ジョンソン英首相に対する不信任投票が行われましたが、否決されました。

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson survived a no-confidence vote Monday that could have ousted him from power as discontent with his rule grows amid a fight for his political life. 

Conservative members of parliament voted 211-148 in favor of letting Johnson stay in power during a secret ballot in Westminster. 

In an interview with Sky News, Johnson called the vote a "decisive result," despite the fact that 40% of members of his own party split from him.

パンデミック下の外出制限を発動しておきながら首相官邸でパーティに興じるという不適切な行動に批判が高まっていました。そこへ最近の物価高なども相俟って、身内の保守党内からも辞任を求める声があがっていたようです。

さて、今日の1語は記事本文からではなく、写真からなのですが、ジョンソン首相辞任を求めるデモ参加者のプラカードに、

Boris. Putting the Blight into Blighty.

とあったのが目に留まった次第です。

"blight"は植物が枯れる病気のことで、荒廃、衰退という意味があります。

一方の"blighty"は韻を踏んでいるようですが、英国（イングランド）のことを意味するそうで、これは知りませんでした。

ボリス（ジョンソン氏）は英国に荒廃をもたらす元凶であるから辞めさせるべき、というところでしょうか。

"blighty"というのは、英軍人が祖国であるイギリスを愛着を込めて呼ぶ際の表現だそうで、第一次大戦の頃よく使われていたそうです。

語源はヒンディー語にあるそうで、英国のインド統治時代の名残りかと思われます。

フェースブックCOO辞任 ー leaning in

先週でしたか、フェースブック（現メタ社）COOのサンドバーグ氏が辞任すると報じられました。

企業社会で活躍する女性の象徴でもある同氏が流行らせた言葉に、

lean(ing) in

という表現があります。

Ten years ago, Sheryl Sandberg was on top of the world.

Facebook had just gone public, making Sandberg a billionaire. She had played a major role in creating that wealth.

"lean"は傾く、傾斜する、という意味の動詞ですが、2013年のサンドバーグ氏の著作で"lean in"がビジネス界の流行語となりました。

著作を読んだ訳ではありませんが、"lean(ing) in"の意味するところは、女性が社会進出する中で、存在感を出すためにより意欲的、積極的に取り組む、それこそ、会議のテーブルに身を乗り出して（leaning in）訴えるように、というようなことのようです。

引用したCNNのオピニオン記事ではサンドバーグ氏のキャリア遍歴を振り返りつつ、一世を風靡した"leaning in"を体現した同氏と、フェースブックが起こした不祥事、最終的には辞任による幕引きという凋落に触れています。

この表現のトレンドを捉えて、Merriam-Webster Dictionaryでは以下のような解説をしています。

Lean in became a business motto in 2013, taken from the title of the book Lean In: Women, Work, and the Will to Lead written by Sheryl Sandberg, the Chief Operating Officer of Facebook, and Nell Scovell, a writer and Sandberg's collaborator. Sandberg's book outlines business strategies to help women achieve success, and its title perfectly paints a picture of what Sandberg believes women need to do to move up in the business world: to press ahead, to project confidence, to "sit at the table" and physically lean in to make herself heard.

時代はオバマ大統領の政権時代、女性の社会進出が進み、また女性のキャリアと家庭生活のバランスを巡る議論が活発化し、"lean-in generation"とも呼ばれました。

恐らくは2013年頃に書かれたと思われるMerriam-Websterの解説は、"lean in"という表現について、トレンドにはなっているものの、広く使われて、意味合いとして定着するまでには至っていないとして、辞書のエントリに追加するにはもうしばらく様子を見極める必要がある、と締め括っています。

サンドバーグ氏の辞任により、辞書入りはやはり見送りでしょうか。

知らなかった"colour"の意味 ー Trooping the Colour

エリザベス女王の在位70年を祝賀する式典がバッキンガム宮殿で華やかに執り行われました。

The Queen beamed as she made an appearance on the Buckingham Palace balcony as part of the Trooping the Colour ceremony, marking the first day of her Platinum Jubilee celebrations.

