関係代名詞 whom

今日はネタに困りまして、少しお堅い話になりますが文法の話題にしたいと思います。

 

先月のニュース記事ですが、トラス前首相の退陣表明後のイギリス保守党党首選についての記事を読んでいたら、以下のようなくだりがありました。Fox Newsの記事です。

 

 

Sunak, whom the BBC reports has the backing of almost 150 lawmakers, said Sunday that he wants to "fix our economy, unite our party and deliver for our country."

お気付きでしょうか？

とある部分の、関係代名詞whomについて考えたいと思います。

 

おさらいとして、人が先行詞である場合の関係代名詞にはwhoとwhomなどがありますが、whoは主格、whomは目的格というのがポイントです。（to whomやfor whomなど、前置詞と組み合わされる場合は、与格とも解釈されます。）

 

従って、

 

 

My sister, who lives in Chicago, has three children.

 

 

であり、

 

 

The lady whom you just met is a professor of music.

 

 

です。（例文はいずれもランダムハウス英和辞書から引用。）

 

2番目の例文が先行詞を目的格として捉える関係代名詞whomの用法で、先行詞（The lady）は、関係代名詞whomに続く部分（you just met）の動詞met（meet）の目的語、という関係ですね。

 

始めに引用した記事に戻りますと、

 

 

Sunak, whom the BBC reports has the backing of almost 150 lawmakers, said...

 

 

は少し複雑になっています。まずは、

 

 

Sunak... said...

 

 

というのが骨格で、関係代名詞whomの先行詞であるSunak（スナク氏）は、“the BBC reports”とある部分の動詞reportの目的語になってはいますが、“has the backing of almost 150 lawmakers”とある部分の主語と解釈されますから、ここは、関係代名詞whomではなく、whoが用いられるべきところです。

 

とは、書いてみたものの、Fox Newsの記事の文法間違いを指摘するというのも畏れ多く、改めて手元の文法書を紐解いてみたという訳です。

 

まずはランダムハウス英和辞書から。

 

「関係詞の後の動詞にひかれて who が whom の形を取ることがあるが標準用法とはされない」とあり、

I received a letter from a man whom I thought was my enemy.

敵だと思っていた男から手紙がきた。

という例文が載っています。

 

この例文の構造は、引用したFox Newsの記事のものとほとんど同じです。つまり、関係代名詞の直後に、"I thought"という挿入句があります。

 

「標準用法とはされない」という解説に、間違いではないけれども、厳密には正しくない、というニュアンスを感じます。

 

もうひとつ、手元にある文法の参考書では、関係代名詞を解説した章の中で、“relative clauses with indirect statement”というセクションがあり、以下のようにあります。

 

 

It is often possible to combine relative clauses with indirect statements and similar structures, e.g. I know/said/feel/hope/wish (that)..., especially in an informal style. Expressions like I know, I said etc come after the relative pronoun...

 

（中略）

 

In this structure, people sometimes use whom as a subject pronoun. This is not generally considered correct.

 

This is a letter from my father, whom we hope will be out of hospital soon.

(More correct: ...who we hope will be out...)

ということで、Fox Newsの記事に関して言えば、正しくは、

 

 

Sunak, who the BBC reports has the backing of almost 150 lawmakers, said...

 

 

なるのですが、細かい文法事項に関してはネイティヴは寛容なところがあるのかなと思わされる一件でした。
