昨日の話題に引き続きですが、大統領選の行方を左右するとも言われる黒人有権者層を巡って、両陣営の攻防が注目されています。

ハリス候補はインド人と言っていたのに最近になって突然黒人だと言い出したと、その出自を疑問視するトランプ候補は、我こそ黒人にとってベストな大統領候補だと発言。

トランプ氏の一連の発言について、Hill紙のオピニオン記事は、これまでも嘘や攻撃的、侮辱的な内容に満ちており、今回の発言もそのひとつだと断じています。

そして、こうしたトランプ氏の"shock-jock politics"は時代遅れで、もはや黒人有権者層には通じないと切って捨てています。

“I think I have been the best president for the Black population since Abraham Lincoln,” former President Donald Trump boasted on Wednesday — just one of many of absurd lies and outrageous insults he delivered in a televised interview at the National Association of Black Journalists convention in Chicago. 

Trump continued his recent attacks on Vice President Kamala Harris, the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee, who will become the first woman, second Black person, and first person of Indian descent to lead our country if she is elected president. He even mispronounced “Kamala” at times as a sign of his contempt.

記事タイトルに出てくる"shock-jock politics"という表現ですが、"shock-jock"とは、

shock-radio disc-jockey

のことだそうです。American Heritage Dictionaryでは以下のように定義されています。

A host of a shock radio program.

また、Merriam-Webster Dictionaryの定義では、

a radio personality noted for provocative or inflammatory commentary

(Merriam-Webster Dictionary)

となっています。

"shock-radio (program)"というのは刺激的な言葉遣いでリスナーの感情を煽るような内容を特徴とするラジオ番組のことだそうです。

従って、"shock-jock politics"の言わんとするところも明らかですが、トランプ氏が得意とする煽動的な発言が散りばめられた言動を指しています。

昨日の"low-ball play"にも通底するところがありそうです。
