米民主党の下院議員、アレクサンドリア・オカシオ・コルテス氏はニュース記事タイトルではAOCと略されて何かと話題になる女性議員ですが、ワシントンD.C.にある議事堂の外で写真撮影をしていたところ、見ず知らずの男性に卑猥な言葉を掛けられて立腹しました。

当然ながら、相手へ抗議するというのは想像がつくところですが、

“to deck”

という表現が使われており、引用符付きであることから特別な意味がありそうです。

手元の英和辞書を引いてみたところ、アメリカ英語の俗語表現で、

打ち倒す

という意味だそうです。

「デッキ」（“deck”）というのはご存知のように船の甲板のことです。相手を殴って甲板の上に倒す、というイメージから来ています。

これは、動詞の“floor”が相手を地面に這わせる、すなわち負かすという意味や、モノを床に押し付ける、という意味を持つのと同じです。

オカシオ・コルテス議員の腕力のほどは知りませんが、SPに留められてその場は収まったそうです。

CNN Businessによると、通貨ユーロの価格が下落し、1ユーロがほぼ1ドルというレートになったということです。

For the first time in 20 years, the exchange rate between the euro (EUU) and the US dollar has reached parity -- meaning the two currencies are worth the same.

The euro hit $1 on Tuesday, down about 12% since the start of the year. Fears of recession on the continent abound, stoked by high inflation and energy supply uncertainty caused by Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

このニュースについては国内でもユーロが対ドルで「パリティ」となった、「パリティ割れ」などと報じられています。実はこの「パリティ」（parity）を今日の1語にしようと思ったのですが、以前に取り上げていました。

為替レートというものは異なる通貨の交換レートを定めるものだと理解していましたので、等価と言われてもいまいちピンと来なかったのですが、考えてみれば1ユーロが1ドルということになれば、ユーロとドルという2つの通貨の価値が全く同じということで、2つが存在する意味合いが無いとも言えるとなると、ある意味では珍事と言えます。この20年で初めてのことだそうです。

世界経済はウクライナへのロシア侵攻、NATO諸国とロシアとの対立、それに伴う原油価格の高騰、さらにインフレ、と景気減退のフェーズに入っていると言われます。

先進国ではインフレにどのように対処するのかが喫緊の課題となっており、ユーロ圏においても例外ではありません。

ヨーロッパ中央銀行（ECB）は利上げに踏み切ると見られていますが、"hard landing"はもはや不可避とも見られているようです。

この"hard landing"という用語ですが、経済の用語で、景気良好の状態が続いた後に経済が停滞、景気悪化へと至ることを指すそうです。

A hard landing refers to a marked economic slowdown or downturn following a period of rapid growth. The term "hard landing" comes from aviation, where it refers to the kind of high-speed landing that—while not an actual crash—is a source of stress as well as potential damage and injury. The metaphor is used for high-flying economies that run into a sudden, sharp check on their growth, such as a monetary policy intervention meant to curb inflation. Economies that experience a hard landing often slip into a stagnant period or even recession.

日本語では字句通りの訳で「硬着陸」というそうですが、飛行機がトラブルにより、墜落とまでは行かなくとも、地面に激突するような形で着陸することを指します。

つまり、痛み（損害）は避けられないということで、インフレが続くと日本経済もこの先どうなってしまうのやら・・・。

firehose

ツイッター社の買収提案をしていたテスラCEOのイーロン・マスク氏ですが、先日、買収を取り止めると発表してニュースになっています。

買収の契約を破棄する形となり、ツイッター社は契約義務違反であると非難しています。一方のマスク氏は、契約にあったスパムアカウント等の数に関する情報提供が履行されていないということを買収からの撤退の理由にしているそうです。

Elon Musk wants to cancel his deal to buy Twitter, but the social media company is having none of it.

On Friday, Musk moved to terminate the $44-billion acquisition agreement, alleging that Twitter breached the deal by failing to hand over data he says he needs to evaluate the number of bots and spam accounts on the platform.

ここでは、"firehose of data"、また"Twitter firehose"とありますが、記事の説明によれば、ツイッターというサービスのプラットフォームを流れる全てのツイートに関するデータ、のことを指すようです。

このような"firehose"の意味合いはコンピュータサイエンスの用語としては定着しつつあるらしく、ネット上の辞書サイトでは一部ですが、この意味合いを掲載しているものがあります。

なるほど、これは消火ホースが一度に大量の水を放出するのに似て、ネット空間を流れる大量のデータを指すもののようです。

assassin

安倍元首相が参院選の応援演説中に狙撃され死亡した事件は日本国内のみならず、海外においてもトップニュースで報じられました。

死去を受けて2日後の選挙投開票の結果は、与党自民党の圧勝となりました。

安倍元首相が殺害された事件について、国内メディアでは、「撃たれ死亡」、「死亡（演説中銃撃）」、などという見出しがほとんどですが、海外では「暗殺」（assassination）という言葉が見られます。"assassination"は日本語で「暗殺」ですが、国内メディアでは海外報道でのこの単語を意識してか、括弧書きで用いています。（産経新聞7月9日朝刊）

"assassin"という単語について改めて見てみましょう。

フランス語から借用されたこの単語はアラビア語起源で、語源はhashishというインド大麻を指す単語だということです。

12〜13世紀頃、敵対する相手のリーダーなどを殺害した狂信的なイスラム教徒らは「アサシン派」と呼ばれ、暗殺実行前にはhashishを服用していると言われていたそうです。そこから、hashishの常用者という意味のアラビア語hashshashinが暗殺を意味する"assassin"になった、と言われ、

a person who commits murder, and especially one who murders a politically important person for money or ideology

(Merriam-Webster Dictionary)

という意味が定着しました。

英ジョンソン首相が辞任表明 ー yesterday’s news

イギリスのジョンソン首相が遂に辞任を表明しました。

The U.K.'s next prime minister is likely polishing their campaign pitch after Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced — belatedly, when all other options had evaporated — that he would be stepping down.

Driving the news: Two candidates to replace Johnson as Conservative Party leader and thus prime minister have already thrown their hats into the ring, with many more expected to follow. The man who led the campaign to take Britain out of the EU and appeared electorally untouchable after a landslide victory in 2019 will soon be yesterday's news.

変人と言われながらも2019年の選挙で圧倒的な勝利を収めて首相に就任したジョンソン氏ですが、そのジョンソン氏が、

とはどういう意味でしょうか。

"yesterday’s news"をそのまま訳すと、昨日のニュース、ということになりますが、このフレーズの意味するところは、

something or someone that was popular once, but is not popular now

(Merriam-Webster Dictionary)

というもので、かつてはもてはやされたけれども、もはやその人気を失ってしまった人、ということです。

つまり、人気が凋落して今や「過去の人」、というような意味ですね。

なお、類似の表現に"yesterday’s man"というものがあります。
