毎度おなじみ、「こんな意味もあったの？」のコーナーです。（久しぶり、かな？）

近所のスーパーに買い物に行こうと玄関を出たところで、あっ、忘れた！と思うことが度々あります。そうです、マイバッグを持っていくのを忘れることがあります。

今時、レジ袋はどこも有料で、2円～3円取られますから、マイバッグの持参はほとんど常識になっています。

プラスティックごみを減らそうという動きは世界全体で進んでおり、アメリカでもニューヨークのある地区では"plastic bag ban"（つまりレジ袋の配布禁止）が3月から施行されるそうです。

Retailers are allowed to offer paper sacks for five cents a pop at checkout — but they’re already having trouble stocking the gear due to a nationwide shortfall.

It’s a problem manufacturers say could last up to five years because there simply aren’t enough factories to meet the booming demand, as efforts to reduce environmentally unfriendly plastic bags increase.

“It’s a major issue,” Phil Rozenski, a spokesman for Novolex, one of several major bag manufacturers in North America told The Post.

ところで、この"plastic bag ban"の動きを受けて、意外なところで影響が出ているそうです。

その影響というのが、紙袋の調達が難しくなっているということらしいのですが、ビニール袋（プラスティック製）がダメなら、紙（paper bag）でと思ったところが、生産が追い付かなかったり、という状況があるようです。

ということで、記事は以下のようなくだりとなります。

日本ではあまり見かけないように思いますが、アメリカではお店で食料品などを買うと、"Do you need bag?"と聞かれ、その際渡されるのは紙製の袋であることが多かったように記憶します。

記事の最後の部分で、

という部分がありますが、ここの"spoken for"という表現に着目しましょう。

"speak (for)"という動詞にこんな意味があるとは知らなかったのですが、ここでは、

という意味で用いられており、つまり「予約済み」という意味になります。

興味深い写真に目が留まりました。

太陽の表面を接写したという写真です。

アメリカがハワイのマウイ島に設置した望遠鏡で撮影したというその写真は、細胞組織のようにも見えますが、その細胞のように見える1つ1つは何とメキシコ州程の大きさがあるとのことです。


A new telescope has captured some of the most detailed, close-up images of the sun ever taken, the National Science Foundation announced Wednesday.

One of the images shows a pattern of turbulent "boiling" plasma that covers the entire sun. The cell-like structures – each about the size of Texas – are the signature of violent motions that transport heat from the inside of the sunto its surface.

According to the NSF, the Inouye Solar Telescope will "enable a new era of solar science and a leap forward in understanding the sun and its impacts on our planet."

The telescope is located on the summit of Mount Haleakala on Maui, in Hawaii.

の意味ですが、その発音はカタカナで「クローズアップ」ではなく、「クロースアップ」です。

感染が拡大する一方の新型肺炎ですが、日本国内では初めてとなる、中国に渡航歴のない男性の感染が確認され、今朝のトップニュースになっています。

朝食を食べながら聞いていたラジオニュースでの専門家の解説によりますと、新型肺炎に対する特効薬は存在せず、対症療法しかないとのことでした。

新薬（ワクチン）の登場が待ち望まれるところであろうと思われますが、米国では既に開発は始まっているようです。

しかしながら、新薬の開発には通常でも何年も（あるいは10数年も）かかると言われていますので、現在の感染の急拡大には間に合わないことはあきらかです。

のんきなことは言ってられないということから、米国の厚生当局は新薬開発のスピードアップを明言しています。記事の該当箇所が以下ですが、

ここで"fast-track"という表現に注目です。

この"fast-track"の"track"とは、恐らく路線とか車線、あるいは陸上競技場のトラック（走路、レーン）のことを指しています。

陸上のトラックだと一番速い走者は最も内側のレーンを走ります。また、鉄道の路線は鈍行と急行、新幹線では当然違ってきます。道路における緊急車両やバスの専用レーンというものもあります。

従って、"fast-track"は、以下の定義からも分かる通り、ある目的のために迅速処理を行うという意味の動詞の意味で用いられるようになったようです。

製薬業界の用語としては、”fast-track”は日本語では「迅速審査」、「優先審査」とも呼ばれているようです。

この行方不明に関しては、女性と交際のあった男性が怪しまれていました。

記事のくだりで、


he is being fingered as a person of interest in her disappearance


という箇所があり、ここで使われている動詞"finger"という表現を取り上げました。

American Heritage Dictionaryでは"Informal"のラベルが付けられており、ランダムハウス英和辞書では「米話」となっていますが、

という意味で、指を指して「あいつの仕業だ」というのがこの動詞"finger"が意味するところです。

バスケットボールファンならずとも、Kobe Bryantというプレイヤーの名前は有名で、私も耳にしたり、ニュース記事の見出しに見つけたことが何度もあります。

そのKobe Bryantさんが乗ったヘリコプターがカリフォルニア州で山の斜面に激突する事故を起こし、乗っていた13歳の娘さんも含む9名が命を落とすという悲劇が起きました。

ヘリコプターが衝突したことで火災が発生した模様ですが、記事で、

とあります。

ここでの"brush fire"を見て、"bush fire"（山火事）の間違いじゃないの？と思ったのですが、一応辞書を引いてみることに。

すると、ランダムハウス英和辞書には"brush fire"というエントリがちゃんとあって、


（大規模な山火事と区別して）低木地帯の火事


という定義が載っていたのには驚きました。

この"brush"は低木とかやぶ、という意味で、我々が良く知っているブラシの意味の"brush"とは別の単語ですが、語源欄を見てみると同根のようです。

ややこしいのは、"bush"という単語も低木、灌木の意味なので、"bush fire"も意味合いとはそのような低木が密集する地帯での火事であると解釈されることです。

ランダムハウス英和辞書では、"bush fire"については、


（特にオーストラリアの）雑木林地帯の山火事


と解説しており、オーストラリア英語なのかなとも思わされます。

American Heritage Dictionaryでは"bush fire"のエントリーは無く、Merriam-Websterでは、"Australian"のラベルがされていることから推測するに、やはり"bush fire"はオーストラリア英語なのかもしれません。

Merriam-Websterでは、"an uncontrolled fire in a bush area"とあり、規模の違いにより、"bush fire"と"brush fire"を使い分けているということもあるかもしれません。

"bush fire"には昨年末からオーストラリア東海岸を中心に多地点で勃発している山火事を想起します。

"brush fire"はそのような手に負えない山火事というよりも、限定的なエリアでの小規模な火災を想定するものだろうと思われます。
