole new direction” for treatment and an important advance for people who don't want to take or aren't helped by the daily pills sometimes used now to prevent recurrences, said Dr. Andrew Hershey, neurology chief at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center.
(Help for migraines. The Associated Press. December 4, 2017.)

wait in the wings
Today, the Google Assistant got some cool new tricks, including the ability to find and recommend local services like a plumber, electrician, or locksmith. It’s a neat trick at first glance, but there may be a giant problem waiting in the wings.
In a blog post explaining how the new feature will work, Google lays out how the recommendations are generated:
In many cities the Google Assistant will suggest providers that have been prescreened by Google and companies like HomeAdvisor and Porch so you can feel confident they’re ready to take on the job.
That sounds great! But what about the specific cities where Google hasn’t specifically screened companies?
And if you’re in a city that doesn’t have any available guaranteed or screened providers, you’ll still get an answer from the Assistant with other nearby results.
(Chris Mills. Google Assistant now recommends a plumber or locksmith, and it’s a disaster in the making. BGR. November 30, 2017.)
there may be a giant problem waiting in the wings

朗報 ー ammunition for
A new study has some ammunition for dog people everywhere.
The research, published in the journal Frontiers of Neuroanatomy, says dogs may be brainier than cats. That is, dogs have cerebral cortexes with twice as many neurons — the brain cells responsible for thought, planning and behavior – compared to cats. Scientists have associated neuron density with overall cognitive ability – i.e. intelligence.
For the study, a group of researchers led by Suzana Herculano-Houzel, an associate professor of psychology and biological sciences at Vanderbilt University, examined the neuronal density and brain sizes of various carnivorans, a class of mammals that includes many predators – along with some omnivores and and a few herbivores.
(Jamie Ducharme. Dogs Are Brainier Than Cats, New Study Finds. People. November 30, 2017.)
A new study has some ammunition for dog people
