アマゾンが大規模なリストラを計画しているとのニュースです。
Amazon is laying off employees in the "low hundreds" in an effort to shift head count allocation to businesses that are growing, CNBC has learned.
The Seattle Times first reported that Amazon was laying off "hundreds" of employees and "managing out" others as the company consolidates its retail operations.

その具体的な内容として、数100人規模の解雇（laying off）と、
managing out
とあるのですが、この”managing out”という表現を初めてみました。
辞書には載っていませんので、ネットを検索するとどうやらこれは退職勧奨といった意味に近いようです。
Financial Timesから引用します。
Mr Evans was likely to have been “managed out”, a process that companies sometimes turn to as an alternative to redundancy programmes and as a way of selecting those employees they would like to lose. 韓国平昌で冬季オリンピックが開幕しました。
北朝鮮は金総書記の妹である金予正氏を送り込み、国際社会による経済制裁に穴を開けようとの目論見が見え見えです。
多くの報道機関が、このようなオリンピックの政治利用に対して批判的な記事を展開していますが、CNNはちょっと違うようです。
CNN is getting dragged online for writing a glowing puff piece about North Korean leader Kim Jong Un’s sister appearing at the Olympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea — with a headline claiming she was “stealing the show.”
The article, published Saturday afternoon, began with these cooing words about the woman who gave South Korean President Moon Jae-in an invite to visit North Korea:
“If ‘diplomatic dance’ were an event at the Winter Olympics, Kim Jong Un’s younger sister would be favored to win gold. With a smile, a handshake and a warm message in South Korea’s presidential guest book, Kim Yo Jong has struck a chord with the public just one day into the PyeongChang Games.”

緊急着水 ー ditching
随分久しぶりに国内線の飛行機を利用しました。エコノミークラスの座席に着席すると、前のシートにポケットがあるのは昔から変わらずです。
そして、非常の際の手順を説明した「安全の手引き」（Safety Instructions）なるリーフレットがあるのもお馴染みで、頻繁に飛行機を利用する方はもはやそんなものには目もくれないのだと思いますが、久しぶりなので（というよりも他にすることもないので）、「安全のしおり」を手に取ってみました。
その中に「緊急着水時」という項があり、その対訳が、
ditching
となっています。
改めて、"ditch"の意味をチェックした次第です。
一般的に知られている"ditch"の意味は、捨てる、という意味なので、緊急着水という日本語にはそぐわないように思われるかもしれないのですが、この"ditch"には航空専門用語として、
bring (an aircraft) down on water in emergency
という意味があります。
「安全のしおり」のイラストには、飛行機か水面に浮かび、乗客は機体に横付けされたボートに避難している様子が描かれています。

“four out of five”
最近Yahoo! Japanのヘッドラインにも出ていたのでご存知の方も多いと思いますが、「洗剤チャレンジ」と呼ばれる危険な行為がネットで広まり問題になっています。
敢えて説明するのもバカバカしいのですが、固形洗剤を口に含んでどれだけ耐えられるかどうかを競い合うという、向こう見ずな若者の愚かな悪ふざけです。洗剤を飲むバカはいません。お腹を壊します。最悪の場合は死ぬこともあるということですから、悪ふざけでは済みません。
さて、USAトゥデイ紙の記事から引用です。
この「洗剤チャレンジ」なる行為には、P&G社の販売するTide Podという固形漂白剤が使われており、同社は自社製品のイメージが傷つく事に頭を悩ませながらも生産には拍車をかけており、商魂逞しいとはこのことでしょうか。

さて、前置きが長くなりましたが、引用の最後の部分で使われている表現に着目しましょう。

とある部分の、"four out of five dollars of..."というところで、少し解釈に躓いたのですが、ここで"dollars"の意味は、通貨のドルのことではなくて、富とか、収益、といった意味です。（以前も取り上げたことがあります。）ここでは、「市場」といった意味が適当でしょうか。
興味深いのは、"four out of five (dollars)"という部分です。
最初に躓いてしまったのは、"five dollars"をまとまったひとかたまりとして読んでしまったということがあります。
ここは、そうではなく、"four out of five"、つまり「5分の4」の"dollars"と解釈すべきということになります。

バーコード！？ ― combover
トランプ米大統領の髪型については、大統領選の時から何かと取り沙汰されていました。
あれは鬘（かつら）ではないのか？というメディアの推量に対して、敢えて髪を触らせて鬘ではないことを証明したり、といったこともありました。
ところが最近になって、改めてトランプ氏の髪型について、禿ではないものの「フサフサ」という訳でもなさそうだという事情が明らかになりました。
