make hay of

The Supreme Court has voted to strike down the landmark Roe v. Wade decision, according to an initial draft majority opinion written by Justice Samuel Alito circulated inside the court and obtained by POLITICO.

The draft opinion is a full-throated, unflinching repudiation of the 1973 decision which guaranteed federal constitutional protections of abortion rights and a subsequent 1992 decision — Planned Parenthood v. Casey — that largely maintained the right. “Roe was egregiously wrong from the start,” Alito writes.
(Supreme Court has voted to overturn abortion rights, draft opinion shows. Politico. May 2, 2022.)

Senate Democrats next Wednesday will [sic] for a vote on a bill to codify the abortion protections in Roe v. Wade, after a draft Supreme Court opinion leaked this week indicating the court plans to overturn the precedent.

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., announced the planned vote, which will be a procedural vote rather than final passage of the bill, in a Thursday press conference.

The vote almost certainly will fail because Republicans are expected to filibuster it. But Democrats are expected to make hay of that fact ahead of the midterm elections, seizing on an issue where they believe the public is on their side.
(Tyler Olson. Democrats to force Senate vote on abortion bill after Supreme Court leak. Fox News. May 5, 2022.)

Democrats are expected to make hay of that fact ahead of the midterm elections

ここでの、"make hay of…"

to make use of a situation or circumstance especially in order to gain an advantage
(Merriam-Webster Dictionary)

Make hay while the sun shines.

(Collins Cobuild Dictionary of Idiomsの解説による。)

A shocking photo taken moments after a family from hell exited a KFC has left people outraged.

The image shows piles of KFC containers and half-eaten meals scattered across three tables in a food court in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

The table was so filthy that the surface was hardly visible under plastic and paper containers, soft drink bottles and bits of food.
(Adrian Zorzut. Chicken dump: Family leaves entire table full of KFC trash. The Sun? May 4, 2022.)

being the worst or most dreadful of its kind
(Merriam-Webster Dictionary)

Recently I returned from a trip by CTA bus that became the trip from hell. I boarded at 2600 East on a bus headed west to Ford City. After a few blocks, the driver informed us that he was going only as far as Wentworth. We had to get off near the CTA bus barn on 79th.
(Chicago Sun-Times, 2000)

What happens when the people next door are really the neighbors from hell? They can actually bring the value of your home down by thousands.

smokescreen

A group of Apple employees is demanding more flexibility from the tech giant ahead of its planned return to office work later this month. In an open letter, the group, calling itself Apple Together, said the company's plan for many employees to be in the office three fixed days a week offers "almost no flexibility at all" and could be damaging to diversity.

"The Hybrid Working Pilot is not an increase in flexibility, it is a smokescreen and often a step back in flexibility for many of our teams," reads the letter, which was posted Friday and earlier reported by CNN. "We are not asking for everyone to be forced to work from home. We are asking to decide for ourselves, together with our teams and direct manager, what kind of arrangement works best for each one of us, be that in an office, work from home, or a hybrid approach."
(Carrie Mihalcik. Apple Employees Criticize Return-to-Work Plan, Call for More Flexibility. CNET. May 3, 2022.)

Apple Together

"The Hybrid Working Pilot is not an increase in flexibility, it is a smokescreen and often a step back in flexibility for many of our teams,"

An action or statement used to conceal actual plans or intentions
(American Heritage Dictionary)

stick with

There's finding a career and then there's finding a company you stick with for so long, it breaks a world record, as Walter Orthmann of Brazil broke the world record for longest tenure at the same company, all while turning 100-years-old.

Born in the small Brazilian town of Brusque on April 19, 1922, Orthmann wanted to get a job as a 15-year-old to help with family with financial problems, according to Guinness World Records.
(Jordan Mendoza. 100-year-old man breaks Guinness World Record for working at same company for 84 years. USA Today. May 2, 2022.)

stick with

Through his spokesperson, Kelly thanked (his fans) who stuck by him and supported him with such love... And most of all, he wants to thank God for giving him the strength to get through this.
(USA Today, 2017)

Should President Clinton stick to his goal of making sure 100% of Americans have health insurance coverage?
(New York Times, 1994)

You have to stick with the company.

ferocity

WARSAW, Poland (AP) — A top-level U.S. congressional delegation led by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi praised the “ferocity” and resolve of Ukrainians face to face with their leader in a weekend visit to Kyiv undertaken in extraordinary secrecy.
(Pelosi, in surprise Kyiv trip, vows unbending US support. Associated Press. May 1, 2022.)

“We have to make sure the Ukrainians have what they need to win,” he said. “What we have seen in the last two months is their ferocity, their intense pride, their ability to fight and their ability to win if they have the support to do so.”
(ibid.)

WARSAW, Poland -- A U.S. congressional delegation led by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi praised the courage of the Ukrainian people in remarks during a visit to Poland on Sunday, a day after a surprise trip to Kyiv to meet with President Volodymr Zelenskyy.

praised the “ferocity” and resolve of Ukrainians