御年96歳になられた女王とロイヤルファミリーの様子を伝える記事がトップで報じられています。

また、多くの記事では、

the Trooping the Colour

というセレモニーの様子を撮影した動画を見ることができます。

この"the Trooping the Colour"というセレモニーですが、日本語では、

軍旗敬礼式

（研究社英和大辞典）

などと訳されています。

軍隊、騎兵中隊を意味する"troop"ですが、動詞として、軍隊を行進させる、という意味があります。尤も、動詞として用いられるのは、"troop the colour(s)"という言い回しに限られるそうで、英国国王（女王）の誕生日の恒例行事として、軍旗を部隊の前をゆっくりと行進させることを指します。

ところで、"colour"（color）についてですが、言うまでもなく、色、カラーのことです。

ところが、"troop the colour(s)"における"colour"には、国旗、軍旗という意味があるのです。不勉強にして知りませんでした。

お手持ちの英和辞典を引いていただければ必ず載っていると思いますが、色彩や顔色といった、よく知っている意味に続いて、載っていると思います。

"color"はこれらの基本的な意味に加えて、"distinctive mark of identification"、即ち特定のグループや団体のアイデンティティーとなる色や記章、制服などを指す意味で用いられるようになり、さらに軍旗や国旗などの意味でも使われるようになったそうです。

従って、"the Queen's colour"は英国国旗を意味し、"salute the colors"とは国旗に敬礼する、という意味になります。

draw back the curtain

米俳優のジョニー・デップさんと、元妻であるハードさんの法廷闘争が漸く終結したようです。

といっても、小生はデップさんのファンという訳でもなく、セレブのスキャンダルにも興味はありませんので、詳細は知りません。

この1〜2か月くらい、グーグルニュースやツイッターを見ていると、両者の言い分を報じるヘッドラインとリードが毎日のように目に付いてはいたのですが、読みたいとも思わずスルーしていました。

今日のトップニュースでは、判決が下され、デップさんが勝訴したということです。

The jury believed Johnny Depp. After a six-week defamation trial that pitted Depp against his ex-wife, actress Amber Heard, a Virginia jury delivered a rare verdict: They awarded Depp $15 million in damages. The jury also said Depp's lawyer defamed Heard.

As the closing credits rolled on the courtroom lovers spat, a few things about this small screen drama are now clear. First, the vicious vitriol spewed between divorced spouses is wince-worthy enough when observed on a small scale, but it becomes downright detestable when played out on a world stage. 夫婦喧嘩は犬も食わない、と言いますが、ここのところ頻繁に目に付く記事は、ヘッドラインを読むだけでも、不快を催すようなものだったように思います。

引用したオピニオン記事では、今回の裁判沙汰について、

the trial drew back the curtain on the insecurities, vacuousness, and even nihilism that co-stars with many red-carpet celebrities

と評していますが、詳細はともかくとして、同感です。

"draw back the curtain"は、カーテンを開け放して、隠れていたものを露わにする、という意味です。

辞書では、"draw the curtain (on or over)"が載っていると思います。こちらは、カーテンを引いて隠す、という意味です。

引いていたカーテンを開けるのが"draw back"という訳です。

デップさんやハードさんのファンはこんな醜い争いを見たくはなかったでしょう。

fexting

ファーストレディ、すなわちバイデン大統領夫人である、ジル・バイデンさんが雑誌のインタビューで使った、"fexting"という単語が取り沙汰されています。

話はバイデン氏が副大統領であった時に遡るようなのですが、夫妻は意見の対立があった時も表向きには口論する姿を見せずに、"fexting"によりしのいでいた、ということなのですが、この"fexting"とは一体何なのでしょう？

WASHINGTON (AP) — When President Joe Biden and first lady Jill Biden disagree, they don’t hash it out in front of other people. Instead, she says, they argue by text — “fexting” as they call it.

Jill Biden also told Harper’s Bazaar magazine in an interview that her divorce from her first husband taught her to be independent and that she has drilled that lesson into her daughter and granddaughters.

上記に引用したAPの記事には詳しい説明が無いのですが、ジル夫人が意図した"fexting"の意味というのは、

fighting and texting

のことだそうで、text(ing)（メールやSNSのメッセージ上）で口論する（fight）ことを指すようです。

ところが、タブロイド紙のニューヨークポスト紙によれば、"fexting"には別の意味で使われることもあり、それが如何わしい意味合いだと言うのです。

But while the Bidens might think the slang term is a cute amalgamation of the words “fighting” and “texting,” Urban Dictionary defines the word as a crude colloquialism that actually means “f–king while texting.”

以前取り上げた、"sexting"とほぼ同義の意味合いで用いられるようです。

"fexting"というのはネット世代の若者の造語だろうと思います。ファーストレディの発言があげつらわれてしまったのは、大人が若者言葉をよく知らずに使うと思わぬ失態になりかねないという一例かも知れません。

"fexting"をネット検索すると、如何わしい意味の他にも、"fake"と"texting"を併せた単語という解釈で、スマホでメッセージを打っているようなふりをする、という意味でも使われるそうです。
