cosmonaut

Four astronauts rocketed toward the International Space Station from a SpaceX ship Wednesday, including the first Russian to launch from the U.S. in 20 years, alongside NASA and Japanese astronauts despite tensions over the war in Ukraine.

The 230-foot Falcon 9 rocket blasted off at noon, taking NASA's Josh Cassada and Nicole Mann, Japan's Koichi Wakata, and Russia's Anna Kikina to orbit in a Crew Dragon capsule. The mission known as Crew-5 is SpaceX's sixth crewed flight under contract from NASA and eighth overall when including private spaceflights.

“We’re so glad to do it together," said Kikina, Russia’s lone female cosmonaut and the fifth Russian woman to rocket off the planet, offering thanks in both English and Russian. “Spasibo!”
(Emre Kelly. 'Instantly unites us': Russian launches to space from US, 1st time in 20 years, amid tensions over Ukraine. USA Today. October 6, 2022.)

The crew members include astronauts Nicole Mann and Josh Cassada of NASA; astronaut Koichi Wakata of JAXA, or Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency; and cosmonaut Anna Kikina of Russia's Roscosmos space agency.
(Jackie Wattles. SpaceX capsule docks with space station carrying international astronauts — and 1 cosmonaut. CNN. October 6, 2022.)

carrying international astronauts — and 1 cosmonaut

dictate

We all know that eating later in the day isn't good for our waistlines, but why? A new study weighed in on that question by comparing people who ate the same foods -- but at different times in the day.

"Does the time that we eat matter when everything else is kept consistent?" said first author Nina Vujović, a researcher in the division of sleep and circadian disorders at Boston's Brigham and Women's Hospital.

The answer was yes -- eating later in the day will double your odds of being hungrier, according to the study published Tuesday in the journal Cell Metabolism.
(Sandee LaMotte. When you eat may dictate how hungry you are, study says. CNN. October 5, 2022.)

When you eat may dictate how hungry you are, study says

to require or determine necessarily

injuries dictated the choice of players
The weather will dictate how long we stay.

BはA次第

count the house

An NYU chemistry professor says he was fired after students complained his class was too hard.

“They weren’t coming to class, that’s for sure, because I can count the house,” Jones added, defending himself and saying the kids simply were not studying hard enough. “They weren’t watching the videos, and they weren’t able to answer the questions.”
(Ben Kesslen. NYU chem professor says he was fired after students complained class was too hard. New York Post. October 4, 2022.)

“They weren’t coming to class, that’s for sure, because I can count the house,”

For Esmé - With Love and Squalor"という作品がありますが、その中で以下のようなくだりがあります。

She was about thirteen, with straight ash-blond hair of ear-lobe length, an exquisite forehead, and blasé eyes that, I thought, might very possibly have counted the house.

また、その後の部分にも、"with those house-counting eyes of hers"というくだりがあります。

finna

BURNET, Texas (KXAN) — A student was arrested over the weekend after making a threat against Burnet High School, according to the Burnet Consolidated ISD.

The district was made aware on Saturday night of a photo posted to Snapchat of what appeared to be an assault rifle with the caption, “School finna be crazy Monday.”
(Abigail Jones. Burnet High School student arrested after threat made on Snapchat. KXAN Austin. October 7, 2022.)

“School finna be crazy Monday.”

(be) going to〜

(be) fixing to〜

Chiefly Southern US
To be on the verge of; to be making preparations for. Used in progressive tenses with the infinitive: We were fixing to leave without you.
(American Heritage Dictionary)

PDA

rare royal PDA

知っていたのは、携帯端末を意味するPDA(Personal Data Appliance)でしたので、戸惑ったという訳です。

A newly released royal portrait of King Charles with Camilla, the Queen Consort, alongside Prince William and Kate Middleton shows both couples engaged in subtle public displays of affection (PDA).

The photograph, taken by long-time royal photographer Chris Jackson, depicts Charles along with his eldest son and their wives, and was shared by the official royal family Instagram account on Saturday.

PDAs by royals are not officially restricted, but it is rare to see them engaging in tactile moments with significant others. Instead, most keep to an unwritten rule, preferring to maintain a healthy distance on official business.
(Maria Noyen. A new portrait of King Charles, Camilla, William, and Kate Middleton contains rare royal PDA. Insider. Oct 2, 2022.)

public displays of affection

Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip, who were married for 73 years, famously followed the no-PDA rule and were rarely ever seen holding hands.

But on closer inspection of the new portrait, there are signs that both couples are actually engaging in a PDA. Charles' right arm is looped under Camilla's left arm, and appears to be resting on her back.

Similarly, Kate's right arm seems to be gently placed behind William's back, while he clasps his hands together.
(ibid.)
