昨日取り上げた記事中で、気になった表現がもうひとつありました。
繰り返しの引用になりますが、下記をお読み下さい。

現代はSNSの不適切な投稿で職を失いかねない時代です。
大学は不適切発言をした教授をクビにした訳ですが、そのくだり、
sent ~ packing
という表現に目が留まりました。
Merriam-Websterによると、
to force (someone or something) to leave a place or situation
ということで、"packing"というのは荷物をまとめる（梱包する）よう促すというのは、つまりその場から退去せよということに他なりません。
ところで、日本語では解雇することを、俗にお払い箱（にする）、などと表現しますね。
"send ~ packing"にはこのお払い箱に通ずるものがあるように思ったのですが、ここで言う箱は荷物梱包用の箱ではありませんでした。
「お払い箱」は元々「お祓い箱」と書いていたものだそうで、神社で配布されるお祓いの札を入れた箱のことだったそうです。つまり信者の人々にとってはありがたいお札を入れた箱だったのですが、毎年古いお札と新しいお札を交換するにあたって、古いお札を入れる箱が「お祓い箱」と見做されるようになったためか、不要なものを入れる箱、という意味に転化してきたそうです。

アメリカではハリケーンHarveyがテキサス州を中心に大変な被害をもたらしましたが、フロリダにあるUniversity of Tampaの教授がHarveyによる被害は"karma"によるものだという不適切な発言をツイッターに投稿し、大学側が教授を解雇するに至ったということです。

そういえば過去にも、東日本大震災発生を人間に対する罰だと発言して批判された政治家がいましたが・・・。
"karma"という言葉はヒンドゥー教や仏教から来ており、「業」などと訳されますが、そもそもはサンスクリット語で「行為」を意味するそうです。
英語に取り入れられたのは19世紀頃のようですが、その意味は、
Fate or destiny resulting from one's previous actions
(American Heritage Dictionary)
として用いられるようになります。
つまり個人の成したことの報い、というような意味合いです。
罷免された教授の発言は、テキサス州がトランプ氏（現大統領）を支持したからハリケーンに見舞われた、というものだったようですが、見識を疑われても仕方ないでしょう。

白状 ー come clean
日本語で悪事や隠し事を「白状する」と言いますが、英語では、
come clean
という表現があることを知りました。
A man who claimed he was mistaken for a neo-Nazi and stabbed because of his buzz cut admits he made it all up — and says the stabbing was just an accident, according to a report.
Joshua Witt, 26, told cops recently that he was getting out of his car in the parking lot of a Steak ‘n Shake in Sheridan, Colorado, when he was attacked by a knife-wielding man.
But when presented with evidence that his story was sheer nonsense, Witt came clean, BuzzFeed reported.

私は、"clean"と「白状」の（清潔さとしてのイメージとしての）「白」の一致を面白いと思ったのですが、広辞苑で「白状」を引いてみると、ここでの「白」は「申す」という意味なんだそうです。
「告白」や「自白」といった言葉の「白」も同じそうです。
小学館の新選漢和辞典を引いてみると、白状とは罪人の申し出たことを書いた文書となっています。
「建白」や「独白」といった日本語の「白」も同じであることが分かり、今日は何だか日本語の勉強になりました。

"cicle the drain"というフレーズをご存知でしょうか？
まずは下記の引用を読んでみて下さい。

Searsはアメリカで展開しているデパートで、私もアメリカ滞在中に利用したことがあります。あくまで印象ですが、JC Pennyが大丸とかタカシマヤとすると、Searsはダイエーのようなイメージです。
そんなことはどうでもいいと思いますが、デパート不況は日本もアメリカも変わらないと見えて、Searsが28店舗を閉鎖するというのがニュースになっています。
そこで、"circle the drain"ですが、この表現、辞書を引いてみたのですが載っていません。記事の内容からして、何となく意味するところは想像がつきますが、意味がはっきりしないのはすっきりしないのでネット検索すると、ある程度信頼できるソースの定義としては、
Experience a rapidly worsening situation apparently leading to failure or disaster
(Oxford Dictionary Online)
などとありました。
"drain"は排水設備という意味の他、（金銭や精力などの）消費、消耗、といった意味合いがありますので、Searsの経営が悪化してきているということでは理解できますね。
その"drain"を目的語としてとる動詞がなぜ"circle"なのか、が判然としなかったのですが、"drain"を排水管と考えると、その排水管に吸い込まれるようにして流れ込んでいくイメージが"cicle"でしょうか。
同様の表現には"down the drain"というフレーズがあり、こちらは大抵の辞書に載っていますが、これは物事が駄目になる、失われる、浪費される、といった意味合いです。

昨日に引き続き略語を取り上げますが、

が何を指すかご存知でしょうか？
例えば以下のような文脈です。
Her system had indeed been infected by a virus, and I had to conduct several sweeps with Malwarebytes Anti-Malware (still the best recovery tool out there, IMHO) to get rid of it.

日本語に訳すならば、「私見では・・・」とか、「卑見では・・・」といったところでしょうか。
