quiet quitting

quiet quitting

Workplace ideologies continue to shift and evolve for the American workforce — and now there’s a trending new philosophy that's connected to a desire, at least among some, for better mental health.

The emerging mindset is called quiet quitting — and it's about modifying the all-out commitment to one’s career.

"Quiet quitting refers to the personal decision to quit putting in too much effort at work," explained Amy Morin, a psychotherapist in the Florida Keys, to FOX Business.
(Erica Lamberg. Workplace's new 'quiet quitting' trend — and the pitfalls for today's employees. FOX Business. August 4, 2022.)

hold sway

Election results in a slate of key primary races Tuesday night underscored former President Donald Trump's enduring influence over the Republican Party, despite signals that his status as its de facto leader may be eroding.

Trump took a victory lap on social media early Wednesday, suggesting the results demonstrated the power of his endorsement as a deciding factor in each race where he had weighed in.
(Kevin Breuninger. Trump still holds sway in GOP as MAGA candidates win in key primary races. CNBC. August 3, 2022.)

Trump still holds sway in GOP as MAGA candidates win in key primary races

A retired four-star Army general said that he thinks President Trump is a “serious threat to US national security” because the president "is refusing to protect vital US interests from active Russian attacks."

Retired Gen. Barry McCaffrey tweeted Friday that “it is apparent that he is for some unknown reason under the sway of (Russian President Vladimir) Putin.”

pick up the slack: その2

Between slowing revenue growth and an increasingly murky outlook for tech companies in general, Google is tasking its employees to put in harder shifts at work.

At Google—one of the biggest tech players around today—executives are urging employees to pick up the slack.

“There are real concerns that our productivity as a whole is not where it needs to be for the headcount we have,” Sundar Pichai, CEO of Google parent company Alphabet, reportedly told employees last week.
(Tristan Bove. Google chief warns bloated staff of ‘real concerns’ over productivity. Fortune. August 01, 2022.)

"pick up the slack"というのは、弛んでいるところ(slack)を引き締める、という意味で、お腹周りの弛みをエクササイズで引き締めるということもありますが、気を引き締める、つまり、喝を入れる、という意味でも使われます。

The president said that al-Zawahiri was killed in Kabul. U.S. government had multiple, independent sources confirming al-Zawahiri's whereabouts at a safehouse, a senior administration official told reporters on a call Monday evening. He was ultimately taken out by a drone at 9:48 p.m. ET Saturday, while he was on the balcony of the safehouse, and his family members were in different rooms of the house. The U.S. government, the senior administration official said, has a high level of confidence that no one else was killed in the strike.

The senior administration official said the president received regular updates as the U.S. government zeroed in on al-Zawahiri. Once the safehouse was located, the president wanted to understand more about the layout of the safehouse's doors and windows to avoid other casualties. In a July 25 meeting, the president authorized a precise, tailored air strike that would minimize civilian deaths as much as possible, the senior administration official said.
(Al Qaeda leader Ayman al-Zawahiri killed in drone strike, Biden says. CBS News. August 1, 2022.)

He was ultimately taken out by a drone at 9:48 p.m. ET Saturday

digital nomad

digital nomad

When Michelle Checchi, 29, left the US in 2019, she only planned to be gone for a few months — as long as it took to drain her savings account.

Today, she's still traversing the globe, working remotely as a freelance writer and video producer — making $4,000 in the typical month while only working 15 to 30 hours per week, according to bank documents reviewed by Insider.

A growing number of digital nomads, or remote workers that travel for weeks, months, or — in her case — "for the foreseeable future." Over 15 million Americans describe themselves as digital nomads, up 42% from 2020 and 112% from 2019, according to MBO Partners' 2021 State of Independence study. Driving this trend is the growing flexibility of remote work, a longing to see the world, and the desire to cut costs.
(Jacob Zinkula. A 29-year-old part-time remote worker living abroad and making $4,000 a month explains how she finds work and affords her lifestyle. Insider. July 31, 2022.)

Authorities in Spain will unfold their plans for the digital nomad visa during the following months in an effort to attract internationals who can temporarily live in Spain while working for companies or clients outside the country.

Such a scheme would also help Spain’s economic sector to recover from the crisis caused by the Coronavirus and its new strains, SchengenVisaInfo.com reports.
(Spain to Create Digital Nomad Visa. News Schengen Visa. January 31, 2022.)
