dusting

米北東部は積雪に見舞われているようです。

ニューヨークでは数十センチ積もって交通に障害が出ているという記事を見かけます。

一方、ワシントンDCではそれほど積もらなかったようですが、バイデン大統領は「通勤」を取りやめて「在宅勤務」に切り替えたそうです。

「在宅」とはホワイトハウスでの執務で、取り止めた「通勤」というのも、そのホワイトハウスから数ブロック行ったところの国務省での仕事ということなんですが。

 NYCの積雪が"a foot-and-a-half of snow"であったのに対して、DCについては、

mere dusting 

と表現されています。

この"dusting"とは、

a small amount of something that falls over a surface

(Merriam-Webster Dictionary)

ということで、つまりは地面をうっすら覆う程度の（少ない）積雪であった、という意味です。

ほこりとか塵（ちり）の"dust"から来ているのですが、積雪の表現で使われるとは知りませんでした。

今冬はまだ首都圏での積雪を見ていませんが、例年“dusting”レベルなのに転倒者やら電車遅延などがあると雪国の人に笑われるというのを思い出します。
