Hideki Irabu never became what many thought he would be.
Irabu, the former New York Yankees fireballer from Japan, was found dead in Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif., on Wednesday. Most reports say of an apparent suicide. He was 42.
It didn't last, but Hideki Irabu and Yankees owner George Steinbrenner were all smiles during the Japanese fireballer's first days in pinstripes.
After the shock and sorrow wears off, some will be able to trivialize Irabu's baseball career in America. Let's not forget, he was supposed to be Nolan Ryan, just much faster. Yes, the hype was working overtime in 1997 before he made his major league debut with the Yankees.
At 6-foot-4, 240 pounds, Irabu was dealing. He fanned nine of the first 19 Tigers he faced. His strikeout pitch was the split-fingered fastball. I can remember the crowd going wild after every punch out. It was a magical night in the Big Ball Orchard in the South Bronx.
Irabu pitched 6 2/3 strong innings. He allowed two runs on five hits and four walks.
Like Mets fans did for Dwight Gooden, nicknamed Dr. K when he broke into the league, fans at Yankee Stadium tracked Irabu's strikeouts with seven sets of K cards, including three in Japanese.
(Rob Parker. Hideki Irabu gave us night to remember. ESPNNew York.com. July 28, 2011)

― thin edge of wedge
Could Google have caught the Norway killer?
With all the data Google collects about us and our search histories, could the company use its technical prowess to help catch terrorists and mass murderers before they commit crimes?
Norweigan daily Dagbladet reported that terrorist Anders Breivik spent 200 days searching Google for terms such as "how to make a bomb" before he went on his rampage.
Already Google uses data from searches to improve its targeted advertising and search rankings - and even to track the spread of the flu - leading academic ideas site The Conversation to ask the question "Why didn't Google catch the Norway killer?"
(Asher Moses. Could Google have caught the Norway killer? Sydney Morning Herald. July 28, 2011.)
Speaking to the website, Charles Sturt University computer science lecturer Craig Wright said he expected people in European countries to call for search engines to monitor user behaviour as a result of the attacks.
He said it "would be possible, but extremely difficult" for Google to monitor searches and raise red flags for users who frequently and repeatedly perform suspicious searches.
In the case of targeted advertising, if Google's algorithm got it wrong the worst outcome would be slightly reduced profits. But when picking out terrorists there is a far lower tolerance for errors.
And the idea of Google regularly monitoring search terms without a court order would raise significant privacy issues.
Danny Sullivan, editor-in-chief of Search Engine Land, raised the point that searching for something - for example bomb making instructions - wasn't the same as actually committing the criminal act.
And he also said that searching for mass murderers could be the thin edge of the wedge.
色々と議論がある中、最終的には、"searching for mass murderes could be the thin edge of the wedge"ということです。そこで今日の表現、"thin edge of the wedge"ですが、辞書では、

Among those listing substantial property holdings or income from stock dividends in 2002 are Sens. Lamar Alexander, R-Tenn.; Richard Shelby, R-Ala.; Bob Graham, D-Fla.; and Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif. Others with eye-popping numbers included Sens. Edward Kennedy, D-Mass., who listed four family trusts worth up to $45 million; John D. Rockefeller IV, D-W.Va., who reported three blind trusts worth from $80 million to more than $125 million; and banking heir Peter Fitzgerald, R-Ill., whose assets include up to $50 million in Bank of Montreal stock.
(Associated Press. 2003.)
A couple of the best friends I've made in the real estate business are people I never sold a house to, and who, by the end of our time together, I didn't want to sell a house to (though I probably would've). One was an African-American lawyer, Geoff Murphy, who was determined to buy an eye-popping mansion at an eye-popping price, slap in the middle of the (all-white) Seminary section of my former home town of Haddam, New Jersey.
(Richard Ford. The Shore (Short Story). New Yorker. 2004.)
Her fabric collection is on loan to the Atlanta History Center. Here a visitor can, with permission, sift through drawers of her weavings, feeling the slippery silks and chamois-soft wools. In one drawer is a stack of scarves, where the eye-popping colors range through celery, eggplant, cranberry, raspberry, pokeberry, mandarin, sea foam, split pea and pumpkin.

I may be wrong but I suspect that for all of the tabloid talk of divorce, my situation is the more common situation among American husbands. We are married to wives better -- far better -- than we deserve.
(Benjamin J. Stein. Unshared Sacrifice. American Spectator. 2005.)
When Winfrey started in the talk-show business 20 years ago, her goal was to beat Phil Donahue, then the reigning talk-show champ. As the Jerry Springer era of tabloid talk shows came into favor, she vowed to use her show to promote good, not sleaze.
(Ann Oldenburg. The divine Miss Winfrey? USA Today. 2006.)
Even by the standards of British tabloid journalism, the News of the World newspaper may have finally gone too far. # Clive Goodman, the royalty correspondent at the paper, owned by News Corp., was charged late Wednesday along with one other person for allegedly hacking into cellphone messages. Police have been investigating whether the men accessed the phones of the royal family or their staff as well as other celebrities and politicians.
(Associated Press. August, 10, 2006.)

A student proves that even couponing newbies can save hundreds of dollars like expert couponers do.
Lauren Liggett, a college student and a newbie at coupon clipping, tells how she has been saving $300 dollars every month by using her coupons.
Although the Liggetts are not having financial difficulties, Lauren still wants to practice couponing in order to help her parents out, who are currently paying for her college education. Her mom is a realtor and her dad is working part-time as a salesman for cars (her dad is also a retired engineer for IBM). Combined, Lauren’s parents have a low-six-figure income.
(Student Saves $300 Through Couponing. Grocery.com.)
Sacramento -- As California's elected leaders took drastic steps to cut spending last year, the state was paying hundreds of its workers six-figure earnings that far exceeded base salaries, according to newly released compensation data for public employees.
The data, compiled by state Controller John Chiang, show that more than 500 state employees made more than $240,000 before taxes in 2010. The controller listed last year's pay for all 256,222 state workers on his website, but did not include their names.
(Marisa Lagos. Hundreds of Calif. state workers earn 6 figures. San Francisco Chronicle. July 6, 2011.)
