「デバイス」の意味 ー left to your own devices

leave (someone) to his/her own devices

Collins Cobuild Dictionary of Idioms

If someone is left to their own devices, they are left to do what they want, or to look after themselves without any help.

And traversing the emotional realities can be a solitary journey. “All too often, individuals are left to their own devices when it comes to finding a new sense of purpose in a post-retirement period that could be as long as the middle years in duration,” said Mr. Freedman, author of “How to Live Forever: The Enduring Power of Connecting the Generations.” “Many feel like they are all alone in navigating the new terrain, practically and emotionally.”
(Kerry Hannon. My Work Life Is Over. What’s Next? New York Times. September 12, 2019.)

out of line

WASHINGTON – President Donald Trump said his former top national security adviser was "way out of line" with his administration's foreign policy goals and repeatedly slammed the veteran diplomat for advocating for U.S. military engagement in Iraq.

In his first remarks on John Bolton since his dismissal, Trump said the two "maybe" split on good terms. Bolton, Trump's third national security adviser in as many years, had disputed Trump's characterization Tuesday that he had been fired.

"I hope we left on good stead, but maybe we haven’t," Trump told reporters gathered in the Oval Office. "John wasn’t in line with what we were doing."
(Trump slams former top national security aide John Bolton, calling him 'way out of line.' USA Today. September 11, 2019.)

way out of line" with his administration's foreign policy goals

get the best of

The smell of a mouthwatering meal is hard to ignore — especially when it belongs to someone else. At least that's the suggestion of a recent study that found nearly 30% of drivers are snacking from the food they're responsible for delivering.

The survey conducted by US Foods, which supplies food to restaurants, gathered information from about 500 food delivery drivers and more than 1,500 customers in America who order through apps such as DoorDash, Postmates, Grubhub and UberEats.

Respondents ranged from 18 to 77 years old, with a median age of 31. Drivers who reported working for at least one food delivery app had a median age of 30. In an effort to better understand the process of ordering and delivering meals, the company asked both groups about their "habits and pain points."

Of the drivers surveyed, 54% admitted to being tempted by the smell of a customer's food, and about half of those people actually took a bite.

"We're sorry to report that sometimes, impulse gets the best of deliverers, and they violate their sacred duty by taking some of the food!" US Foods said in a statement.
(Dani Matias. 1 In 4 Food Delivery Drivers Admit To Eating Your Food. NPR News. July 30, 2019.)

...sometimes, impulse gets the best of deliverers...

というものなのですが、”impulse”は衝動、”get the best of...”

imbroglio

WASHINGTON — The Secretary of Commerce threatened to fire top employees at the federal scientific agency responsible for weather forecasts last Friday after the agency’s Birmingham office contradicted President Trump’s claim that Hurricane Dorian might hit Alabama, according to three people familiar with the discussion.

That threat led to an unusual, unsigned statement later that Friday by the agency, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, disavowing the National Weather Service’s position that Alabama was not at risk. The reversal caused widespread anger within the agency and drew accusations from the scientific community that the National Weather Service, which is part of NOAA, had been bent to political purposes.
(Commerce Chief Threatened Firings at NOAA After Trump’s Dorian Tweets, Sources Say. New York Times. September 9, 2019.)

The accusations against Mr. Ross are the latest developments in a political imbroglio that began more than a week ago, when Dorian was bearing down on the Bahamas and Mr. Trump wrote on Twitter that Alabama would be hit “harder than anticipated.” A few minutes later, the National Weather Service in Birmingham, Ala., posted on Twitter that “Alabama will NOT see any impacts from Dorian. We repeat, no impacts from Hurricane Dorian will be felt across Alabama.”
(ibid.)

a political imbroglio

グル ー in cahoots

Boris Johnson: EU is in cahoots with MPs to block Brexit

BORIS JOHNSON has accused MPs and the EU of collaborating to block Brexit, as he warned of the increasing risk of leaving without a deal.

The prime minister claimed Brussels is ‘not moving in their willingness to compromise’ and warned a no-deal Brexit becomes more likely the longer it goes on.

He urged the UK’s ‘European friends to compromise’ but said their position is likely to harden the more they believe Westminster can block Brexit.
(Richard Wheeler. Boris Johnson: EU is in cahoots with MPs to block Brexit. Metro News. August 15, 2019.)

in cahoots
