toss-up

いよいよ米中間選挙の投票日となりました。

これまでも関連記事をいくつか取り上げる機会がありましたが、とりわけ民主と共和の勢力が拮抗している上院（Senate）の議席の行方が注目されます。

報道によれば、下院は共和党優勢、上院については"toss-up"という見方のようです。

"toss-up"とは、五分五分の見込み、という意味で、コインを投げ（toss up）、表が出るか、裏が出るか分からない状況、つまり確率が半々ということです。

Republicans have a grip on the House majority. But the Senate is firmly up for grabs.

今回の選挙に関して、この"toss-up"という表現が随所に見られます。
