Texans cast their votes in primaries Tuesday, the first contests of the 2018 election cycle. But voters in the Lone Star State have been voting for almost two weeks already — and there's been a big surge in enthusiasm across the board.
Driven by anti-President Trump fervor, in this typically deep red state, there are plenty of positive signs for a once-latent Democratic Party in the state. Early vote turnout for the minority party has surpassed GOP totals — and even bested their 2016 numbers. Democrats have also fielded a record number of candidates in all 36 congressional districts, and there's the potential to flip maybe three or more seats come November.
(Polls Close In Texas Primary, With Democrats Hoping To Show Off Big Turnout. NPR. March 6, 2018.)
Texans cast their votes...
voters in the Lone Star State have been voting...

Hoosier
Grabbing mimosa ingredients the day of an impromptu brunch.
Picking up a bottle of red wine for Sunday dinner while grocery shopping.
Rushing out to buy a case of your favorite beer because a few of your friends have invited themselves over at the last minute to watch a full day of NFL action.
These Sunday shopping scenarios were impossibilities in Indiana. But not now. Gov. Eric Holcomb signed a historic bill Wednesday that made Sunday carryout alcohol sales legal in Indiana.
Sunday ushered in the new reality that allows grocery, package liquor, drug and convenience stores to sell alcohol between the hours of noon and 8 p.m. on Sundays. The milestone was still setting in for Hoosiers who figured the state's ban on such sales would be as tied to the state's legacy as breaded tenderloins are.
(Justin L Mack. Sunday alcohol sales come to Indiana stores for the first time. Indy Star. March 4, 2018.)
Hoosier
以前、the Peach Stateやthe Yellowhammer State、Big Appleなど、アメリカの地名の異名を取り上げてきましたので参考ください。

hung parliament
SYDNEY (Reuters) - Asian shares were on the backfoot and the safe-haven yen rose on Monday amid fears of a global trade war, while the euro was choppy as investors worried Italy’s national elections could deliver an anti-establishment government.
Italian voters delivered a hung parliament on Sunday, flocking to anti-establishment and far-right parties in record numbers and casting the euro zone’s third-largest economy into a political gridlock that could take months to clear.
(Swati Pandey. Asian shares subdued; euro choppy amid Italian uncertainty. Reuters. March 5, 2018.)
a hung parliment
a parliament in which no political party has a clear majority
(Merriam-Webster Dictionary)

Does this selfie make my nose look big? Why, yes it does, according to a new study. A full 30 percent bigger than it would look if you didn't have a phone up in your mug.
Despite how easy it is to snap those all-pervasive self portraits, the short distance from the camera combines with the wide-angle lens to puff the proboscis, explains the research, published Thursday in the journal JAMA Facial Plastic Surgery.
(Leslie Katz. Yes, selfies do make your nose look bigger. CNET. March 1, 2018.)
proboscis

Tech giant Google has been accused of fostering a “bro culture” that saw female employees suffer sexual harassment on a daily basis in a new lawsuit by a filed by a former software engineer.
Loretta Lee, who spent seven years at Google before she as [sic] fired in 2016, accused the Californian company of sexual harassment, gender discrimination, and wrongful termination in a suit earlier this month.
It comes just six months after Google’s last major sexism scandal, which was sparked by the leak of a 10-page memo spread within the company, rallying against its diversity policies.
(Damien Sharkov. ‘BRO CULTURE’: FORMER GOOGLE EMPLOYEE FIRED FOR POOR PERFORMANCE LAUNCHES SEXUAL HARASSMENT SUIT. newsweek. March 1, 2018.)
bro culture
If you’re in college there’s a high probability that you or someone you know has discussed “bro culture,” “dude bros” or “frat culture” — and more likely than not the conversation was negative.
“Bro culture” refers not just to macho behaviors in general, but also to darker things like binge drinking, sexism, rape culture and other elements associated with hyper masculinity.
(Kyler Sumter. What we mean when we say 'bro culture.’ USA Today. June 7, 2017.)
